One of the most relaxed pokemon games, my favorite part about this game is the interactions you have with the pokemon. For Example: Throwing an apple at a pokemon making it wake up (and sometimes make them angry). Overall 9/10, but I am going to give it a 10/10 to balance out the bots.

Great game! It's really fun when you take great pics and upload em. You'd be surprised how many sweet medals you get! Adding effects to make you're pics look nice takes time, and after you see the results you begin to feel like a true artist!

It has a lot of content to be honest, I'm kinda surprised, I have 20 hours by now and have a lot of things to do. There are a lot of easter eggs. The only let downs for me are music, that is kinda bland, and the fact you can't register a photo per rating (1/2/3/4 stars) of each Pokémon everytime you finish a course, slowing down the progress a lot. It's a solid game, probably not worth U$60,00, but U$40,00 would be a honest price. It's obvious it's a niched game and I wouldn't recommend to anyone. You will like the game if you like the idea of photographing Pokémon (forget your nostalgia, or you will be disappointed) and like the Pokémon lore, since it is accurate with it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the game, the only problem is that I couldn't take Milotic's photo to pass the level, I don't know if it's my skill or a bug. The mechanics of the photo are very easy, but the mechanics of choosing the path is complicated because you must aim and press the A button for a few seconds, risking your character going the other way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many times I have criticized previous Pokémon games for the same problem, so my criteria will be consistent with this one.
That there are only 200 pokémon and little else, considering that there are currently 1000, is a lack of respect for TPCI when it comes to spin-offs.

I don't ask for all the existing pokémon to be there, but at least half would have been something more appropriate, as well as more open areas to explore and have some control where we want to go to take photos.
New Pokémon Snap feels like a short game whose potential was left halfway, in pursuit of making more money with the brand.

It's amazing. There are a lot of courses with different environments and Pokémon. Like in the original game, you have to use certain tools that you get by advancing in the game, to have the Pokémon strike certain poses or interact with each other. Every level has its own leveling mechanic, which changes the Pokémon and behavior of the Pokémon in it, as you make progress. Some levels also come with a nighttime version of the course or different paths you can chosse to take. While ~200 different Pokémon may feel like a small number in comparison with ~900 Pokémom overall, it's more than enough. Because some of them only appear after you solve a puzzle or progress in the game. And even if you have a full Photodex, there's still many different interactions to photograph to get all four stars of a Pokémon in the dex. To give you an idea how long it takes to finish the dex (not 100% it, just get one picture of every Mon): It took me those 15+ hours playtime and I'm on place 100 in the ranking. That means I was one of the faster people to finish the Photodex, despite the time I took to sleep/cook/work.

Anyone that claims the game only has 6 hours of playtime has not even come close to finishing it. Now I could mention a lot of the other mechanics like the well-thought-out "bossfights" or the picture-editor but that would blast the lenght of this review even further. The only negative aspect, which I think is worth mentioning, is that there aren't any evolutions you can trigger, like in the first game. However, that's the only thing I'd really complain about. TL;DR: Amazing game, lots of content, easily more than 15 hours of playtime. Great successor and 9/10.

PS: To everyone mentioning "This game is bad, you can only take pictures.": Try reading a review, instead of writing one before you buy the game.

After two decades of waiting, New Pokemon Snap has proven to be a worthy predecessor to the N64 original. The artstyle and animations are all very well realized. The music is really good. Sometimes the loading screens seem to be a bit janky, and I wish you could keep more pictures. Good game.

I will stay simple with this one. New Pokemon Snap is a game made for the fans of the old game and Pokemon. It doesn't try to revolutionize and doesn't try to appeal to a completely new audience.
Like the tittle says: It's a "new" Pokemon Snap. Nothing more nothing less.
The gameplay more or less is the same as it was before. If you didn't like the old game you also will not like this

The gameplay more or less is the same as it was before. If you didn't like the old game you also will not like this one. It's a slow and relaxing game. There is no real challenge besides finding (or creating) the perfect opportunity for good pictures.

However, the game has a much larger scale than the predecessor. There are more Pokemon to find. Each Pokemon can show different behavior patterns divided into 4 categories. And to complete them you need to shot photos for each category. Every stage can level up. Allowing you to find new Pokemon and other behavior patterns. And there is a mission system that asks you to make "special picture". Some of this pictures can be hard to find. As they only give you hints on what to expect. They also improved the visuals a lot. It's looks quite beautiful.

Overall it's a great game. Not a masterpiece. But it's a perfect sequel to the old game.

I absolutely LOVE New Pokémon Snap! Though I've always been a huge fan of the original (and I was waiting for a sequel for a long time), I never expected it to be this good. My first concern was always going to be the amount of content, but I can tell you: there's a lot of Pokémon and stages to explore! So many in fact, that I think you'll be busy for dozens of hours to see them all.

Now, as simple as the story and the concept of this game is (you just go through environments to take photo's of Pokémon to get them graded) there's actually a whole lot of complexity in triggering all the behaviors. Never before were Pokémon presented to us with so much detail, and the amount of things they can do is very impressive. And just when you think you've seen everything a Pokémon can do, they do something new and exciting again. The sense of discovery in this game is huge.

