The only good thing about this game is the over world, the music, and the sprites. Which is not enough to even earn a ONE for me. There is almost zero interesting mechanics, save for maybe two. I feel you. Looking at these "Let's GO" games and feeling let down because of how much it looks like the mobile game came in and "ruined" the main series. I had the same concerns myself when I first saw the announcement trailer. The one thing that made me start giving "Let's GO" a chance was the announcement that this was a side game, and that we are still getting a brand new main seriesI feel you. Looking at these "Let's GO" games and feeling let down because of how much it looks like the mobile game came in and "ruined" the main series. I had the same concerns myself when I first saw the announcement trailer. The one thing that made me start giving "Let's GO" a chance was the announcement that this was a side game, and that we are still getting a brand new main series game in 2019 that is much closer to how previous games played. With all of that out of the way, let's dive into how I feel after almost 10 hours of "Let's GO, Eevee!".

Starting with the bad, I'm still not completely sold on the motion controls and would have preferred those being optional. That said, they have worked pretty decently for me while docked. In handheld mode it's incredibly frustrating though. With how shaky trying to capture something is while sitting still I don't even want to imagine how bad trying to do so in the passenger seat of a car would be. Here's hoping they add the option to turn handheld motion off in a future update. This is pretty much the only bad thing I have to say about the game at this point.

Surprisingly, I actually like the no wild battles more than I thought I would. There's a decent amount of challenge for some Pokemon encounters where they are jumping all over the screen while you try to time and aim your throw just right. The "Pokemon GO" like scoring system for better throws and chain catching the same Pokemon giving more EXP also feels really good. It seems like there are a lot more NPCs that want to battle you so there is still a lot of battling to do as you make your way to your next part of the story. I also really like the concept of chaining Pokemon to increase your chances of getting better stats, shinies, and having more rare Pokemon start spawning. And having Pokemon spawn around you in the world instead of as a random encounter is also really nice. It makes the world feel more alive and lets you pick and choose your battles. That said, they don't make it easy. I've had Pokemon spawn right in front of me on occasion, and some of them zip around making maneuvering around them difficult in tight spaces.

As far as presentation goes I'd say the art style fits very nicely. It fits the excellent style from the past games kicked up a few notches thanks to the better hardware. I tend to prefer my games more stylized as opposed to realistic because stylized games tend to age much better. Pokemon's style has been refined over the years, but largely stayed with the same core and "Let's GO" is the best it's looked so far. The music is simply fantastic. They captured what the classic 8bit versions felt like back in the day and preserved that in the transition from beeps and chirps to instrumentals. The story is more or less the same as it always was. It's not the deepest story, but when has Pokemon ever had a terribly deep story. You go out to catch Pokemon, beat gyms, and be the best like no one ever was. The journey is more about what Pokemon you find along the way and watching them grow. That is something that's still very much present in "Let's GO".

Over all I feel that this is an excellent addition to the Pokemon series. It's not perfect, but it is better than expected. I think there are some great ideas here that should be carried forward to the rest of the series, albeit with more options so players can better tailor the experience to their liking. I look forward to next year's new Pokemon game, and I'm hoping "Let's GO" does well enough for them to give us a Gen 2 revisit in this style with improvements to the system.

I'm going to give an honest review/opinion of the game, regardless of any expectations we may have assumed was there.

This game is literally a Pokémon Yellow remake, just for the Switch, so it's going to be judged just like that. However, while it may just be yet another remake of the relentless Kanto fan service we've been given... it's still a very beautiful and detailed reimagination

This game is literally a Pokémon Yellow remake, just for the Switch, so it's going to be judged just like that. However, while it may just be yet another remake of the relentless Kanto fan service we've been given... it's still a very beautiful and detailed reimagination of sprites and pixels we saw around 20 years ago; this game does give Kanto another breath that we may not have gotten otherwise. Not saying we were in need of one but it's not a bad thing. The details and such that went into partner Pokémon, the overworld, etc, are all very very good.

At first I thought it was just getting another Pokémon Go game but now I'm seeing the appeal of the simplicity that is Let's Go. Just because it's simple, doesn't necessarily mean the game is easy; I see a lot of people are saying "we lack EV systems, blah blah competitive blah" but again, this game is literally a copy and paste of Yellow... which was also nearly as simple. Still, the battles can be difficult. Yes, my level 12 Pidgey might give a level 9 Squirtle a super smack down with a 1x effective attack, but a level 15 Jigglypuff will also give said Pidgey a super smack down with a 1x effective attack. To those saying that the game is super easy and underwhelming, it's because they are knowingly trying to squeeze out every ounce of competitive technique and apply it to a game that didn't know how to compensate, kinda like Pokémon Yellow... where a lot of this didn't exist anyway. Also when going for catching chains, you can put your main team away so they don't get the massive exp boost and then bring them back when you're done, etc. There are many ways for you to circumvent the generosity the game has towards newcomers. Finally, for the difficulty excuse, my Eevee actually had a hard time against Misty's Starmie and I was nearly wiped because I was under the impression that this game would be overly forgiving for me... such as using a fire type attack on Starmie- barely did any damage, and Starmie would soon show me that I made a folly.

Overall, because it IS a simple copy and paste of Yellow, I'm not saying it's the greatest game ever but it's no worse than the game we all loved 20 years ago. It's not promising anything next generation and serves likely as a beta test game for the Nintendo Switch, so don't act all entitled; we're getting that next year.

