Fun to play with your friends.

Though, visually, the game can look confusing sometimes - at least when you are on local PvP. Because of that, it doesn't look so inviting to new players. So you have one friend only? No worry, Nintendo thought of you: If you play with one friends, you can't select 2 characters per players, so each player could have switch between _its_ two characters. The player switch is shared between players. Switching character select the character the closest to the ball. This means if both players switch at the same time, you are not really sure about which character you control.

Let me repeat this: If you play with a friend, in the speed of the game, character switching is unpredictable. And because of the speed of the game character switch is what make the difference between loose and win.

The only "workaround" is to let one single player to handle the character switching. Same for 3 players (but it's lesser a problem, I would say). We are talking about a Nintendo game. This is so dumb.

I could list all the other problems, but making basic game design flaws that no other indie football game will never have reveal the mess this game is.

Highway robbery. $60 for a Mario Strikers far worse than the original. My least favourite aspect is that you cannot pick your own team for online; you have to use teammates, usually random people, who are in your club. And if you got the game later? I just want to play Mario Soccer, but this game stands in your way at every turn. The gear is laughable, the roster hardly any more interesting than the original, and the item pool far less fun. It's so watered down. Nintendo has been half-assing it for a while now, but I've bought plastic cups for cheaper that have made a longer lasting impression than this game. This might be the worst installment of a sports game in a mario series. I sincerely hope they update it, because every time I waste $60 on Nintendo's garbage, I become $60 closer to snapping. Don't buy this game if you love yourself or love mario or love nintendo; it's a hogwash of underpaid developers meeting a quota, and the day this game dies or updates is the day the world can start healing. Do yourself a favour and spend $60 on gas or a lobotomy, because you'll probably have more fun :)

Also, *1* unlockable piece of gear? You spoil us Nintendo, truly. Truly, truly, truly.

Nintendo killed this game. After only six months they stopped updating it. They added 6 characters and a couple of maps that aren't much different than the maps already in game. Some parts are good though, the animations and gameplay can be fun. But its depressing to compare this game to the older titles. This was a missed opportunity.

It had so much charm, and I had fun playing Charged with my friend, however Battle Leauge (Football), WOOF! This one's beyond saving. It's overall controls are pretty solid however sometimes they don't nudge to press a button that might win you a round, but that's not Battle Leauge's fault. What IS Battle Leauge's fault though, is the lack of charm, or sidemodes. Take Super Mario Party for example, a good Switch game, had a handful of side modes to play when you were bored, and although not all of them are exactly novelties of top-tier game design and gameplay, there was always something to do. Here though, there are like, two? I'm not gonna even play the game to check. Like a lot of other Mario's Switch sports games, for example Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf: Super Rush and Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it has very few, or more occasionally no gimmick or mechanic that makes anything really worth coming back to, unless it's getting a damn trophy that the game requires you to get before your legs can move an inch further into a game. Overall, if you want a good football OR SOCCER experience in a game, get the previous Mario Strikers. They are fleshed out a lot better and don't have absolutely AWFUL AI in it. Expand

This game has nothing interesting to offer. It's a nerfed version of the GameCube version, even when it comes to it's uniques mechanics that made the series so fun.

    The horror:

    - The gameplay is slower, like transitioning from melee to brawl.
    - The controls are messed up. They tried to adapt the classic controller into the modern one, without understanding how the original worked in the first place. The GameCube/Wii one used the A button as the central button for passes and combos, letting you perform multiple deffensive and offensive strategies simultaneously. This one feels like a cheap version of the fifa games controls.
    - Tackling and sliding are mixed into one action, that needs to be charged in order to execute it. This just makes the game more predictable, slower and way less violent. - characters have stamina. Really? What's the point in making everything slower, this used to be a really fast paced game.
    - There are less items, that are simpler (no triple shells/bombs or random explosions, multiple bananas). They cannot be switched, and cannot be used for defending the ball. (Items always go forward, so if you have someone on your tail trying to tackle you, you cannot throw the item backwards)
    - items now come in boxes, that again, makes everything slower.
    - You cannot control the goalie
    - Hyper strikes are now a luck/chance event, which are really easy to pull of correctly. In the old days, super strikes were hard to pull off, and were used to humiliate your opponent whenever you had the chance. Now it's just annoying.
    - You cannot sabotage a hyper strike. There's no shaking the opponent's meter, or using a last minute tackle/item/explosion to prevent it. The turned the hyper strike into a random chance and very boring minigame with a really long animation that gets old real fast. - Characters stats are worthless, no significant upgrades except on strength tackling, whichs sucks.

