Sep 6, 2019Even if you're not a Marvel fan and just want to play a simple beat 'em up with a few friends, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is certainly an enjoyable experience. Just don't expect it to be as mind-blowing as the films apparently are.
-
Game World Navigator MagazineOct 11, 2019Level design never rises above corridors and boxy rooms, and graphics are almost the same as they were ten years ago. On the other hand, there are a lot of various enemies to beat and secrets to find, so in the end, MUA3 still makes for a memorable adventure. [Issue#240, p.48]
-
Nintendo Force MagazineApr 28, 2020There's a lot holding this one back from being as fun as the MCU – but it is a fun game if you follow its parameters. [Issue #41 – September 2019, p. 70]

Aug 15, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a mighty callback that brings back a series that was an afterthought. It is a successful return for the series, boasting strong gameplay and an impressive and growing list of available heroes. There are a few missteps and annoyances, but these do not outweigh the positives features this game offers. The game shines when played with friends, but is perfectly fine as a single player action RPG romp. It is an easy game for Marvel fans to pick up and play, but is also enjoyable to those that might not be as familiar with the characters and settings.
-
Aug 14, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order shows that together is better. With more than thirty playable characters, there is a favorite for everyone. You fly through the levels, while keeping everything short and small. The game definitely gives you the feeling of being a superhero offering lots of spectacle on screen.
-
Aug 9, 2019Packed with fan service and with a huge amount to do, it’s difficult to dismiss Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. It can get repetitive, and the story does drag a little, but comic book and Marvel aficionados will enjoy it nonetheless.
-
Aug 7, 2019There is a lot to be said about the sheer amount of characters and being able to team them up together. Playing with friends is also much more enjoyable than flying solo, when it works properly. The upcoming DLC is exciting, the return of a mindless beat ‘em up feels good, and I just love a solid comic book title. I don’t think the price of admission is worth it in the end, but when this hits $30-$40 I definitely recommend it. There is plenty here for Marvel and non-Marvel fans to enjoy.
-
Aug 5, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order doesn't try to be more than it is, a fun romp with characters everyone has come to know over the past decade. While fighting with the camera can be frustrating at times, the game itself is extremely enjoyable especially if you’re a fan of Diablo-style RPGs. Additionally, it serves as a great stepping on point for anyone unfamiliar with the franchise and is accessible to any and all fans.
-
Aug 2, 2019We have waited a long time for another game in this series but what we got is a title that just plays safely. The number of heroes is vast and are plenty of amazing cinematics, but to many problems with simple basic enemies can ruin the fun. All in all, it's a great cooperative game for a bunch of friends to enjoy and have fun with.
-
Jul 31, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a solid beat-em-up that tops its predecessors, bringing all the colourful known and unknown facets of the Marvel universe together with gusto. But despite it’s strong art direction, potent replayability and often enjoyable combat, it still comes off as feeling rather basic.
-
Jul 30, 2019There’s plenty of enjoyment to be had just beating up baddies as Wolverine, Deadpool, Spider-Man, and co., but considering the 10-year wait, Marvel fans could be forgiven for wanting a little more.
-
Jul 29, 2019Sure the combat can feel a little repetitive or the difficulty uneven. Sure you’ll fight with the camera amongst the villains themselves but at the end of the day, these are problems that irritate rather than ruin your time spent playing. In essence, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is like the movie summer blockbusters it’s trying hard to imitate. It’s big, it’s silly, it’s sometimes shallow but every time I pick up the controller I’m always left entertained.
-
Jul 25, 2019A great idea...but one hampered by a poor camera and formulaic gameplay.
-
Jul 23, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order can best be summed up as average. It's neither bad nor exceptional. It's fun to play for Marvel fans and those who get giddy at the idea of Ant-Man fighting a giant Ultron-possessed robot or Ms. Marvel teaming up with Spider-Gwen. At the end of the day, the branding is about all that makes the game stand out. If you're not a die-hard Marvel fan, there isn't a lot here for you after the initial rush wears off from brutalizing baddies with the superheroes of your choice. The fun is still there, and in co-op, the game gains a lot more fun.