60 dollars for a game that removes more than what it does add. A complete travesty especially in comparison to a game like smash ultimate who tries its hardest to include as much as it can and please any kind of player, a much better developer mindset to encourage. Wake up people you're being ripped off

In fact, this Pokémon game is a great intermediate between accessible gameplay and complete IV and EV hell that the new games have detracted into. It has a fresh, new, beautiful take on the Kanto region. It’s never looked this good or alive. There’s so much care put into this game, and so many different delights. It’s just wonderful to see a bellsprout walking around on it’s little twig legs, or an Ekans, at long last, slithering like an actual snake. There’s just so many things for you s and old fans to enjoy if they just embraced a few of the changes in this spin off game. It’s absolutely ridiculous that people can let a simple creative experience like this one exist without complaining about how it’s different. It’s supposed to be different. Without new things, and changes, we just get the same game every year. This game is great. You should get it. The Pokeball plus is fun too. Especially if you play Pokémon go. Expand

As somebody that's been interested in Pokémon but turned off by recent entries, this game suits me.

In recent games, there's a huge pile of legacy systems that i'm not familiar with. I don't have experience with held items, EVs, breeding, competitive play and so on. I haven't been able to get into a Pokémon game like I have this one since back in the days of Gold and Silver.

Frustrations like wild pokemon encounters and difficult team management due to uneven leveling between pokemon have been sorted. HM's no longer use one of your move slots, and TM's can be used as often as you like. It feels like a Pokémon game where customisation is easy and you aren't punished for changing elements of your team or your pokemon as often as you like.

Graphically the game looks crisp, but isn't quite as aesthetically interesting as Pokémon Sun and Moon which had some very creative environments. Let's Go features familiar environments rendered in a crisp, minimalist style. It looks fine but it doesn't make you say wow.

Yes it's very cute, yes there are elements that are clearly aimed at kids, the game is easy and most team setups will be viable... But these issues don't take away from the fact that the game is a lot of fun, and it's the most fun i've had with a Pokémon game in a while. Perhaps this is an ideal entry point for the series? It depends how well the next title manages the learning curve.

If handled poorly, then there'll just be two seperate Pokémon series, one for casuals and one for hardcore... If handled properly, then this game could act as a gateway to bring Pokémon to whole new generations of people. We'll see what happens!

I'm a veteran player, I've played all of the main games many times over and most of the side games as well. I've been playing since I was a toddler (I'm 20), so I've really matured with these games and have become familiar with all of the deeper mechanics as I've grown. Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee have cut out a lot of these mechanics, and I mean a lot. Anyone who has ever played a main game has experienced a wild Pokemon battle, which these games cut out. Of course, they're inspired by Pokemon Go, so I can respect that. I actually kind of enjoyed the wild Pokemon running around, and not having to use Repels anymore. However, the games also cut out abilities, held items, hundreds of moves, and every Pokemon after the original 151 except for Meltan and Melmetal. The thing I was looking forward to most, seeing new Pokemon in Kanto, was done..

.There is also no post-game to make up for any of this, only to beat the Master Trainers, where you face off with the same Pokemon 1v1, and it's very tedious, I haven't even finished yet. They didn't even include the Sevii Islands from the first Kanto remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen. So FireRed and LeafGreen not only have hold items, abilities, all the moves, and all of the other Pokemon that were around at the time, they have a far more in-depth post-game than these games, and they were released 14 years ago! And even though you couldn't evolve some Kanto Pokemon until the post-game in FireRed and LeafGreen, they at least included every Pokemon. I'm sad that Let's Go Eevee didn't at least include the cross-generational evolutions to the Kanto Pokemon, like Golbat's evolution Crobat, Eevee's evolutions, like Espeon and Sylveon, or Electabuzz's evolution, Electivire. They also could've included some Baby Pokemon, like Pichu, Pikachu's pre-evolution, or Magby, Magmar's pre-evolution. Speaking of evolutions, your starter Eevee, classified as the "Evolution Pokemon" in the Pokedex, can't even evolve, you have to find another Eevee (it's the same Let's Go Pikachu). Only the original 151 and Meltan exist in the game, and to evolve Meltan you have to be an avid Go player too. Not to mention you have to spend, what, $50 on the Pokeball Plus to get Mew? It's really unfortunate that a Pokemon literally costs so much money, you also can't trade the one from Go or trade one from another game, you have to buy your own...I do, however, really like walking with your Pokemon, and riding them, even though there aren't as many rideable Pokemon as I thought there'd be. Mega Evolutions are really cool and I'm glad to see them back, even though some are useless or even worse because of the lack of abilities. Same for Alola Forms, Alolan Nintetales is one of my absolute favorites, and they add at least some variety to the original 151. It's also nice to see Kanto in 3D, but I feel like the graphics are subpar for the Nintendo Switch and the games are also still on the primitive grid system, like they were made for the 3DS or something.

Overall, I think the negatives really outweigh the positives. The games are $60, they really should be just $40. FireRed and LeafGreen literally have more content and all of the Pokemon, and you could easily find a copy cheap on eBay or something, I think it's more worth it to invest in them if you want a more full Kanto experience. If you were planning on buying a Switch just for these games, don't. It's really, definitely not worth $360 for the system and the titles. If you want to play Pokemon on the Switch, wait until the 2019 new Pokemon game, no matter how bad it is, at least it'll have more content than these games. Sad to say this is the first Pokemon game I probably won't touch again.

I have adapted to every change the series has implemented and still do this day, there is not one RPG Pokemon game I dislike because they all focus on their primary purpose.
So far, I have played about 8 hours of this game and taken down 3 gyms. I'll get the negatives out of the way first.

    - The catching mechanic. Most of the time its not responsive with the motion controls and I hate how you can't battle wild Pokemon. As most people would agree who are veterans in the series or even if you have played one of the previous entries, it takes away an aspect of what makes the series great.

