Incredible art, music, voice acting and story. The JRPG style gets a little grindy but is managed well in this title.

    + Epic and gorgeous soundtrack
+ World inspired by the golden age of RPGs is gorgeously realised
+ Puzzle-like combat mechanics are excellent
+ Character classes, levelling and equipment management has great depth

    - Lack of compelling overarching story and character interaction
    - Writing and dialogue is entirely skippable at times
    - Pacing is a bit off given the 8 different paths

Pixel JRPG had a strong start with it's visuals and music presentation. Sadly, story it self is too short and generic to be a story driven game. The combat improvement also stops half way into the game, making it very tiresome and repetitive through out rest of the game. Very disappointed on how it became bland very quickly into the game.

How would you rate a game that purposefully creates a disjointed story with a hidden unifying (and extremely hard) story chapter, then proceeds to bloat the gameplay with grind and repetitive design to last 80-100 hours? I gave it 10 hours and the other reviews' many criticisms are on point. Avoid.

The actual story surrounding these characters are generic and bland as heck. The first two characters i pick were literally the exact same character but with different settings. The third character i got the writing took a nose dive which surprised me because i didn't think it could get worse. All the characters started talking as if an alien learned to speak english by watching highschool theater. I had to check multiple times to confirm that i was actually playing the same game. Do not get this game. it is trash.

This game is a great looking and awesome sounding mess. Really disappointed.
Horrible writing, boring stories, really bad game design with the path actions. You go from town to town where you end up beating up everyone and stealing from them. That's the whole extent of this system. Well, except you have a kind priestess with you who stays silent while you go on a rampage in every town.

Also the way the game works is you arrive at a town, talk to everyone, use your path actions, go into a dungeon and defeat a boss. Then you go out of town, come to a crossing, and go to the next town. If you want to see all character stories, you do this 32 times. There is no difference in how these stories play out, it's atrocious copy and paste design.

Good points are graphics, sound design, music and mostly battles.

    Everything else is flawed.

JRPGs have really gone down the drain since the demise of Squaresoft. Octopath traveler tries to revive them by divorcing the genre with all the changes and quality of life that have happened over the past 2 decades. What is ultimately presented is a pretty sharp, decent, game. But the problem with JRPGs isn't that they changed, its that they changed in a negative way. Octopath Traveler doesn't address any of the problems JRPGs have, it doesn't borrow game design from new masterpieces. Its a very uninspired game in terms of design, and also falls short of the old JRPG masterpieces such as Chrono Trigger and FF7 in the music, storytelling, and characters aspect.

    Furthermore, its always overpriced.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had a long journey with this game. Originally attracted by the art style and traditional turn based battle, I played the demo and quickly bought the game. I went through and got all the characters first. Each character had 4 chapters, and I completed one of my characters Chapter 2s. The boss battle was incredibly challenging and took a really long time. I was so burnt out that I stopped playing the game. About two years later, I was looking for a good RPG to play, I picked the game back up rather than finding a new game. I kind of figured some things out where the game got a little easier. I went through and completed all the Chapter 2s. I got burnt out again. I stopped for a week and then picked it back up. I was half way done with the game and I didn’t want all the time spent to be for nothing. I finished all the Chapter 3s and the stories got quite a bit more interesting. I then went through and finished all the Chapter 4s, but my starting character (Cyrus) was so OP by that point, it was mostly just going through the motions and completing the chapters. Most of the challenge was gone. I would say 6/8 of the stories were interesting. I liked powering my characters up with new weapons and equipment. The most challenging and rewarding bosses to defeat were the four subjob bosses. They took several attempts each and really made me change the way I had been using the characters abilities. Ultimately what soured me on the game was the postgame “true” final boss. I know that a few characters endings allude to the final boss/location, but I had no idea of where it was (well I knew where it was but not where that was on the map). I finally looked it up online and found out that you have to do some side story to get there. The side stories in this game are not done in a way that motivates you to do them; they’re far too ambiguous. Expand

Octopath Traveler is bolstered by a strong soundtrack coupled with amazing visuals. If you enjoy older JRPG's then this game should be right up your alley. The 2D-HD style is phenomenal and seems like a great way to remaster older games.