-
Jul 23, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is not a brilliant game, but that is okay. The game offers entertainment for everyone, because there are so many Marvel heroes to choose from.
-
Jul 21, 2019I’ll be honest: the single corridor thing keeps up for most of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. A ridiculous roster makes this one for Marvel fans; each hero and villain gets their moment in the spotlight as the overarching story plays out.
-
Jul 20, 2019If fans of the Marvel universe will find plenty of reasons to enjoy this experience, other players might frown at the game's occasionally lagging performance, its too simplistic combat system and lacklustre audio component, which is not to say this is not an enjoyable and interesting game.
-
Jul 19, 2019While Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is fun, I sometimes wished it pushed the envelope a bit more and tried something new. The game excels in multiplayer and playing your favourite characters from the Marvel Universe never gets old. Its combat is fun and gets better the more you upgrade your heroes. Its story is very cliche but that's expected. All in all its a fun pick up and play multiplayer brawler.
-
Jul 18, 2019Pick 'n Mix with super-heroes. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is the game Switch needs right now but not the one we deserves.
-
Jul 18, 2019The Ultimate Alliance comes roaring back with this Nintendo Switch exclusive. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 pulls inspiration for Marvel comics, movies, TV, and more to create an homage to the brand's long history. Unfortunately, some camera issues and general readability mar the overall experience, and the alternate costumes fall short of the Ultimate Alliance standard. Despite that, this is a great couch co-op adventure with all your Marvel favorites.
-
Jul 18, 2019At times Ultimate Alliance 3 becomes a little repetitive, but Team Ninja have crafted a likeable scrapper that sets out to entertain, and succeeds in doing just that.
-
Jul 18, 2019My time with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was filled with peaks and valleys. It has great moments where everything is clicking, followed by lulls where it all falls apart. The story never really gets going, however, but is a fun exploration of all things Marvel. For that, it delivers a little bit of fun, but this experience is all about the character reveals and getting to test them out, even if the worlds they explore and challenges within them often lack excitement.
-
Jul 18, 2019It succeeds most as a tribute to Marvel. Its giant roster offers a great variety of heroes. And while the gameplay is simple, it can still be satisfying with some cool cinematic moments and boss fights that I won’t spoil for you here. I think most people know what they’re going to get with this one: a simple Marvel-themed beat-’em-up game. Just don’t expect anything more than that.
-
Jul 18, 2019With the Marvel IP less muddled and the simplicity of this deal between Marvel and Nintendo, I'd love to see another with enhancements in tow.
-
Jul 18, 2019Overall, appreciable elements such as the ruolistic system and the amount of content make it a fun and smooth product, albeit conceptually repetitive and poorly finished.
-
Sep 9, 2019Despite being developed by one of the best action game studios in the business, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order falls short of its predecessors. Gameplay more often than not turns to button mashing monotony and is only briefly satisfying when playing with a new character.
-
Jul 30, 2019The simple synergy-focused combat can be fun with some friends, but Ultimate Alliance 3's padded plot proves pernicious for its diverse cast of wretchedly one-note characters. Add to that a campaign that's poorly paced and painfully inconsistent performance, and you're left with a repetitive and unexpectedly plain package that doesn't adequately justify the revival of a franchise.
-
Jul 26, 2019There’s a certain charm Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 has that will no doubt resonate with fans; it’s just too bad it’s put together in a less-than-optimal package.
-
Jul 25, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a standard, run-of-the-mill, hack and slash action RPG. Its shining moment squarely falls on the shoulders of its Infinity mode, with boss fights flying by in a close second. But its lack of polish and attention to detail means gameplay falls by the wayside, leaving a gaping, sore wound that no ultimate alliance can solely heal. Nothing more than a fun beat ‘em up that’s best played with friends, not CPUs.