    - The candy system. Not all of it is bad, but it feels quite effortless to strengthen your pokemon when all you need to do is transfer pokemon and get different types of candies depending on the pokemon transferred. Its clever in a way, but could have been implemented better.

Aside from those, the changes are for the better in my honest opinion. I can understand why people in the competitive scene are frustrated with these changes and hate the game, but I really believe that those features don't actually define a Pokemon game, however serve as a great addition for end game. The primary objectives are to battle, raise and collect pokemon which this game truly delivers on. A lot of the things people are complaining about are things that were incredibly tedious in the lead up to the result people were after in previous entries.
The perfect example is breeding. First of all, none of that was in red/blue/yellow. Second of all, mindlessly breeding Pokemon and trying days/weeks to get 100% IV saps the fun out of it. Thats not saying it wasn't rewarding and I can see the appeal, but too much of it became boring and repetitive while taking the spirit out of what Pokemon is really all about.

This game goes back to the core. When it all began but in HD. There aren't as many features because its only Kanto. You dont need a fancy trade system, you dont need to have abilities. Its kept simplified and easy for everyone to get into. (whoever added the feature where you can swap Pokemon in and out of your party at anytime needs a promotion by the way.) I was in the competitive scene a bit during the X/Y days and while I enjoyed it to an extent and had some super fun battles with friends, it doesn't define what pokemon is all about. As long as you can battle pokemon, catch pokemon, battle gym leaders, take on the pokemon league, catch legendaries and take in the scenery/story, thats all a pokemon game needs which this game has.

In short, if you just want a fun experience where the core features of pokemon are what matters to you most, I recommend this. If you're expecting to create a competitive super team with breeding, abilities and held items. I can't recommend this at all. Also I have to admit, the price is quite steep for this game, but I find it very good so far.
If you're on the fence about it being easy, not all of it is. I have lost a couple of times but it can be very hand holding and I won't deny that. Don't let the barrage of negative reviews sway you from this game. If you liked red/blue/yellow, its basically the same thing but friendly for all ages and looks stunning.

This was NEVER meant to be a version of the game used at tournaments, etc. If you thought it was, that's on you for not spending your 100$ (or 60$) more carefully, Game Freak even SAID AS MUCH when they announced it, following up the announcement that a real core-series game would be soon to follow.

Regardless, for what this game is meant to be, I am enjoying it very much so thus far. It is a laid back game where I can sit on my couch after work and enjoy myself for a short bit before sleep.

    Graphics: 7/10

While not quite the major difference I had originally expected with the move to Switch, they are fairly decent. I enjoy seeing the Pokémon depicted in this great of detail, as it is a noticeable improvement even from the most recent iteration on the 3DS (Ultra Sun/Moon).

    Gameplay: 9/10

As mentioned earlier, I knew what this game was intentioned to be, and it performs brilliantly as that. It is a much more relaxed version of the core series games, either meant to bring more casual players into the fold or (Tin foil hat on) a sort of test-run for the core series game coming later. I enjoy using the Pokeball plus controller to play the game and using it to catch wild pokemon. While I do miss having battles in the wild, the fact that "grinding" is still available through catching repeatedly AND that loop is reinforced via sending duplicates to the Professor (and receiving EV candies in return), it works for me. Currently have gotten to the 4th gym and have thouroughly enjoyed myself thus far.

    Performance: 9/10

Not much to say here, the motion controls have worked great with the custom controller so far. I have experienced ONE issue of Framerate drops (In Viridian Forest) and it lasted roughly 3 seconds. No glaring issues to speak of here at all.

    Sound: 10/10

I love the updated soundtrack for this game , deriving most of its music from Red/Blue/Yellow and simply updating it from the 16-bit sound from the games or yore. Maybe due to nostalgia, maybe not, but the first time I fought a gym leader in this game I was distinctly reminded of a 9 year old me , sneaking to stay awake in my bunk bed to keep playing and finally get to Brock the first time. Absolutely nothing negative to report from the Soundtrack from my perspective, excellent work.

I don't care about the target of these games but in my eyes this is unacceptable and a symptom of laziness on GF's part.
I don't want GF to hold my hand during the entire game, i want challenge. They should have made a game where competitive is accessible by more people, they should have introduced mechanics to make the training of competitive pokemon faster. i don't want to talk about pokeball plus and GO connectivity, i think they are garbage.
I feel GF is making fun of us veterans, i can't see anything of what i love about pokemon in these games which recycle an old region, only add a few new mechanics and trashes a lot of consolidated mechanics from 20 years of franchise.
I think I'll play Zelda BOTW since i didn't finish it, perhaps i'll start master mode (yes GF that is a good game, and i'm not talking about the open world, i am talking about the technical aspects of that game, if pokemon ever reached that level i would be the happiest man in the world. I know it will never happen but dreaming is beautiful). I'm waiting with pleasure the 2019 titles with little hope for a change compared to the last years.

I was very 'eh' about this game initially. I remember first watching the trailer, losing my smile, and just kind of writing these games off as a do not buy. I kept watching trailers though, and eventually decided to give them a shot even if I didn't think they were going to do well. I was wrong. These games are amazing in every sense of the word. They're fun, beautiful looking, beautiful sounding with the remastered music, and a real throw back into the roots of what pokemon was meant to be.

Yes, wild battles are gone. Yes, breeding is gone. Yes, it only has the first 151 aside from the newly revealed pokemon, but it doesn't stop them from being fun. It has it's core elements and a lot of cool things they added that weren't even part of the original games. I won't say what those are to avoid spoiling, but it's worth your money. Even if you're eh like I was, you might just find yourself surprised.

I did buy the Pikachu version, but decided to post this here since they're basically the same game aside from which pokemon you start with.

