    Nice! This game is something quite unique and a real selling point for the Switch this summer. It looks and sounds fantastic and even though I’ve only played 5 hours I feel compelled to carrying on with this. I’m not really big on JRPGs but the nostalgia and style of this game will appeal to all, not just the 16bit generations.

    While I haven't finished the game quite yet, I already found much appreciation for what Octopath Traveler has done. The combat system is a lot of fun, I like how they've put a new spin on the classic turn-based combat which we see in JRPGs most of the time. BPs and vulnerabilities playing key role in this game, it keeps the fights quite fresh and the repetetiveness kicks in much later. All in all, it's a perfect game for what it is... a JRPG for Switch (which I preferably use as a handheld, I haven't even unpacked the dock yet) and damn good at that.

    Soundtrack is also incredibly good!

    A beautiful game! Thanks Square for give us a retro J-rpg in 2018. It's a great story and good characters and these things, along with the music, was the keys that convinced me that this game was a master piece.

    If you're looking for a good old JRPG that hits all the right spots yet also tries something new (eight unique stories with not a lot of intertwining) then this is your game. It looks absolutely beautiful, has a very fun and in-depth turn based combat system and will bring you right back to the good old Chrono Trigger/FFVI/etc. days.

    Superb English voice overs as well by the way!

    I normally do not write reviews, but Octopath Traveler is simply so good that I have to say it is my Game of the Year for the Nintendo Switch!

    The only negative is the story, which I must admit that I skip. I am not really a big fan of story, the gameplay is what makes this game great for me.

    Beautiful to look at beautiful to listen to, Octopath Traveler is something special on the Switch. Originally when I heard that the stories don't converge into one giant story I was a little apprehensive about this title but took the plunge anyways - and I am so happy I did. AMAZING game! Battles are great, exploration is nice and this really does the older SNES RPGs I grew up with justice.

    My favorite switch game right now, it's pretty much 8 jrpg games in one! Normally I don't even follow the story and just skip all text and cutscenes but these stories got me hooked from the start. Furthermore the game has awesome combat, art ( not graphics, ART ) and music. Most people can easily get 100+ hours out of this game!

    The game has the charm of the jrpgs we come to love over the flow of time, but does it in a way that is new and fresh. Combine this with a great turnebased battle systeem, a breathing world and a really amazing artstyle and what we have then is a new classic the that can be called in the same breath as FF6, Chrono trigger , FF7,8,9 and lots of other classics. This game is a gem, don't believe those ignorent people that don't understand what makes a classical magical jrpg! Otherwise going from one story to the next in the chapters very little grinding.... Most people are just frankly weak or lack of understanding of how turnbase games works..

    Octopath Travelers is an amazing game not just because it’s a turn-base retro style but simply the story, charming characters, and music!! I played the 3hr Demo and I was sold on the game and preorder the Collectors editions because it’s truly an awesome game! I wanted to support developers that can still focus on Story, character development and music as an integral part in RPG games.

    Excellent game. More than a throwback to older RPGs. I'm taking my time to level up all of the characters simultaneously and the only "grinding" has been by treating this as an rpg and not using the fast travel system very much, so it doesn't feel like grinding. The battle system is well thought out. I cared about the characters and the stories are well designed.

    First thing I have to address the negative comments. Like any game most just seem to be haters and want to see the game crash and burn for no apparent reason, so most of the negative 0 and 1 rating comments seem out of place and unnecessary. Example: Game has bad graphics for today's standards of games in 2018. --- PLEASE READ: Please do not give this game a 0 rating if you like the music but do not like the game, 0 rating is if you hate absolutely everything in a game, liking the music or something in the game can easily bump it up a point or few, personally the music and exploration makes up 50% of this game I find, so that's an easy 5 points, but everyone's observations are different. Also, using poor/oudated GRAPHICs is a poor reason to automatically give the game a 0, otherwise undertale and all indie games released after 2000 should also receive 0 scores. At least be fair and give more reasons in a review on why you feel it deserves that 0 or 1 score.

    The graphics and game art style should not surprise anyone who has seen anything about this game, whether it be a trailer or the demo or pictures/videos on social media or even by looking at the back of the box before purchasing the game. The appeal for this game is for nostalgia sake as a throwback to JRPGs from the 90s and some from the early 2000s. This is no different from praise given to indie games with its 16 bit sprites, like Undertale comes to mind and how well received it was for its simple retro graphics.

    With old style graphics, there's an element of charm and something extra special in the art style, especially in the backgrounds and how beautifully designed they are.

    As for the complaints of fight after fight after fight, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. The maps for each zone is a little smaller than your typical RPG, so it's to be expected to have more battles and that's also a nostalgic part of older JRPGs where random encounters frustrating us was always a thing. But the battles have their own big charm in this game and it's quite a unique battle system with certain power and weapon weaknesses to break the foe and then how you can boost to use an attack multiple times for more damage. Something similar to the Bravely games, from the same creators who worked on this game.

