The bosses in this game are solid. Take for example the combat with Kraid, the combat is so smooth and joyful yet I barely noticed any frame drops during the combat. Each new boss takes a few attempts to understand the boss but once you get the hang of it, the intense fights are commendable. The boss fights aren't too long, they aren't repetitive (not the soldier bosses), the combat is smooth & intense, the bosses are also not too hard and not too easy. They did a great job striking such a good balance.

The game slowly opens up making Samus more powerful after each upgrade, unlocking new abilities that Samus didn't have before making the character more powerful and joyful to play. As the game opens up, the Samus's combat abilities increase which allows more ways to tackle a boss/explore.

The final few minutes of the game is so well implemented. I'm skipping this section to avoid spoiling the good content.

Overall, Metroid Dread is a very well implemented game. With intense combat, right balance for bosses difficulty, super smooth gameplay and fast combat, great bosses, intense E.M.M.I gameplay, great level designs make this game a masterpiece.

Absolutely loved this game. Atmosphere, movement, combat were just about everything I had hoped for in a modern Metroid game, especially after Samus returns on the 3ds. The map design seems to have caused a rift between players, some feel is too easy/hand holdy, some are adamant it's too obscure and easy to get lost. I'll admit there were several places/puzzles I got stuck on, but I still enjoyed my time roaming around. When you are familiar with the subversive hidden blocks from previous games they almost become obvious in this game. And to be fair, the designers explicitly tell you to bomb and shoot everything when you're stuck, often incentivizing you with pickups just on the other side of a wall. The smooth movement and teleportation rooms really speed up the navigation, so I really don't understand why 'backtracking' is such a dirty word in this context. It should be a joy to go back through a previous world so powered up and smash through it.

Do I with some of the textures were higher resolution? Sure. But would I prefer that over 60fps or fast load times? Absolutely not. There is so much going on with the backgrounds, lighting, and particle effects it's still a gorgeous game.

Not much of the music is memorable outside of the game, like you're not going to be humming it all day. But it fits the areas and their mood perfectly, and songs great on the tv or handheld. Songs effects are awesome, though the new item pickup jingle is a bit... 70s synth? Idk...

