It's not often that you find a Metroidvania that actually measures up to its models, while still managing to put its own attractive spin on the old formula. Record of Lodoss War -Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- absolutely delivers and manages to capture the Symphony of the Night look and feel brilliantly, while still being its own title. There are only two real drawbacks that keep the experience from being perfect: performance can have dips, manifested with slowdown rather than dropped frames, but only in circumstances where it doesn't affect gameplay at all. Then, newcomers to the Record of Lodoss War universe will be left completely lost as to who the characters are, and how they relate to one another, making the story tough to care for. Everything else however feels perfect and proved memorable in a way that Konami's eponymous franchise always managed to deliver with its 2D incarnations.

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is an excellent and short metroidvania that is a joy to play on Switch. The initial release in December had major technical issues, but the newest patch has made it an easy recommendation for anyone looking to play a quality metroidvania on Switch.

If you’ve been hoping for a little more combat and a little less walking back and forth between points on a map, Wonder Labyrinth would make a wonder-full way to spend five or six hours.

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth doesn’t take too long to beat — even the most curious/thorough/careful player is unlikely to go over the 10-hour mark — but when the adventure’s this much fun and as densely packed with creativity, does it matter? At the end of it all you’re far more likely to feel satisfied than short-changed, and Deedlit’s tale is a surprisingly touching one regardless of how much or little you already know about Lodoss. If you're after something with the flavour of Symphony of the Night that doesn't feel like a shallow knock-off, this is a fine alternative.

While the game doesn’t do a whole lot to shake up the formula and its story is going to be largely nonsensical to those unfamiliar with the somewhat vintage Record of Lodoss War property, the controls are tight, the pacing is brisk, and the map designs are strong. It’s a very pleasant Metroidvania experience, and the six or so hours it takes to finish go by in a flash. Those who love Symphony of the Night in particular will find this game wonderfully familiar in all the best ways. I doubt it will inspire many imitators of its own, but it’s very well-done.

If it had been released closer to the franchise's heyday, Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth could have been seen as one of the all-time greats. As it stands, it's a fun stew of mixed influences that often does things by the numbers, but goes harder with its art than it has to. [Issue #60 – July/August 2022, p. 75]

It has its share of new ideas, but for the most part, Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a classic metroidvania, and it wears that heritage proudly. The inspiration from games like Symphony of the Night is abundant, right down to a little homage to Alucard in the way Deedlit’s cape animates when she runs. “Indie retro-inspired metroidvania” isn’t exactly a rarity these days, but Wonder Labyrinth has the goods, with the intricate level design, fluid movement, and steady stream of worthwhile upgrades that sit at the genre’s heart. It’s probably not going to make a metroidvania fan out of someone who isn’t one already, but as a throwback to Castlevania’s heyday in particular, it’s an impressive effort.

Expand

It delivers for those looking for a fun rpg fraught with powerups, skillups, some weapon and bow variety, as well as a fair number of special attacks that can be collected. The gameplay style is most similar to Castlevania and similar to, but not quite as polished as, Bloodstained. The graphics style is a good throwback to classic games. The hitboxes are satisfying. The enemy variety is solid.

The biggest downside that prevented this game from a higher score was the difficulty spike in the final level. You encounter a forced boss rush, which not only will deplete resources, but since you don’t know how many stages it will go, it makes resource use trial and error. It can result in 5-10 minutes or more of plowing through boss after boss, only to be killed because of lack of resources (or stunlocked by at least one boss). That’s a recipe for aggravation, not fun. The same goes for at least one other fight with multiple phases *that also have* multiple HP bars, which are impossible to anticipate. So not only do late bosses devolve into long pattern/attack lessons but at least initially, guessing games for how to use resources.

I wanted to like this game a lot more than I did. It had everything going for it. A Metroidvania style game with gorgeous art, beautiful musicI wanted to like this game a lot more than I did. It had everything going for it. A Metroidvania style game with gorgeous art, beautiful music and some mustery, that's a win in my books. However, for as much as this game tries to be another Castlevania SOTN, it fails in almost ever single way. This is a one-sided, one level of depth feeling game, and it is incredibly short. There is no crafting, nothing exciting about the powers you acquire or the weapons that you find, and forget about armor, there is nothing more than what you start with in this game. I literally spammed the same ability the entire game to beat it in one sit down.
On a note about the enemies. They were beautifully done for the most part but absolutely awkwardly placed in the tiny corridors that make up this game. The enemy size ratio to room was not well thought out at all, it was as if the art directors only desire was to fill up as much of the screen as possible in every case. Recycling boss battles. This is an unforgivable gaming sin. I beat a boss and you think it’s fun to have to beat that boss again? Seriously, that’s a lazy way to extend your games already pathetically short run time. Finally, this game had so much lag and screen stuttering that half the boss battles felt caught in a stun lock of sorts. Ori can run flawlessly but this game can’t? Final thoughts. Buy this game if it goes on for 80% off. It’s worth $10 for sure. But the full price, nah, that’s a ripoff.
