    Mighty Gunvolt Burst isn’t a fantastic action-platformer, but it is a relatively enjoyable one and miles better than Mighty No. 9-Stages-of-Hell. With a cheap enough price tag and a decent amount of replayability, there are worse options you could choose on Nintendo Switch than this.

    The whole effort is leaps and bounds ahead of Mighty No. 9, perhaps owing to the lack of fanbase threatening to withdraw their support if the game wasn’t at least 90 per cent similar to Mega Man. Mighty Gunvolt Burst suffers some early shakiness trying to find its own voice, but it’s not long before the game will win you over.

    I think Mighty Gunvolt Burst is going to create some division among gamers. If you’re waiting for Capcom to bring back the glory days of Mega Man, this game will likely leave you angry and unsatisfied. However, if you have a few bucks to spend and you're not invested in neither the story nor characters and just want to play a decent side-scrolling action platformer, than Mighty Gunvolt Burst might be for you.

    If it wasn't for its faithful retro presentation and soundtrack, Mighty Gunvolt Burst would be a pretty forgettable and by the numbers Mega Man clone. This is fine for children who are just getting into 2D run-and-gun action since, at the time of this review, there is no Virtual Console on the Nintendo Switch. The best part of playing Inti Creates' latest release is just experimenting with the possible combinations to make all kinds of wonderful weapons of death.

    You may not be fully aware of Inti Creates but you will have certainly played one of their games. From the Mega Man Zero series, and Mighty No. 9 to having a hand in Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Inti Creates are a very well established group.

    We are all aware of what Mighty No. 9 is and what a disaster the entire project was (so we will gently side-step this delicate subject), but you might not be as up to speed on the less well known Azure Striker Gunvolt.
    This 2014 title was released on Nintendo 3DS and Windows, with a forthcoming release on Nintendo Switch this coming August. A sequel ‘Azure Striker Gunvolt 2‘ spawned late 2016 for 3DS, and has also been announced for Nintendo Switch. Similar in style to Mega Man, Azure Striker Gunvolt brings most of what’s good about our little blue friend and adds the ability to tag multiple enemies, speedruns etc.

    Mighty Gunvolt Burst follows the conventional Mega Man route of ultra hard stages, each with their own unique feel and flavour, concluded with the obligatory boss battle. There’s ice and water, fire and industrial, windy sections and invisible platforms, spikes and drops, moving platforms and hidden rooms. Each level feels miles away from the last you just clawed your way through, chucking coin after coin into the swear jar as you did so. The HUD pokes at you by displaying how many attempts you’ve been through. I found myself rarely glancing at this as it serves more like that guy in the cinema who keeps playing on his phone.. you just try to pretend it’s not there. It can be turned off, but that’s like patching over a war wound, right?!

    You’ll be able to pick either Beck (Mighty No. 9) or Gunvolt, each play slightly different from one-another, so it’s worth having two game-saves on the go simultaneously.

    Weapon customisations in the game are plentiful and can change the outcome of a boss battle you’ve had particular difficulty with, so experiment with shot-type, pattern, angle, reflection etc.

    There’s nothing overly unique about the package as a whole, but it all sits together to make a very well-rounded game of infuriating difficulty, albeit incredibly satisfying. It’s got ultra-tight controls and enough customisation to ensure you get the most from your money.

    Coming in at an absolute bargain bin low of £8.99 and taking mere seconds to download and install, if you’re looking for that retro-styled Mega Man-y flavour on your Nintendo Switch, you should absolutely grab this. If you are a die hard Mega Man fan who is looking for a Mega Man game, then this may just anger you a little… or not.. in either case, the Nintendo Switch was screaming for a game like this.

    As with all Mega Man type games, the reward from the genre comes from practice… plenty of practice. Lot’s of muscle memory is key here. I’ve rage quit Mighty Gunvolt Burst many, many times now with what I’d call ‘cheap kills’, although in the back of my mind I know I am just not good enough yet. I happily slapped down my £9 on this as I know I will return to the game time and time again. It has that retro feel about it I just cannot help but admire.    … Full Review »