    The bad:
    - Character selection and stats are very poor. It's pretty much the same gameplay with every character. - No single player content, other than unlocking perks and gear that do nothing. No cups or trophies, nothing. - No cups or tournament options when it comes to multiplayer, just "quick matches". If you play with 3 or more people, you need to manually keep track of the scores and matchmaking if you wanna do a tournament style gameplay.
    - CPU isn't really hard. It's like professional-superstar level on the original, or level 3 in charged. For an experienced Mario strikers player, the only challenge is overcoming the controls and limitations (such as defensive items and fast paced stealing, or lack thereof).
    - All stages feel and play the same, not even a difference in sound design.
    - There are no character themes like on charged, just generic rock bg themes.

Neutral: - The game doesn't keep track of the last used match settings, and takes a while to load between matches. Rematch screen puns were also removed.
    - Practice mode is time limited
    - No cheat system or unclockables of that kind.
    - Music is ok.

    The good:
    - You can manual toggle and control the characters that don't have the ball. This is very useful for doing one timer shots.
    - charging the ball has good potential, and feels smooth. Gives it somewhat a skill based gameplay an advantage. TL:DR Get the GameCube/Wii version. The GameCube one feels a little closer to this one (just a little).

Saying 10 characters, which is without free DLC, isn't a lot and the game is therefore bad is basically like saying your delicious ice-cream wasn't big enough and therefore it wasn't nice.

First the pros and the cons

    Pros,

    1. inventive gameplay

    2. customizable character stats

    3. level merging is kind of cool

    Cons

    1. visuals are very cluttered and un organized (hard to distinguish whos who on the field, needs player colors to return like smash bros OR THE OLDER MARIO STRIKERS)

2 Team AI never seems to be where they should be. (I've seen them countless times go everyway they shouldn't be and it usually results on the opposite team scoring)

    3. Difficulty spikes are pretty horrendous (though to be far its a mix unfair Skynet like AI and me sucking a bit so take that as you will)

    4. not enough content.

its very sickening because it feels as though Nintendo is taking they're fans for granted.
There's no story mode and only 10 characters at launch and they haven't addressed the complaints that have clearly been screamed by fans of this game.
compared to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl this game feels like a 35$ alpha test on steam.
I hate to say because there really is a great game here but there's way too much crap to dig threw to find it,
id say this game is worth 25$ at best and I cant even recommend it to anyone.
just spend your money on Mario tennis or golf, they have they're issues but they are leagues better them Mario Strikers Battle League, at least with those games you got a campaign as well as a few different multi-player options.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a let down from its previous game. The CPU is unfair and gameplay is mayhem to the point where I can’t even tell what is going on. The goalie is horrible but theirs is magically invincible. #BringBackKritter As of right now I would pay $30 not $60 for this game. I find myself more frustrated rather than enjoying the game during play. I hope the developers make the necessary fixes to this game as they need to. The game's graphics and animations may seem the only silver lining to this entry, the game feels incomplete in many ways, and even though it gets updates with characters every so often, it's not worth the price tag compared to its past entries. The score reflects what fun gameplay and little content the game still has.

The gameplay is tight and very fun, but the game is sadly let-down by a lack of content for single-player. A league mode would have added some longetivity. More charachters also would have been a bonus, but there are two more DLC updates reportedly coming before the end of 2022, so one can only hope.

But barebones experience that is incredibly lacking compared to the first two Mario Strikers games, with a lackluster roster, and NO single player mode and a severe lack of content. You can't believe that losing 4 captains, 7 sidekicks and replacing a very cool goalie (from a franchise that is slowly reduced to nothing by Nintendo itself) for a Mario's generic enemy is an advance with respect to the previous game for Wii.

So, why am I giving this such a low score? Read on & see why.

First off, the game has no content. It's you, the AI & Online mode. That's it. There are cup tournaments to play through but good luck with that, because the recent update has made the game 10x harder. Preupdate, I could manage 5-10 goals per match. Post update, sometimes I can't even manage 1 goal. Now, this would be fair enough if the AI didn't constantly cheat against you like it does, especially in Cup modes, even worse on Galactic mode. I get that Galactic is supposed to be the 'hard' mode, but they literally made 'easy' mode the real 'hard' mode since the update & now 'hard' has become 'impossible' mode. So yea, seriously, good luck beating the cups & earning those coins that you need to buy the gear that you need just to stand a chance.

