    - Lackluster music and sound effects
    - Sense of atmosphere is lacking when compared to games like Super Metroid and Metroid Prime
    - EMMI sequences have a lot of unrealized potential, the best solution always seems to be to just run through the area as fast as possible because the Phantom Cloak is so useless
    - Lacking a sense of the titular "Dread". Getting chased by an EMMI is stressful, yes, but nothing about their auditory or visual design rally scared me. I experienced more fear in the later stages of Prime than I ever did here.

Overall, a very good game, but can't see eye-to-eye with the likes of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime.

I got stuck a lot near the beginning of the game because I didn't know I was supposed to do that. Also I could argue that there are too many abilities in this game to keep track of. The combat and movement is mostly very satisfying, but some moves don't work as well as they should like the double jump. The E.M.M.I. segments are pretty tense at first, but the excitement kind of wears off after a while. The game is fun when I actually know what I'm doing, which I didn't for half the game, but that's more my fault than the game's. The game is very challenging, but rarely feels too difficult. The graphics are pretty good but it feels like it could have been just a bit better. The music is kind of repetitive but can really amplify a tense situation. I can see why people love this game so much, but it isn't exactly my cup of tea. I had fun, but I'm not a huge fan of metroidvanias. It is one of the better ones I've played though. It's not the best game of the year, but definitely top 10. Expand

On the lead up to Metroid Dread, I played the previous installments in the order of Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Fusion and Returns, less than 3 weeks ago for the first time, my introduction to the genre was Hollow Knight and then played both Oris.

I’m personally tired of the Metroidvania discussion, I’m not here looking for a checklist on which to box a game, I’m here looking for a game that’s enjoyable and good to play and Metroid Dread ends up being that and my favorite of the 2D series.

The controls are immaculate with most actions at fast reach, the movement is fluid, the powerups contain both some of the best classics and some new and fun ones where you can see the progression of what Mercurysteam did on Samus Returns. The game is intense, especially the beginning and bosses are challenging but not overtly so like in Hollow Knight.

The game is inbetween Zero Mission and Fusion in terms of linearity, allowing you to explore a fair bit but always giving you a north.

The atmosphere is tense, more son than Fusion and the music reflects that. The compositions were crafted for this environment in brilliant electronic fashion. Although for many (including me) there weren’t so many of the classic themes, it is by no means a bad OST and while playing it blends in seamlessly with the game.

The story is much more present than in the previous games, with text and cutscenes that make you more invested in what you’re playing through.

The map, although in the beginning overwhelming, tells you literally everything you need to know, every door and cube you’ve interacted with is noted by the map which is fantastic, a filter option would’ve been nice but I personally didn’t need it.

Graphics didn’t disappoint, I read that it played worse docked and I can’t attest to that after playing on 32” 1440p 144hz LG Monitor I have nothing but praise for the visual department. However I will note I had the game crash on me once during an elevator, loading screens were severely FPS laggy and near the end there was a fight in particular where I had some noticeable frame drops
The pacing feels great with no powerups being too near or far apart, at the same time the initial progression is really interesting as to which upgrades you get first, gaining some of the classic upgrades felt much more rewarding than in most other Metroids.

My biggest complaint ended up being the E.M.M.I, the first 2-3 are fine but the ones after are a pain in the butt and feel tedious and gimmicky.

    SPOILER AHEAD
    -------------------------

Halfway through the game they deactivate the remaning E.M.M.I and I felt that it was the perfect time to get rid of them only for them to be reactivated soon after, I hated it, felt like a chore downing the last ones.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Metroid Dread ends up being the most enjoyable of the 2D series, with great controls, graphics, world and sound design, boss battles and pacing. Glad to say Mercurysteam didn’t disappoint.

Each boss fight was innovative and gave a thrilling challenge, with each failure only strengthening resolve to try again and do better. In both terms of story and gameplay, this game truly feels like what the franchise has been building up to in every sense of the word. The best part of this amazing package is without a doubt is its use of cutscenes which perfectly blend the subtle storytelling Metroid is famous for with intense cinematic experiences. Metroid Dread really pushed this franchise to new heights, and minus a few minor gripes here and there, I can say without a doubt the entire experience was near perfection. Expand

    2. The level bosses and EMMIs are fantastically rendered and animated both in the 3D preview and during in game combat. The AI of the level bosses (and especially the EMMI's) is a significant upgrade over prior Metroid games.

