Engancha mucho.

After nearly 2 decades since the last new entry in the 2D Metroid, Mercury Steam have done the seemingly impossible. They surpassed Super Metroid.
Metroid Dread is the new Standard not only for the Metroid series but all of Metroidvania going forward. All we now can hope is that Metroid Dread sells well enough for Nintendo to Greenlight the next Metroid.

    - the music is perfect. I know people are complaining about it, but for me, it's 11/10. The mix of ambience and music is something pretty hard to do, and the composer does it flawlessly. Like the first ambience/song when you start playing. It makes the setting so good. Emmi sound design is sick too. How can you make that cute beep to do a dready ambience setting and plus being a sort of song? It's crazy and mind-blowing.
There are actually songs too, lots of, and they are sooo good. They are growing on me very fast and on the top list of Metroid songs

-The map design it's perfect too. How can you fulfill super Metroid hardcore fans with it's ultra criptic map, and encourage newcomers to finish that kind of experience? Mind-blowing too. It didn't take much long for me to know the routes cuz I'm a ultra Metroid fanboy jaja but I understand the direction they went and I'm happy about it. Now in 2021 everyone can become a Metroid fan! And That's what Samus needs
Really excited to see what's next for this franchise in every aspect, and I hope next time is a full revolution. Being Metroid 5, it's perfect!

Nothing particularly groundbreaking but it's very competent at what it proposes. Also, prepare for a challenge! Which is unusual for a Nintendo game. The bosses will give you quite a trouble, so I suggest to keep looking for itens and especially energy tanks, but don't worry, it's not unfair to the point of screwing the experience.

Maybe the only real novelty here are those robots called E.M.M.I. They inhabit certainly areas of the maps and will pursue you until you're out of their range. If they catch you is game over (there's a way to escape, but it's quite hard to master it). They won't stop until you find a particular weapon in each of those areas to kill them. At first I find those encounters I bit frustrating because of the instant death, but I came to enjoy it and I think it was a interesting addition.

Among the few things that hurt the experience for me are the controls. I find some commands overly complicated and can get confusing to master it during some stressful moments, especially bosses battles and those speed booster puzzles (I hate them). Also the soundtrack is a bit disappointing, only the few Super Metroid remixes are worth a listen.

If you're an experienced Metroid player like me, chances are you won't get lost and confused at any point in the main path, despite having large and complex areas to navigate, which is a testament to the excellent level design. Controls are very snappy and fun, Samus controls wonderfully. Though I wish the game actually detailed how shinesparking works, because it is necessary for many optional collectables and it is never properly explained.

The story will definitely satisfy long-time Metroid fans, especially when it comes to the ending. I only wish the game was a little longer. It has an appropiate duration for a 2D Metroid game, but an additional area (ideally with an extra major boss) would have gone a long way for me. Finally, the music is kind of forgettable (sadly), but the graphics are exquisite and the framerate is silky smooth (60fps). Easily one of the best looking Switch games. Overally, Dread is a masterfully crafted Metroid title that sits comfortably among gems like Zero Mission and Fusion (Super Metroid is still better IMO).

Those are all great games, but Metroid Dread just has the "It" factor that makes a game and all timer. If you love metroid and Metroidvania style games, this is a total no brainer. It's the best in the history of the genre. Gamplay, story, pacing, puzzles. It's all here and polished to a diamond like sheen. This game is just a joy to play and I can't seem to put it down. All of the QOL improvements you expect in a game like this are here. Just go and get it if you don't have it yet. Nintendo knocks another one out the park.

Nineteen years after the release of the previous chronological entry, Metroid Dread is a welcome return to the roots of the franchise. However, it suffers from several of the most glaring issues that MercurySteam's first Metroid entry, Samus Returns, also had.

Starting off with some of the noteworthy pros, one of the biggest improvements Dread has made is to the fluidity of the controls, which take full advantage of the Switch's twin sticks (and is especially effective on the Pro Controller) and makes navigating the world fun and enjoyable. The exploration itself is also excellent, with lots of the trademark hidden corridors and puzzles that long-time fans would expect from a main series title. The storytelling, while not quite up to par with Fusion, clearly is heavily influenced by it and gives a satisfying narrative that keeps you engaged and wanting more.

Being a longtime fan myself, I desperately wanted to rate this a 100/100, but cannot bring myself to do so for several reasons. Primarily, these complaints revolve around the game's high difficulty and how its mechanics exacerbate the problems that arise from it.

The first facet of this is the issue of damage received from enemies, and in particular bosses. The hardest hitting enemy I can remember from the classic 2D Metroid games would have to be the Omega Metroid from Fusion, which would take a full energy tank upon a hit, though even then, the battle was mostly scripted and thus rather inconsequential. In Dread however, this is the norm for standard enemies, and bosses regularly take from one, all the way up to three full energy tanks on a single hit. This not only makes your collected energy tanks feel far less useful, but leads to absurdly quick and often times unfair feeling deaths.

