"Pokkén Tournament" was another game I enjoyed on the Wii U, but unlike "Mario Kart 8," this was a game I didn't really put that much time into during its initial release. I'm not sure what it was, maybe it was that I was playing so many other games that I forgot about it? I'm not sure, but the point is, when I heard it was re-releasing for the Switch, I wanted to give it a shot, seeing as"Pokkén Tournament" was another game I enjoyed on the Wii U, but unlike "Mario Kart 8," this was a game I didn't really put that much time into during its initial release. I'm not sure what it was, maybe it was that I was playing so many other games that I forgot about it? I'm not sure, but the point is, when I heard it was re-releasing for the Switch, I wanted to give it a shot, seeing as how the portability and on-the-go factor would allow me to play it a bit more. And I can say for sure, I'm glad I got the game again, because it's great!
"Pokkén Tournament DX" is a fun and exciting fighter all-around. It controls extremely well, the story is actually decently interesting, the visuals are absolutely gorgeous, even in handheld mode, and with the ability to level up the playable Pokémon, along with their different styles of play, there's a lot of replay value on this one! On top of that, while it's not a "deep and technical fighter" per se, there's definitely a solid learning curve to this game that makes you want to keep playing and get better!
I do have a couple problems with the game though. For starters, the limited roster of Pokémon is still a problem on the Switch version, and it's disappointing that there's only 21 playable Pokémon out of 800+ in the series. There are also some minor issues that kind of add up throughout the game: the campaign as a whole is really easy, even with the Shadow Mewtwo fights, and the "ranking" system after battles is really confusing (I could get two perfects on someone and get 3 stars, then get taken to my last hit but still get 5 stars? Huh?). I also personally find Duel Phase to be more fun than Field Phase, and there were times where I felt like Field Phase was kind of unnecessary. That might just be me, though.
Either way, for all the little nitpicks and issues it might have, "Pokkén Tournament DX" is an extremely fun fighting game that's absolutely worth playing. In regards to this new version, I would recommend that if you already own the Wii U version and don't care for the few new characters that were added in, stick with that one. Otherwise, if you haven't gotten either version, do yourself a favor and grab this new release, because it's worth it!

It's a good port from the Wii U, with more characters and also including the portability, maybe Nintendo should put more Pokemon's in this game with future updates.

My son really enjoys mewtwo in this game, im really glad they made a character that requires little effort because now my son can play a video game for once in his life. Sometimes he goes online and loses to really good players, so he throws a temper tantrum and tosses the joycons out of anger. I tell him "you can block these people if you need to, sweety" and kissed him on the forehead. He then went to offline cpu matches and started feeling giddy again playing mewtwo! Mewtwo is pretty easy and takes no skill, if you have a crippled son who likes video games then pick up Pokken DX and play Mewtwo. Your child will have a blast! I give this amazon product review a 5/5 star rating, thanks Nintendo for making a skilless character so that my retarded son can have access to playing video games!

An absolutely solid and fun game. It has everything about the first game I liked and made it all better. The gameplay is so fun and really interesting to learn and get better. The soundtrack is amazing of course. And the graphics are beautiful even rivaling botw graphics. I love the new Pokemon and modes they added, its just such a good game.

Those people will do quite well. I on the other hand suck at all of those and I do decent at Pokken Tournament DX. The major problem with the game is how unbalanced it is. I find that 5 Pokemon - Decidueye, Mewtwo, and Gengar mainly are on the Broken side of that scale. Decidueye can use one combo to get you down to less than 1/4th of your health and then he can chain grab you at the end of said combo to put you down at about 10% of your total health for 1 combo in total. Mewtwo can just spam his midair counter attack and become the god he actually is then when he goes into synergy burst he has no cooldown on his cross map beam of death that will heavily damage you even if you have your block up. Gengar can just keep spamming the shadow ball and Ghost fists ( I don't know what attack it is supposed to be but he summons portals where you currently are and giant ghost fists punch you) moves and keep you away. Then you get mega Gengar which lasts for quite a while and he can just teleport and spam a lazer that crosses the entire arena everytime he fires it, which is about every 0.75 seconds meaning you can't put block down for a single minute moment or you get 1/5th of your health shaved off every time you are hit by it. There are several other unbalanced characters, and they just added Blastoise and Aegislash. Aegislash is beatable but you need to know exactly when to hit because of his damned sheild form. Blastiose has now the highest base attack and highest base defense in the game and is basically unkillable. Most of his normal attacks come out in 3s and will mow down your health but leave him wide open thankfully. But then you perform your strongest moves on him and they do about half to 1/4th of the damage they would do to every other character in the game. Still neither Aegislash nor Blastoise is as broken as the 3 above. Other than these 5 characters the rest of the game is pretty well balanced and quite fun. I still have a ton of fun playing in general. I have beaten all of the Broken Pokemon before but that was only because they were wielded by new players and I still had a hard time. I do believe that they need to go back in and balance all of the characters more fairly instead of most of the online player base using these 5 mainly. Decidueye has died down though so you won't run into those as much now. Expand

I cannot believe how many people like this game.

