The company he works for is going bankrupt, so to save it, Olimar must salvage the treasure buried all over the planet. Of course, he'll need the help of the Pikmin to do that--he can't do anything by himself. Control one of two main characters--Olimar or his assistant--as you command your Pikmin to defeat enemies, propagate more Pikmin, collect precious doodads, and solve puzzles. With unlimited time, new colors of Pikmin, and two-player cooperative play, Pikmin 2 improves on the original in many ways. Expand

Once again this is a port of a port. Or a slightly tweaked emulation of a port? It's journeyed from GameCube to Wii to Switch, and there's evidence of every one of those stops on the journey still in place here as it's reached its final destination. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 19]

Pikmin 2 is a fantastic follow-up to the 2001 original that expands upon its predecessor's core gameplay in some neat and well-considered ways. This is a bigger game, with more areas and dungeons to explore, a larger variety of Pikmin to work with, multiple protagonists to control, and a few extra modes thrown in for good measure. It may be a bare-bones port, and we do really miss those Duracells, but this is a game that's aged remarkably well and, with foundations as delightfully entertaining and inventive as this, it's still an experience that we highly recommend checking out on Switch.
  3. Pikmin 2 might not be a stone-cold essential like the first game, but it’s still brilliant and well worth playing in 2023.

Pikmin 2 follows Nintendo's skilful adaptation of its classic series and the result at hand is an all-round marvelous and high quality conversion of the original to today's age. Keeping the essence of the experience intact, Pikmin 2 on the Nintendo Switch is able to provide a captivating, evolving, accessible and in-depth adventure comparable to the original nearly twenty years ago, but adapted to today's standards, thus opening the doors to new players while stimulating the renewed interest on the Pikmin series at a much larger scale.

The new port of Pikmin 2 is a fine way to experience this game, but whether or not you think it’s trash or treasure is going to depend on your preferences. It’s at least cheap enough that you aren’t going to be too out of pocket to give it a try. It’s probably worth it just for the first few hours when it’s at its prime. But just beware that after introductions are made, it’s going to throw you in a hole.

Pikmin 2 is a tough game to recommend, especially with the brand new Pikmin 4 featuring a much more successful version of its key feature, the caverns. The high difficulty requires a lot of investment from the player to overcome, and the lack of bespoke design underground makes the journey to overcome those obstacles too tedious to feel rewarding. Dedicated fans who want to be pushed into learning the intricacies of Pikmin’s mechanics will find something special in the unique challenge, but pretty much everything else about Pikmin 2 has been pulled off much better in another game in the franchise.

Pikmin 2 still offers itself as the hardest in the franchise, with its randomized cave system, enemies, and bosses. The altered motion control is probably the best compromise they've done when implemented to both 1 and 2 as this becomes easier for handheld users not having to tilt their entire console by 90 degrees just to throw a pikmin farther.

I love that I am able to relive my experience of Pikmin 2 in a enhanced, HD port on the go, it feels quite the fever dream. I'm excited to say that this port is definitely worth it, and considering that it's only $5 more than its Nintendo Selects counterpart if you buy the bundle, I'd say it's worth trying it to experience the originals or play it again for the nostalgia.

There's also the case of the unneeded censorship in the dialogue. Changing the product placement could be ignored, but this was unacceptable.
If you're okay with these things, this game is for you.