Oh, yea that's another thing, you have to buy gear now with coins you earn, but the only decent way to earn those coins is by beating cup modes but you can't beat cup modes because they made it impossible so you can't get gear that you need to beat cup modes cause you can't beat cup modes. Hilarious, ain't it?

The whole coin earning thing is the real problem with this game. Once you beat a cup, you can't earn coins from it anymore, at least not the same amount. Normal cups give 400 coins when you win the 1st time. After? An abysmal 50. Yep, they decided to make those coins a 1 time payout, forcing you to grind, grind, grind in a friggen' soccer game. Each piece of gear costs 100-300 coins each & they are all separate between characters. That means, a piece of gear you get for Mario will not work for anyone else, even though it's pretty much the exact same piece of gear.

So, if you're like me & invested in 4 characters with a full set of 'Technique' gear, you are royally screwed. Know why? Cause they decided to nerf the technique stat with the newest update. HAHA! Good one, Nintendo. Ya got me. I spent $60 on your game only to have all that gold I spent be meaningless & now I can't earn any more gold cause you made the game 10x harder than it was when I bought it.

Well, F me, right? So, they give me the middle finger by ruining my game, I give them the middle finger by giving them a 0 on Metacritic, f'ing D-bags.

I had a lot of fun playing with friends, and playing against random opponents online was also fun. As expected, it’s a bit less entertaining playing against the AI.

However, the game really struggles with the content. This game feels just as bare as the Mario Gold and Mario Tennis games that came out for the Switch. It’s pretty clear they intend on adding more content as time goes on, but this makes me wonder - why? Surely this has to do with sales in some way, because it’s the third Mario sports game to do the same thing. The amount of characters, stages, and modes is extremely limited. Sometimes it feels as if this is a $20-30 game with the amount of content that is included. Unless you have a group of friends that you will regularly play this game with, it’s not going to hold your attention long. Nintendo made some very odd choices as well. They added a gear system to the game, which allows you to equip gear that changes the stats of your character. In a way, this is a good idea because it adds for variety in the characters you face. On the other hand, being able to customize the stats to such a huge extent on this limited of a roster makes you realize that almost all of the characters are exactly the same. That’s stupid and is not well thought out. The other major issue is that the AI can be pretty stupid. This could be remedied by allowing it to be a full eight player online (4 vs 4) matchup, however online can only be four players (2 per team). This limits the complexity of the gameplay, and makes you rely on the AI which makes really dumb mistakes or just locks into one position on the field, further limiting your attack.

It’s a decent game, but as with the other Mario sports games, the content is so limited that it hurts the experience and really prevents you from spending a lot of time on it. It’s a fun pick up and play a couple matches game, but I can see it collecting dust pretty quickly. I hope Nintendo figures it out, they are dropping the ball on games that could be fun for years. It’s a soulless effort.

    Nota: 7/10

The gameplay is solid, just like a Mario Strikers game should be. Every goal you score still feels satisfying as ever. But the cracks start to show with the amount of content in the game. Many of Nintendo's games have been plagued by a lack of content at launch and swiftly followed by a barrage of free updates with content that should've been in the base game. Battle League is no exception. The lackluster roster of ten characters isn't necessarily a bad thing, but many players including myself found it underwhelming. Where everyone begins to express their frustration is with Nintendo's "Save it for later" system. A game is launched with a lack of substantial content, and some content that makes more sense to be in the base game is saved for a later date to keep interest alive. The problem is that many players will have already moved on from the game by the time new characters, stages, and modes are added. While Mario Strikers: Battle League is a fun, harmless sports game, it's held back from its potential via Nintendo's panned modern video standards. I really wanted this game to be good, but I just found myself wanting more. Expand

Anyways, I freaking adore this game. The mechanics are very good and make you feel like wanting to play it again, unlike games like Rocket League and Fall Guys that make you go "Oh, this may just be THE game" then completely forget about it 5 seconds later. And in terms of online, it's way more balanced and there isn't just a meta of using Boo, and a lot of gimmicks from Charged have been reworked, and you can even customize your character. I KNOW D*m**ch is gonna see this and clown me because (Old game flawless, new game bad in every way), but whatever. The Galactic cups are very challenging and give off the same vibe as the Strikers Cups from Charged, which is VERY rewarding.

