That's how remasters should be done! For Switch's capabilities, the game looks and runs alsolutely amazing. For the game itself: it is very immersive and atmospheric, the gameplay is great, but the backtracking and repetitiveness is annoying.

The greatly enhanced dual-stick controls makes the gameplay that much better, and as you lock on to enemies, you get kind of an auto-aim, which makes shooting enemies and bosses a breeze. There is also an option for classic Gamecube controls and Wii-style motion controls, but I personally preferred, and stuck with the modern dual-stick option.

Simply a masterpiece that should be experienced by anyone into action/adventure games, and now made that much more accessible with enhanced visuals and modernized controls.

One small nitpick is the amount of backtracking you have to do in this game, but that doesn't hamper an otherwise great experience. Highly recommended!

Just completed the game, so where to get started with negatives:
    1. Bug - There is no way to turn subtitles ON, and there are only 2 cutscenes as I remember.
    2. The game is so much backtracking, you will backtrack from 50%-75% of your time, just speed running to see where you need to go.
    3. No quality of life at all, you should remember a dozen of things, and you still won't know where to use your new upgrade. No, fast travel. Map markers etc.
    4. Platform puzzles are so annoying and at the end of the game, everywhere are monsters that can push you off platforms, and they respawn faster than you kill them.
    5. Bosses are ykhmmm OK.

    Good:
    1. Map preview is great, one of the best to use(but no markers).
    2. Graphics are good, frame rate is solid.
    3. Music is also very good.
    4. Overall level design is good.

A great remaster of an absolute classic.

Metroid Prime is one of the greatest Gamecube games and one of the best games of that generation. It’s great to see it get a quality remaster for old fans to revisit it and so new players can jump in easily. They did an excellent job with this remaster by taking an already good looking game that was still holding up well after all this time and making it look beautiful. The game works perfectly too. They also added new control options without getting rid of the old controls. One thing to keep in mind though is this is a Gamecube game so it was made within the limitations of that time and hardware. Not that it really matters as I still enjoyed this more than the majority of current games but it’s still worth remembering when going into Metroid Prime remastered.

Metroid Prime is one of those games that can be hard to put down after starting it. The exploration is so satisfying and enjoyable. Every time you find a new ability it triggers your memory of all the things you went past that can now be reached/unlocked. The exploration is also elevated so much by the atmosphere, beautiful visuals and great soundtrack. The environments are a joy to become familiar with and all the small details, like reflections and moisture on the visor, add so much. Combat is good with a variety of great looking enemies to dispatch. There is also a good variety of weapons at your disposal, once unlocked, that you are regularly forced to switch between. Things really work well when faced with a small number of different creatures. There are some puzzles to solve too and the developers trusted players to pay attention to the environment and use the tools available. There is plenty of scanning to do and lore to discover which adds another layer of depth to the experience.

Metroid Prime does have some things to nitpick though. First of all I think the design could be a little tighter or the locations more interconnected to reduce backtracking slightly. It is also on the smaller/shorter side and could have benefited from one more location. I think most first time players will probably finish it in around 11 to 13 hours. On top of this, while it is definitely worth revisiting, it doesn’t have a lot of immediate replayability. You could try for 100% or do a different difficulty but Metroid Prime could be a one weekend game for many people. It does lack a little in challenge and the enemy AI could be better. Another thing is that some of the bosses don’t take quite enough damage which means the fight drags on a tad too long. However none of this brings down the whole experience too much.

Metroid Prime is a beautiful, fantastic game with very minor faults and this is a really well done remaster. I hope Metroid Prime 2 can get the same remaster treatment soon too. Metroid Prime Remastered is a must own Switch game. If you’ve never played this before then go grab yourself copy, this is one of the greats.

Intricate labyrinths and crowds of enemies in them introduce frustration. If you are looking for an FPS, don't buy metroid prime, as the FPS metroid is absolutely terrible, for example, the developers divided the weapons by colours, you need exactly the yellow weapon to kill the yellow enemy. Even Quake 1 is a better shooter than Metroid Prime

Becoming a fan so late in the franchise and playing the 2D games, all I got to hear about for years was how good the 3D ones are. Between not owning a Gamecube anymore and Prime 4 being continuously delayed, hoping for a remaster of the original became one of my number one wishes for the Switch, and thankfully my wish was granted.

