Nintendo seems to be throwing games out with little - to no effort. The only ppl that seem to be working hard at nintendo are their media and advertisements departments. Very disappointing…i gave this a 4/10 cuz yes it’s a mario soccer game… but you dont get anything else from it. Expand

Not sure why Nintendo has such a hard time with these sports games. The core gameplay is very solid, I can’t really find anything negative to say about the game itself. The core gameplay is very solid, I can’t really find anything negative to say about the game itself. It’s that perfect medium between simple and chaotic but technical and skill based. I had a lot of fun playing with friends, and playing against random opponents online was also fun. As expected, it’s a bit less entertaining playing against the AI.

However, the game really struggles with the content. This game feels just as bare as the Mario Gold and Mario Tennis games that came out for the Switch. It’s pretty clear they intend on adding more content as time goes on, but this makes me wonder - why? Surely this has to do with sales in some way, because it’s the third Mario sports game to do the same thing. The amount of characters, stages, and modes is extremely limited. Sometimes it feels as if this is a $20-30 game with the amount of content that is included. Unless you have a group of friends that you will regularly play this game with, it’s not going to hold your attention long. Nintendo made some very odd choices as well. They added a gear system to the game, which allows you to equip gear that changes the stats of your character. In a way, this is a good idea because it adds for variety in the characters you face. On the other hand, being able to customize the stats to such a huge extent on this limited of a roster makes you realize that almost all of the characters are exactly the same. That’s stupid and is not well thought out. The other major issue is that the AI can be pretty stupid. This could be remedied by allowing it to be a full eight player online (4 vs 4) matchup, however online can only be four players (2 per team). This limits the complexity of the gameplay, and makes you rely on the AI which makes really dumb mistakes or just locks into one position on the field, further limiting your attack.

It’s a decent game, but as with the other Mario sports games, the content is so limited that it hurts the experience and really prevents you from spending a lot of time on it. It’s a fun pick up and play a couple matches game, but I can see it collecting dust pretty quickly. I hope Nintendo figures it out, they are dropping the ball on games that could be fun for years. It’s a soulless effort.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wish I could say the game was just unplayable garbage, but in all honesty the core mechanics are very engaging and fun. It's just a very lackluster title.

    New features:

Mario Strikers Battle League excels with it's new ideas, which almost all revolve around the game's mechanics. The movement options feel fresh and genuinely like a significant amount of effort was put into them to keep the game interesting. One of my favorite moments in my experience was playing through the game's training courses because it explains how a lot the mechanics that seem random to new players are in the player's control based on a precise timing and a series of inputs. The new gear system is also a great addition that really makes your team building experience feel unique and tailored to your playstyle. That is about everything nice anyone can say about the game. Where Battle League Falls Short:

The amount of single player content is pathetic. I saw the staff credits in two hours, and the only unlockable content is a set of gear and a harder mode for the cups. Even when you beat the "galactic mode", you unlock nothing other than some coins, which you can use to buy gear. If you want to buy every piece of gear in the game like a true completionist, it will cost you 32,000 coins. To put that into perspective, winning an online match will reward you with 20 coins, so good luck earning 1,600 matches of coins without dying of boredom. Obviously, the online, being within a Nintendo service, is susceptible to lag; however, unless you have a friend paired with you or are willing to tolerate a random stranger who is probably playing on a joycon, you can literally get matched against up to four people, which isn't even remotely fair or fun for that matter. Once you're done with all the single player content, which is maybe 6 hours if you do do the training courses and all the cups (including Galactic Mode), this is all you can do, play the same exact mode either against friends or strangers. This isn't even remotely close to the amount of content the previous entries had. There's no milestones, no additional/unlockable settings, no unlockable characters or fields, and every field is exactly the same other than the aesthetics. There aren't any unique gimmicks that keep the fields fresh. It's just "oh that one looks cool I guess". Even with that, there are only five fields, so it feels about as repetitive as it gets. Every character has access to the same 6 sets of gear, which I think is enough, but the amount of characters is just... how? Mario Strikers on the Gamecube had 13 characters when you include sidekicks and Strikers Charged had 20. You would expect this game to have maybe 25. Maybe they'd go crazy and hit 30? No, there are 10 characters. All of the sidekicks have been cut and Toad has now earned his spot as a first-class citizen. This would've been a great opportunity to add really interesting characters like Pauline or King K. Rool. Maybe we'd get a rep that extends outside the Mario franchise. Instead, we can't even get an obvious character like Daisy. This game is simply an example of "it's evolving but backwards". I'm someone who appreciates all the intricate game mechanics, so it's extremely difficult for me to see how any casual player would view a game with this little content as an upgrade to the series, even after a wait of fifteen years.