However, this is the year 2018. The game additionally has certain flaws.
-1 Star: Mandatory Joy Con Usage. This game does not allow for the Pro Controllers, as Nintendo wants you to purchase, and repurchase their $45 joy cons as they break yearly. As the joy sticks are extremely janky, they WILL break yearly, so you will be paying a reoccuring $45 payment to continue playing this game. There is really no good reason to do this.... well, apart from greed.
-1 Star: No matchmaking. Earlier Pokemons had matchmaking. This Pokemon, which is $20 more pricey and on a more powerful system, does not allow for matchmaking. Why not? Because the game was rushed.
-1 Star: Removal of passive pokemon abilities. There was absolutely no reason to do this other than laziness.
-1 Star: Removal of Held items. This has been in pokemon games since Generation 2. Again - Laziness.
-1 Star: Unable to trade between accounts on the same device. I want to trade pokemon with my daughter. I cannot. I have to literally buy two switches to do so. Because - Again, Greed and laziness.

So Yes. Great game, but greed and laziness have hurt it significantly. I will give it credit where it is due and grade it a 5 out of 10. It saddens me that I could not give it a perfect score, but there is simply no excuse to remove features which have been in the game for over a decade at this point. Shame on you, Gamefreak.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's Go is an interesting re-imagining of the Kanto region: For better and for worse.
My first gripe is just that: It's Kanto. I've nothing against the region itself, but there's nothing really new aside from a fresh coat of paint. Sure there's master trainers, and a few rematches/extra battles, but what is there to really do after that? I found myself wondering "so... what next?" There's no post-game story arcs, no Battle Frontier, let alone Battle Maison/Tree, and the lack of a Battle Spot and the dumbing-down of competitive mechanics rules out even putting together a team to take online and battle for rank. You're limited to only the first 150 Pokemon (151 if you bought Mew for $50), along with the new Meltan line, so completing the Pokedex is a breeze. Even Fire Red and Leaf Green had the Sevii Islands to play with afterwards. But this game doesn't have much of anything. It's Kanto, and that's it.
So what do I do now? Grind all of my Pokemon to level 100? And then what? The only thing I can think of would be to wait for DLC, but when the game itself already costs $60, I'm not looking forward to the prospect of having to pay even more money to enjoy myself further, when I hardly felt the game had offered me anything worthy of that price in the first place.
Now, the main story itself is fine and enjoyable. It's extremely easy, but it's fine. I do like that they at least added in Alolan Forms, Mega Evolution, and at least one new Pokemon line. I like the customization options in regards to your character AND starter Pokemon, as well. I like that my Pokemon follow me, and I like that I can ride them. While people complain about the gym requirements, I had met all of them my first time entering each gym anyway. In that regard, they were a non-issue. However, I can definitely understand (and I certainly agree with) the complaints about the removal of wild battles. Some see this as a positive, but to me, it felt as though the thrill of the battle, and any real challenge catching Pokemon was just eliminated. The wild Pokemon in the game felt more like targets than actual creatures. And with no held items or abilities, trainer battles pretty much came down to who had the type advantage, and that was honestly pretty boring, since there's so much more depth than that in an actual Pokemon game. I will say that it is cool that the candy system can allow just about any Pokemon to be viable in online battles, but, again, no Battle Spot.
Overall, I would not recommend this game to any new Pokemon trainers, and certainly not to any veterans. In my opinion, it's not a good representation of what a Pokemon game can be. Pokemon was never a difficult series of games, but there was always enough depth to keep it fun. This game throws that depth out the window and expects you to just enjoy it for its nostalgic value. To give credit where credit is due, there is some good to it, but certainly not enough content to justify a $60 price tag.

The graphics are also pulled straight out of pokemon go and look very generic, The pokemon sun and moon graphics would look nicer scaled up to the switch screen with the cinematic camera angles, unique art-style and varied use of lighting and the black character outlines that mimic the anime style.

The controllers are also lacking as the game features no support for the pro controller and undocked mode you are forced to play with only one joycon due to the motion controlled catching mechanic, even though I calibrated my joycons several times pokeballs continued to throw over to the left side of the screen completely missing the pokemon requiring me to throw to the right to balance things out.

The performance is overall a solid 30fps but strangely there is stutter that happens any time you move the character from a standing position almost like the animation is not complete and this feels very jarring.

Overall the game falls short of many other previously released pokemon games and even newcomers might find this game boring due to how easy it is.

I grew up playing Pokémon blue and fondly remember battling my first Pokémon in the tall grass with squirtle by my side. A somewhat challenging elite 4 and gyms kept me clamoring to raise more and better monsters as the generations went on. Granted the games have never been incredibly challenging but rarely were they insultingly easy even for a child from 7-10. However the new releases of LGPE have come across as a step forward on a couple of quality of life improvements but many steps backward in game design and implementation.
Improvements such as the box storage being accessible at all times, and easier access to nature changes in the wild will not go unnoticed and actually being able to ride the larger monsters will also be a hit with Pokémon fans. That being said the game does away with classical capture mechanics such as weaken, inflict status then attempt capture for the less intriguing pokeball throw using the inescapable motion controls (yes they are required for gameplay in dock mode while the gyro is used in handheld mode).
The novelty wears thin as you realize you must do this exact same wrist motion over and over to complete gym entrance tasks and in some cases level up a Pokémon or find a rarer breed through chaining more common breeds. As always Gamefreak misses the chance to make some of these mechanics optional (such as motion control) to please all kinds of fans in order to pander to mobile gamers who are familiar with a freemium app. Also negatives include the removal of all Pokémon from generation 2-7 and the inclusion of 151st Pokémon Mew trapped behind the purchase of a $50 joy con shaped like a pokeball.
Sadly this game tries to deliver nothing more than a short lived nostalgia high to those who played Pokémon 20 years ago then abandoned the series quickly thereafter. Like many developers, Gamefreak has chosen the path of least resistance to make a quick buck by recreating a 20 year old game tile by tile only to add a fresh coat of paint and destroy many of the more strategic mechanics that both veterans and new comers appreciate such as hold items and Pokémon abilities. In the wake we are left with a game meant to excite old feelings of adventure and excitement only to be left with a 10-12 hour main story filled with flicking wrists at random Pokémon we don’t want to catch but have to and a story which has changed so little that we know what will happen at almost every step. I encourage people to watch playthroughs before buying this game and ending up with $60 taken from their wallets and plenty of regret for trusting a franchise that Should know better. This being said I will cautiously watch for Generation 8 news where Gamefreak will have the chance to win back some of the fans who are disappointed with this entry to the series.

