A music game like no other, Rytmos orchestrates a distinct blend of music-themed puzzles to solve alongside the opportunity for players to create their own melodies utilising a catalogue of unlockable instruments and modifiers.

Set in space, every planet players travel to presents a set of six line puzzles to solve. Each of these puzzles requires players to pass through sound emitters before then returning to the start point in order to form a musical loop. As each loop is made, more layers are added to the game’s evolving soundscape, forming musical compositions in real-time that are based on the player’s actions. Progress through each cubic cosmos rewards players with the chance to become musicians themselves. Instruments such as the Kalimba, Vibraphone and even classic 1980s synthesisers can be used to not only jam along with the in-game soundtracks but also make brand new melodies. By completion, Rytmos evolves into not just a simple puzzle game but a fully functional music maker with the capability to make complex musical tracks.

Rytmos is a fun puzzle game. Regenerating the different planets, and making songs give the player a satisfying feeling. A little more of a challenge or maybe some different modes would have been great. But overall Rytmos is a great addition to any puzzle fans library.

Overall, I had a great time with Rytmos. Its puzzle gameplay is perfect for pick up and play sessions in between larger games. The puzzles made me feel smart and changed up the gameplay frequently enough to not get stale. However, what made this game truly a standout was that it not just used music as a way to enhance gameplay, but to actually teach me more about the music used. It felt as if the developers really wanted to share their love of music from all over the world with me. I could’ve never told you how African jazz sounded before playing this game, and I am really glad I discovered a genre like this thanks to Rytmos. The Switch version stutters occasionally and isn’t a perfect port, but if you’re looking for an easy to understand puzzle game that will get you through a few hours, this is absolutely one you should turn up the volume for.

Part chic toy, part interactive museum exhibit, part broadsheet mind-teaser, Rytmos is a sophisticated proposition (the puzzles soon scale in complexity, sometimes lacing around more than one side of the cube at a time), at once tactile and mystical.

Rytmos is a meditative music-making experience with a specific goal in mind – sharing the music of the world, with the world. With well-designed puzzles and diverse influences, it’s worth the play if you’re keen on a relaxing, musical experience.