    Presentation:

A lot of people said they stripped this game of its personality, and I partially agree. The game has become more of a Mario game and less of a Strikers game. I think the best example of this is the replacement of the Kritter goalies, which have now become Boom Boom. That being said, there's still a lot of Strikers left. The characters still have their own interesting personalities, the artstyle is still much of the same, and the soundtrack goes quite hard. I'm satisfied with what we got. It's amazing to me that Nintendo greenlit something like Strikers Charged fifteen years ago where Waluigi crotch chops after scoring and Wario tries to commit suicide with a Bob-omb after a tough loss, so I appreciate what we got.

    Final thoughts:

There's one mode I haven't commented on and that's ranked mode. Why? Because it's not available yet. I feel like when get a $60 game, you should be able to feel like you get the full experience on launch day. I don't care if ranked mode significantly improves the quality of the game in a week. There's no reason why anyone should not be able to write a full review of a full-priced game before waiting ten days after the game's launch. I have no faith in the future DLC updates either. Am I really supposed to get excited for a new character every two months or so when the game is already becoming stale after one weekend? This business practice is horrible. It's crazy that the biggest competition to Nintendo today is their retro games that actually have effort put into them.

You can only play with a max of 2 consoles online. I have 3 other friends with the game and we can't even play together. For a game that has basically zero story mode and is all online game play they really **** up the online modes. There is 4 characters per team but only 2 consoles are allowed to connect so the other 2 characters just get randomized. Me and friends will be returning the game.

It is a fun game, but it is a terrible value. The gameplay itself is solid, but the game lacks content. Most of the game will likely be played online since the game lacks single player content .

The online gameplay is very laggy, which ruins it since the game relies heavily on precise inputs.

    The game also lacks characters

It's a disgusting game. Goals are the same, matches are random, super shots for some reason give 2 points. Long-range shots are easier to score than point-blank shots. Two players just rape one player. **** mario kart boxes. Goalkeeper is just random garbage. Tactics in the game are zero, assists are unnecessary. Not much variability. Total **** don't buy this game.

There's no game here. It's a half baked soccer "idea" at best. You can't follow anything happening on the screen, you can't control the goalie, the AI spikes all over the place, and the tutorial is literally garbage, the tutorial doesn't even make sense in a few places. I've never felt ripped off by a Mario title, ever. I guess there's a first time for everything. This title is horrible.

The negatives, however, outweigh the positives since after you have played a dozen or so games you quickly realize there is nothing to do in the game! If you try and play online with your friends - that is capped at two players per game so you are stuck with the cpu for the other 2 players. There seems to be no way that I can find to control the goalie so you are often stuck with lackluster performance from the cpu. And, if you play locally there is nothing really to do as it is just the same cup over and over again. There is no story, no engagement, nothing to do in the game! Seems like something that would be released for $30-$40 USD as a party game. Definitely not a full $60 title!

In 5-6 days the leagues are going to start. Maybe that will fix the online play, but then again there is nothing in the game to keep me playing for the next 5-6 days so I will probably return the game to Gamefly and never look back.

Hopefully everyone else tries a rental before buying since it seems like it will only appeal to a very niche audience and for most people not worth the $60 asking price!

How could you have a Mario sports game today and not include her? Yes I know there are more coming later but that’s the problem. Nintendo will release their games unfinished and “fix it later” which is a disgusting strategy that they need to stop. There is only one stadium but you can change the background and they all look too similar and uninteresting. I personally do not like the character customization feature, since you can change your character’s stats and that is wrong since it defeats that whole purpose, and I think it’s just an excuse to have less characters. The core gameplay isn’t all that great and feels very cluttered. The character animations are quite charming and probably the best thing about this game, which is not good. The hyperstrikes are okay but I prefer the megastrikes from the previous game as they are more dramatic and satisfying. There aren’t any extra modes in this game which is a big part of what makes Mario sports games so fun. I would strongly recommend you do not buy this game at $60, and Nintendo is doing more to make me embarrassed to be a fan of them. Honestly, they should just hold off on baseball until they get new management. Expand

Oh boy is this list long.
The main problem is quite simple. The field is to small and the gameplay itself feels very unintuitive.
There are some cool mechanics, but you are not able to make use of them, because of these two main issues the game has.

