People saying it is "pay to win" either haven't actually played the game, are very bad at it, or don't know what words mean. Literally anything you can get with purchase currency can be gotten by playing the game. I won my first 4games off the bat with no held or earned items and got MVP as a beand new player, then used my earned currency to buy a new held item.

The game is so fun and refreshing and if you see the words "pay2win" in a review just laugh at the reviewer, because it very literally is not. complaining about a free game they never actually really played. It is fun, easy to get in to and not at all bogged down or meta obsessed like some MOBAs

Would be fun but you have people that sit in the spawn for 7 minutes with no way to kick them. Would be fun except you play against people who sink tons of dollars into upgrades. Or it would be fun, it’s just that Zeraora is stupidly overpowered. And then you just can’t up your rank past a certain point because of all these facts. I’m done until the game gets fixed.

While the game has good gameplay and can be fun, The reason it's not good overall is the fact that it has too many mircotransations. Something I don't like. It's not worth recommending this game because of this.

Complete garbage I have played the last 25 games at great tier and have won 1 of them despite getting MVP every match but two but the game doesn't even punish those who leave mid match or reward the mvp for carrying even tho its not their fault the rest of the team is trash

Still better than playing League of Legends

Game is fun to an extend but in general it's a Pay-to-Win disguised as a Play-To-Fast, Tencent really sucked out all the potential the game had to begin with the Microtransactions and Upgradable Gear.

I don't think I've ever seen a team win Zapdos and lose yet, they'd literally have to go afk.
The Pokemon to choose from are kind of limited and some are 1000% better than others, like Snorlax. When it's a new game and it's free there's some things you can excuse as they work on it and patch it, but really? Nobody who play tested the game saw the Zapdos problem? You could literally afk the first 8 minutes of the game, come back and steal Zapdos and then xd you win. It's ridiculous.

I have not spent a single cent on micro transactions and in two weeks time I have multiple Pokemon I can play with upgraded items. Are they completely maxed out? No, two are 20 and one is 15. I can tell you though that my ranked match losses have very little to do with the level of my items and much more to do with team play and each individual understanding what to do in order to achieve victory through out the match.

All this was accomplished by utilizing the free tickets to boost my coins/battle points earned and upgrade items. I have a total of 101 matches so its not like I did nothing but play Unite for two weeks. Quit review bombing because you see micro transactions and learn how to get good without them. This is an excellent game and it deserves better than to be bombed for offering players a choice.

The map is imbalanced. Drednaw is way more impactful than Rotom. Making bottom more important than top. Zapdos straight up wins the match if you get it, making the 8 minutes before Zapdos irrelevant.
AND the pokemon themselves are imbalanced, some pokemon suck some are OP which is typical, but for christ sake I don't expect the game to be balanced but pick your poison not all of em.

    Rampant AFKers and leavers
Horrible monetization, weekly cap on how much in-game currency can be earned to basically force players to by the Pokemon that they want to play.

I do want to like the game, I'm an avid pokemon fan, I play a lot of competitive VGC and love the games even some of the worse ones, I also played league of legends for over a decade. So, I thought I would love this game but its obvious Tencent is just looking for some more pennies for their pockets, and don't have their heart in this at all.

    4. This game is pretty fun to play(imho).

    Negatives:
    1. Weekly limit of 2400 coins is garbage. To buy all the pokemons you need to play this game for months or donate. I don't like it.
    2. Currently, Zapdos is way too powerful, it needs to be nerfed.
    3. This game don't have good way to talk with your teammates, this is pretty garbage (you can't even write message before game start to simply ask your teammates to let you get fast lvl 5 in jungle).
    4. It is possible to play with newbies even in decent rank.

If tencent will remove weekly coins limit, make some balance changes, add more pokemons and make money on skins - this game'll be awesome, but in current state it is only 4/10. (in my opinion)

On the other, it forgoes its generosity by hosting pay-to-win elements, an unbalanced initial roster and poor performance both in connectivity and rendering for its intended console, The Nintendo Switch.

It's a refreshing take on the MOBA genre which allows long-time Pokémon fans to see some of their favorite Pokémon in a new, fun-to-bask-in light. In its pursuit of simplicity (probably intended for a younger audience) shorter play sessions and less decision-making lend it a more relaxing feeling.