The game itself is a barebones remake of Pokemon Yellow, with almost no additional content over those games. The remake of this game that was made before 15 years ago on the GBA has more content that this game.
First off, there's only 153 Pokemon in the game, leaving a good 80% of the Pokemon being missing. That lower number of Pokemon doesn't result in more quality animations though, as an example Blastoise only shoots water moves out of its head, while even Pokemon Stadium on the N64 was able to get 2 shots of water moves to come out of its cannons. The models are all reused from the 3DS games too, however one of the few redeeming features is that following Pokemon in the overworld are back, even if it's a cut asset from Pokemon Sun and Moon.
The overworld though is a mess, the maps are just 1:1 recreations of the old Gameboy maps in a similar engine to the 3DS games with an jarring blocky artstyle, it's basically the 3DS games with a HD filter, phone games can put out better worlds than this. This puts shame to other flagship titles on the Switch like Mario Odyssey, Zelda BotW and Xenoblade 2. The world itself does not translate into the game at all. The new wild Pokemon mechanics just make the world feel very cramped on unoptimised maps.
As for wild Pokemon battles, they're gone. You're now thrown into a minigame where all you can do is throw Pokeballs or berries like in Pokemon GO, along with forced motion controls in docked mode, with no option to use the pro controller. Trainer battles still exist, but they're removed a lot of core mechanics such as held items, abilities and most of the old moves to reduce strategy in the game.
The difficulty is far too easy, most trainers now only have 1 or 2 underleveled Pokemon, sometimes not even with four moves, while you have a team of 6 who all gain experience after catching and battling to steamroll the opponent. You can't even turn off all 6 getting experience like in the older games for a bit of a challenge. Bosses in the gyms also have requirements such as grind up to a certain level to challenge the gym, while you easily win with overleveled Pokemon. The game always holds your hand, the starter Pokemon even learns broken moves that trivialise the game. Even the half baked 2 player option makes every fight in the game a 2 on 1 fight to make battling even more mindless.
The above feature also tanks the framerate in playing the game. GameFreak may not be the best programmers ever going off the original Red and Blue's glitches, but this is unacceptable with effectively a 3DS game on vastly superior hardware when far more complex games like the upcoming Smash Ultimate will have 60 FPS at all times.
The game barely adds any new features either while cutting out a load of others. For example in the Game Corner, due to gambling laws this was removed, however in older remakes like Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver, GameFreak added in a minigame outside of Japan to replace them, however here the player is just told "We're out of coins", as there's no game. Other features like Secret Bases, Pokeathlon or new areas to explore are completely absent, even the Sevii Islands which were in the Fire Red and Leaf Green remakes of Red and Blue are gone.
Online features are almost nonexistent compared to previous games, here you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to trade and battle with people not on your friend list, and it costs 20 quid a year now to play online, the player is paying for a worse experience. You can't even use the cloud save feature for these games.
The price of the games is not worth your money either, this game is 60 quid, a good 20 over what the handheld games were in the past. A Pokeball joycon costs another 50 quid and is the only way to get Mew, this is pure greed for something which was included with Heartgold and Soulsilver in the past. There's far better value for money in buying a used copy of the originals or remakes or for 10 quid on the 3DS.
After you're done with the bare bones campaign which holds your hand, there's almost no significant post game content which fans have been looking for since the DS games bar a couple of battles with previous characters. The postgame consists of fighting master trainers in 1 on 1 battles with the same Pokemon, this boils down to tediously grinding up every Pokemon in the game to challenge them, and to throw excess Pokemon into the mixer for candy to buff them.
Overall, these games just aren't worth it, and no excuses like it's for kids or it's a spinoff excuse this dumpster fire. This is GameFreak doing as little as possible to make as most money as possible from people buying this for nostalgia or for people who will eat up any rubbish as long as it has Pokemon on the box. If GameFreak gets away with all these problems this is the future of the series.

I went into this expecting even some semblance of a nostalgia trip because I sure as hell didn't like the concept when it was initially shown. Seven hours in and the game feels like a chore. I usually always finish pokemon games, but this time I'm not entirely sure if I'm going to keep going on with it.