To fill your 'photodex' you'll need to snap each Pokémon in four different poses/moods. These behaviors are ranked from 1-4 stars, and it's a different puzzle to get to each individual star rank of that Pokémon. You can see it as an NPC with four different quests/puzzles to complete. The in game request board also gives you tips on how to unlock the most difficult ones. With over 200 Pokémon, there's hours upon hours of hunting and puzzle solving to do. You won't be starved for content at all.

Each of the beautifully designed levels is also upgradable. By doing the courses, you earn XP that changes the course. New Pokémon will appear, but you'll also unlock branching paths and 'illumina orbs' for that island/area. The latter can be used to make Pokémon glow, which helps you create beautiful night-time photographs. With more than 20 courses and three skills levels per course to complete, you'll have a lot of ground to cover.

Look, this game is really not for the min/maxing battle-savvy type player that needs constant action in their games, so judging it by those standards is incredibly unfair. This game is for those of us who enjoy chill and laidback experiences like Animal Crossing and Pikmin. If you are a long time Pokémon fan like I am, and love taking pictures of your favorite monsters in beautiful environments (or just someone who loves a good puzzle) this game is for you. Buy this and you won't regret it.

The only downside for me, is, that it only features little over 200 Pokemon, and a lot of Evolution-lines are broken (why is there only the first and third stage for some pokemon?) which leaves a lot of room for DLCs/future releases I'd happily buy

Utterly impossible to "complete" this game in "a few hours," unless you're literally just blitzing through courses and focusing on the extremely minimal story, which is not how you should be approaching a game like Pokemon Snap. I've been having a blast. "Only" 200ish Pokemon appear in this game, a common complaint- but it's a drastic improvement over the 50 or so in the original, and a limited roster is to be expected. Apparently people didn't understand the concept. It's SNAPping pictures of POKEMON. It wasn't advertised as anything else, and it delivers on what it advertised. If y'all don't like the concept, that's your problem. It's a visually beautiful game, true to the original with new twists.

It has the spirit from the original with really good graphics and a ton of little moments to document. Its what they promised and what i expected, a nice, relaxing, photography game, which carryies on the style and mechanics of the original.

The review bomb is probably orquestated by the same people judging a whole game because a tree texture is not good enough, worst timeline.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. New Pokémon Snap is an amazing and refreshing game after the arguable mess that has been the newer Pokémon games. It’s a fun and exciting experience and you never know what you’re gonna find next. Seeing the Pokémon interact is so cool and you always see yourself going “wow” at every new thing you see. The graphics are gorgeous and the animations are great too. Sure the game can be a little grindy but without the grindy aspect it would be very short and you end up getting used to it. Overall New Pokémon Snap is an amazing and refreshing Pokémon game that you should definitely play. Expand

The 0 reviews are wrong. The game is good for what it is. It's a very pretty, chill, relaxing game about taking pictures of Pokemon to earn higher scores, while solving simple puzzles to get the Pokemon to do interesting poses etc. There is no combat or and a fairly basic story, it's about relaxing and photos. It's about an 8 but I'm rating 10 to counter the 0 reviews.

Brilliant update from the N64 original. The Pokémon are bursting with life and personality, and the graphics are outstanding for the Switch (with rare instances of frame rate drops - looking at you, Wailord!) Amazing effects, amazing Pokémon designs and the gameplay really hooked me. It feels grindy at times but then again, you absolutely want to make the best pictures you possibly can because they are going to be so amazing.

After the dissapointment I felt with Sword/Shield this game reinvigorates my love for Pokémon again.

A few nitpicks: Menu's can take some time to navigate, you aren't able to quickly change the current course (you CAN quickly retry it though) the flute could use some more (or better) tunes because it gets annoying. They could have thought of some more creative new items to interact with. If you loved Snap you'll love this more!

I hope it evolves further and further in future editions, but I love how true the game mechanic has stayed to the N64 version. My only concern/ criticism goes to the fact that I had to retake many shots just to complete the side-quests instead of the AI figuring out that I had those shots already. A beautiful, in-depth modernization of a classic game. The main story takes at least 15 hours to finish, with more optional content available after this. To see every pokemon, I imagine another 10 hours at least. Great potential for extra worlds to be added.

The photo rating system could use some tweaking, as sometimes large, out of focus pokemon get higher scores than well taken shots.