As others have noted, there is no real overarching plot, but 8 separate stories. This did not bother me and kept the game refreshing during its long run time.

i am really wondering how this game came about. Did Nintendo just wake up and say " lets make a RPG that looks like crap in 2018" "lets make it look like an SNES game on a system that has more power then it shows. This crap would not fly on a PS4 or PS5. I love Nintendo more then anything but lets make games play and look good like they have hundreds of times.

Full voice-acting, more in game artwork (if the game was themed around those fantastic drawings, imagine how much better this game would be), portrait models and a more thought out and interesting stories. Also it's extremely confusing on what to do - I feel like the game has no main quests/story. Why am I picking up other travellers and seeing their prologue too when I can just do that picking them at the start? If I was picking them up, why can't there be any unique relations/dialogue things. Many QOL improvements needed as well - random combat events are annoying af and makes me want to stop playing - I think cut it out entirely or maybe in game monster sprites - boost the exp rate/hp which would make the long waiting in combat more bearable.

No fim, as qualidades acabam compensando a experiência.

The presentation was just amazing. They develop “HD-2D” graphics. The landscapes and character design are just unique and refreshing to the eye. You can feel the throwback of old school JRPGs with the updated aesthetic. You’ll just be amaze on how they change and improve the pixel graphics.

The Battle system on the other hand feels familiar with a twist. It still incorporates the turn base system in the past but with the added Boosts system. The player has to choose the timing when to spend the Boosts points so that they can deal “massive damage.” It is a lot of damage when timed correctly. It’s simple concept but refreshing in the same time.

Music was god sent. Composer ,Yasunori Nishiki, created such an incredible sound track. The sound track was probably one of the best sound tracks I’ve ever heard. People should play the game with the music alone. Nishiki reminded me of Nobuo Uematsu when he created the music for Final Fantasy. The music was just timeless and legendary. Please listen to it, you’ll not be disappointed. You can find the whole soundtrack at spotify and youtube.

They story of Octopath individually was great. People can really feel the the trials and tribulation per character and how they face and grew from it. The overall story of as a group needs a little work BUT all was answered with the post game content. I was shock how all of it tied up in the end.

Overall Octopath was such breath of fresh air this generation and it didn’t disappoint. If you’re looking for a JRPG to play just try Octopath.

This game; geez, where to start. It is annoying as all get up. Too many random battles, the level design is terrible with the '3d', and the minimap and world map are useless for navigating around the huge world. Literally, you can only accidently stumble upon things and all the while fighting unending hordes of weak monsters. Very disappointed..............

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Octopath Traveler was overall a wonderful adventure, a real travel through a wonderful artistic design and accompanied by an equally wonderful OST.

Where to start ? Let me first say it took me 165 hours to finish the game 100%, and to be honest, my opinion on the game varied quite a lot along all these hours. In the first few hours, you select your first character, discover the graphical style of the game and the gameplay with a lot of pleasure. Artistically, and although a bit more efforts could have been done on some sprites, the game just looks beautiful. It's a pleasure to go through the wide variety of landscapes. The turn-based combats are simple but offer their dose of complexity when you start fighting stronger bosses.
After a few hours, once you have unlocked a few more characters, this is where you can start analyzing this game more closely, and unfortunately see the few flaws of Octopath Traveler. Story is a core element of the game with an overwhelming amount of dialogues and, as I will repeat later, the end of the story completely justify spending so much time going through the game. But honestly, some characters have much more interesting lore and stories than others. Without spoiling, the background story of Alfyn, for example, does not seem to be leading anywhere and have any structure, and even the bit of suspense that is created is solved by a scenaristic shortcut. In contrast, the stories of Olberic and Primrose are much more interesting. This creates, in the early/mid-game, an asymmetry in the expectations from each storyline.
The second core problem of Octopath Traveler, which I must say got me quite bored when I reached about 50/60 hours of play, is that the structure of almost the chapters in the game (except a few ones) is exactly the same: you arrive in town with an intrigue ongoing, you progress through a few dialogues giving the context, you go a little further using the special talent of your character, and this leads you to a dungeon. Dungeons are also all the same in their structure: an open area where foes spawn randomly, and a few chests to open, until you reach the boss of the chapter. Once the boss is defeated, the chapter concludes with another few dialogues, setting up the stage for the next chapter. You can explore the vast world and find secret areas, but these will also always have the same structure, so much that after some time you can start predicting where to find secret bonuses/solutions to secondary quests without thinking too much.

