I’d recommend Momodora for anyone that’s looking for an old-school experience with a coat of new-school paint. It’s a beautiful and unforgiving game, but with patience and practice, you’ll be able to see this Metroidvania’s end and dive in for another playthrough to find all the stuff you missed. It’s a well-crafted title that fits in perfectly with the Switch’s library.

The game takes us back to a previous era, and has good images and an accurate soundtrack. However, its difficulty is unbalanced and its 4:3 format may not please all players.

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is a fine example of the metroidvania sub-genre. Depth-wise, it does not quite reach the heights of Hollow Knight, but it far surpasses the likes of Xeodrifter. It's strengths lie in the action, and its charm. This is a fairly bite-sized affair, when compared to the competition, but it is a bite worth trying. With all the basics set in place for such a polished and well crafted entry, hopefully this will get a successor that expands on such a strong foundation.

Momodora is incredible in many ways, and I feel like I can’t recommend it enough. It’s also disappointing in many ways, and I feel like I don’t want to recommend it at all. The act of moving around through the Kingdom of Karst is so well-tuned that I had a lot of fun running through hallways smacking monsters with a leaf. Unfortunately, at the end of the day Karst just wasn’t a very interesting place in which to spend time, and I felt myself wishing for a bit more substance. There is undoubtedly something special going on in Momodora, but sadly I never felt like I was playing anything more than an introduction to a larger game that doesn’t actually exist.

Really loved every single aspect of this game besides the length. 6 hours on my first playthrough feels way too short for a game of this type.

I adore the cute little animation I get to do when I collect a power up. The gameplay is challenging but not too much and you can unlock tougher difficulties as well. The story is sufficiently intriguing for me and gives me the feels. I like all the little tidbits of information each item has in its description. Even after completing it a few times, there's still parts of the game I want to go back to and experience again through fresh eyes. Expand

I don't think I'm going to dazzle anybody with my gaming skills and intuition, so it took me a little bit to get into a groove with this game. Once I did, I happily powered through the rest of the game. Good games in this genre always have a sweet spot in design where, at a certain point, the game really starts to open up and exploring becomes more engaging and rewarding. I think Momodora does a pretty good job in this respect, and I also liked the anime-inspired characters. The story? I'm sorry, was there one? The game is short enough that you don't need a detailed narrative to pull you forward. Expand

Finally, there are multiple endings, but the good ending path is not intuitive at all. Players will either stumble upon it and finish the game not knowing there was a bad ending, or they will miss it thinking it is an inconsequential collectable. These gripes knock the game down to a 7 for me. Expand

One of the most poorly balanced platformers I've played recently. Maybe worth a dollar. It's really bad. Slow, cheap and ugly as hell.