However, i'm only giving this game an 8/10 and not a 10/10 because I can't deny there are some issues with the game. The roster could have some more characters, especially to minimize the chances of there being dupe characters in online matches, the different terrain is a tad bit dull compared to the different stages with different gimmicks from the old Strikers games, and Boom Boom suddenly forgets how to be a goalie at times. However, those are not a big deal, and unlike D*m**ch i'm not gonna have an aneurysm just because a game made in 2022 isn't like it's predecessors from long ago.

So yes, I love the game, and yes, I acknowledge the problems the game has. But to D*m**ch and any of his fans watching this, that gives you absolutely NO right to tear down other people for simply finding enjoyment in a game instead of making 500000 rants videos with the exact same title just 2 slightly different words, with some cringeworthy ass PNG fighting scenes. Y'all are always about "Nintendrones not being able to respect opinions hurr durr" but switch up when it's an opinion YOU disagree with. Take a dang breather and stop getting all pissy because people dare enjoy a game in 2022 that isn't a complete replica of a game made all the way back in freaking 2007. That type of mob mentality is why the Nintendo fanbase is never taken seriously.

I am only giving it 2/10 because at least the gameplay is great and the graphics are good, but that is it. Everything else is lacking or is straight up worse than a game released 15 years ago. It is better to simply play Charged.

Mechanically fine and fun, but a lack of variety in modes, fields, characters, online options, and single player options. I had fun for an hour, then got bored and have only picked it up a few times since. A real disappointment and I would not recommend buying until all the DLC is released, but who knows when that will be or what it even is.

Everything is terrible except the graphics. And I mean everything. It's ridiculous. It will take me hours to write all the things they make wrong. The conclusion is, they were greety at level 100 and released the absolut minimum for a game to get people hyped (selling the name of the success of the older games) so they could get their money.

    Overall it’s a 5 out of 10.

Don’t buy in it’s current state.

Wait until Nintendo drops a vastly updated roster along the lines of Mario Tennis Aces and patches up the online.

This is definitely a game with tremendous potential. The problem is Nintendo can’t be interested in developing it.

At least Tennis Aces gameplay was improved over previous versions and some courts had hazards, this game is pretty much 1 stadium with absolutely zero variety, and in many ways has less interesting gameplay than the Wii version from 2007. Overall, extremely disappointed. I have been wanting Nintendo to make a new Sluggers game for years now as it’s my favorite Mario sports game, but at this point I rather them just port Supper Sluggers from Wii instead of them probably releasing a new game that is unfinished and content lacking. The core gameplay is clearly the focus here, and can be riveting under the right conditions. The amount of character that each of the cast exudes is wonderful, and the different cutscenes that play during matches showcase their expressiveness to a degree not usually seen. The talent in character animation from Next Level Games continues to be a highlight of their releases, and it's great to see that attention to detail given to each member of the roster. With that said, the rest of the experience could use some work. The single-player is quite simplistic and surprisingly poorly balanced. The online features don't have nearly enough options, and the timed league format is not implemented in a particularly compelling way. The gear customization options don't feel that impactful, and the cast in general is a bit too small. It seems that Next Level Games focused almost exclusively on the gameplay and character animation, while the other elements were left by the wayside. With that said, the gameplay is still quite enjoyable, so in some ways the title is a success. The issue is that the glue holding together the frantic matches together is thin, leaving the overall experience less complete than it should be. Expand

After a 15-year long gap between this and the previous entry Mario Strikers Charged which released for the Nintendo Wii, it was really exciting to finally be getting another game in this beloved series. After such a long wait, do I feel the game is as enjoyable as I had hoped? Or is it a disappointment in line with the previous few Mario Sports games?