    I like the whole separate character paths and how you can pick and choose which one you want to start and then travel to each one and explore their story, then the other greater element and mechanic is how each character has their own field ability to interact with the world and NPCs.

    I've played the game for 10 hours and I'm onto my fourth character, but just yesterday I spent a while just in one city using the character's abilities on each NPC when I got my extra new character, it made revisiting a town worthwhile to interact with each one and that new character specific field ability. Then of course you have your side quests and levelling/equipment system with everything JRPG fans love, not to mention an amazing soundtrack.

    I think for a big JRPG fan like myself, especially a fan of older JRPGs, since I grew up with the SNES and PS1/PS2 JRPGs as a kid and teenager, this type of JRPG even in this day and age is a dream-type of JRPG to be made today. It's well worth the purchase.

    Absolutely loved the game. It instantly brought me back to the sorrow-free days of my childhood I spent with my beloved Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Zelda, Lufia, etc. without feeling too old-school or boring. It's a bit sad the story (telling) does not change depending of who has joined your party but this nitpicking.

    Despite his look this game is actually doing something quite particular in it's structure, 8 differents heroes with different destiny, you can pick any, build the team you want, choose when you want to advance in a story, you can go anywhere in the map.

    The music is absolutely fantastic, up there with persona and nier easily.
    The game is stacked with content, expect 50 hours for the main game, and 80-100 for a completionist run.
    The difficulty is perfect in my opinion, hard enough so you actually use strategies, but not too hard so you get frustrated.
    The sidequest are very good, basically the npc tells you a problem or something vague and you have to figure it out, there is no specific indication on how to do it, but if you pay attention to dialogue and understand the world you will figure it out! It's much better than all those JRPG with giant Arrow, that tell you to kill 10 birds or something like that.

    The only potential negative is the quality of the dialogue which is not always very engaging with all the stories.

    Octopath Traveler does exactly what's promised. It delivers a full old-school JRPG experience while adding a few modern touches, for someone who is too young to have ever played a SNES JRPG, I find this game incredible.You can start with any of the eight characters and your journey continues from there.

    The battle system itself is pretty straightforward, it's a traditional turn-based type in which you have to strategize in order to win. The fighters are able to boost their attacks in order to do more damage and strike multiple times, the more turns you get, the more you can boost your attacks. Every enemy (bosses included) has a weakness and you can attack the enemy weakness, if you have a fighter that wields whatever the opponent is weak to. Strike their weaknesses enough times and the enemy will 'break', lose their turn, and be at your mercy. This is the perfect chance to boost your fighter to the max and open up a COWA.

    If you ever feel like your fighter isn't packing enough punch, there is a job system. By entering shrines, you can acquire second jobs for your characters. Your character will have their primary job and have the abilities of the second job. These make for very interesting combination, combine the right jobs and you'll have an extremely powerful party. My personal favorite is the warrior+scholar, I combined that and Olberic became a powerful Battlemage (unofficial term).

    The characters have their own distinct personalities, and if you're wondering...yes, they do interact with each other! It's not just one character walking up to another and asking to join the party, the characters have actual conversations with each other. I just witnessed Olberic and Cyrus having a conversation about the difference of arena fighting as noble competition and a bloodsport. The characters start to have conversations with each other once you reach the Chapter 2 area. They're Heart-to-Hearts from Xenoblade, short, yet interesting.

    The stories of the travelers do not converge. No they don't end up fighting one big baddie in the end, that may disappoint some gamers, but for those who have the patience there is lore at the end of the game that explains how all the stories are connected in a way. The individual stories of the characters may seem a little cliche to some, but they're overall interesting and make you want to continue. However, because of strong enemies, you may have to level up a bit before continuing your journey.

    All that being said, no game is without its flaws. My only problem with this game is how grindy it can be it times. You'll have to do a lot of fighting to get gold for your weapons and armor, but that's with every JRPG so I shouldn't complain about that one. The one thing I will say is the structure of the game can be a bit of a drag for players who want to focus on one individual story at a time.

    For example. I started with Olberic, and I wanted to continue his story but the area in which his next chapter takes place has many high leveled enemies that can defeat my party in a few turns. In order to prepare for that, I went and gathered the remaining 7 travelers to increase my level. While the introductory tales of the other travelers are interesting, I had to wait before I continued Olberic's story. Pay close attention to the reccomended level on the map!

    All in all, Octopath Traveler may have one or two gripes that can make the experience a bit less pleasant than expected, but its goods greatly outweigh the bads. Octopath allows you to make your own journey and do crazy things, this is truly a fantastic JRPG and I hope to see more turn-based titles in the future. There's also a good amount of post-game content. That's why I'm giving this game a 10/10.

The writing and voice acting (when it shows up) is very good. The sound track is really one of the best sound tracks of the year.

    And damn, this combat system and character mechanics are so deeply layered and synergistic. This is by far one of the best JRPG battle systems ever. I mean, even 1-on-1 battles at the start of the game are interesting and exciting, and have some strategy to them. How many JRPGs can say that? You're never going to just be pressing A.