    1. Switch itself to me is a regrettable purchase, I simply CANNOT speak to people I make friends with in games. Switch OS refuses to allow us to make friends and message one another. That I wish qualified me for a refund of the entire console. What a joke. 2. I spent 60USD on the Eshop, quite enjoyed the tournaments and CPU fights.

I then got ranked with someone who had 5000 wins, and they ended up adding me I assume to give me hints and maybe help me. (but I cant TALK to that person because Nintendo is a joke.)

    Combat:
Pokken DX is an odd mix of simple and complex. You have 2 traditional game modes, 2-D figher and 3-D area, that you will need to learn intimately for each character as you will be switching modes multiple times each battle. While each move is performed with a simple input of direction+button complex combos are created as the character doesn't always move in the direction you input. That said once you adjust you'll find a rosters of character who each have their own unique tools. The learning curve is steep but it is truly rewarding to learn a character and see what you can do.

    Sound:
The crisp audio helps to convey the action on screen but I remember only a handful of themes as most are unremarkable.

    Visual:
Each character has fluid animation which helps to convey the action on screen. The particles do help in informing the player as to how they won/lost each trade but the number of bright particles can be distracting.

    Online:
The netcode is serviceable so long as you have a decent connection but you will be booted repeatedly if your connection begins to struggle.

    Continued support:
Recent Updates have provided players with the ability to do online 3v3 matches in ranked play. While the added game modes are deeply appreciated the game still needs continuing support to keep the online community alive.

Great game. I don't know if this version is easier than the Wii U version or if Blastoise is over powered. I'm in A ranking part in the Campaign. The game play is fun and explosive. The graphics are great. I wish Nintendo would lower the price.

One of the best fighting game I have ever played. Its a game where I say this is freaking Sick!
The gameplay is just through the roof. Smashing AI with Machamp and then switching your style to Darkrai are more technical style fighter. This game has incredible ideas flowing through. I am not a big Fighter type gamer but when playing this game its feels absolutely creative.

Plenty of really good pokemon characters to chose from. For instance you have a bash 'em up fighter like Machamp to a more zoning character or a more fast hack and slash, like Weavile. You can Chose. Blastoise is more a Defensive counter and range character. So many play styles in this game makes me want to play them all and get good at them. This game is actually hard too, I play Hard mode or Very Hard mode and I can get absolutely smash by AI. Great Online battles, its very hard.

Lack of story line and lack of modes. 2 v 2 street fighter switch out would have been nice.

I love the Field phase and Duel phase shift change in this game is freaking amazing. The support pokemons also makes it more strategic. I love it. Also the Graphics and some of the textures of the pokemons look freaking badass. I mean the textures are pretty basic design but for a pokemon game its better than original JRPG graphics. Lucario has nice fur texture. I like it a lot.

    8/10 Graphics
    8.5/10 Gameplay
    5/10 story
    8/10 for sound effects

    Must play!

Extra Notes: It's pretty good. It was fun to play with friends and single player/story wasn't bad and sometimes fun.

Now THIS is awesome! Controls were nice, gameplay was simple. Gengar solos too.

The game have unique interesting mechanics, interesting gameplay, also have challenge, the graphics looks very cool, there's so much potential to bring in a competitive brief, the only thing that bother me is the lack of characters in the roster.

this game is another lacking Pokemon game the controls are gimmicky and I can expect that people think this game is good.

the only reason I gave it a 3 is that it is fun with friends.
but when you are alone it is very boring.

A good fighting game with solid, original mechanics and impressive visuals. When I tried to come up with some similar titles, I thought of Psychic Force or Senko No Ronde rather than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. In other words, it’s a rather niche game that would probably go unnoticed without the Pokémon license. [13/2017, p.58]

If you absolutely loved the original and are hungry for more, Pokkén DX won't disappoint. [Issue #30 – November/December 2017, p. 68]

Yes, Pokkén Tournament DX is essentially exactly the same game as the one on the Wii U that came out one and a half years ago. But the five new characters, the new modes and the mobility of the Switch make this a worthy port, not in the least because the fighting system is simply very cool.