If you are a player in the middle of the game, I would however suggest to keep going. Why ? Because weirdly enough, for me the real fun started after about 100 hours of play. Some stories keep being uninteresting, but some are concluded very nicely, although none of them has a very surprising ending. But after all 8 storylines are finished, the game is actually not completely finished... and I don't want to spoil from there on, but this is when you start to explore more, discover improvements to your fighting skills, and with perseverance you can reach the real end of the game... I can't say much about it, but let me just say that even a completely boring storyline like Alfyn's is somehow rehabilitated by the glorious ending. It was crazy how the end of the game completely changed my way of seeing the game, and even made me want to play it over once more.

To complement this review, I must insist and say again that the OST is just divine... The musics keep playing in my head every day since I finished the game. Most of them give a feeling of melancholy, harmony or peace. Some relax you, some give a sad or epic background to the story. A brilliant and poetic piece of art.

Octopath Traveler says its name: it's a real travel through thousands of beautiful landscapes, stories that stutter a little in midgame but come all together in a glorious ending, a simple but efficient turn-based gameplay, all of this glorified by amazing OST. A game that I will not forget.

On the surface, the art and especially the music are excellent. However, these only serve to deceive the player into thinking they're playing a quality product. Everything about Octopath Traveler is a dreadful chore, from the story to the gameplay.

JRPGs are a genre where a good story is especially important, and the story in Octopath is not only inane and dull, it's also like pulling teeth to experience. The pacing of cutscenes is ground to a halt by every one of the thousands of text boxes ending with a seconds-long pause of empty space that drives you slowly but gradually insane.
Octopath sells itself on its "unique" story with 8 characters and their separate paths converging, and not only did this game not do it first (Dragon Quest 4 would like a word) it also does it horribly. The characters and their stories all exist in barely-breached bubbles, with only a tiny percentage of time and effort set aside for them to ever talk to each other. Compared to a series like Tales or the Bravely games, with so much care given to the characters' relations to each other, the result is just embarrassing.

A poor story and characters could be forgiven for fun gameplay, but Octopath doesn't even have that. The brave-and-elemental-weakness-and-job-class system is novel and interesting at first, but only gets worse as more moving parts are piled upon it. By the time you get all your party members, the battle system exists in a perfect Hell where it's too complex to be mindless fun, but too tedious to be at all engaging. The result is a game where I dreaded each encounter more than those of most Horror games I've played.

Octopath is a game that parades itself as being much more as it is, and it's insulting to both the player and the better games that came before it. There are few games that match the sheer hatred and unfun that I felt while trying to suffer through this dump of an experience.

However, as I went around and collected more characters, I felt like the same formula was repeating and it was breaking the logical progression of each story lines. I know the game reminds you of the state of each storyline at the beginning or each chapter, but it wasn't quite enough to put me back in the mindset. I also felt very disconnected with the kind of language that is used in the narration and between the characters in some of the stories. Each story also feels like a visual novel in a way since there is nothing to really do except to go to the green mark on the map after each cutscene to get to the next. I have played rather casually and I am at around 50 hours into the game. It currently feels a bit like a grind to push and finish the game, and I think I will stop once I finish 4 of the stories.