-
Jul 25, 2019And that's what Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is about. Those moments of fandom where something happens just like you imagined it, or even better. Hulk and Venom side-by-side, Ghost Rider and Rocket Raccoon cracking wise. Each iconic location from the films and comics rejuvenates the game as the mechanics bog it down. There's so much potential for a great game here. If only the game wasn't in constant (Civil/Secret/you name it) War with itself, fighting against the fun with RPG nonsense. For now, we'll just have to find the fun ourselves.
-
Jul 24, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a budget reimagining of a fan-favourite series that fails to live up to the heights of that franchise. It plays and looks like a last-gen game, and it was a struggle to plow through the game, even for review purposes.
-
Jul 23, 2019Unless you're a fan of the comics, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 hasn't got much to offer. The gameplay is quite generic, the story is dull and the technical side of things is quite a let down.
-
Jul 22, 2019While it's shallow and has an overly narrow focus, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is good fun, and serves as excellent, entertaining fan service for the Marvel faithful. Get a group of friends together, and this is a glorious throwback to the days of couch co-op adventuring, with the development team even throwing in a camera that very nearly ruins the experience. That is true commitment to recapturing the essence of playing games from yesteryear, right there.
-
Jul 21, 2019The thing that I kept saying to myself when playing Ultimate Alliance 3 is that if this wasn't a Marvel game with such beloved characters and familiar story lines it would be a bad game. A great coat of paint does raise the average for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, but its roots are a rote beat 'em up that shows off all its tricks in the first couple of hours and wears out its welcome well before the credits roll.
-
Jul 19, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is both a fun adventure (especially in couch co-op mode) for fans of Marvel characters and a game that looks like it was made a couple hardware generations ago. While the game is clearly held back by its dated presentation, it has enough cool content to show a good time to fans of Marvel Characters both young and old.
-
Jul 18, 2019Shallow, stupid, and very repetitive but as long as you play with friends there’s a goofy charm to what is, for better or worse, the best Marvel team-up game in a long while.
-
Jul 18, 2019The Russo brothers have turned Marvel in to cinematic masterpieces. If you’re looking for a gaming equivalent, Ultimate Alliance 3 isn’t it, though that was never its intention. But if you’re looking to get your favourite heroes together to kick ass with friends then you’ll have a Hulk-smashing time.

Jul 18, 2019Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is, ultimately, just fine, but it feels like a last-gen game visually and in design. You can see it in every door you have to press a button to open, in every recycled enemy, in every spotlight you wait to pass, in every move-block-to-the-right-pad puzzle. Some of my colleagues said it reminded them of one of those late 2000s superhero MMOs, and I get that. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 launches 10 years after Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, but it feels like it could easily have come out just a year later, when the Xbox 360 and PS3 were still going strong. I suppose this is exactly what some had hoped for from the game, but I was hoping for a bit more.
-
Jul 18, 2019If an animated rehash of 10 years’ worth of movies and television is the framing needed to get me an action role-playing game as rich, challenging and satisfying as Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, then so be it.
-
Jul 24, 2019It feels rushed, incomplete, and woefully imbalanced...With more time to develop, this could have been something cool, but instead it requires a lot of legwork before it becomes slightly fun, and the effort's just not worth it.
-
Jul 19, 2019The Black Order isn’t the kind of game that breaks new ground with new and exciting elements. It’s more like comfort food. It’s neither perfect nor original, but it scratches a very particular itch and lets long-time Marvel fans live out a very specific fantasy. It might not make a lot of sense, but you can finally see how Venom will fight alongside Mile Morales. That’s good enough.
-
Aug 1, 2019When I got a group of friends together to play the game, however, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was a joy. Taking on challenging bosses with buddies, trading stories about our favorite heroes, and getting excited to try new characters as a group made it easier to accept the game’s flaws. As it turns out, this is a game that’s only as much fun as the people you’re playing with — so make sure to bring some teammates into battle with you.