Consequentially, it grows repetitive at a much faster pace than other titles in the genre. It's still in its infancy. As is, it offers a beautifully coated alternative for fans of the franchise. For anyone else, it showcases a barebones product with a lot of hindered potential.

    Pros:

    - A robust initial roster with varied gameplay for Pokémon fans that is sure to grow with time.
    - An elegant item and 'battle item' system that marries flavor and function nicely.
    - A more relaxing kind of MOBA you can "play on the go".

    Cons:

    - Simplistic systems grow tiring really quick.
    - Poor performance and connectivity taint an otherwise entertaining experience.
    - Its current pay-to-win systems are detrimental for anyone looking to immerse themselves in a more competitive way.

P.S. Zeraoras have a tendency to perform infinitely better on opposing teams.

Like, I know it's just a game, but the series has meant a lot to me over the years and carries a pretty heavy nostalgia. But this? This is a new low. For starters, the idea of 'premium currency' is a trick to begin with. Why not just say in the shop that a given skin is, say, "$7.99"? Instead, they create an illusion that de-values money, into shiny little "gems" or whatever a given game might call it. THEN, back when this idea was new it was an easy conversion, like $10 for 1000 gems, but over time it's shifted, just a bit, such as $12 for 1000 gems, so that when you see something like 800 gems in-game FEELS about $8, but it actually cost you around $10. THEN, interweave it with a bunch of other in-game currencies, which further dis-associates your real money, with in-game mechanics. THEN, some items are labeled as "coins/gems" and others as just "tickets", but when you try to buy a ticket item without enough tickets, it prompts you to use gems, hiding that possibility of real money. Oh, and these items are used to increase your stats, giving you an edge over those who do not pay, praying on human susceptibility the way a casino does. THEN, all this happens in a game series typically targeted to our CHILDREN. All this seriously upsets me. The next time the pokemon company president, sitting at his desk with pokemon plushies all around, tries to tell me about the next new pokemon game, I don't know if I'll be able to look at him in the face. The community already established is kinda gross, you have the MOBA fan and the pokemon fans, which are two very toxic communities. The game gives you a lot of free stuff, which in fact you can buy things, but it is not, I do mean it's not P2W. There's no game breaking characters nor holdable items, or even clothes that boost your performance in anyway if you pay to win. Honestly if you are dedicated to the game, and have a group and are yourself good, then you'll have a good time. Literally I see a few players complain that some characters are better, which is true, but for a game like this, you're only as good as the characters. Not gonna lie Pikachu is abusive, but mostly things are ok with the other mons. Balancing does need to scaled, example: play styles, rank, streaks, etc. This can easily be a MOBA players go to if you like league of legends, and grew up with pokemon as myself, and honestly I like the game and played maybe 70 ranked matches right now and honestly I know I'll sink in more time, because I am enjoying it and the grind is real, but the satisfaction of getting stuff without actually putting money into it is nice. The only things that arent free are certain characters, clothes, items, and altered skins. If a skin boosts stats, or clothes please show me proof I haven't seen it. Also like I said, if you're truly good then it shouldn't matter if you have it all or not, because you don't get much back from having everything, just upgraded items (which can be grinded towards) and pokemon(which can also be grinded towards, but takes a while. The biggest issue I see is just pokemon selection, and quote on quote builds, I've never heard such nonsense. Look, if a items fit the characteristics of the role you play then equip them, like don't listen to builds or others, it's other people who are truly ruining the fun, with what they say, and honestly it's those people who have probably put in $100+ in the game and can't justify it, I know I couldn't.

In teamfights it follows the cowboy standoff principle. Shoot first = win. That is if you didnt lose till then.
Would be a kind of okay game that needs balancing so far right? yeah BUT
It's pay2Win. You can equip held items for your Mons which you can upgrade. For money or by playing the game for something around 500+ days. Since it's competitive you either cash in hard or you sit in low rankings no matter your actual skill.