The second would have to be the overreliance on mini-bosses and EMMI encounters. Without going into detail as to prevent spoilers, there are about 3 different mini-boss types in the game, not including the EMMI. One of these, a pre-requisite to fighting an EMMI, is not particularly offensive, but the other two are fast-paced, cramped encounters that suffer from the damage problem from the first facet, and are overused to the point of irritation. One particular instance near the end of the game has you fight a nearly identical mini-boss twice in a row, with only about 5 minutes of exploration separating the two. The EMMI, on the other hand, never gave me a sense of fear or dread as was the intention, and quickly went from an interesting new mechanic during the first or second areas to another point of monotony by the time I reached the third or fourth.

The third facet is a returning issue from Samus Returns, namely, the counter. Thankfully, in normal exploration, the counter is almost entirely optional. However, in several boss fights, using counters is required to progress and/or cause damage. I vehemently dislike this mechanic, as the feeling of having to repeat a boss phase or lose a large chunk of your extremely limited health because you missed a single quicktime event is nothing short of enraging.

The final boss of the game in particular is a major offender of the damage and countering facets, along with simply dragging on for too long, despite not having any mid-fight checkpoints, meaning you will have to start the fight from scratch if you fail. My playthrough of the game took about 30-35 attempts to finally beat it, for reference.

On an unrelated point of criticism, the soundtrack to the game is incredibly disappointing, especially as a follow-up to Metroid Fusion, which has one of the most memorable and creative soundtracks of any game I have ever played. I cannot remember a single piece of music from the entire game aside from the remixed main theme and jingles that have appeared in every Metroid game, and while playing, the music seems to almost fade into the background instead of accompanying and enhancing the experience.

Overall, while I am very happy to see the release of a new original 2D Metroid title, and have enjoyed the majority of the game thoroughly, the fundamental issues of the game have greatly hampered my experience, and I do not expect to have the urge to replay the game any time soon. For those reasons, I give the game a score of 80/100.

However most importantly the gameplay is close to perfect. Controls are tight and the buttons are well mapped so that it becomes second nature to pull off any of the actions required. The story is the same old "Samus has lost all her weapons" deal (She really should be more careful...) , but this is of little consequence as the rest of the storyline is great. The normal grinding mechanic is punctuated by regular spurts of genuine panic as the E.M.M.I. sees you and starts its chase.

In my opinion this is the best 2D Metroid game so far and not only that but probably one of the best games of 2021 so far.

One thing to note is that if you have grown up on overly easy games then this game will be a shock to the system. However if you like challenge rather being told you are great all the time then you will love it.

Some people said the game is too short for a Metroid Game, but I think it has to do with the Map, in the first Metroid we don't have Map, in Super Metroid, the map was there but was not detailed. The map is very useful to know where you are at any time and know exactly where to find things like power stations, elevators, save points, etc and that make the game a little more "easy". For someone how played Metroid Samus Return for 3DS, may know exactly how useful is having this kind of map and how much may reduce the difficulty of the game, but if you don't wanna use the map and play Metroid in the old way, you can do it just don't open the map and that's all.
The E.M.M.I. s in this game make you escape in the zones where you can find it, and they will make you see the GameOver message very offen, but since they are pretty fast, space from them is very satisfactory.

Metroid Dread forgot about the more conventional narratives that were used in games like Metroid Prime 3 or Other M to do something similar like in Fusion, with some dialogues from Adam from time to time that serves both as lore building and exposition device. The most plot-twisty cutscenes are also pretty expositional by nature, and definitely would prefer a more interpretational approach but they’re not bad, they’re simply not great either. The story has some interesting twists, especially by the end but they also felt a little clumsy and forced to superficially add some stakes if you ask me, again, they’re not bad but aren’t great either.

Dread also approaches gameplay and exploration in classic Metroid fashion, making it one of the better if not the best aspects of the game. Combat is ultra-fluid and it's a reminiscence of Other M, with fast-paced movements like dashing and the newly introduced counter maneuver (I believe it was introduced in Return of Samus).

The combat shines the most while fighting bosses, all of them are mean and defying enemies that will kill you pretty fast if you’re not paying attention as they will take a full energy gauge in one hit, you have to rely on reflexes and common sense to beat them.

The boss fights only will increase their intensity with each boss you defeat, some of these bosses or mini-bosses are reskinned enemies but they all have some kind of new movement or appear with a partner to make things more interesting and never feel like you’re making a chore or repeating yourself.