This is the laziest, most disgusting cashgrab in Pokemon history. Kanto is basically copy pasted from a game TWENTY YEARS OLD, the only improvement is the new graphics, but that's the least you can expect out of a remake.
The idea of making a new side-series to help new players get into Pokemon was great, but the execution is HORRIBLE. This is a mobile-tier game on a home console system sold for 60$, plus an accessory for another 40$ that locks you out of obtaining Mew (it's obvious why), and the game doesn't even support a pro controller? THIS is the grand entrance of Pokemon on a home console, when Mario got Odyssey and Zelda got Breath of the Wild? The framerate is of course abyssmal, but that's something we've been fed constantly since X/Y, so nothing new here. The only thing that stops this game from being a 3DS game is the resolution, and that is telling enough. If any other franchise tried to push such a **** lazy, soulless husk of a game for 60$, it would be pummeled into the ground by negative reviews, but since it's Pokemon, nostalgia blinded normies are trying to protect the game by giving 10s without even providing any legitimate praise other than "it's cute and pretty" or complainig about negative reviews. There's no point in paying at least 60$ to play through generation I AGAIN when you have Fire Red/Leaf Green or Virtual Console re-releases of Red, Blue and Yellow. I've bought almost every mainline game in the past, got tricked into buying Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (Ultra changes my ass), but this time I'm done, Game Freak will have to up their game next time if they want to have me on board.

But comfort is like a spice you add to a dish, you can't expect to to singlehandendly redeem every single bad decision. The gameplay and mechanics aspect was sadly neglected so you end up having a ridicolously easy game, boring and unengaging catch mechanics, a painfully dulled battle and EV system and all of this takes place in the same ol' kanto we all already know by memory by now. Sure, it might be fun for new players but so is every single other pokemon game, simpler mechanics don't end up mattering much when pokemon is already simple and approachable by design, and those games offer a lot more than lgpe does. Overall it's not a bad game per se, just lacking and a bit of a letdown because you know gamefreak is capable of much more. Might not be the best thing the series needs right now either. Expand

This game clearly sacrificed its natural audience by ruining any shreds of difficulty the game had prior. Here's some gripes we all have:

    • There is no PC, so you can only have the Pokemon in your party. • Your starter cannot leave your party, so you're stuck with it for good. • The wild battle system is replaced with "Pokemon Go" ring-toss catching, so there's no fun involved there.

    • The wild battle system is replaced with "Pokemon Go" ring-toss catching, so there's no fun involved there.
    • Held items and abilities straight up don't exist, removing all competitive strategy.
    • The EXP share is forced on, so you'll be overlevelled all the time, compounding the fact that your Eevee/Pikachu is forced into your party, because they will ALWAYS be over-levelled with no option to replace or change them.
•There are MANDATORY Level and type advantage requirements to enter gyms. Some critics say that "this doesn't remove difficulty because you only have to pass it once to enter so you can still take on the gym with whatever party you like", except to do so you need to release a beloved team member because the PC doesn't exist.
    • There are 656 Pokemon that have been cut, and the game and added only 2 both of whom are very mediocre.
    • There are absolute overkill moves like "Bouncy Bubble" and "Zippy Zap" that have high power and always crit, which is just a story- and meta-ruining set combined into one. Great.
    • The online mode is a complete failure, and has little to no value.

Some would argue this game is a good primer or step in for children or elderly, or new fans, but I disagree, in so far as the complexity gradient between this and any actual Pokemon game (Even the originals) is almost equal to the step up without this game in the equation. Save yourself the cash and get one of the DS or 3DS titles. My recommendations would be HGSS, XY, or USUM. Please, do not support this game. It's not worth your money, nor your time.

This game is a massive step backwards and if this is the "base or starting point" for the next 20 years to come, then this franchise might actually be over.

The Pokeball plus is so hard to use you will end up selecting the wrong option on the menus. I reverted back to joycon pretty quickly.

With JRPGS on the Switch like Xenoblade 2 and Octopath this is an absolute disgrace which is riding on the Pokemon brand, which I honestly can't see the attraction too. To me Pokemon are just a bunch of stupid cartoon sick (not cute) looking animals.

While I was skeptical at first about the way wild encounters worked, it actually ended up being one the best features. Going through a cave, randomly getting attacked by 1,000,000 zubats was one of the most annoying things about older pokemon games. Now, I can pick and choose my battles, and seeing the pokemon actually moving around in the world is awesome.

The graphics in the game are amazing. Whether I was playing on the TV or handheld the pokemon looked great, and the animations for their attacks were even better.

Even the way that switching your pokemon in and out of your party is better. Instead of having to go to a computer at the pokecenter every time you want to change, instead you just open up your menu and switch whenever you want.

While the Pokemon Go catching aspect I dont truly care for, the rest of the game makes up for it, and I hope they employ some of these features in future games.

Oh, yeah, and I forgot the reuse of animations, models and looks like textures too. At this point I'd prefer just to wait and emulate it on Yuzu or the other Switch emulator. Doesn't look that bad though, but the shadows are just a pixelated mess, and the animation to run just feels off, and then the fps drops.

-ASSETS WILDLY RECYCLED: Pokemon and NPC overworld animations (walking pokemon animations found in the SM/USUM data), pokemon battle animations (only 153 pokemon + alola forms. Most of these models being at least five years old. Iconic pokemon with no polished animations, e.g. blastoise shooting water from his forehead, pikachu remaining motionless for kicking moves, etc.). Many costs were cut but no advantage was taken from that.

    OST
BEAUTIFULLY BORING: Same old Kanto tunes, orchestra edition. Much more interesting renditions can be found in fanmade remixes on YouTube.

    GAMEPLAY
-Motion controls get in the way when catching pokemon in handheld mode.

-No motivation to catch pokemon other than fulfilling one gym requirement and getting one gift pokemon, as the chosen starter can easily take care of any battle in the game on its own.

-General lack of challenge provides little rewarding. You can just mindlessly smash a and watch the game win for you.

-Completely unbalanced AV and candy system makes most if not all the post game content superfluous, as Master Trainers have little chance to do anything to your overleveled, candy-powered pokemon.