Metroid Prime captures the full essence of what makes the franchise great, with its puzzle-like bosses and fantastic progress system. The feeling of exploring, finding a new ability, and getting excited to explore new areas is at its finest here. Gameplay is fast and intense with very impressive visuals making this a true remaster in ever sense of the word, and overall for a game two-decades old it still felt as though I was playing something new and fresh. Where this game showed its age was in its brutal difficulty; games were shorter back then, so they had to be harder. A lot of my play time was spent replaying the same rooms between save points trying to reach a new milestone, and that repetitive nature rarely made me feel happy to succeed and made me instead cheer it was over. The other sign of its age is complete lack of direction. Sure occasionally the game gives you hints but sometimes they’re contradictory to where you need to go, and they only give you those hints after you’ve searched aimlessly for a bit. To make things worse sometimes you have to solve very strange one time puzzles to progress, with no indicator of where or how to solve them. To you Gamecube kids who figured these puzzles out with not strategy guide or internet I tip my hat to you, because childhood me would have given up.

In the grand scheme of things however these complaints are minor and cannot take away from the true work of art I played. The world was fun to explore, the music was some of the best in franchise (and game) history, and the most important thing was this game was FUN! Every boss fight felt great to win, every power-up made me feel cooler having earned it, and in general this game completely exceeded my expectations for Metroid in 3D. Years of hope and patience definitely paid off, and I can only hope more remasters are on the way because I want to continue this journey all the way to the long awaited new entry.

Many elements were lifted directly from 2d metroid without sufficient consideration for how they would work in a 3d or 1st-person environment. An incomprehensible amount of the bestiary is locked to fixed points or tracks, with most unable to harm you unless you walk into them. Consequently almost every enemy encounter before the last 3rd of the game asks you to either just stop, stand and shoot for 5s in no danger, or try to duck and 1st-person platform past them to save a little of your lifespan. You can really feel the hours slipping away as you clean up the aggressively respawning enemies over and over, wait for animations to switch weapons at almost every door in the endgame, and backtrack through tedious lengthy areas without enough connections, shortcuts, or mobility tools. If you enjoy lore you'll also have the pleasure of reading 1000s of completely flavorless scan descriptions between the odd interesting one. Those enemies who aren't simple time gates are massive bullet sponges. Even in the act of pulling the trigger your time is wasted as you have to fire a sequence of regular shots to even begin charging a beam shot, which feels terrrrrible. Most enemies are also tiny bugs, this works fine in a 2d sprite environment but lifted into 3d 1st person game they The game is carried entirely by graphics, atmosphere, and sound. Sadly the graphics go partially to waste: you will spend a significant portion of the game with vaseline smeared on your screen as you use various visors. The opening hours are the best, leaving a good first impression for someone looking to get out a quick review. Many are sadly also blinded by nostalgia and the original's reputation. There are definitely positives: the graphics are largely beautiful, the game runs smoothly, the music is great, and there's a real sense of accomplishment as you acquire more abilities and master terrain and enemies. These elements were enough to carry me nearly to the end of the game, where the tedium of the combat increases sharply. As a fan of the 2D games it's sad to see this fumble. Expand

Would have liked to see some of the more dynamic lighting, but seems like that relied on instructions accelerated in the GC gecko hardware. Maybe to 'expensive' on the Nvidia GPU, or just didn't fit with the new more advanced baked lighting? In any case, I'll take the smooth 60fps any day. Honestly a Switch game shouldn't look this good .. I tried all 3 modes of control, became proficient at all of them, and not sure which is my favorite since they all have pros and cons. Dual stick works well with the pro controller on the TV, classic feels good in hand held/joycon since the sticks are smaller and feel a little less 'precise'. Honestly a bit surprised how well motion pointer worked considering no sensor bar, and enjoyed that quite a bit. It's more about the offset from the last time you zero'd out than actually pointing at places on the screen. Which allows for a more relaxed arm/wrist position.

No, this game doesn't need fast travel or infinite save states. That's the whole point of exploration and finding new things the second/third time. Loved it. Maybe it should be 9.5 because they didn't credit the names of the original creators (blanket staff credit), or including more behind the scenes/documentary stuff would have been neat... But I'm rounding up.

I don’t get the hype. Never played the original game. Maybe that’s why. After finishing it I felt like I ran every single corridor 500 times. Map is super confusing. Menus are archaic. Enemies are annoying at the end, appearing again and again, at the end I just ran by them all the time. Nice sound. Nice textures.