There are stalker segments directly borrowed from Metroid Fusion, in these zones you are chased by indestructible machines called E.M.M.I. These segments add good tension while you traverse the map and since every one of these machines has a different ability and their zone layout it’s different between them (not to mention as you progress, they keep getting more complex) they keep things interesting and challenging.

Depending on your tastes it may or might not offer replayability, after you finish the game depending on your difficulty and completion time you’ll be rewarded with an allusive image to a past game and unlock hard difficulty. In my personal opinion, the awarded images aren’t enough even if they’re cool illustrated.

Haven’t played Samus Returns, I can’t say how much the series has evolved in the hands of MercurySteam so I’m not sure how much of this is an upgrade from that game, however, my time with Dread was mostly positive, as it borrows elements from other Metroid games like Fusion and updates them to newer times.

    Metroid Dread (NS-2021)

Un must have pour ma part.

Also there's lots of advanced mechanics for those who'd like to dive deep into the game. One thing I didn't like is that Dread is much more linear than other Metroids. Lots of one-way gates that simply discourage exploration. And that's a very bad thing in a Metroidvania...

$60 price point is shady, I agree. At this price I'd recommend this game only to hardcore Metroidvania fans. You won't regret it :)

Visuals hold up as well. Every area felt nice to look at and the transitions from each zone felt consistent.

What I did not like, personally, were the E.M.M.I enemies. The escape and evade aspects were fine due to the fluid movement that Metroid has but it gets old after you have done it a bunch. The other part, after you have dealt with the Control Unit of each area, is to kill the E.M.M.I. It just feels tacked on. You stand and fire at its head until you're ready to fire a charged shot. This is highly repetitive and I feel like the devs could have done more with such a high profile enemy of the game. The game even seems to make a joke, at its own expense, when the final E.M.M.I just dies after making an attempt to transition to another run and hide scene.

I also just feel like the game didn't try to break the mold very much. Had it tried to change things up a lot more it would have been a perfect game but it still remains one of my favorite games of 2021 and I will be going back at it again for a Hard mode run. Oh, yea, one last gripe. Hard mode is locked behind beating the game. I've always just felt like that was a bad practice.

No doubt, it's a great entry in the series, and a great game overall.

Now, onwards to the reasons the I didn't give the game a 10. First, I don't hate the E.M.M.I., but I don't particularly like them either, mainly because the insta death mechanic coupled with the fact that the counter reaction times are random. These robotic fiends also take away a bit of the exploration aspect Metroid is known for, given that you are constantly pressured to run from them in a good chunk of the game.

And since Metroidvanias are flourishing in the indie scenario, I think a little comparison between Dread and my personal favorite indie release is due. In my opinion, Hollow Knight is the absolute king of Metroidvanias to this date. It has perfect pacing, combat and exploration. Most character abilities are useful both for traversal and combat, which isn't the case in Dread, where some skills are clearly used only for the sake of unlocking new areas on the map. Finally, regarding game length, Metroid Dread is kinda short, lasting for about 8 to 10 hours on a first playthrough, whereas Hollow Knight lasts for a whooping 30 hours. This difference in content becomes even more significant considering I bought Dread for full $60, and Hollow Knight for $7.

All that said, you can't go wrong with Dread. Now, back to waiting for Prime 4.

I got a noticeable framerate drop just once, on a boss fight, which made it harder than it should have been but nothing too weighable.

The first trailer of this game made me play trough the entire 2D Metroid timeline, and I could't be happier about it! Incredible entry in an incredible series! It is a close second to Zero Mission for me, tied with Fusion.

Game is a masterpiece in the metroidvania genre. Absolutely perfect! Great combat, fun puzzles, difficult bosses and Samus feels the most fluid she’s ever felt. Just an amazing game through and through.

An amazing Metroid game through and through. It incorporates all the classic elements of the older games and expands on the formula with new gameplay mechanics. I especially like the melee counter and the dynamic aiming. The bosses are some of the best in the series. It's a challenge that is welcome compared to the previous tamer enemies and bosses that acted as bullet sponges. It's niceAn amazing Metroid game through and through. It's nice to see the franchise being inspired by other Metroidvania. Also, the EMMI bring a whole new element of fear and vulnerability, just like the SA-X in Metrood Fusion.

Unfortunately, Metroid dread was a bit too short. Itll take you 8 to 10 hours on average. But thats not the main problem. The problem is that theres very little replay value. The only reward you get for finishing the game quicker is some artwork, even on Hard thats all you get. Even in the old games you could unlock different suits. A new game+ wouldve helped. Once you're done with the game, theres very little reason to go back. I also wished that the game wasnt as linear but that's understandable given the focus on the story.

    The good:
Overall a very good game. The bad:
A little to linear, you never feel lost. The graphics is good but perhaps som cell-shaded 3D graphics would look better. Areas differ to little from each other in appearance.

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