On the higher difficulty this game gets only frustrating, the CPU will your characters tackle all over the place and it is nearly impossible to built up some game flow. The handling itself feels clunky and aged.

The customization of your characters does not have the effect you might think it have. I spent my earned coins to buy the gear parts and combine them, however the effect is too low and after some frustrating matches I went back to the standard and felt no difference.

The hyperkick animation becomes boring after a while because you can't skip them, especially when you not done it perfectly it gets really annoying.

The Gamecube version is on the gameplay site by far the superior game. You really don't need this game, when you are in possession of the Gamecube version.

Even the music which was such a high point previously is absent in battle league. The gameplay though is I think the worst sin of all. In charged you could score via sidekick special shots, mega strikes, simply using the charge mechanic to score with a heavy hitter, or even dodging over the goalie, there was so much creativity allowed in how you chose to play, and you could use it with how much space the field gave you. In battle league you shoot the ball or dump items to use a hyperstrike. It’s mind-numbingly repetitive. The field is tiny and cramped and allows for little to no strategy. I could be doing it wrong but to me it feels essentially up to chance if boom boom blocks a shot or not, it just feels unintuitive. Very disapointing. They removed 3/4 of the content from Charged, just polished the graphics and fps and called it a day. Hopefully future free dlc add WAY more content other than characters

Feels like a demo more than a complete game. Disappointed with the character roster and lack of field variety. Content is very little and game focuses too much online. Not a bad game but doesn’t compare to the first two Mario Strikers.

The gameplay is fun, but the potential and longevity of the game is severely hindered by the 2 console limit for online club games. I hope they plan on adding it, because the advertising was quite misleading.

Game is awful and got the EA treatment where they stripped game of functionality, removed characters made the local co op game play hard to understand where you are. This is such a disappointment I made an account just to review how awful it is. Do not support nintendos shady practices or they will just become another EA.

Great gameplay and visuals but really lacks in content. Only 10 characters, 5 arenas, and very few game modes. Instead of releasing content in the future it should come included for the $60 price point. Future content should include a lot more characters and arenas to play in. A game mode with penalty kicks would be fun to. 4 players on a team for online co-op should become a thing as well

Was a big fan of previous games in the series, but sadly this is a massive let down.
The sum of the offline content can be completed in a couple of hours. A day at a push if you're getting particularly frustrated by the badly tuned AI.
After that you have online only. In which you'll constantly have to leave and queue again if playing solo because the game thinks you want to play 1v2.

After that you have online only. In which you'll constantly have to leave and queue again if playing solo because the game thinks you want to play 1v2. When you do eventually get to play, it's close to identical teams due to the small roster. There's not enough to entertain for a long time once you realise it's just queue for the same matchup played the same way again and again for no reason other than a game at a time.
More content is allegedly coming via DLC but whether there'll be people waiting for it is questionable. It's kind of like a mobile game in reverse - where instead of hooking you with free, addictive gameplay to have you paying through the nose later for more content; instead the game mugs you in an alley for full sticker price, bores you quickly and wonders if it can lure you back with drip feeding at some unspecified point.
Good luck if you think you'll just pick it up later when there might be content - it's a competitive game at heart, but the lack of a real ladder/rating means any newcomer will get matched into what small community does stick with the game i.e. the hardcore.

I knew going in that the recent Mario sports games were somewhat light on content at launch, and I was even prepared for the same. But Battle League takes the "release now, finish later" philosophy way too far. Ten characters and five stadiums at launch is honestly just pathetic, the offline mode is almost non-existent, and the online is extremely limited. My friends and I were looking forward to 4v4 online matches so much. But guess what? That's not possible, for some reason. It makes me wonder what the point of the Club Mode even is if you can't play it with all of your friends, not to mention the trailers and advertising were pretty misleading but just vague enough to cover their butts legally. Overall, just a shame that they had to ruin an otherwise promising game. Drip-feeding one new character and stadium every few months just isn't going to cut it in 2022 when your content is this barren to start, and games from 25 years ago had more content than this. Does this have a campaign? Oh that's right, there isn't one. This is clearly another unfinished product by Nintendo. When I pay $60, I expect a top notch AAA quality game that is actually finished. That is exactly what this game lacks.