My most significant complaint, however, is that the game is a blatant cash-grab by developers. This is not a pokemon game, just a desperate pay-to-win ploy. You could skin the characters with anything: digimon, skylanders, freaking transformer robots, and it would be the exact same game. The fact they used the pokemon label and imagery with NONE of the content or mechanics from the games just makes it painfully obvious how little they care for the Pokemon name, or for the fans of the franchise. The only motive here is money.

    Do better.

This is a decent MOBA, but there's a lot of room for improvement. It gets pretty repetitive pretty fast since all the arenas either look the same or they are the same, it's hard to tell. There's not a lot of depth in the Pokemon you play as, and the COM controlled Pokemon you beat to get points to score with is pretty lacking in depth as well.

It feels like there's not much to this.

It feels like there's not much to this. It's good for killing 10 minutes or so, but even for a free to play game it's lacking. It needs more, and it could really do more is the sad part. There's hundreds of Pokemon, but only a couple dozen to pick from. Of course you do have to unlock most of them, so you feel even more limited in choice early on.

The controls are fine enough. The gameplay isn't too terrible, but nothing remarkable either. It's like the developers were shooting for the moon but landed in Key West, Florida. There's a lot more to this franchise in terms of Pokemon and terrain to do battle on. Tencent and Pokemon could do way better here.

This yields a stat increase from just +1 Attack to +15 (with an extra 7.5% attack speed and some damage based on missing HP% on top) for just one item. I think mid-term using just the in-game rewards it's possible to reach level 20 on your main items, but level 30 is outright impossible without the use of a credit card.

If you want to find out more about why it's pay 2 win and why everyone who claims otherwise hasn't done proper research, check out this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/oqal4o/pokemon_unite_how_pay2win_is_pokemon_unite_i_did/

Either way, really like the game in itself, but a MOBA that outright sells you an insane stat boost for your in-game characters is absolutely not worth playing long-term. Coming from someone who spent years playing LoL and Dota.

Oh, and the UI feels really unresponsive for some reason (double presses to move the cursor multiple times just don't work most of the time, as if the menus are running at 10FPS or so). Although that doesn't affect normal gameplay, obviously... unless you need to change some of your Items last minute and it just doesn't work because everything is so damn slow! :'D

I have played moba games for over a decade and I have played pokemon games for longer, but, you don’t need to be a pokemon fan to like pokemon unite, as it is primarily a moba game with a pokemon skin slapped over it. So the question is, will moba fans like pokemon unite?

The short answer is, hell no.

Pokemon Unite does not follow the traditional rules of a moba, now this is fine, perfectly fine in fact, no moba needs to. They, being the random plethora of moba makers out there, have mostly seen league and dota and then copied that success. But have gamefreak and co. made a good and different moba? No, and here’s why.

First off, this game is pay to win. While, you can play and play and play and get up to the levels of others in the game, that doesn’t prevent the fact that you can spend money, and take a shortcut, that’s what pay-to-win is, to the alternative, play-to-win option.

But excluding the monetization of the game, there are several core problems with the game in general. You are given three abilities/skills and not four compared to PC mobas, this is normal for mobile mobas, but what with the "ultimate" being on such a long cool down or charge rate, you're often stuck with two abilities, which makes combat very limiting and combos very scarce. I can’t tell if pokemon are extremely squishy, or if it’s because some others have stacked items to make it appear so, but it’s very hard to survive and function in the game when you’re being hammered so relentlessly. In traditional mobas you have minions to rely on for coverage, and turrets to rely on for shelter, but in this game, excluding the terrible regen rate on your goals, there is no safety to rely on. In addition to the goals only giving you regen effects as well as a small shield, it’s almost pointless to poke your opponents and wear them down, heavily relying on a third player to come in and change the tide.

Speaking of third players, the junglers, or speedsters to be more specific are a little on the op side. While anyone can be op with maxed out items, speedsters in general can one shot even tanks/defenders of the game, leaving you wondering, why pick them to begin with. Defenders in general are in a poor state, they aren’t very good at, well, defending. Sure they are tankier, and have cc, but it’s not enough if again, you’re getting hammered by more than one player. One defender can not prevent three players from scoring the same goal.

