This port of a fifteen year old game adds little, or more like nothing, to the original game, even while there was still enough room to really improve the original.

A perfect example of why things that could have worked fifteen years ago, have no place today. Especially if you sell them as a premium game. [05/2020, p.78]

Frustrating, passive and pretty all mixed into one. This should have been so much better.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a beautifully rendered Pokemon game, but looks are not everything. The opening hours of the game are charming and intriguing, but the mechanics quickly become repetitive. If Mystery Dungeon would be more willing to lean into its RTS elements, the game would be an incredible experience. It is sad to say that the best part is the personality quiz at the beginning to decide which Pokemon players get to be. In its current state Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a clunky uninspired mess.

A thoroughly uninteresting roguelike that undermines the most compelling elements of both the genre and the Pokémon universe.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX is pleasant and cheery, but for every moment of depth there's an accompanying frustration.

Rescue Team lets me get to know Pokémon as actual people, often building on top of the decades of fandom and indirect characterization established by the games. Of course Charizard is in a cool rescue team that everyone looks up to. Of course Gengar the ghost is a devilish jerk who steals from others. Of course the motherly Khanghaskan, who carries around a child in her pouch, calls you sweetie when you use her storage services. It’s enough to make me want to never see another human in a Pokémon game ever again.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a perfectly serviceable remake that does just enough to advocate for its existence. As a Switch game, it is undeniably cute; the new, soft art style suits it well. I like Charmander’s little bandana. But there’s little else to praise in an otherwise tepid experience. It’s kind of like eating food you forgot to season. Sure, it’s bland, but it serves its basic purpose.

If you are not aware when a MD game has a low critic review score it means the game is great, it's been like that for over a decade. LikeIf you are not aware when a MD game has a low critic review score it means the game is great, it's been like that for over a decade. Like Explorers of Sky which is the peak of the franchise and storytelling in any Nintendo video game ever this game has terrible review scores, why is that? Well unfortunately it seems these type of games are usually reviewed by people with the attention span of a goldfish and will start shaking as soon as they need to read or use more brain cells than usual. Most of them don't review the game as a dungeon crawler either which is the whole point of the game, the IGN review is the prime example, they complain about dungeons in a dungeon crawler it almost sounds like a parody. Great remake that vastly improves over the original game while staying so very close to its roots. Looks very good, but nothing mind blowing.Great remake that vastly improves over the original game while staying so very close to its roots. Looks very good, but nothing mind blowing. Taking one of, because it might come of as repetitive, and if you don't like the style of game play, the game wont try to change your mind. Full Review »