The graphics are a joke. It literally looks like a mobile game. The physics are terrible. The AI is incredibly stupid. The shadows are lazily designed in this game. It doesn't matter if it is daytime or nighttime, the shadows remain exactly the same. You can clearly see floodlights all over the stadium and it doesn't even have any effect on the shadows. Not even EA would be that cheap and lazy to not bother implementing accurate floodlight shadow effects. The customization is laughable. Lack of content. Toad is so underpowered. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this was supposed to be a soccer game. The "soccer field" is roughly the same size as a basketball court. That is pathetic and so is the gameplay mechanics.

The online multiplayer is complete trash. I was hyped to play 4v4 online with my friends, only to find out that I can't even play 4v4 online. Are you freaking kidding me? To make matters worse, you can't even spectate. It is insane to me that a masterpiece like Rocket League has 4v4 online, spectator mode, and a much larger field for free. That is biblical. Meanwhile, this game has none of that and the greedy developers had the audacity to charge $60 for this glorified Mario Party minigame. This outrageous greed infuriates me. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Less content than the previous 2 strikers. CPU is pretty cheap (opposing team goalie actually blocks most of the time, yours barely ever will). I've played all the cups and literally never got a single Starman. While playing the final cup the last opposing team got a Starman after every made shot and made 100 percent of shots taken. My team would walk away from items so the other team always got it. I either go for ball and lose items only to get pummeled by them or I go for item only for the opposing team to get a guaranteed shot because my goalie won't block it. The cpu isn't good or never gets any better. Your team is just dumb and the cpu who controls your team will leave man to man coverage so that the opposing team is always open and walk away from item drops too. My team cpu has literally been beside the hyper orb when it spawns and have actually walked away from it many times. In the cups it essentially always a 1 vs 7 with how much the cpu works against you. The cpu will also target the player controlled character when you are off ball as well. You could control the furthest character from the ball and the closest cpu controlled character to you will still throw items and takle you. Logically that doesn't make sense so it just seems like it was designed to agress the player even if the player is already in a state where they couldn't possibly be a threat. This is probably the worst and laziest attempt at a mario game I have ever played. And that's saying something considering you can lose every mini game in mario party and still win or vice versa and lose. Expand

Let's talk about the online. I see alot of people complain about splatoon2 because they "can't" play with their friends but there is battle league... There they can play as 2 and roflstomp any solo player. Let me explain : first, the 2 players win all the box. Secondary, one stand in front of opponent goal and the other just spam the perfect aerial passe so the solo player have 2 choices :
    - switching character to tackle the player in front of the goal then superstrike
    - or trying to chase the unstoppable perfect aerial passe leading to a goal
Let's talk about the club mode. You can't create your own club and join an another club. If you create your own club, you can customise the stadium but you won't have people joining you. Then in club mode, the match will be 1 character full geared with 3 random character with 0 gear and you will be facing full team geared. What's the point to unlock gear with solo content if you can't use it for the competitive mode? The solution is to subscribe to familial nintendo online and create 4 account to play club mode... This game is PAY-TO-WIN !!! They don't say it in their video or demo. If you join a club well... like animal crossing as 4 on 1 save you don't enjoying it. The online don't support 4vs4... wait... apparently you need 2 guys on 1 console + 2 on other console and you have to face 2 guys on 1 console + 2 other on an other console to do 4vs4 in online... 2022.
And final point. If you live in France or in Europe. You can't refund the game. The nintendo support say: learn to read bro!!! 1-8 mean idk anymore...

4v4 online is doable, but with a maximum of 2 players per Switch. Don't expect to invite 3 friends and play together. Ask one of your friend to brings its Switch, monitor, and RJ45 cable…

So you have one friend only? No worry, Nintendo thought of you: If you play with one friends, you can't select 2 characters per players, so each player could have switch between _its_ two characters. The player switch is shared between players. Switching character select the character the closest to the ball. This means if both players switch at the same time, you are not really sure about which character you control.

Let me repeat this: If you play with a friend, in the speed of the game, character switching is unpredictable. And because of the speed of the game character switch is what make the difference between loose and win.

The only "workaround" is to let one single player to handle the character switching. Same for 3 players (but it's lesser a problem, I would say). We are talking about a Nintendo game. This is so dumb.

I could list all the other problems, but making basic game design flaws that no other indie football game will never have reveal the mess this game is.

Just like any modern Mario spin off game: a couple of new features added, but everything else removed.

This game has nothing interesting to offer. It's a nerfed version of the GameCube version, even when it comes to it's uniques mechanics that made the series so fun.