Samus is a badass again, I'll take it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
The gameplay is nearly flawless. This is the smoothest moving Metroidvania I've ever played, and that included being better than Ori and the Will of the Whisps. Samus moves effortlessly as she runs, guns, flips, counters, grabs edges, and tucks into her morph ball. The difficulty is excellent; I died plenty of times against EMMIs and bosses, but I always had the right mix of frustration and determination within me to try again and again until I persevered. The weapon unlocks are well-paced through the game. I normally hate being stuck in water levels when moving like a slug, but this game managed to balance it out well enough so that getting the Gravity Suit felt like an excellent award without making me feel annoyed beforehand.
The one flaw I see in the gameplay is that ending certain boss battles requires you to successfully counter the enemy. I rarely failed the boss-counters, and I enjoyed the flashy cinematic sequence that took place, but I could see it being extremely annoying to be at low health and then needing to counter a boss to win; just let the player bombard the enemy a bit more if needed rather than requiring a counter.
Samus is portrayed to perfection in this game. Like when she lands in Kraid's pit, she has her cannon raised. When Kraid steps into the light, she lowers her guard; she's fought this fatso twice in her life already, and her body language in this scene does so well to portray her thoughts, like, "Oh. . . its Kraid. This guy again. . ." And then she blasts him in the mouth with a charge shot. Later on, when you fight an experiment creature that clogs up the heating systems, there is an ending cutscene where the creature is falling off the edge and into the lava, and Samus is marching forward while bombarding it with merciless cannon fire. There are cutscenes in the game where you see Samus's eyes, and they express moments like anger, determination, fear, and curiosity. One cutscene has her speak the Chozo tongue, showing her stoicism and confidence that she can save the day, even with the odds stacked against her. In the end, she completely unleashes her rage on the final foe for an epic DOOM SLAYER kind of moment.
Exploration is challenging and simple. The map does an excellent job of telling you which areas are available for you based on the abilities you've obtained, and using custom markers helps you pinpoint where you want to go. The game rarely tells you WHERE to go, but it does a good job telling you where you CAN go to further progress. Since Samus moves so fluidly, you'll find yourself going from one corner of an area to the other in a few minutes.
    Cons:
The graphics could have used some polish. The art direction is good, but there are many areas that looked bland where they could have used some detail. There are plenty of jaggies in this game, including the Metroid veins on the outside of the suit. The lighting made many of the creatures look like they were covered in some kind of slime. From the first time I saw the E3 reveal for Dread, I among many other people thought that the graphics were a bit lacking. I personally wanted them to take the art style from Samus Returns and upscale it to Switch levels of power.
The music was forgettable. Seriously, I can only remember the songs that originated from previous games, None of the original Dread songs stuck out well enough for me to get the tune repeating in my head. I was also hoping for more orchestra/opera-style music. I'm a sucker for the music in the Prime series, so I was hoping to get more of that in this game.
The plot was weak. If you played Samus Returns and saw the Chozo Memories, you'd have a small idea of who the main antagonist of this game is, but even with that you barely know anything about him. It's like throwing Darth Vader into Return of the Jedi without mentioning him in any previous Star Wars movies. The end of the game does reveal a bit more detail about how the villain is connected to Samus, and it does add some cool lore in regards to Samus that helps certain little details of the previous games make a little more sense, but it didn't answer any questions that people were asking about the overall game series lore. Also, why is the Federation so chill after Samus thwarted their plans in Other M (yes it is canon and that sucks) and Fusion? I thought there was going to be a big twist that revealed the EMMI units were made to hunt her down; why else would they be immune to her weapons and have some of her abilities?
Speaking of EMMIs, they didn't fill me with Dread. Have you ever played Subnautica? My first playthrough of that game literally made my heart race as I approached the Reaper areas or the Ghost areas. The EMMIs were fun, but felt like a police chase rather than impending death.
    Where is the third difficulty?
Finally, where are the special endings? Samus Returns did an excellent job of giving you a different ending based on the difficulty and your speed.

No love for this franchise in almost 2 decades and this is what we get?! Nintendo is always at least a whole generation behind the competition in terms of power and graphics but they still could have done better than this. There is no excuse for this BS! They don’t even care. Like Disney and their endless barrage of tasteless unoriginal live action remakes. If they’re going back to the side scrolling roots, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it better be on the same level as games like Ori, especially if you have the balls to want $60! This is barely a step above “Other M” and that game was also pure trash! Yet there are plenty of morons out there that just eat this s#@% up and that’s how Nintendo keeps making money and continuing to produce utter garbage because they know you will buy it… and pay full price too! This game is worth maybe $5. Definitely not worthy of a full $60!!! It’s like a cheap, rushed mobile phone game for kids and the graphics suck! The only thing missing is ads. Watching the gameplay and seeing enemies, big and small just disappear in what looks like a singe frame when you kill them, with no particle affects, no corpses, no cool explosions, just… nothing. And that’s after you fire you’re entire arsenal at them and don’t even make a dent because the game forces you to rely on this new dumb blocking/counter system that seems to be the only way to actually get through the game. No voice acting, no dynamic backgrounds or meaningful scenery, bland atmospheric music… everything’s flat, nothing stands out and nothing is memorable, except the fact that you just suffered through this sorry excuse of a game and will never get that time back. It’s like they did the bare minimum to get a passing grade of 65. But this is a solid F+ and that’s being generous. True gamers and fans know better and will not put up with this BS. Still to this day, the greatest entry in the franchise is Metroid Prime! The first game, not the sorry @$$ sequels that started this downhill plummet into where we are now. Anyway, a big F U to Nintendo and I hope you go broke if you’re going to continue to push this crap on us, you disgusting, fat, lazy, money grubbing A-holes!!! Expand

A decent and fun way to tie in the other Metroid games into a cohesive story line. There isn't anything terribly different from this and other 2D Metroid games in the gameplay department but it is polished and feels nice. Combat and boss battles are decently difficult without being annoying and there are plenty of areas and challenges that help this game live up to the title of Dread.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
