  • Summary: Paradox Soul is a 2D explorative action-shooter hybrid. You play Dr Alli Rose, a research scientist who stumbles across a peculiar test facility, determined to unravel the mystery and take on whatever evil is in her path.     Paradox Soul is a Metroidvania that manages to keep the spirit of the genre despite being smaller in scope. Mix in some decent collectibles and combat scenarios, this is a great title any fan of the genre should try.

    On its own, Paradox Soul is an average Metroidvania that will keep you reasonably entertained throughout its fairly short duration thanks to its creepy art direction and atmospheric soundtrack. But when you look at it next to some of the more accomplished examples of the genre on Switch, its repetitive nature and uninspired cover-shooting mechanics hold it back from being truly recommendable.

The art style is minimalist and I quite liked it, but it may not be for everyone. Boss battles are good, and the moment to moment gameplay is what you would expect from a basic run and gun.

    I quite enjoyed the presentation, and the fact that I could finish the game in a single sitting.

    I would recommend this game to fans of the genre and those looking for a short 2D experience. I got it on sale and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality.    … Expand

    I purposefully picked this game to play because I wanted to play something simple and not to deep.     It's an almost-but-not-quite Metroidvania, with cover based combat. There are few enemies, and the combat gets fairly repetitive. The player only has two pips of health, but any death simply respawns in the same room with two pips making this not that big a deal. It essentially allows two pips per room.

    The boss battles are pattern based, and play fairly well. Once you've figured out how to beat them it's a matter of carefully avoiding their projectiles and firing their way.

    In order to finish the game there is one last task to do at the end and I found this completely unclear. I ended up having to look up a guide to finish this one. I think there is meant to be a twist of some sorts at the end but I really didn't get it!

    The atmosphere was pretty good. When you start, you are pretty weak and I found myself carefully almost "prodding" the dead bodies to see what's going to jump out at me.

    As usual I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't port the achievements found on other platforms to Switch.    … Expand