Anyway here's a quick honest review from me. The only part that I dislike about this game is how it got the ''switch treatment'' and is being sold as a fully priced game just because Nintendo could, but outside of that, this is an excellent game that is worth getting despite it's price. When they first announced it, I was afraid on how it would be a very short game with maybe 5 hours of gameplay with secrets included, but no, I am many hours in and I feel like I am barely started. So far, every stages I visited have a day and night variant and each of them have many ''levels'' in each variants that upgrades the level adding more pokemons and changing their behaviors, as an example, in the very first level you have pichu and grooky being coutious about you, but the more you progress, the more they will approach you, showing that they grew more confortable with you plus new paths gets unlocked too. Another point that makes it even more replayable is how you get extra missions given to you by the other characters and how every pokemons have a 1, 2, 3 and 4 stars poses with each of them having a bronze to diamond ranking system making you search real hard to find each perfect poses. The only thing I am missing from the original are the real time evolutions, so far i haven't seen any and I don't think there will be any, but with the amount of pokemons having more than tripled with way more replayability on top on an already expanded concept, this game is great and in my most honest opinion, this is a must get despite being ''just an on rail safari shooter'' Expand

It never purported itself to be anything more than a railshooter where you take pics of Pokémon. A lot of the negative reviews seem to be based more on anger over the handling of the main series titles. Whatever. All the Pokémon aren’t in this game and complaining about that won’t get more of them added to Galar either. TL; DR: Realistically, this game is probably a 7.5 or 8. Some of the textures are a let down, but overall not noticeable unless you look at them too long, though a few are readily apparent in photographs, like the texture used for the sawdust pile surrounding Bidoof when its poking its head out of the dam.

Grinding up research levels can be a little frustrating, so it's better to take this game in small doses and play it on your downtime, not try to rush through it all at once.

Some of the special behaviors seem arbitrary and unintuitive, and I still haven't figured out how to do tasks the game's requests ask for because nothing I try seems to work.

But if you go in to this knowing what the old game was like, and how it's now apparently a series, then you're not going to be disappointed.

If you go in thinking Bandai Namco is going to shoot for the moon on the first approach to an old series in quite some time, then you are sorely mistaken.

This is a brilliant game, it is something different in the world of pokemon, a creative and relaxing experience, and by far the best looking pokemon game that has been made to date. The concept is that you travel to different locations as a ecological researcher, and take pictures or pokemon in their natural habitat. The more you play each level the pokemon start to trust you and more appear in different scenarios. There is a lot of depth as you have to activate certain sequences to entice specific pokemon to appear. It's very relaxing and pleasurable, and gets your creative juices flowing try to catch great snaps of the cute little critters. It is a satisfying challenge trying to beat your previously rated photographs, and the fact you can only submit one photograph of a pokemon breed per run is not a bad thing (which what people have been complaining about) it creates an element of challenge and replayability.

If this doesn't sound the type of things you would enjoy then fair enough, but that doesn't mean to say it is a poor game, far from it. This is a stunning, well put together, unique and enjoyable game.

With the lacking content (only 200 or so pokemon cmon) I would say it isn't worth the full 60 for most people, but I think I had my money's worth in fun. Expand

The whole family has been playing this at every available moment since we got it. We all love it! Its accessible enough that young children can play it, but has enough difficulty for much more experienced adult players to stay interested. A wide range of pokemon interacting in funny and cute ways. We've been playing for about 20 hours now and there is still plenty for us to see and do.The whole family has been playing this at every available moment since we got it. We all love it! It's annoying to see that a lot of people didn't understand the game they bought. Of course it's not an open world, and it has never pretended to be one. To me, it's an excellent sequel to the first episode. The graphics are really beautiful, it's the most beautiful Pokemon game, and I'm glad to see that Game Freak can do a great job. They added a lot of new mechanicsfor example the music. It's annoying to see that a lot of people didn't understand the game they bought. However, there are still some negative points. We can't choose two pictures of a same Pokemon and the camera is not perfection. But still a good game Expand

Please don’t make anymore Pokémon games like this. I get that it’s a refresh, but I really hope they don’t make anymore of these. It’s stale and the Pokémon world doesn’t need to be bogged down by titles like this. As long as it remains a side game, whatever. I’m mostly just here for the main series and now know better than to leave that bubble. Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I just expectedPlease don’t make anymore Pokémon games like this. This game has been amazing so far!! At first I was not sure if I would like this type of game since I have not enjoyed Pokemon spin-off before, but this game is a positive exception! Amazing looking game with a lot stuff to do. Pokemons interact with you which is huge plus. I have already used many hours by taking pictures of different Pokemons and finishing tasks. 10/10

Amazing. Everything I wanted from another Snap game. It looks great. The Pokemon feel alive. The environments are terrific. The soundtrack is dope. I hope we get DLC with more Pokemon/islands eventually, but there is a large diversity to start with!

In a nutshell: as a researcher, you travel to various places, interact with wild Pokémon and take photos to document their behavior. This simple concept only works thanks to the Pokémon, but it doesn’t have to be a drawback, because the game shows the world of pocket monsters more realistically and vividly than any title before it. New Pokémon Snap looks beautiful and is packed full of exciting Pokémon, but the increased complexity has brought the game to a grinding halt. [Issue #4, p.51]

New Pokémon Snap isn't totally perfect, but it is a lovingly, intelligently updated take on a now 22-year-old original that only came to life because it was imbued with Mr. Iwata's magic. I know seeing this sequel would have made him smile. [Issue #53 – July/August 2021, p. 69]