That aside, I enjoy the combat system. At this point in the game it is probably the only thing I still enjoy. I also appreciate how the side quests let you figure out what you need to do, but many of them are incredibly hard to figure out. In that sense, I feel like there is such a large contrast between the side quests and the story quests that it is almost a bad thing. I would've personally preferred something more in the middle.

Fantastic music, sound track is the best of the game. Each character has his own music theme, maybe too melancholic but is a 10/10.

The plot is too simple and linear, cliche characters, there is no evolution in them over time. Too Manichean, evil and good well separated. A noble girl becomes a prostitute seeking for vengeance for no reason, instead of using her money and inheritance for it. Anyways narrative is ok, it is ok even if it is full of topics and empty of plot twists. It is a game for kids, not a book. Hire a Jewish screenwriter to review it before starting though, Square Enix 6/10.

Gameplay is horrible, it is a typical 90's RPG game, but dynamics are too slow.

They made a weakness point counter system which stuns and weakens enemies when they came to 0. But there are not any strategic but this in the game. In addition, they made an initiative point system, these points increase if you do not use them, and they boost your skills and attacks.

Both systems combined make combat so tedious as you have to wait turns taking enemies weaknesses points as you wait to your initiative points to increase for making massive damage.

Boss fights long the same as common fights. And skills are limited, attack, heal, low, and increase defense and attack. Enemies can blind, sleep, etc. you but it is very limited to you to do these things. You have very powerful ultimate skills at your disposal that end a combat after gaining some initiative points.

These long fights appears each two steps on map, so you can't walk at all, unless you have a mage on team who provides of an extension walking longitude before fighting. Game is hardly bearable even with this mage's skill, it is unplayable if u don't have this.

You do not need to properly manage your items, you are full of healing things and other things, you will never run out of them, even resurrection items.

There is not any puzzle on map, just walking, taking treasure chests (some are hidden by 2D vision perspective) and fighting.

The interaction of the NPCs is the 90's RPGs and they added that, depending of which character is in your team, you can steal or trade items with them, even fight a duel or investigate them, which improves skills or shows you the positions of hidden items, which is a great thing, but the plot is linear so when you get to a village you just examine, steal or trade with everyone to get new items and upgrade skills, you can also have an NPC character following you and help you in battles, you cannot control them .

You cannot make any decision, there are not dialogues which spread a list of answers, plot is linear.
    3/10

Talking about graphics, all goods things and effects came from Unreal Engine basics, so they didn’t have to work so much on it, they made low quality sprites for characters, and cartoon textures for the 3D maps and a static camera angle imitating 90's RPG quality, Low-cost graphics which did not provide budget for extending other game features.2/10

In conclusion this game is just an experimental game made by Square Enix for commercial researches.
Using a very portable graphic engine, great music, cute story, bad game development and cheap graphics budget. 4/10

The reality I mean under 9.0 just breaks my heart into piece. I asked to myself times whether I am stubborn because of the nostalgia of Classic RPG. So I just went to listen to the For redemption + Decisive I from the OST, and it had been already worthy to get 9.0 at least.

The lack of interconnecting stories and boring dungeons are already well covered as is the great music and graphics. I have some objective criticisms beyond that however. The USP of this game is that you can make a party of any 4 from 8 characters, but that is not true. If you don't take Therion there is a chest in each dungeon you cannot unlock so you cannot experience the full game without him in every dungeon and some towns. Why is the main plot hidden at the end of the game? I know loads of old JRPGs that hide import stuff - omega dungeon in ffx and the emeralda dungeon in xenogears for example - but it sucked then, too. I don't get why you would almost force people to read a walk through to find the end of the game. The difficulty curve is very frustrating throughout, not so bad most people will get bored and quit like bravely default, as when stuck in octopath there is generally not too much time lost in abandoning a quest and switching to another. It is still objectively frustrating however when a boss is way harder than you had a hint of (Therions quest is probably the worst for this.) But the worst annoyance is the final dungeon. Fight the same sprites you have seen before, 8 bosses one after another, then get massacred by the final boss. I cannot be bothered to try a third time because I could play a better game in the time it will take to grind out another 5-10 levels and fight the same bosses over again to try a different strategy.