Most of the mechanics in the game are not done well. I get the theme of the game, but it just doesn’t work out as a moba. You have to farm to level up but then that means you’re not scoring goals, you have to defend the goal so others can’t score, but that means you aren’t farming to level up, if you’re scoring goals you’re leaving your goal unprotected, leaving enemies the option to score, and with the **** meta right now, you can’t rely on anyone.

Worst of all, something so terribly broken to the point it doesn’t even matter if you were **** all doing jack **** for the first eight minutes. If you manage to kill zapdos, your score is likely to triple, and it is likely. VERY LIKELY, mind you, to pass the opposing teams score, even if they were curb stomping you prior.

All in all the game just does not work as a competitive game, there are too many loopholes that hinder the games integrity. Even worse, gamefreak decided to partner with tencent on this, the same company who made arena of valor, the same company who ditched their own moba on the nintendo switch a couple months in. So yeah, the future of pokemon unite is not a bright one.

P.S: Do not listen to the critic reviews, most of them are not moba players and will not understand the issues with the game out right. If you're given one star food, and you've never tried five star food, then you have nothing to compare your poor experience with. pokemon unite is fundamentally, mechanically, and strategically inferior to games like league or dota by several, SEVERAL accounts, as I've listed a few reasons why already.

Dumbed down and gutted MOBA. Infuriating to play. There's also the issue of pay 2 win items. The only reason to even look at this game is because it contains Pokemon IP, which is slowly mattering less and less as the Pokemon brand continues to decline. If you want an enjoyable mobile MOBA look elsewhere. If you want another half-baked cash grab of a Pokemon themed game, look no further.

On a not-so-good side, we have the fact that the game itself doesn't tell you which pokemon uses Sp. Attack and which one doesn't. Thankfully some websites got you covered, still is a big fail here.

Another not-so-bad thing is that matches sometimes feel so QUIET, the announcer needs to be more active in my opinion. Additionally, the menu has some slight lags.

The real problem comes with the microtransactions method. If those were like a regular MOBA in which you pay only for cosmetics or experience boosts or the battler pass It wouldn't have been too much of a deal, however, here you can pay2win which is really discouraging. MOBAS are games about skill and strategy not about how much is your credit card's limit.

Since you can hold 3 Items, someone who pays money can get a crazy boost, overpowering everyone who doesn't pay2win.

Removing an in match shop like in every other MOBA where you can get Items with the Gold gained from killing players and mobs, took away deepth and replaced it with an environment where wealthy players can always dominate those with less money.

The game itself would serve as a fantastic introduction to the MOBA genre, with matches more simplified and concise than other MOBAs on market, allowing the player to grasp the core concept of the game and the genre at large quite intuitively. The introduction of chooseable movesets and item builds in the pre-game lobby lends an interesting depth to the strategy of the game, and having it done at the start of the game removes a lot of the tedium of menu navigation during the games themselves.

However, as has been stated by numerous users before me, the predatory monetisation and addiction tactics clearly utilised by the company are morally deplorable, particularly given Pokemon's appeal with younger audiences and the accessibility of the game itself allowing for young audiences to participate in the game. The game is rife with monetarily complex and predatory micro-transactions, be it for new Pokemon to play, new cosmetics, or even the aforementioned items which provide a direct advantage for any players seeking to play the game more competitively. To heavily monetise a game without any regulations or age requirements is completely irresponsible, and quite frankly revolting. I've long since lost faith in the Pokemon company's commitment to publishing quality products rather than relying solely on the appeal of the branding, but to see them stoop to such blatant levels of money-grubbery disgusts me to a point I can't ignore, and I'm inclined not to support the game at all. I only hope the negative backlash might prompt the Pokemon company and Tencent to make more ethical adjustments to their monetisation scheme, as a truly welcoming and enjoyable game does still exist beneath it all.

The game is fun. The outfits are cute. But there is one complaint I have. It's missing Ledian with maid outfit. I wonder why they have not added this. This should have been the first thing they had thought of. Why they did not add Ledian maid outfit, I will never know.

Muy entretenido! cuando lo anunciaron pensé que sería un juego de Pokemones mas para relleno, pero al momento de probarlo me lleve una grata sorpresa!! Matchmaking rapido, entretenido y hasta el momento partida estable!