    3. So far the map exploration is a mix between linear progression and open world. There are areas that you enter from one point but can't leave via the same path. The closed backward paths serve as a sort of a guide indicating you are headed in the right direction to advance in the game.

    The so/so - meh:

    1. The jump in difficulty when entering the EMMI areas is significant (probably too much so).

    2. The travel between level cutscenes are bland with a grayish blue background and Samus frozen in place. Some background music, Samis humming to herself, something to break up the monotony would have been a good polishing touch.

    3. The map graphics look dated like something from Super Metroid - bland and not very sharp (see Ori and the Will of Wisps for something more detailed).

To be completely transparent, this is a biased rating from a long-time Metroid fan, but it serves the purpose of countering the many below-five-out-of-ten reviews I read before witing my own, as most of them border on what I think is cognitive dissonance and contradictions. My objective score would be a 9/10, the point being that this game is in no way a 2/ or 3/10.

First of all, I'm not a graphics-obsessed player, so, to me, this game looks better than decent and at times even beautiful. The consensus I've seen so far is that it is good-looking, at least for a Switch game. I have no idea why some people (granted, a small minority) are bashing the way this game looks. I would assume they are expert programmers or something like that.

Secondly, there's the gameplay and the game's difficulty. This is such a strange topic because I read low scores complaining that it's too hard, with some mechanics like the EMMI chases being very annoying; and others complaining that there's a lot of handholding. So, which is it? After my Normal mode playthrough [11 hours, 100% items], which was fairly challenging on its own, I went directly into Hard mode and just finished it in half the time [5 hrs, ~30% Items], but I rescinded on collecting most of the items. Hard mode is very challenging, but not impossible, less even so if you went through Normal first. This is coming from someone that struggles so much with Dark Souls, that I've never completed that game. I read too many reviews complaining about this game's difficulty, and I comically wonder how many of those people make fun about game journalists' skills (or lack there-of). Or maybe they A-smashed their way past the tutorials/tips that tell you how to deal with enemies because they hate "hand-holding".

I enjoyed every fight, especially the last one, where I got my butt handed to me many times. When I finally won, I did get that feeling of accomplishment EA raves so much about. And all throughout the game I got pretty much the same feelings I experienced before while playing past Metroid titles.

To conclude, if you are well-versed in Metroidvanias and have played a vast catalogue of them, I won't judge you if this seemed average at best to your veteran taste and want to give it a 5/10. I would also agree this should be around the $30 mark, $40 at most. But like I said at the beginning, this isn't a 2 or a 3. I encourage everyone to play it, even if you don't buy it but just borrow it from a friend.

This game satisfied me completely, I bought in on release and have been playing only one or two hours a day because I didn't want it to end. having a Metroid game on a console makes Metroid 10 times better already as you feel like you can properly control Samus now. i think everything in this game is perfect, however, it was slightly frustrating to get the last 5 or so collectibles.

It is not as expansive as Super Metroid, but Dread makes much better use of everything Samus is capable of.

It is also probably both the most challenging and accessible title of the series. The game wants you to learn it and do well. I look forward to replaying this as often as I do Super Metroid.

A note on the story too: I never cared much about the plot of the series, but I always enjoyed the character designs. Dread does an excellent job of wrapping up the plot arc while also elevated the previous games by retroactively creating an amazing finale to build up to. It also helps make the thematic changes started in Fusion even more fantastic. Unlike it's inspiration, Alien, Metroids are part of a galactic ecosystem, and just like in real life, destroying a predator can dramatically change the environment in unpredictable ways. Dread certainly keeps up with that tradition while opening up some clever options for future games.

One divisive element are the EMMI chases. At first I was a bit dismayed by them, but they get more and more interesting/challenging and offer a nice change of pace. They ended up being one of my favourite things in the game because it forces you to delve in these areas where you are no longer in control.

One thing I didn't like as much are the cut scenes. At least some of them. Some of them felt very slow for some reason, but I must say that the boss cutscenes were all excellent. So its a mixed bag, but overall nothing too displeasing.

Hands down one of the best games of 2021 (maybe even the decade), and is a good reminder why the genre is called a METROIDvania! The movement feels snappy and responsive, the combat is intense and challenging, and the stealth parts are appropriately nerve-wracking.