This should be the gold standard of Remastered games.
They took something that was already rather good and updated it with better graphics and controls.

It does lose 1 point bc my go to sequence break for this game is no longer do able. They must have used the players choice version of the game instead of the first release. Not a big deal but still a point to bring up.

New effects don't stray from the original vision, but actually bring the GameCube game to today's standards. Metroid Prime Remastered is one of the best looking games on the Switch and a master class about atmosphere forged by superb soundtrack and art design.

Although its general level design is still quite fun and immersive, the last third of the game put the player in unecessary and confusing backtracking. It was acceptable in the 2000s, and even forgetful in the middle of this awe-inspiring 3D adventure, the first Metroid since 1994, but feels unengaging in 2023. Prime's combat is also lackluster, specially with Space Pirate encounters. The combination of numb combat interactions and uneventful pacing hurt the overall arc of Samus in Prime: our hero should turn from a solitary weak combatant to a resourceful one woman army, just what happens in Metroid Dread; sadly, traversing feels slow and unintuitive in the latter part of Prime when you should feel the most powerful. Still, a must play and a classic.

I am aware that this review might be hated by some, but I can only review the game based on my experience. Before now, I've only played one game in the Prime trilogy, that being Corruption, and that was a very long time ago. With the release of this remaster, I saw a perfect opportunity to dive in and really see this first game in the series for what it is.

Metroid Prime Remastered is good. Its not fantastic, and most of the reason for that is because it's still Metroid Prime. I had no experience with the original, but I trust the long time fans when they say that it looks beautiful compared to the original, and yes it does look great either way. While I find it difficult to directly criticise the movement, I believe that it is at fault not because it's bad, but because the world feels like it is designed to be as purposefully obstructive and tedious as possible.

Many parts of Prime confuse me: many doors require specific weapons to unlock which is just time wasted, many essential items are located stupidly far away from any travel points meaning you have to go through a lot of already completed area to reach them, and the game is excessively terrible when it comes to backtracking for upgrades. Numerous times in my playthrough I reached an area, had no idea what to do, and eventually got told to go to the other end of the world to collect 1 item so I could progress just that little bit further... only to have the exact same thing happen to me again 20 minutes later. The wonder and magic of the world drained out of me, as I was travelling through these areas dozens of times just to get a random upgrade that let me then get stuck a little later. It's as if the placement of these absolutely necessary to beat the game upgrades was just chosen at complete random, with no thought as to how the player might figure it out.

Combat feels extremely awkward to me, since I feel that the two best examples of the games combat are the first couple of hours of the game, and the game's final boss. Outside of that, combat became little more than an irritating practice of tedium rather than something I had to care about. Maybe the only real exception to that would be a couple of the other bosses, but after the first couple of hours of gameplay I just found myself not caring for the combat, and simply walking through as many rooms as fast as I could because the combat wasn't worth it and didn't provide me any extra benefit. Enemies that require specific visors or beams aren't harder, but just more tedious because you have to press extra buttons to kill them. I really felt like the final boss was the only thing to get the idea of different beams in combat right, and then it **** it up with the visors shortly thereafter.

This review might seem absurdly negative, so I want to end off talking about stuff I do like: the start of the game is brilliant. Between the frigate tutorial and the first 3 or so areas, everything works fantastically, and truly shows the potential of Metroid Prime. It is unfortunate then that the game did away with exploring new environments or places you felt like you shouldn't be like in Metroid Fusion, for simply going through the same areas a dozen times over. The parts that make up Metroid Prime are all fantastic, but it takes more than raw ingredients to bake a cake.

Just beat the game. It's an ok game. The first person platforming doesn't get too crazy. Story really isn't important at all. It's just you exploring this maze, gathering power-ups and trying to make it to the next savepoint. Making progress is fun, the bossfights not so much. They were always a struggle for me. I just don't see me playing this ever again. Kind of overrated of you ask me.

I had no idea I would miss projectiles illuminating the surrounding, but I do, and I've realise that it was big part of what made the original even more immersing, 2. I think there could be an option to toggle "looking slightly down" when jumping for dual stick controls, 3. Music could have been updated with richer sounding synths, and for those who'd prefere original music, there could be an option to toggle, 4. I still get lost every now and then even with hint, 5. I always liked the map, but It could have been tweaked to include more shades to easier differentiate between rooms, 6. it's a neat picking but original doors looked better. 7. 3 shots before being able to charge is an odd design choice.

