The game could be great. But the default controls are terrible. You can remap them at least. But without voices and no tap jump. The game goes completely against your smash muscle memory. This causes lots of frustration. A update to add tap jump would make it far more playable.

Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl, beyond name recognition, is a lackluster and same-y feeling game. 90% of the cast has the same basic up-down combo tree, and hitboxes are often confusingly large or feel inconsistent to the average player. The "rollback netcode" is much worse than in other plat fighters and other fighting games in particular, even Brawlhalla, a free game. Fighting anyone with a moderately bad connection becomes a battle of "Animations are starting and stopping with absolutely no warning" and even starts stuttering at a ping range of 40-80. If you have a ping above 30, or mildly inconsistent, this game starts suffering really bad in the online department. Apart from the online department, the game also suffers, as it offers no single-player content outside of a classic mode and a training mode, in which the Brawlhalla training mode has it beat. Hitboxes are janky and quite large, e.g. Catdog's neutral heavy attack, which hits behind, above, and in front. Normals aren't varied enough to really make a huge difference in combo games, as with the exception of maybe 2 characters they all have the same juggling combos. Getting stuck in a combo is literally an un-skippable cutscene. Hitstun is long and the tumbling mechanics feel extremely random whether or not they go off. On top of that, move priorities are strange and feel like the devs rolled a dice and decided which one had a higher priority. I hate comparing random platform fighters to each other, but the priorities in Brawlhalla actually make sense and clashes don't feel nearly as random. Balance was not even considered once in the making of this game. Characters seem to have the same "character design" of "throw **** at the wall and see what sticks." Characters will have strangely fast moves. While I appreciate a more aggressive game, this game just feels genuinely awful in some regards. Funny how people criticize Brawlhalla for being a monotonous, same-y game, and then turn around and praise the game where every character has the exact same combo tree (which is worse than having characters have the same weapons, as sig kits shake up how you use the attacks.) The only meaningful changes that anyone have are in their specials, in which the only difference is how god-awful their projectile is (save Zim and Patrick.) The character designs are lazy, with reused animations all over the place. Aang, who should be one of the most unique characters, feels like a generic fast kung fu kid with a bo staff. Characters where they try to shake up the game end up looking like they forgot some key thing to make them fun to fight against, like Toph's infinite platforms at the top of the screen, which, coupled with the lack of a magnifier bubble, and her obnoxious rocks from above, make for a infuriatingly overlooked strategy.

TL;DR I did not enjoy this game much. It felt rushed in all senses of the word, including the lack of good music and voice acting. A lot of this game feels bog-standard and lazy. Something that could have changed up the platform fighter scene, in my opinion, has completely fallen on its face due to a turbulent release.

In the run up to release, we've seen countless influencers hyping this game. We've watched their ironic curiosity turn to real interest, and then to hope that this game, yes this licensed Nickelodeon fighting game, could be the real deal Smash Killer.

Check the YouTube comments of any review about this game and you'll have choruses of adherents parroting a few points:

    1) They didn't have a big budget!
    2) The Devs love you, and this game, and are therefore immune to criticism.
    3) If this game does well maybe that will motivate Nickelodeon to put more money into it!

All of these of course are said with a straight face while insisting this game will be the new competitive meta for fighting games, and that we should care who is the best at Spongebob vs Powdered Toast Man in a serious, e-sports kind of way while ignoring the fact that the game they received is literally incomplete.

First, look at the character renders - all of these characters live in uncanny valley, as if they've been born from the Rugrats 3D reboot universe and forced to fight against their will for all of eternity as punishment for some egregious sin.

Second, listen to the audio. The music sounds like stock music from the YouTube audio library. Have a spooky character? Let's search "spooky" and use the first result. There's no voice acting at all - literally no spoken word aside from the announcer. Between the grubhub advertisement visuals and the dreadful audio it feels like I'm playing one of those soulless click farm videos that shows up on Facebook.

Third, the roster is awful. There are 20 characters, nearly 50% of which are from 3 franchises. Major Nick franchises have no representation in the game. It's a tragic waste of the Nickelodeon IP.

All of this is to say that this game is not only unfinished, but that what was originally shipped of it was not good.

Do the devs care? Sure, why not. Did they produce a game that's worth $50? No. Will buying as many copies as you can and waiting for Nickelodeon to drop a money bomb on it and make it okay again work? No.

So, Nickelodeon All Star Brawl is a fair game in the end. While it can be fun, there are some flaws that can hold it back but overall, this is a fair smash clone that has potential.

Very boring, not much to do at all. The animations look like something you would see from a n64 game. Half the roster is just a copy and paste from smash. It’s super slow paced and feels like you’re on the moon. No voice acting. The games graphics look like trash (on all consoles). I just don’t see the reason to play this when I could just play smash bros

Overall a quite fast-paced platform fighter that feels very different from others in the genre. Though an overall fun experience, there's quite a lack of polish (especially online) yet an enjoyable experience still. Hopefully future updates will smooth out the rough edges.