Gameplay aside, this game truly shines in the exploration and its character designs. These are augmented by a mysterious and foreboding narrative that stands well enough on its own if you don’t have much knowledge of Samus’ story thus far. As opposed to many modern Metroidvanias, the game encourages players to find their own path forward through exploration, careful use of the map, and some trial-and-error. Your AI helper will give you general directions to facilitate the story, but beyond that, your path is largely yours to control. Some players who are new to the genre may find this design decision frustrating at times; but it is an important one from both an immersion and story perspective. You are a lone bounty hunter, lost within an uncharted world, and you yourself are being hunted. That level of immersion is something encountered less and less frequently in the modern era of video games, where players are bombarded with waypoints, quest markers, and exposition all elements.

While definitely more accessible than some of its 2D ancestors, Dread is still a difficult game and does not hold your hand. Be prepared to die more than a few times, especially early on in your adventure; however, as you explore the game world, you will uncover abilities that will give you the advantage against the multitude of hostile creatures and machines.

Overall, whether you are a long-time Metroid fan or new to the series, Dread is both a masterpiece, and the quintessential Metroidvania. I cannot recommend this game enough, especially to those who enjoyed games like Ori and the Blind Forest and Hollow Knight, and even Dead Cells to an extent.

Pick up this game, be ready to explore, and step into the boots of the OG video game heroine; you won’t be disappointed!

Metroid Dread is a game I almost put down for good about 2 hours in. I was very interested in the story, and the gameplay was fast and fluid, but I could not find my way through the game's labyrinth and grew frustrated with the constant backtracking. The exploration of Metroid was always what turned me away from the series.

After no one bought my listing for it on eBay for the night, I decided to give it one more try using something I generally avoid like the plague when playing video games: a walkthrough guide. While many Metroid fans will probably tell you this is taboo, I'm a large advocate for utilizing whatever methods a player needs to improve their experience in a game, whether that's lowering the difficulty or looking up solutions when they're stuck. By consulting a simple guide that just directed me toward which area to visit next whenever I got lost to the point where I got annoyed, I was able to experience the game's superb combat, platforming, and puzzle design, and I was immediately hooked.

Samus is not just starring in a modern Metroid game, she herself has been modernized. The silent protagonist displays character and style throughout this game that you never quite got to see throughout the past games. Her strength and determination guide you through a hostile world without allies, and these qualities allow you to emotionally connect to the character and her motivation to survive, which is something I found past Metroid games sorely lacking. Another new feature of Metroid Dread is a much greater emphasis on narrative, splicing Metroid lore in a way that culminates into a very fulfilling plot, with twists and turns and a mystery that drives the player's motivation to keep pushing forward.

And that motivation is certainly needed because the game's bosses, EMMIs, and boundless exploration without many directional cues present the player with real challenge seldom seen in mainline Nintendo games. The suspense the EMMIs present and the difficulty of these bosses really contribute well to the game's atmosphere and theme of dread.

Metroid Dread has some of the most seamless platforming and battle mechanics I've seen in its genre. The game runs so smoothly, allowing you to execute strings of complex maneuvers at lightning speed, which the boss fights will require you to do. Each upgrade you collect feels liberating and satisfying to use as you forge new paths and further Samus' quest to escape the alien planet, even if one or two don't see as much use as you might hope.

Overall, Metroid Dread is a masterpiece within its genre. It combines the classic Metroid formula with modern gameplay elements and centers it all around a compelling narrative. It's the first eBay listing I've posted that I'm glad no one bought.

It keeps the core elements from the previous titles, but integrates them with a whole lot of quality of life improvements. The game does a perfect job at controls mapping, any button on the Nintendo switch has its function, Samus' movements and animations are smooth as silk (the slide and melee counter are a joy to use) and it's fast paced even in the stealth sections. The map is huge and i was scared i might lose myself very often, but the perfectly crafted level design manages to set you on the right path even without giving precise instructions.
The artstyle is amazing, i loved the cinematic cutscenes and the animated landscapes in the various sectors: they create a nice sense of immersion, and the sound design helps in doing so. If i had to find a minor flaw, that would be the soundtrack. It's good and creates the right atmosphere, but it doesn't reach the heights of Fusion and Super Metroid.
Last but not least, the boss fights are pure genius. They require you to master your upgrades, they are probably harder than any previous Metroid game and might be tough to deal with for a casual gamer, but they are not punishing (you respawn at the previous room) and they give you different options for beating them. The game also has different animations in case of sequence breaking, glad the developers thought about that. The final boss fight, in particular, will probably go down as one of the most memorable of this series. Story-wise, Dread deeply explores and expands the lore and that's great for a long time fan, but a newcomer won't get lost due to the brief summaries at the beginning, important to recap the story basics. To wrap this up, I could easily see Metroid Dread being in the GOTY conversation. Yes, it's that good.