All in all, this game is a must play for everyone who likes to figure things out.

The dual analog controls make a huge difference in gameplay. The soundtrack is almost completely intact from the original, which is fine and good. The game just has some of the best atmosphere of any game ever made. As others have mentioned, the backtracking can be annoying at times, and probably adds a few hours to the whole game, but it can be enjoyable anyway because you get to use your new abilities to traverse those areas again. Figuring out how to transport between each area can be tricky. It would have been nice if Samus can warp to her ship or something, at a minimum.

The only reason I won't give this game a 10 is because some aspects of it have not aged well. Although the graphics are decent for today's standards, you can still tell that the general design of objects and environments are outdated. The environments are compact for today's standards and the game progresses quite fast. Special items are just waiting in a room to be found, which is kind of funny. The game relies on save points for saving the game and there are only 14 of them in the entire game.

En la actualidad se juega bastante bien para el tiempo que tiene pero se nota algo anticuado y no puede destacar como otros juegos con desarrolllos más sofisticados y novedosos. Can be very annoying to move from room to room, and have to deal with some boring enemies like the Chozo Ghosts, that keeps respawning all the time. A very great experience because it is one of the best game's in the nintendo game's especially on the game cube and it's one of metroid games so it must be super ultra good and make people crazy about it.

This game is a perfect example mixing remake/remastered. What's the remake you may ask? Kudos to Nintendo on the shadow drop and released the game for $40 instead of $60 like they did with Skyward Sword HD which was just texture upscale. Expand

Few words can truly discribe the majesty of the original release of Metroid Prime on the Gamecube! It was not only a game that showed off the potential of the little purple cube but also expanded what a player could expect from the genre and the new found Retro Studios. It still is to this day a shining achievment in atmosphere, gameplay, graphics and sound design.

It was not only a game that showed off the potential of the little purple cube but also expanded what a player could expect from the genre and the new found Retro Studios. It still is to this day a shining achievment in atmosphere, gameplay, graphics and sound design.
And yet some how Retro Studios saw to breaking the usual mold of a traditional visually enhanced re release to instead rebuild the games visuals completely in a new engine.
All other aspects are largely the same and still deserve top scores as they have aged incredibly well but the visuals and new control options have guarenteed this game it everlasting place as one of the greatest games of all time. Now accessable to more gamers than ever before. Visually there are few games on the switch and even from the other more powerful competition that exhibit such intricate attention to details. Some details being a testament to the original development and some all new details of exquisite nature. New or old everything has been re lit, re textured or remodeled.
When you first land on Talon 4's surface you are imidiatly great but the thick humid atmoshere redesigned to be even more dense than ever. You will experience rain flowing off your suit contextually. Whether aiming up, down or level. There is an animation for it all.
We are far from where there details end. Your visor which helps to immerse you into the role of Samus Aran will have a number of animations occur to give further depth to her visor. Such as steam from volcanic areas, moisture from waterfalls, gore from exterminated creatures, liquid run off from emerging from a body of water and even her face reflected in the face of explosions. It is truely a marvel taking on this role as it isnt a traditional action oriented ordeal. Quite litteraly it is a Metroidvania in First Person making it one of the most unique games in the genre and in gaming history. You will take on enemies as you venture deep into Talon 4's belly uncovering her many secrets in an effort to understand the state of the planet, its inhabitants and what part you have been chosen to play.
This is a one of a kind game that has been made even more perfect than its original release because of incredible control options and visual changes that rival even the current gen of consoles. It should not be missed by anyone looking to show off what the switch can do, any FPS fan or any Metroidvania fan but Im sure there are others out there that would be taken by the experience for different reasons.
Last point before I go. Huge fan of water physics and the first game was lovely and known for the ripples. Sadly Trilogy took it out. They are back and better than ever. Find a small body of water(certain bodies of water show this better than others) and use your charge shot or charged ice shot and shoot near an edge. You will notice that the ripples dont just go outward from the blast point but that the bounce off walls. I had never seen anything quite like it. Truly this game just kept blowing me away! Buy it!