-Riding Pokemon feels pointless in a game with such small routes that can be traversed in seconds

-EV's and abilities removed for the sake of simplication, but IV's and Natures have been kept. For those not familiar with these terms, EV's affect pokemon stats and can easily be earned and modified by the player in previous games. The same applies to abilities to some extent, with certain limitations for hidden abilities. On the other hand, IV's and natures both affect stats but are completely random and can't be modified in any way on an already caught pokemon in Let's Go. In short, the easily modifiable values have been removed, while the random, rigid ones have been kept. Again, for the sake of "simplification".

-Barebones online functions despite them requiring a fee

-Let's Go requires a pokeball plus joycon and a smartphone that can run pokemon go to be completed

    PERSONAL APPRECIATION

With Let's Go, GameFreak intends to give newcommers to the Pokemon series a welcoming starting point. However, I believe they have failed to do so. Keeping a target audience (kids who haven't been able to play go or kids who get easily distracted by mobile games) in mind, great amounts of content have been cut out of Let's Go to make them simpler games. Next year, a new core pokemon game will be released. People who came back to pokemon in Let's Go will probably be facing again over 900 pokemon, abilities, a huge amount of new moves, new (to them) mechanics such as EV's, an online metagame, etc. If they found all those things too intimidating to get into pokemon before, they will surely do so again next year. If Let's Go is meant to be an introduction to the series for new gamers, it is certainly not a suitable one.

From the moment Let's Go was announced, Gamefreak has labeled them as mainline games. Junichi Masuda, the director of these games, has stated in multiple occasions that he believes children too incompetent to get into the pokemon games (despite them always having been targeted at kids). The result of this is a game that constantly keeps a condescending attitude towards children, holding their hand each step of the way and keeping them from facing any sort of challenge. Pokemon Let's Go caters to kids, but it doesn't try to stimulate them in any shape or form. It doesn't try to provide challenges suitable for their age. Instead, it feels them with empty instant gratification much like fast food does. This is detrimental to any child's development, as their cognitive skills are being disregarded. Gamefreak is calling children stupid and doing their bit to keep them stupid because of that. The games are pretty and shiny and cute, yes, but as a parent, I wouldn't let my kid play something that constantly tells them they are dumb -and I believe you shouldn't either. Children are young, not stupid. They love learning, finding out how things work, making new discoveries. Let's Go offers none of that -only dull entertainment.

The last thing to address is the games' quality. Some call them spin off, some (including gamefreak) call them mainline. Others argue about the difference between mainline and core pokemon games. The truth is, this is a Nintendo Switch game, and Pokemon is the highest grossing media franchise in the world. Simply the fact that these games look like upscaled 3DS games should be enough not to give them a chance. Graphics aren't everything, yes, but in the case of Let's Go they are a clear representation of how much effort, thought and love has been placed on this product. The answer is: none.

Quite honestly, it's a game with an identity crisis on what it wants to be and when you boot up the game to choose your language for the first time and you're met with the message "If you're not sure what to do, ask an adult to help you choose a language", then it makes itself quite known that this is a game for actual children. No, not children like you and I were back when Red/Blue/Yellow came out and the game never so much as offered its hand to us, forcing us to trudge our own adventure in the muck and mire - no this game is made for a group much younger than that. This is made for the 4-year olds who play Pokemon Go on their parent's smartphones and that notion quite clearly carries the theme throughout the entire game. The constant tutorials, reminders, hand-holding and over simplification of the game is downright insulting. And to the people who say "Well this game is not for you, it's for the kids!" Well, you're wrong on both accounts. Number one, it's wrong because adults are quite enthusiastic to play this game themselves. I can't tell you how many reddit posts I've read that have 25-40 year old men talking about their excitement and wonder for this game like a pair of shiny keys being jingled in front of their face. Number two, it's wrong because it even fails on a level to be a proper representation of pokemon to children because twenty-something years ago, you and I were kids at the time of pokemon coming out and was it as mindless and over-simplified as Let's Go? Absolutely not. Even if someone were to play through this game in its entirety and somehow like it, the version of the game they played is nothing like the actual pokemon games. Leveling up is way too fast aka there is no grind, pokemon battles are not random encounters, your interaction with your pokemon is near non-existent in the actual games and the list goes on and on. So when someone makes the assumption "I enjoyed Let's Go, maybe I'll enjoy X and Y or Sun and Moon" then they'll find out that the Pokemon experience they thought they were getting was nothing of the sort. It was a fabrication, a casualization of the series and that's really saying something when Pokemon is pretty darn casual to start with.

In short, this game is really for nobody unless you're 4-5 years old and want to transition from Pokemon Go to another mobile game, just given a fresh coat of paint and the tagline "Hey adult men from 25-40, remember Kanto?". And if you are an adult seriously thinking about getting this game, just get Pokemon Fire Red for the game boy advance if you're really starving for some Gen 1 OG pokemon action.

When it worked just fine for over 20 years without seeing kids gouging their eyes out at how difficult the mechanics of baby's first jrpg are? Gamefreak apparently thinks they do. Terribly out of touch and having a track record for not listening to players and removing the features they like this time they're insulting the intelligence of kids and go players alike. Masuda is a delirious hack and should resign, I'm a passionate competitive player and I fear and I quote ''let's go will become the pillar of the franchise for the next 20 years''. that would ruin the competitive scene completely, please sends a message to gamefreak to remind them not only this is unneeded but there's a noticeable competitive fanbase that loves the game as it is.