Mercury Steam and Yoshio Sakamoto absolutely nailed this entry in the main Metroid series.

The story is lightly sprinkled on with very compelling cutscenes and (very) limited but impactful dialogue. The persistent and annoying Navigation rooms from Fusion have returned, but not in the same way. They are much fewer and far between, and "Adam" does not give you explicit orders like last time. instead of having the next hour of gameplay explained to you, the rooms just give you general advice and direction.

The movement in Dread is smoothed even further from the engine for Samus Returns on the 3DS. Not only does Samus control like a dream, but she also has a few new, original abilities in this entry that make traversal and back-tracking much more interesting.

Speaking of back-tracking, Dread does a wonderful job of providing a shortcut at the exact moment that you feel like you need it in order to return to previously traversed areas. Not only this, but they designed progression based on a looping route throughout each area of the game. You may find a convenient shortcut to backtrack for a missed Energy Tank and find that they put a boss with an upgrade in the path you were planning on backtracking to begin with. Environments are sometimes entirely changed on subsequent trips through an earlier area. Mercury Steam really went all out on ensuring that revisiting areas you've been to already is a pleasant experience.

The upgrades hidden throughout the game that you might search out if you're attempting to 100% Dread all vary in how obtuse they can be to obtain. Some are as simple as laying a bomb and claiming it, while others require VERY precise morph ball or speed booster tricks that the game doesn't teach you.

But the greatest thing of all that Dread does is something that Every Metroid game does. It teaches you how to play and sharpens your control of Samus as you play. Just like Zero Mission or Super Metroid, nothing can replace that feeling of finally solving the super difficult Speed Booster puzzle for the final Energy Tank.

Likewise, the bosses in Dread are exceptionally brutal on the first run. BUT they all teach you how to beat them. On my first attempt at each major boss in the game, I got the feeling that they seemed almost impossible. Some of their attacks SEEM unavoidable, and their attacks are PUNISHING. But each time you attempt the same boss, you'll notice one more thing that will help you get further, and further, until suddenly you can completely style on the boss, avoid all it's attacks, and feel like a total badass. This game really demands that you out-play the bosses in order to beat them. Sometimes this translates to a cookie-cutter experience, but here, it ends up being very satisfying in execution. You can tell that Mercury Steam took notes from other popular Metroidvania games like Hollow Knight and Ori, so as not to be behind-the-curve on difficulty.

The E.M.M.I. seem to be the most controversial part of this game, when looking at other reviews. They are only scary the first couple of times you have to run from them. Eventually you will see them for what they are -- a nuisance. However, I still believe they add to the experience. Their existence bars you from exploring large chunks of each area at leisure. Once you find a way to destroy each of them, the expanse of rooms they were patrolling open up to reveal a lot of shortcuts and items.

On your first playthrough, running into an EMMI seems like instant death. And this is a complaint being echoed by a lot of voices on Metacritic. But what is often not mentioned alongside this is that Dread has VERY forgiving checkpoints--if you're caught by an EMMI and die, it just puts you outside the EMMI zone door you entered through. Unlike past Metroid games, dying does not return you all the way to your last save point. Save points are basically there for when you quit the game and load it back up. The same goes for bosses. Losing to a boss doesn't require you to slog all the way back from a save room. Dying just puts you right outside their room so you can try, try again.

I also must address negative reviews I've seen about the design of the game:

This game looks phenomenal and anyone saying the graphics are bad is a troll or is blind. This is one of the most beautiful Switch games to date and has an immense amount of detail and story-through-subtext, just as you'd expect from a Metroid game.

My only real complaint about this game is that the EMMI aren't scary enough and I wish I could adjust the controls. The default controls aren't terrible, but nobody was ever hurt by having the option.

EDIT: The EMMI's can be somewhat reliably countered with practice. Also, this game has sequence breaking. I'm saying this because a lot of the negative reviews get these two things wrong.

