This is a long awaited game in the Metroid series and as a huge fan of the series this is amazing. The graphics and art style look great and the gameplay is fun and challenging. The game once again has you exploring for upgrades and abilities plus there is many secrets to find. Honestly, I'm not the biggest Metroid fan. I like most of the games well enough, but I find many of them aren't worth the high scores they consistently achieve. Honestly, I'm not the biggest Metroid fan. I like most of the games well enough, but I find many of them aren't worth the high scores they consistently achieve. In a year like 2021, where it feels like a lot of games are good but nothing special, Metroid Dread successfully provided me with the best gaming experience I've had this year.

For what it's worth, Dread is definitely the most appropriate title for this game, thanks to the horrific creatures inhabiting the planet you're trying to dig your way out of, and extremely strong robots called E.M.M.I. Those robots become increasingly more powerful as the game goes on, and become particularly difficult to deal with. Being chased by the E.M.M.I. is panic-inducing, and you'll likely die to them many times, which only serves to bring about that feeling of dread when you realise there are more waiting for you.

I don't think the game is perfect, but many of my complaints aren't anything too major. The controls, combat, bosses and story all feel great for me, and I took the time to get every possible bonus I could which took about 20 hours for me. I'm aware many people are comparing this game to Hollow Knight, as a single playthrough of this game is much shorter than that game, however I'll argue I enjoyed Metroid Dread a bit more than Hollow Knight, if only because I felt that Hollow Knight really started to drag on toward the end of it's play time, and some of the enjoyment was definitely lost on me because of that. Metroid Dread is condensed enough to not have such an issue, with bonuses for players that want to challenge themselves.

The best 2d metroid IMO, had sky high expectations for the game and they were exceeded. It's a combination of the best elements of fusion and super metroid, along with a few new elements(e.g. the EMMIs) that work fantastically.

Pretty good 2D Metroidvania and will satisfy all the cravings of Super Metroid lovers. A couple of new gameplay features and upgrades keep the series fresh so it doesn't just feel like a rehash. My biggest gripe is the map is absolute garbage. It's messy and really hard to distinguish all the symbols on it, which isn't a good thing for this kind of game.

People are complaining about the graphics. The graphics are fine. The art is actually beautiful. The animations are so well done they remind me of the first time i played the original Prince of Persia or Flash Back and seeing the rotoscoped animations. Dreads animations are site to behold at a rock solid 60fps in game.

Play control is tight and fluid.

Music is subtle where it needs to be and nostalgic and epic where it needs to be . Perfect.

People who complain about how linear it is haven't played it . That is just a fact. The game is a perfect hybrid between Metroid 3 and 4. It does funnel you to where you need to go on a set path when it needs to, but also completely opens up and lets you explore to your hearts content in between big moments. I honesty don't know how they could have done this any better than they did. It is near perfect.

The challenge is much higher than previous 2D entries but , its also 2021 .Games are just harder now and to be honest i feel like if it was any easier people would be complaining it was too easy, so I think they found a good balance. Tough but fair.

Too be honest the only thing that is keeping me from giving a perfect 10 is some questionable save location decisions where a part of the level will close off and not allow you to back track to a save point for a bit , and sometimes that is exactly when i want to save. So I'm forced to play for a bit longer than i want for that session to find the new save point. That does get annoying.

Other wise as a long time Metroid fan I couldn't have asked for a better sequel after waiting 19 years, and it is definitely one of the strongest games in an already amazing series. Buy it .

I am a long-time PC user, but I have to admit that this game is better than the entirety of PC gaming. I am confused because I thought PC was the master platform, yet I can't play it legally on PC on day one? Wtf? I have immediately sold my PC and bought a Switch, I have also burned my copy of Hollow Knight. The world is now a better place in general.

I do not usually submit games reviews, but this game is something that needed to be praised. The graphics are superb, the gameplay is smooth and the bosses are challenging, what else can you ask for? There are many haters giving it 0 only because it's a very difficult game, but, you need to know the type of game you are going to buy.

Having been too young to enjoy Super Metroid when it first released, and having went down the Prime path when Fusion released on the same day, I've never played a 2D Metroid on release before this one. Now with SO MANY games like it out, Dread comes at a time when Metroid games are just the funny word at the beginning of the genre name. Samus Returns on the 3DS a few years back was an ok return to form for the 2D games, but it was still just remake. Now the first true new 2D Metroid game has come out and it does alot of things right but also fails to stick the landing for me.
What the game gets very right is the atmosphere and the tone set by the game. What little story is here is done well, even with the few voice over lines sprinkled in throughout the game but they are very few and far between. I would say, however, that you really need to at least have a general grasp of the overall storyline to understand some of the stills that show up sometimes because the game does nothing to explain anything that's happened in the past, outside of a rushed opening movie. It also really does a great job of making Samus a supreme badass in cut scenes and how she kills bosses. I liked how they portrayed her here, even though she literally only says 1 line in the game. The boss encounters are fun, but I was really hoping to see certain staples of the franchise return in some way or another that just arent present here at all. No spoilers but the one returning boss was at best 3rd on the list of bosses I wanted to see again. Although the final boss was actually pretty fun, if brutally hard at first.
However the game falls behind several other side scrolling games in the genre that Metroid popularized over the years. The controls are very hit or miss for me. Certain moves just arent very responsive, like the Screw Attack and the Speed Booster, especially when you're required to hit them with pixel perfect accuracy to get some of the hardest power ups in the game. Also the game seems almost allergic to indicating to you where you need to go next in the story. And the ships AI that's supposed to do that for you is basically no help at all throughout the whole game. I spent 12 hours getting 100% on my first run through and about a 1/4th of that was me being lost trying to find either the path forward or an out of the way pickup that did nothing to help my overall battle prowess.
At the end of the day, Dread is a very good Metroidvania game that does alot of things well and, most likely, ends the main Metroid storyline on a high note. However there are better games in the genre now that would be far more deserving of your attention, if you've not played them. And its hard to argue that this game is even better then Super Metroid. Dread has its merits but it does feel like Samus and her crew have been passed by other games in the genre that bares its name.

10+ years later for me, and near enough 20 for long time fans, we finally get to see what happens next, and it doesn't disappoint. The setting of the game felt extremely atmospheric, the lore implications extremely interesting, and the game play felt absolutely amazing after an initial teething period.
I would also like to point out just how *detailed* the backgrounds to rooms are in this game. Metroidvania's are a type of game that will have many rooms, and they could of just gone the easy route and made them copy and pastes, but almost every single room from start to finish, felt unique.
The new abilities felt amazing to use, and Samus has never been faster, leading to some extremely tense and adrenaline fuelled boss fights.
I can't recommend this game enough, this was almost everything I've wanted in a Metroid game in the last 10 years.

It's a great game and Metroid is probably my favorite franchise but I wish it did a little more and after 100%'ing it in 10 hours (I don't count the filler like Hard Mode which is cheaply hidden behind a Normal playthrough and the speedruns) it doesn't feel worth $60.

Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