I seriously don't recommend this to anyone and I had a feeling it would be bad when I saw the Pre-Order on the Switch was 20% off. You don't put Toph Beifong in a game and not have her make any sassy snarky comments!

That said here are the pros and cons of this game

    Pros:
    -Easy controls
    -Game looks nice

    Cons:
-No Dialogue at all apart from Generic sentences in a text box
-Roster choices were confusing they put April O'Neal, Mikey and Leonardo in the game but left out ---Raphael and Donatello which I found odd not to mention Helga from Hey Arnold was there but not Arnold himself
-Battles are way too quiet I expected some trash talk from the characters (Especially Toph who lives to taunt her opponents)

all in all I give this a 1 out of 10 like I said above I knew this game was gonna suck when they put it 20% off and the game wasn't even out yet

Id imagine if the devs put more time into game content (game modes) the core gameplay woouldn't be as polished and refined as it is. For a game that has likely been in development for less than a year the devs really have put their heart and soul to make the best possible game they can. This game is an amazing Smash-like with great characters, but I really wish there was more casual modes. Competitively it could rival Rivals or even Melee. But for a game about children’s cartoons I would like expect more then just Online quickly and arcade mode for the causals. Also the load times kinda linger.

Nickelodeon All Star Brawl is a game that takes influence from Smash, but is also clearly not trying to be Smash and that is a good thing. The graphics are good. The lack of voice acting is disappointing and for the price, it would be nice if there was more content. There's not a whole lot of single player content at all and no story mode. Could also use more characters for the price, however if it ever goes on sale I would say it's a definite good pick up especially if these are characters you've grown up with. Legend of Korra, AtLA, Danny Phantom, Rugrats, Spongebob, etc are all characters I've grown up with and they are all well represented. I wish there was a Jimmy Neutron rep, a Fairly Odd Parents rep and Jenny Wakeman from My Life as a Teenage Robot would make a wonderful rep as well.

The physics are nice and the game feels well polished. All of the characters feel great to play as and there's a lot of good references for fans of the shows represented. Ultimately, my only real issue with this game is the price. While it is a good game, it feels like it should be about ten dollars cheaper for the amount of content you are getting.

Honestly, though, the voices kinda sound like they tried a little too hard, but they're not awful. The victory background is also kinda...plain, but hopefully they might add something to make it stand out more. I think one of the biggest things the game is missing is final smashes for the characters. Each character has something they can do for a final smash, and I hope the developers add them when they get the chance. I don't care if this game isn't the "Smash killer"; I'm just happy to try it. While it still has some bland parts here and there, I'd still suggest it to anyone who wants something new, even if it is pretty small. Expand

Add some great and out there character picks such as Oblina and Powdered Toast Man, ALONGSIDE some amazing references that show that the devs truly love these shows and you can see why this game is amazing! The game also features rollback netcode, and while it could still use some work, for being developed by one guy, it is impressive so far. It's not just fights, you also have a Sports mode with its own rules as well as a simple arcade mode. Some might find the modes underwhelming, but I always played these kind of games in the main battle mode anyway. Even when we get to the sound design, things are.... Mostly great. Sounds are meaty, as well as cartoony, with a banger of a soundtrack. However, due to budget reasons, again, no voice acting. The devs are aware of this though, and if Nick is able to give the OK and budget for that, I will update this part of the review, but the lack of VA is something that is super hard to overlook. Still, we re-rise in the visuals, with bright, reference filled visuals with some expressive animations that will get you nostalgic. The thing is, if you don’t spend all of your time picking it apart, and if you really love some of these classic Nickelodeon characters, you can still have a reasonably good button-mashing time with it. I think the biggest weaknesses for me are the lack of items to keep the middling fighting from being so easily apparent and the problems with glitchiness I ran into, which can be really aggravating in some specific stages in particular. That said, my daughter, who grew up with many of these characters, still had a blast and laughed as she’d beat me up with random animated characters in their various color-splashed cartoon levels. Depending on the crowd, things like roster depths and long-standing Nintendo lore don’t have as much pull, nostalgia and familiarity can win. For those people, this will likely be a bit of fun, just be realistic about its limitations going in.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a fighting game with platform elements that delivers a simple but fun experience, drawing from Nickelodeon's rich character list, and gives the fans an engaging but accessible fighting system. Its performance needs improvement, though, as fluidity problems become too common, and there could have been a greater effort to go into Nickelodeon's catalogue, especially when it comes to the audio environment. A package of fun action that's mostly directed at Nickelodeon animation fans.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl almost feels as if it was sold on the sheer premise of reviving Melee with Nickelodeon characters. On the fighting end, it mostly succeeds, but due to a lack of polish, cut corners and just a cheap feel, I’m skeptical how long this game can keep your attention. Yes, the sheer hilarity of seeing Patrick Star beat up CatDog is still funny, but I don’t think the lifespan of this game will increase over time. Watching all these fighters silently duke it out makes it feel like we’re watching storyboards for a singular crossover episode. While that may entice you into watching the commercials, the final product just leaves all these popular properties feel compromised.