It takes surprising elements philosophically from super metroid and fusion; a great combination of the two, with an atmosphere that is effective. Samus controls like a dream, she is fluid and animated; this really shows her demeanor and her best representation to date. The level design is impeccable; they have found a way to pace the game effectively without being handholdy (super metroid) and also having objective(fusion); you are never really in one area for two long. The E.M.M.Is don't drag the game down; the stealth is intense; it's cat and mouse and so you're always on the run never losing momentum; and while they can be frustrating at time; it never felt like the game designed them cheaply but rather it's your fault. The Boss battles are some if the best in the genre and in action games and are sequential in nature thus letting you rely on observation and precision while using all your abilities (up to that point) to beat them. I see some people complain about the QTE segments of the game, saying it's cheap; I see it as a reward for understanding the boss and figuring them out; this is a sign of you beating then quicker. The music might not be memorable but they are effective and complement the atmosphere; it amplifies it. The graphics while has blemishes in some of the texture, as a whole; really does make the game atmospheric and eerie, it's lighting and color use makes for vibrancy in this eerie isolated world. Going with 3D instead of 2D Sprite was the right choice as it helps articulate some cinematic points in the game; I personally feel the graphics are underappreciated because the game is rather fast paced you don't get to acknowledge the background and how varied the areas are; they are refreshing and very different from each other. The game runs at a smooth 60fps which just makes samus animation all the more fluid and natural. Some of the cutscences like when you transport yourself are in 30fps but since they don't affect gameplay; they are a none issue and most cinematic are in-game engine so you're still in that 60fps. The story is not in your face; and each time it's on display it's impactful - this is especially for metroid fans who have followed the story throughly. I am not the biggest metroid person when it comes to the lore but I found it interesting. Story is the least of my problem in games so the fact it's not in my face and when it comes; it's quick, concise and action packed is good for me as I like to get back into what games do best; gameplay. This is honestly a triumph for not just mercury steam who showed that Nintendo was right to trust them, and not to the genre - which shouldn't be seen as just an indie genre but the fans who have waited so long; it was well worth it on all front. As for the game itself, the map is huge and well designed, it's fun to move around as Samus, the combat has more options and is fluid as ever, pacing is phenomenal (until certain moments near the end), the boss fights are the series' best, and the story delivers for the most part.

The biggest selling point of Metroid Dread are the EMMI robots that chase Samus during the adventure. These gameplay elements create high tension that is greatly welcomed. I feel a sense of pressure and adrenaline when being chased, in a good way.

The only negatives I have with the game is the soundtrack. I find this new tracks to be very underwhelming and forgettable. The remixes of older songs are great though. Other issues I have with the game comes to my personal preference, but I wish there were more boss fights and one more area to explore. However, that is me wanting more of this amazing game. My final complaint is that I think the ending is too abrupt, but I will not go into spoilers.

Definitely GotY material. Challenging, but fair with a focus on mastery of the mechanics and game knowledge. If you’re looking for an Action Adventure Platformer that rewards tight play then look no further.

This is combined with the excellent animations which makes everything you do feel dynamic and fluid. On top of that, all of the abilities that you unlock all lead to a great powerful feeling of progression and all her abilities can be used on the press of a button swiftly.

The story is good. Metroid is not known for its stories told within game, and Metroid Dread does not stray from this much. The gameplay and the environment are far more important to the game, however its story is far from disappointing and has given a boatload of information for the lore that the community has been wanting for decades. It definitely scratches the itch I've been wanting for Metroid lore without ruining any level of mystery. That said this is not a game for you if you only care about the lore or story, as it is not focussing on that.

The graphics are very good. I was surprised by how good they were; I recall during the initial trailers for Metroid Dread I was concerned that the graphics looked a little crusty, but when actually playing it I was amazed by how gorgeous the environments were. There are some effects here and there which do look a little outdated simply due to being on the Switch, but overall the game still looks astounding. It's hard to believe this game runs so consistently on the basic Switch model.

The EMMI encounters are tense without making you panic and sufficiently hit that titular feeling of 'dread', but every time I died in the entire game I always felt it was fair. This game is one of the most difficult Metroid games to have come out, but every time I took damage or was outright killed I always knew it was my fault and knew how to improve. Additionally the checkpointing system and savepoints are very generous so it is rare that you will ever lose progress on death. That said, this isn't the hardest Metroidvania by any stretch of the imagination - every boss I encountered I was able to defeat within 10 tries.

The weakest aspect of this game, to me, is the soundtrack. It is not bad, hence I am still giving this game a commending score of 10/10 as I believe this is a modern masterpiece. However, it focuses heavily on just being atmospheric rather than being melodic. This is not a negative thing, it is just weak.

