Shadow of the Orient is one that I would have happily paid for back in the day and would urge retro enthusiasts to pick up.

Shadow of the Orient is a 2D action-platformer with tight gameplay, stunning visuals, and brutal yet rewarding combat. A solid adventure spread across 3 acts with plenty of secrets to find, gear to unlock, and abilities to use, makes Shadow of the Orient both a great quick "pick up and play" type of game as well as a game that's fun to master.

Shadow of the Orient is inoffensive and delivers exactly what it promises, which is, admittedly, not a lot. The gameplay is as classic as it gets and is priced appropriately for its content. It's a solid effort that doesn't do anything wrong apart from some dirty level design and leans on being a bit forgettable.

While I honestly enjoyed some of my time Shadow of the Orient, I feel like it was the wrong genre. There’s so much effort put into making expansive levels that I feel this would have worked better as a small Metroidvania than a lackluster platformer. It’s clear Spacelab Games put a lot of time into the experience, and I strongly suspect they might have some future great game in them. As for this one, fans of retro might enjoy it, but probably not many others.

The indie Shadow of the Oriented does not propose to do a whole lot for the platforming genre, but the Switch version goes above and beyond (in the bad sense), and gets delivered with critical technical issues.
