Nova-111 is quite a treat of an indie and I'm happy that it's finally available for Switch. Exploring its alien worlds as you outsmart all sorts of tricky foes and progress past seemingly impossible situations makes for some rewarding Mystery Dungeon-like gameplay.

Nova-111 is a fun turn-based puzzle game that looks super cute and works your brain but can feel slow and repetitive after a while.

At its core, Nova-111 is a strategy adventure game about a small ship, its amusing guide, and the pair's mission to fix space-time. Players can find secrets hidden behind suspicious rocks to get upgrades and rescue their fellow scientists in each area. There are a few minor issues that players may face when trying to move quickly in certain levels, but there aren't any major problems with gameplay. Nova-111 is short but fun to play, and it offers some difficult puzzles for players to solve.

Melding real-time and turn-based mechanics cannot be easy, but Nova-111 does it deftly, with its gameplay being the top priority. Unfortunately, this interactive puzzle game has no story or substance to make it feel like more than a collection of mini-games. The game itself is a blast to play in handy bite sized chunks, and seeing the new ways puzzles, enemies, and mechanics all combine together can be quite fun. The game’s relatively short length also adds to its grab-and-go nature. With puzzles that don’t feel too punishing, it’s easy to jump in and feel rewarded for solving each well-crafted and thoughtful area.

Finding a space that’s less onerous than something like a tactical combat sim, but elevating the challenge beyond your typical light and breezy strategy title, depending on your level of experience and confidence you may get pretty deep before things get messy for you but I’d wager most people out there will feel the sting of a challenge at some point as complexity continues to get piled on the further you go. Where, when, and how you move in relation to what’s around you, and making the proper use of the weapons and abilities you have available, is vital to your success and the further you go the more even small mistakes or hesitations can cost you. Nova-111 may not be without its flaws, but if you’re looking for a mix of some action and strategy that doesn’t carry a terribly high cost this is well worth your consideration.
