A fun retro-style side-scrolling shooter. Action is good, plenty of missions to complete either solo or co-op with up to 4 players, and crafting different guns with all sorts of properties keeps the game fresh. Game has a great soundtrack.

Performance is questionable for Nintendo Switch Lite, version I played. I don't know how this game plays on regular Switch, but with Switch Lite there is random stuttering which can screw your game big time if you are in combat with enemies and bosses.

Also, character sprites can bug out at random and show you something seizure inducing. Music also isn't safe from bugs. As you are in the main camp and interact with merchants, when you enter menus the music can die at random so you are left with awkward silence when moving around the hub.

I hope Tribute Games keeps doing their thing until the end of time, but this run-and-gun just didn't do it for me. [Issue #33 – May/June 2018, p. 19]

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded takes some serious steps to breathe new life into the gun-toting, fast-paced arcade shooter, resetting your expectations by adding RPG elements such as weapon crafting and loot drops into the mix. It's ambitious, but also sorely repetitious, lacking in mission variety and the kind of enemy AI needed to make the grind feel worthwhile. Blending genres has created a kind of mediocre middle ground, with the only truly exceptional aspect of the game being it's fantastic visual style. The vivid, gorgeous pixel art elevates the experience, as does the ability to jump into local or online co-op with ease, so if you're looking to temporarily swap your Bowgun for an AK-47, then this is definitely still worth a look.

A 2D action game with a frantic rhythm and a very striking and well-done visual aspect. It proposes many missions and possibilities but they get diluted over time after repeating the same stages and mechanics again and again. The multiplayer mode makes this shooting game's fun last longer by letting us play in co-op mode locally and online.
