Neon Chrome is a brilliant title that has plenty of content packed into it with well-designed gameplay mechanics at work to give players a solid title. Though playing in docked mode has a number of minor issues that can be overlooked, the game is a blast to play in handheld mode. If you are looking for an engaging and challenging title you and pick up and play on the go then look no further than Neon Chrome.

Of the different kinds of Nindie titles that have come to Switch this is definitely my favorite genre. I’ve started to become picky about what I play though as there’s been a lot of roguelike titles released, almost to the point of saturation. Initially it didn’t feel much different from some existing games I played until I started to realize how much freedom the levels allowed. After discovering new power ups and developing new strategies I became addicted to dethroning the Overseer. If you’ve been initially turned off of the genre because of the permadeath nature and potentially low replayability than Neon Chrome is a great title to get your toes wet with as it’s probably the least roguelike Shooter/RPG released so far on the Switch.

Neon Chrome’s environmental destruction and bright, cyberpunk colors do a lot to help it stand out from a crowd of dark and dreary rogue-likes. Giving players a sense of progression helps motivate you to play through multiple rounds, and the procedurally generated levels mean you are always doing your best to scout ahead and make a plan for the next room, whether that be taking out a few walls or running in guns blazing.

The procedurally generated levels are rarely exciting to explore, and the characters and enemies are so nondescript that making your way through its 32 stages is as much a test of your attention span as it is your abilities. It’s fine. It’s harmless. It just doesn’t do anything remarkable.

The Nintendo Switch still lacks some top down shooters and that's where Neon Chrome comes in.

Neon Chrome is one of 10Tons best games released on all systems. This is the first time I play Neon Chrome and thankfully i can now play this game on the go with the Switch. Neon Chrome is a cyberpunk top-down shooter. Your mission is to stop the Overseer oppressing the people living in the gigantic Arcology.

The story is simple yet interesting but what kept me coming back for more was the gameplay. The levels are procedurally generated and even if you die, all the characters stats, upgrades, unlocks, and credits are kept safe for your next character. Stats such as attack, luck and health can be upgraded with money you collect during missions. Every time you start a mission, you can choose between 3 characters with different abilities and weapons such as the Assassin who is invisible in dark places and the Hacker who can pirate some chests and computers. You will also face tough boss battles at the end of each floor, these bosses are well designed and each requires a different approach. Completing missions feels rewarding due to the many secrets you can find and new perks to unlock.

The music blends well with the action packed game and it never is boring. I also enjoyed the sounds of the explosions and gun fights.

The graphics however, are outdated which is a big shame and the level of depth in each level isn't what i expected. More attention to detail could have added to the overall experience. The Replay value is high because the game is made in a way that motivates you to come back and unlock more weapons and upgrades. Playing the game on the Nintendo Switch is a big plus and i found my self playing it table top mode most of the time.

Over all, Neon Chrome certainly has its moments, and it can be a lot of fun, especially if you bring some friends along. At the same time, I feel like there could have been so much more. Playing JYDGE before Neon Chrome, I could tell that JYDGE surpasses it in every way. Neon Chrome offers a nice spin to the top-down shooter but the overall experience does lack some essential elements. The increase in difficulty is intriguing but Neon Chrome doesn't have variety to the levels and obvious grinding can put off many. For gamers who enjoy top-down shooters and want to try something new then Neon Chrome is a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch and since we don’t have many Top down shooters on the System, this is the best place to start. Let’s hope JYDGE will also be released on the Nintendo Switch since it is the better game of the two

I even made some comparison reviews and the two 10tons games are the best. Jydge and Neon Chrome. I have spent about 60 hours on this game. I´m on OverSeer v.9 and I still enjoy it!
Maybe when you start the game, you will need some time go get used to it. But for me it was love on first try :-) I only wish it would be 2players like Jydge, so I could play it with my daughter...