Since it was difficult to avoid being exposed to several glowing reviews of Metroid Prime online and since I quite enjoyed Metroid Dread, I decided to trust the majority and buy the game to see what makes it one of the “greatest games on the planet.” To be honest I’m still not sure the reason so many people are head-over-heels for this game. I played through about 70% of it so far and haven’t had much fun at all, not that I’ve had a bad time mind you. One of the biggest reasons I see for the shower of praise is the atmosphere, everyone loves the incredibly immersive atmosphere. I don’t see it. The world is very well realized and detailed, especially considering it’s a gamecube game and quite old, but there isn’t much to really push it to a level of immersion where all the problems I have can disappear. The music is a big part of this lack of atmosphere to me personally. The first time that the music kicked in for the Chozo Ruins area, I found that it so ruined any sense of mystery or tension that I turned it off. It’s not a bad track but it’s so mismatched and creates an unpleasant dichotomy between the world-building and a silly little song playing at full volume while you fight your way through every alien trying its hardest to murder you. There are some songs I enjoyed but for the most part I find the music to be middling and unimpressive, much like the gameplay. It’s hard to see why people might prefer the slower, clunkier gameplay of prime to a 2D metroid if the atmosphere doesn’t hit. Where Dread is fast and snappy, Prime makes you feel like your suit is 20x as heavy and it really bogs down the pacing. I played on normal difficulty but it feels too easy. The only difficulty to be had is trying to make it back to a save point with enough health so you don’t die and lose the last 15 minutes of progress, which is a good motivator but can be frustrating, though I feel as though the save points are never too far. Another thing that bogs down the pace of the game is all the backtracking. Probably my biggest issue with the game as a whole is the amount of wasted time bouncing from one area to another and back again when you get a suit upgrade. It is incessant and unnecessary and I don’t know how it is simply looked over in every 10/10 review. Not much is fun about going through the same area you’ve been in for the 6th time and fighting another flying enemy that won’t leave you alone ever. It’s a massive flaw. On the positive side though, I think the presentation is great for a switch game. The sound effects and fidelity the team at retro managed to squeeze into the little system are quite impressive. It baffles me to see negative reviews where the only thing mentioned are the “lackluster graphics.”
I never write reviews for anything but I am genuinely confused as to the mountains of praise this game gets. I’m not completely dissatisfied with it but it is so incredibly far from being a “10/10 perfect game” that it’s a bigger mystery than anything I discovered on Tallon IV.

Fantastic game, first time playing it. Brings all the good stuff from 2002 into the modern era. OST is fantastic and the gameplay is simple. The world is fun to explore and while there is some backtracking it's like unwrapping a present.

Despite a huge nostalgia bias this is still a fantastic game. Some tedious bits and cheap bosses, but the atmosphere and exploration outweighs those cons by far.

Hard to believe they did so much to what is already a masterpiece on what amounted to a shadow drop. The modern controls and visuals are a thing of beauty. Once-in-a-generation game.

Nintendo really just shadow dropped one of the most acclaimed games from the gamecube era with a complete visual overhaul, new models and textures, absurd amount of controls customization, colour blind support, Gamecube controller support and is chargin only 40 usd for it ?
    Colour me impressed.
In comparison with the lackluster "remaster/HD/deluxe" editions like skyward sword, pikmin 3,

In comparison with the lackluster "remaster/HD/deluxe" editions like skyward sword, pikmin 3, mario kart 8, this feels like a remake. The game looks like Prime always did in my memories.
This level of care, love and effort is rare to see in the gaming dev atmosphere nowadays. Retro studios really put all the work into making this version the MUST GO to play this masterpiece

This is an excellent remaster that preserves a classic game and makes it highly playable by modern standards. It also confirms that Metroid Prime remains as special a title as ever.

Game makers: take note. Metroid Prime Remastered is a masterclass in how to modernize a masterpiece. Twenty years after the series made the transition to 3D, this remains a classic that has stood the test of time. The updated visuals prove that with some optimization and visual tricks, the Switch is really capable of delivering great games. In fact, this is one of prettier – if not the prettiest –Switch games to date.

A classic returns in Metroid Prime Remastered. A complete visual overhaul makes the world of the game look better and more detailed than ever before. A new dual-stick control scheme makes the game approachable and palatable for new players, while veterans can opt for controls that mimic the original. Underneath it all, though, the masterpiece that is Metroid Prime Remains unchanged. Some more quality of life improvements could perhaps have been made, but it is a tiny complaint for a near-perfect remaster.