    The game is also really challenging as well. Octopath Traveler presents us with some of the BEST JRPG boss battles I've played in god knows how long! Even bosses 3-4 hours into the game are seriously epic in size and strategy to defeat them.

    And can you believe the game is open-world with tons of exploration and non-linear story progression? And did you know the game is 100 hours long?

    Overall, while so many things are the same and polished to a tee, much of the game is very different from JRPGs too, and that's a great thing - it feels modern and not just a remake of the days of yore on your SNES. Yes, the stories of the 8 characters might not tie into a whole, but that's okay - does every RPG have to have the same formula? Octopath Traveler had a vision, and it accomplishes what it set out to do perfectly. It's different, and different is good.

    This is easily going to end up somewhere in my top 10 games of the year. The game is awesome. And did I mention the soundtrack was the best this year? Seriously, that alone is a reason to play the game! It's that good!

The fighting systems is great and you need to play with strategy. The graphics don't bother me, but it could be better in big TVs. The music is one of the best aspects and also the art details in each town, make everything alive.

    I don't like JRPG normally, they tend to stretch out and the format I just don't like. And I hate retro games in 8/16 bit style. I didn't like Persona 5 or Shovel Knight for instance. But this... And I LOVE that the stories doesn't connect, the characters still interact, but there isn't as much connection and therefore I can take one story at a time. And I absolutely love that! Wish more games could do that. To me this is a 10/10 so far, and I hope other game developers take after these guys. If you're hesitant since you're normally not into JRPG, I'd say this one is by far your best bet. Expand

Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is probably my favorite switch game. I did not expect this game to be such a blast. I loved the stories, the side quests, and bosses. A lot of people complained that this game was repetitive, but I would disagree. Each boss brings in a mechanic, and the towns are all unique. Each story seems to be completely unrelated at first, but in truth they are all connected by the (Spoilers) final dungeon. Its funny how this game came to be the best game I've ever played in my life, beating other switch titles such as Super Mario Odyssey and others by several miles. Expand

I have no idea how someone can give a negative review of it. I played so many JRPG in my lifetime that I have a gigantic list to compare this game too. In a nutshell, Octopath Traveler is JRPG at its finest.
    - Just badass graphics. This game is made in the Unreal Engine and it just an eye feast;
    - Good characters. I can see how unique they are. The English voice actors are also pretty good;
    - Awesome individual stories, but you will see some problems here because the 8 stories do not truly connect. However, this does not cast any shadows in the whole experience. Actually, some people think this is bad, I don't. Here is why: This is one of the things that make Octopath unique. We are so used to see the "group of people that join forces to save the world" that we think it HAS to happen. It doesn't. You follow their individual stories and they are satisfying as a converging one;
    - Marvelous soundtrack. The soundtrack is perfectly chosen for each moment and it just carries you with all scenes;
    - Fun, addictive, awesome and perfect turn-based combat. If you played Bravely Default, you will see some similarities with some aspects of the combat. It is fast, but not too fast, it's beautiful, and each class is unique and badass.
    - Some people say that the characters do not interact: lies. They do interact a lot, but you need to trigger the conversation with the + button. Their dialogs are pretty good for this type of JRPG also.

    I truly have no complaints about this game. The individual stories are awesome and way more interesting that they look like when you start them. They have a proportional number of plot twists and they are filled with philosophical questions and good character motivations. They are emotional and exciting to finish. Whoever reads this, if you are a fan of JRPGs, or turn-based RPG, or phantasy games, this HAS to be on your list of games.

    No this is not the perfect game, but it is my favorite game in a very long time (since FFIX to be exact), there are issues, but the issues are minute compared

    Here's hoping that Square keeps developing in this direction and abandons the directionless, Ripoff-features-from-other-games form that Final Fantasy has taken as of late.

    Played about 40 hours in this game as of now and it’s a really good game. The characters, individual stories and gameplay is really well done. The graphics reminds me good snes rpg with a touch of more actual graphic effects makes a good mix. A must have for RPG fans

    200 hours in, still loving it.
    Pros: For me, the battle system itself worths 9/10, plus 10/10 wonderful music. More importantly, call me nostalgic or whatever, this art style just killing it.
    Cons: Have to admit that the stories aren't the best among jrpgs, but personally, I don't really mind.

    It is so a good game! You cannot believe. When I saw this , I thought: "What a dump game!"
    But then I played the Demo and it was so: mhhh.

    My Tip: play the Demo and then choose: buy it or not

    Ignore people who say there is no interaction between the characters, about 5-7 hours in they talk a lot and they begin to get to know each other and for bonds

    Octopath Traveler is a beautiful game that somehow never gets tired. It’s also a game that bravely makes the story all about those characters, with the world, harsh as it can be, almost secondary to the insular unit and their individual arcs. That sheer ambition is all the more impressive because Octopath Traveller uses sprites. Little 2D characters made up of even littler squares. People need to play this game if only to realise that not everything spectacular needs to be photo-real. Expand

    While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

    You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

    Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