    No Safari
No games at the game corner, just text
Animations are completely recycled from USUM, including the walking animations for Pokemon

Gym Requirements force you to have an advantage over the gym
They also made traditional nuzlocke rules impossible
Exp share can not be turned off

AVs increase stats beyond what stats normally can be and can be maxed out in every stat, making Mega Slowbro+Chansey Core nearly unbreakable
Btw Megas don’t require items since no Pokemon can hold items
    No abilities either
They didn’t bother making a skeleton aerodactyl for the museum
Co op is wasted potential with it making battle 2v1s with P1’s team and no other functions
Following Pokemon and Co-op will likely be dropped in Gen 8

Pokemon has always been kid friendly and especially accessible to newcomers, dumbing down the mechanics for no reason but to see how much money they can make with a low effort game shoudn't be encouraged no matter the franchise. Please don't support companies being slimy and holding back on you

The story and game progression itself is like the original Yellow, you get your snowflake pokemon with inflated stats and can pretend to be ash like in the Anime, feel free to remove it to give the game the "normal" difficulty.

The pokemon now follows you! they can pick up items, some of them have unique interaction and overall make the pokemon world feel more alive.

Online stille there, but limited to simple trade with randoms using a code(or a friend if you put the same one) and simple and double battle

Competitively, it's only gen 1 with alola pokemon, and minor moves changes, not as deep as other main game pokemon, but you get the basics, No abilities or held items.

The game is fun and relaxing overall, don't expect something grandiose, if you are nostalgic and like kanto go ahead, and if you have kid you can have a fun co op experience.

This is honestly a tough recommendation, as there is a lot to love in this game. For every pro, there's another con to counter it out. The overworld roaming Pokemon is an incredible addition, however the motion control capture mechanics feels like a game of luck. Sometimes you'll get perfect catches, other moments you'll be throwing Pokeballs into orbit. The complete removal of items, wild battles, and abilities also severely limit the game, making the majority of battles a cakewalk as long as players know type advantages and don't skip trainers fights. Also, the Awakened Stats system completely destroys the game balance, making essentially every team broken if maxed out.

Overall, it's a good enough recreation of my journey through Yellow all those years ago, however nostalgia can only carry a game so far, and sadly, I feel there could've been so much more added to satisfy both sides of this game. If this is you're first Pokemon game, of course it's a recommendation, otherwise I feel that unless you really love Kanto, you might be better off waiting for a discount, or waiting for next year's game all together.

If you looked up the phrase "By trying to please everybody, they had pleased nobody" on a quotation website it would have three things: a citation for Aesop's fables, a picture of this game, and a picture of its sister version. Let's start by getting into the knitty-gritty of of the matter...

    GAMEPLAY
Gameplay is largely the same as past entries. You get a starter Pokemon, travel a region, catch more Pokemon and raise them, battle other characters with said Pokemon, become Champion of the region, and eventually become a Pokemon Master. But unlike past games you no longer encounter Pokemon in certain areas at random you can now see the Pokemon on the overworld and interact with them in the same way you do in a similar manner to Pokemon Go, wild battles only exist in a few notable instances. Your Pokemon gain experience Some Pokemon species are not present in this version (as is the case for a vast majority of past games) and must be obtained via trading or transferring the Pokemon from Go. The original 151 Pokemon (plus Meltan and Melmetal, which must be caught in Go and transferred) are the only Pokemon present in the game. All other species, including ones that evolve from the original 151, are not obtainable at all.

    STORY
The story is retread of the one present in Yellow (which this game and its sister version are remakes of). Once you complete it that's the end of it outside of Master Trainers (of which here are are 153, one for each Pokemon species available in the game), and battling certain Trainers after certain conditions are met.

    GRAPHICS
One of two things that these games have above most Pokemon games, they're a step up quality-wise when compared to the 3DS entries (X/Y, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Sun/Moon, and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon) but it's somewhat tarnished when compared to other Switch games. One half-point for trying.

    MUSIC
The second thing that his game gets right. The new orchestral takes on classic tunes is good, but the choices of instruments and feeling of certain tracks (Lavender Town's theme and the Pokemon Tower theme have lost a bit of their creepiness and the lack of Japanese instruments is iffy) can leave one wanting something more pleasing to the ear holes. One half-point for trying.

    PRICE
$60 is way too hefty a price tag considering what these games offer. This problem also exacerbated when other items like the Poke Ball Plus (needed to get Mew), Pokemon GO (needed for Meltan and, if you're willing to wait a LONG time to get it due to single Candy payouts from catching Meltan at low spawn rates and 20km Buddy distances, Melmetal), and the Switch itself (if you don't have one already) are needed to truly complete the game. Bundles of containing the first and third items along with game are available, but they are limited in supply and are most certainly being scalped in the resale market like the Pokemon Go Plus was when it first came out.

    OVERALL
Pokemon Let's Go Eevee (and Let's Go Pikachu) is an entry that feels like, and is, a bare-bones game of which only the most desperate of Pokemon players (and children) will not feel buyer's remorse over regardless of how much cash they paid to get them. If you're a Pokemon player that wants a little more meat in terms of everything else, wait for the 2019 entry and PRAY that the parties involved keep their word on saying that Go/Let's Go mechanics stay separate from these and future non-Let's Go entries.

Overall, I did have a blast playing Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee. I did like visiting all the cities of the original Pokémon games again and seeing all the original Pokémon. However, I really did not like how they changed how you capture Pokémon and I did not like the setup of the Pokémon boxes. For those who want to play this game for nostalgia reasons, I would recommend waiting until a sale comes out before purchasing. For newcomers to Pokémon, this is a really good introduction into the world of Kanto.

It’s hard to make sense of the game that’s basically a Switch port of iOS/Android remake of Pokemon Red/Green. Is it a step forward, step backward – or maybe just a shameless cash-in? Turns out, it’s a great remake – the world looks exactly as we imagined it back when we were staring at black and white pixels of original Red/Green. [Issue#235, p.44]