    PAY-TO-WIN

Unacceptable that the Pokémon IP is being used to exploit children on what should be a safe console.

Game is amazing. People who write about donation, do not understand some things in-game.
    - Actually you don't need lvl 30 item for playing, lvl 20 is enough 'coz you will get maximum main stat from it at level 20 already.
    - You can't buy all Pokemons from the start just like you can't buy all champions in league of legends at the start. Yes here it is a bit more difficult. But it's fun

    - In my opinion battle pass is enough for that game. And yes if I decide to play some pokemon immediately I will pay 'coz this game deserve it. That's not a big deal.
I wrote about donation and not about gameplay just 'coz you can check it out for free and confirm how amazing and fun to play game is.

It is yet another sh*tty Pay to win MOBA. I tried it out because I am a Pokémon fan, but after about 3 hours, you don’t get to play much more without having to pay for upgrades. Overall not a very fun game, and very pay to win.

If you like or are curious about MOBA games, and like Pokémon, I definitely recommend you to give it a try, I mean its Free after all!

Muito viciante e dá para ver a atenção aos detalhes, inclusive com gráfico refinado e objetivo.

In a nutshell, standard free to play game. Avoid.

    - The animations and visuals are there.
    - The gameplay is fun.
    - But the whole game is plagued with Pay 2 Win microtransactions. To be fair, they are quite hidden, unless you start exploring how is the enemy pokemon 3 lvls lower still one shoting you.
    - Cap on in game currencies (so you can only get so much)

Without Pokemon nobody would care about this game.
First it is realy fun but after finish the tutorial the game gets a lot harder.
You get a lot of ingame coins to purchase new Pokemon or other stuff but after the tutorial you need to grind very hard to get these coins. If you want you can pay real money instead to get these items or new Pokemon. The Items will increase your stats

The Items will increase your stats significant so for around 100€ you can get a huge boost that will make you overpowered and you will punish any other player which has not spend money on this game.
Of course you can get these items through playing the game but in this early state of the game nobody cant reach these items without pay real money.
    The P2W destroy the game.
I know this game is developed for asian market and tencent dont care about EU/US.
The game is very laggy sometimes too but still fun until you realized you cant win against €/$

After around 50 hours i will quit playing this game.

Pokemon is quite possibly the worst creation of all time. Non of the Pokemon games including this one are ever worth your time playing.

Pay to win in a MOBA. Do you need any other explanation? Nintendo had chances to have a long-standing esports title here, but of course, they decided to go for the quick and easy money.

Don't listen to all the MOBA fans review bombing Pokemon Unite. It's a fun game and it's f2p, so it's bound to please many a Pokemon fan. Sure it has some p2w elements and needs some optimisation to gameplay, graphics and UI but definitely worth trying.

Absolutely Pay2Win. It takes a while until you notice, but it really is.
As free player, you have an inherent disadvantage, which in a competitively oriented MOBA, is an absolute no-go.

The game itself is fun but that doesnt overcome the predatory microtransactions and pay to win BS
not free to play friendly and expect to pay hundreds of dollars to get max level held items

This game is completely play to win, or you can play for a year straight in order to successfully beat everyone else. Pop in, and one or two characters can kill you within moments. It would be such a good feeling to pay, and completely destroy the competition in this game, but I don't want to give this **** company (tencent) the money. As a Nintendo fanboy, I'm ashamed.

Overall, Pokémon UNITE is a MOBA with a lot of potential. It’s already great as a casual game with friends, but I believe with some tweaking to Zapdos and removal of the “pay for held item upgrades” option, a strong competitive MOBA lives in Pokémon UNITE. Until then, it’s hard to call it much more than an above-average entry in the crowded MOBA space.

Pokémon Unite is the first attempt at creating a MOBA with the pocket monsters – and I must admit it’s a successful one. The game is fast and intense, but also easy to get a grip on. I don’t expect it to take the esports scene by storm, but it’s very enjoyable and works great in a doctor’s waiting room or on the bus. As for me, I can’t force myself to stop playing Pokémon Unite and hope the developers will keep updating it. [10/2021, p.61]

Pokémon Unite's potential is undermined by its balancing, and might not have enough to offer either of its target audiences.
