A superb remaster that brings back one of the best shooter games ever created. [Recommended]

Remastered’s graphics look great, and while the game continues to, for the most part, translate well as an expansive, engaging shooter, I’m most struck by how the game allows Samus to be a person. Not a woman with her baggage, sexualized and discarded like a Grand Theft Auto: Vice City sex worker from the same year, and not relegated to the background the way 2023’s Dead Space does to its female characters.

In Metroid Dread, you are encouraged to sprint through, keeping clear of enemies that, at the outset, you have no means of defeating. Your central relation to the game world is that of anxiety and, yes, dread. Metroid Prime, by contrast, wants you to feel inquisitive toward its lonely landscapes, to seek understanding of your enemies as much as mastery over them. Through its contemplative gameplay loop, wherein entering a new area means taking time to consider it, 20 years later, Metroid Prime might have even more to say about what it means to slow down, taking time to view the world with curiosity and wonder. Metroid Prime Remastered is fantastic. We’re just a couple hours in, but it’s every bit as good as I remember it being, without the disappointment that can so often be felt from revisiting a childhood favourite.

It’s a beautifully weird system, one I’m not entirely convinced Nintendo and Retro Studios will have the confidence to adopt with the upcoming Metroid Prime 4. It’s one thing to ask players to marinate in the tension of a video game whose design is from several decades ago, will they have the courage to do so today? I hope so. What is Metroid, if not asking the player to take a leap of faith on themselves? The future is unknown, but the past is present here. And it’s a reminder that not all change is good when it comes to re-releases. Metroid Prime feels awkward—and it’s better for it.

    Colour me impressed.
In comparison with the lackluster "remaster/HD/deluxe" editions like skyward sword, pikmin 3, mario kart 8, this feels like a remake. The game looks like Prime always did in my memories.
This level of care, love and effort is rare to see in the gaming dev atmosphere nowadays. Retro studios really put all the work into making this version the MUST GO to play this masterpiece

The original game already looked quite good even today, but this remaster makes the original look completely outdated in comparison. Retro didThe original game already looked quite good even today, but this remaster makes the original look completely outdated in comparison. Retro did not simply upscale the textures, but rebuilt everything almost entirely from scratch, to include more polygons, better lighting, and more effects. There is also a bunch of control customization, including the original gamecube and wii controls, as well as a more traditional dual-stick layout. This is probably the most effort any Nintendo remaster had recently. Full Review »