I have played many Metroidvanias. One of my favourite games of all time is Symphony of the Night. Even so, it is very rare for me to find simply jumping about and doing basic traversal fun. But in Metroid Dread, every single action I was doing felt fluid, responsive, and just fun. The Metroidvania genre as a whole more or less uses backtracking as a foundation, and Metroid Dread has, for me, removed the annoyance that sometimes comes with backtracking entirely, simply due to how fun the gameplay is. It's hard to overstate that and it's not something I expected going into the game. Obviously everyone will respond to the gameplay changes differently - veteran Metroid players will especially need to get used to the way they changed walljumping - but for me I find it hard to think of many ways this game could be improved to be a more enjoyable experience, besides giving us more. And if that's not a sign of a great game, I don't know what is.

One last thing to add, however. Though I think this is a masterpiece, I would *not* recommend this to absolutely everyone. It is an ideal Metroidvania, however it is still a Metroidvania. It therefore requires precise jumping, aiming, and will involve a lot of cryptic secrets and backtracking. It is common to be lost and not know what to do, and it is common to have to go over the same areas over and over again. This is not a bad thing for me, but it's worth considering this is still a Metroidvania and so is not a game as universally recommendable as, for example, Mario Oddyssey. Still, it is the best Metroid so far in my opinion, so I would recommend anyone to try it regardless.

Game of the Year! I've not played a metroid game before (love hollow knight and ori) but this comes out swinging! Fantastic game! Amazing visuals, tight controls, interesting areas with exploration, puzzles and bosses. Never been so excited to get equipment upgrades in my life. Wow! 10/10 LOVE IT

The best Metroid experience that's been released since Super Metroid. The controls and abilities have been polished incredibly well. Bosses are challenging and fun, and this is the first Metroid game to integrate a compelling story without it ever slowing down gameplay. Absolutely worth playing if you like Metroid games, as this is the best one that's come out in over 25 years.

This game does not hold your hand, you have to USE your BRAIN.

It allows you to feel the reward of learning the facts and mechanics and feeling like you are becoming a better player. It nails the awesome feel of the Metroid games and you have explore to figure out where to go. Once you realize that you have to shoot walls to reveal hidden paths it becomes much more straight forward on where to go. There are a few tough areas to figure out, but that is the fun.

Game is absolutely amazing, hands down the best game since Metroid Prime series. Super Metroid is the only other game that competes with this title.

if you are a cry baby who needs their hands held you wont like this game, but if you enjoy being challenged and understand what a Metroid game IS. You will love this game and appreciate what the developers were doing.

I applaud the developers for having the courage to produce a game as finely crafted as this, with the difficulty. Crybabies can cry and gamers can game. Peace out.

Best Metroid game in since Super Metroid. Difficulty is a little on the high side but the ability to restart outside of the room you died makes this manageable. Similar counter system from Return of Samus but doesn’t rely on it. Music is on the simple side but adds to the mood of the game and helps to hear the E.M.M.I’s. Metroid is a big franchise and it wasn't easy to create a sequel for it. Mercury Steam managed to do it splendidly!

I see a lot of negative reviews due to the E.M.M.I system and the difficulty of the game. There are so many easy games out there, you don't have to play Metroid Dread. And you shouldn't give it a negative rating because maybe you're not the target audience for this game.

I think they made the game with the fans in mind and as a fan of the series, I really appreciate it! For me the difficulty is very well balanced, MS managed to create captivating new mechanics, made creative use of Quick Time Events, created a lively and interesting map to explore and made good use of Counter mechanics.

The story is worthy, a beautiful closing to the series. Do yourself a favor and play this game.

The game is so well paced and never overstays it’s welcome or feels bloated. Bosses are challenging and may at first feel impossible but it is so well designed you learn them and gradually figure out how to beat them. It’s never cheap nor punishing. Every move can be avoided once learned and each time you die you start right outside the fight to jump straight back in to push it further.

Exploration is fun and the game controls are so tight running at a locked smooth 60fps. I only had a dip once. Samus is so satisfying to control. Game rewards you for sequence breaking and exploring if that’s your thing. Story had some pretty epic moments and if this is your first Metroid it has a great summary at the beginning to catch you up. There are plenty of people new to Metroid that are loving it and want to try older games now. I gave it a 10 because it’s my game of the year and I just haven’t had this much fun in a game on switch, PlayStation or PC in awhile. It’s great to see this Nintendo franchise back because it’s soooo different than anything else Nintendo makes. Highly recommended and totally worth the cost. Reminds me of why it created an entire genre (metroidvanias). It’s weird because I didn’t finish Ori, hollow night and some others but this one I just couldn’t put down. While you do backtrack it never feels like it …. Don’t know how to explain it. Freakin great game and man there’s pressure on Metroid Prime 4 whenever that comes out because this one killed it.

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