I wanted to love it but it was just bad. Story was a mess, combat wasn't interesting and you couldn't take 2 steps between random encounters that take far too long to deal with. The graphics and sound weren't bad for what they aimed for but still could've been better, especially at full price.

When i picked this title up, it was my sole inspiration to purchase a nintendo switch. The draw was its turn based rpg of old like final fantasy series from snes . The game has depth mechanics are good . Difficultly is there. I get a lil frustrated but I'm a casual player. Graphics are lit gameplay is smooth story good but jumps about a bit at least i get lost. Ost maravillosa

Octopath Traveler is a must play RPG on the Nintendo Switch. Featuring a 2D art style that feels reminiscent of the SNES days the game follows the story of eight protagonists that eventually all cross paths. The story isn’t the games strongest suit, hence the sub 10 rating. As for the better qualities, where to start. The soundtrack is one of the catchiest and fits the battles perfectly, I still find myself listening to it years after playing the game. The turn based combat system is also exceptional, moving the genre forward with a unique attack option, having the ability to save battle points to use certain skills or perform multiple attacks, not seen in other games. One of the best modern RPGs I've ever played. A complete experience with all the story and characters :)

The job system is excellent but it isn't very well supported by the story, which lacks cohesion and forward momentum.

It is similar to the Korean RPG game 'Nexus, the Kingdom of the Winds'.
The characters and graphics are very similar. It was fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is truly a gem that hearkens back to 90s nostalgia in JRPGs with modern quality of life updates. The sprite art is fantastic, the backgrounds are stunningly beautiful for a game of this type, and most of all, the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful and emotional. All the characters story lines are very well written, and you begin to feel a connection to them early on as they struggle with their pasts and present, and wanting to better themselves. There is a bit of lack of crossover in the main story lines, but that doesn't affect it too much in my own opinion, since you have free reign on choosing where to go and who to recruit and use in your party.

The gameplay mechanics play much like other turn based JRPGs of the time with a fresh addition to the battle system, which while combined with other parts you discover later in the game, lead to interesting and fun strategies. My only gripe is there is a need for a bit of grind in some areas, but that's to be expected of a JRPG.

    Spoilers ahead;

Once you finish the main game you're able to take on Galdera, a secret boss, after completing a seemingly innocuous side quest involving a seemingly unimportant character. It ties together all the story lines in a very satisfying way, making you think about how many generation it took to set in motion all the events that affected the 8 characters lives.

Unfortunately, the biggest flaw with this game is the fact that you're not playing 1 overaching story with 8 contributing paths, but 8 parallel paths that really don't have much to do with each other and literally no interaction between the characters. You're not playing with a party of adventurers so much as a group of strangers silently hanging out together. In a game that gets half of its merit from story alone, this is a bit of a failure. The characters by themselves are fairly interesting with decent stories to them, but that just makes the lack of connection all the more frustrating.

However, If you're looking for old school JRPG, that's what you're getting. But beware, there have been A LOT of "quality of life" upgrades RPGs have gained over the years that this game deliberately leaves out, to be more like the older games. Fights are very repetitive, menus are needlessly complex, the story is slow, and you're going to have to grind A LOT. If you're looking for all of that, which is what us older folks knew growing up, you'll be pleased. If you're a youngin' whipper snapper, this probably isn't the game for you. As an adult that grew up on these games with relatively little free time now, I'm torn. I want to like this, but I don't want to devote my life to it and the failing of the story to unite these individually interesting characters really ruins the momentum I had to play it. Buy at your own risk.

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