Gameplay-Wise, I would give this game a 10 out of 10. The controls are fast and responsive and scoring goals feels really satisfying. The game is really technical and could potentially be tough for newcomers to master as a result but I thought it made the game really engaging once I finally got the hang of it. Luckily, the game has a very detailed training mode that explains all the game’s mechanics in-depth. The only issue is that the AI for the Boom Boom goalies feels a little unpolished. I sometimes find it too easy to score goals even though it didn’t make it any less satisfying. Perhaps the developers didn’t realise this and it could be patched in the future but as of now, no such patch has been announced. In addition, I really like the gear system. It really allowed me to change up my gameplay style however l saw fit making the game much more enjoyable, even though it made some characters a bit on the exploitable side making it almost impossible to win online matches without it. The graphics are also a huge plus keeping up with the amazing graphics from Luigi’s Mansion 3 also developed by Next Level Games. The character animations, while obviously not as over the top as the previous games, still had me laughing out loud with how expressive they were. Watching Toad launching into the air and head-butting the ball into the ground never gets old. Not to mention Donkey Kong’s amazing victory dance. And of course, Waluigi is just a beautiful work of art in every possible way. Unfortunately, there aren’t many animations for each character and chances are you will have seen most of them after just a few matches but they developers definitely went with quality over quantity. I also enjoyed the online play. While it is a pity you can’t play 4v4 with friends like you can offline, I still had a blast going up against random people and testing my skills. The online runs well too as I had no performance issues while playing and the game ran basically the same as it did offline. If online play isn’t your cup of tea however, the offline play is still enjoyable. The game allows for up to 8 players locally and offers several different customisation options for each match. There is even a tournament mode with several different themes. For instance, in one tournament you go up against teams with really high strength stats making them difficult to tackle whereas in another, you go up against teams with high technique stats. Beating these cups will earn you large amounts of coins which can be used to purchase new gear. You even unlock a harder difficulty after beating all the cups. While I did enjoy the tournament mode, I do wish there was a more robust single player campaign instead similar to those found in Mario Tennis Aces or Mario Golf Super Rush. It would also be nice if you could enter tournaments online. This ties into my biggest problem with the game being it’s amount of content.

Content-Wise, I would give this game a 7 out of 10. While the content we do have is great, I seriously wish there was more of it. I am well aware that there has been confirmation of more content coming to the game in the form of free updates however at the time of this review, none of said content has been announced or given a release window so the content included in said updates is currently unknown. As it stands now, the game only has 10 characters and 5 stadiums which is not terrible but it is the lowest the series has had yet. As mentioned earlier, I feel the game could greatly benefit from a more robust single player. Perhaps an adventure mode in which your chosen team leader and members have to journey across the world in order to become world champion football players. Obviously it could go deeper than that but I feel even a simple premise like that would make for an excellent story mode. Again, Next Level Games definitely prioritised quality over quantity and what we have currently is already great.

Overall, Mario Strikers Battle League is the most fun I’ve had with Mario Sports games in a very long time. The skilful, fast-paced gameplay and solid online are going to keep me coming back to the game often. All I hope for now is more of the same quality. I look forward to seeing what Next Level Games has in store for this game in the future. Overall Score: 8/10

All of the stages are the same. Nothing makes them different whatsoever but only by looks but is still really sad when compared to Charged which came out in 2007 and still holds up. The game doesn't feel fun at all and feels waaaaay too uncomfortable and complex. Has too many new complicated mechanics and the team tackle is hardly ever used. The new shooting mechanic sucks with the whole aiming with the left stick. I just don't like how they made that a thing in here and make it feel so bad. 10 characters only... and no sidekicks... The hyper orb should not have been a thing. There are no more special items that every character gets of their own. Edgyness has been toned down extremely. Charged shots suck now too. The new changed controls don't feel good either and it doesn't help the fact that we can't change the button layout. The character intros are soooo underwhelming. The stages are smaller in this game. They're purposely giving free DLC soon but it's just straight drip-feeding us content to "make the game last longer" but in reality that just makes consumers unhappy. There is no campaign and they decided to use "still cams" for the scenes in which they show the character's animations which makes it really really boring when in Charged they made it seem like they were actually being broadcasted making it really exciting. Don't get me wrong though, the animations and the looks of this game are so damn good but sadly, it's all very lacking in how much of it they actually made. I was extremely excited when this game was announced because I absolutely love the Strikers games and pre-ordered this game as soon as it was available. This game sadly did not live up to its name and what it is known for. Expand

I was really looking forward to Mario Strikers: Battle League, and for the most part it has been a worthy successor, but it’s a little hampered by the complexity of the gameplay. Even scoring goals can be a bit difficult overall. Soccer is definitely not known for high-scoring affairs but it is simply too difficult to score goals in the time allotted. This does seem to be different from what I remember in the previous games. It was a bit easier to score goals and that is definitely missed. There’s a balance that sports games need to strike, but Battle League does tend to be just a bit more difficult. Still, there is a lot to love about Mario Strikers: Battle League, but it almost made me want a remaster of the first two games more than anything.

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. In our memories, 'Super Mario strikers' on our Gamecube was the best of the best, unmatched and wonderful. Fair is not fair, as it sets the bar extremely high for 'Mario strikers battle league'. But there's more: this game feels like it's not quite finished.