    The horror:

    - The gameplay is slower, like transitioning from melee to brawl.
    - The controls are messed up. They tried to adapt the classic controller into the modern one, without understanding how the original worked in the first place. The GameCube/Wii one used the A button as the central button for passes and combos, letting you perform multiple deffensive and offensive strategies simultaneously. This one feels like a cheap version of the fifa games controls.
    - Tackling and sliding are mixed into one action, that needs to be charged in order to execute it. This just makes the game more predictable, slower and way less violent. - characters have stamina. Really? What's the point in making everything slower, this used to be a really fast paced game.
    - There are less items, that are simpler (no triple shells/bombs or random explosions, multiple bananas). They cannot be switched, and cannot be used for defending the ball. (Items always go forward, so if you have someone on your tail trying to tackle you, you cannot throw the item backwards)
    - items now come in boxes, that again, makes everything slower.
    - You cannot control the goalie
    - Hyper strikes are now a luck/chance event, which are really easy to pull of correctly. In the old days, super strikes were hard to pull off, and were used to humiliate your opponent whenever you had the chance. Now it's just annoying.
    - You cannot sabotage a hyper strike. There's no shaking the opponent's meter, or using a last minute tackle/item/explosion to prevent it. The turned the hyper strike into a random chance and very boring minigame with a really long animation that gets old real fast. - Characters stats are worthless, no significant upgrades except on strength tackling, whichs sucks.

    The bad:
    - Character selection and stats are very poor. It's pretty much the same gameplay with every character. - No single player content, other than unlocking perks and gear that do nothing. No cups or trophies, nothing. - No cups or tournament options when it comes to multiplayer, just "quick matches". If you play with 3 or more people, you need to manually keep track of the scores and matchmaking if you wanna do a tournament style gameplay.
    - CPU isn't really hard. It's like professional-superstar level on the original, or level 3 in charged. For an experienced Mario strikers player, the only challenge is overcoming the controls and limitations (such as defensive items and fast paced stealing, or lack thereof).
    - All stages feel and play the same, not even a difference in sound design.
    - There are no character themes like on charged, just generic rock bg themes.

Neutral: - The game doesn't keep track of the last used match settings, and takes a while to load between matches. Rematch screen puns were also removed.
    - Practice mode is time limited
    - No cheat system or unclockables of that kind.
    - Music is ok.

    The good:
    - You can manual toggle and control the characters that don't have the ball. This is very useful for doing one timer shots.
    - charging the ball has good potential, and feels smooth. Gives it somewhat a skill based gameplay an advantage. TL:DR Get the GameCube/Wii version. The GameCube one feels a little closer to this one (just a little).

Would only recommend picking this game up if you have friends to play with all the time. Otherwise, I'm probably going to re-buy it down the road once there's some patches or a sale.

AI of otherside is **** strong but my team AI is trash. Moreover, no content at all. No story and only 10 characters. Wasted my money

Annoying gameplay, small fields, and very few characters. It would also have been great if you could assign your team's positions like the previous one.

so like a lot of fans of this game series i bought this game.
I should have listened to the signs this game was going to be a bust.
I was too blinded for my love of the franchise too see al the writing on the walls. First the pros and the cons Pros, 1. inventive gameplay 2. customizable character stats 3. level merging is kind of cool Cons 1. visuals are very cluttered

First the pros and the cons

    Pros,

    1. inventive gameplay

    2. customizable character stats

    3. level merging is kind of cool

    Cons

    1. visuals are very cluttered and un organized (hard to distinguish whos who on the field, needs player colors to return like smash bros OR THE OLDER MARIO STRIKERS)

2 Team AI never seems to be where they should be. (I've seen them countless times go everyway they shouldn't be and it usually results on the opposite team scoring)

    3. Difficulty spikes are pretty horrendous (though to be far its a mix unfair Skynet like AI and me sucking a bit so take that as you will)

    4. not enough content.

its very sickening because it feels as though Nintendo is taking they're fans for granted.
There's no story mode and only 10 characters at launch and they haven't addressed the complaints that have clearly been screamed by fans of this game.
compared to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl this game feels like a 35$ alpha test on steam.
I hate to say because there really is a great game here but there's way too much crap to dig threw to find it,
id say this game is worth 25$ at best and I cant even recommend it to anyone.
just spend your money on Mario tennis or golf, they have they're issues but they are leagues better them Mario Strikers Battle League, at least with those games you got a campaign as well as a few different multi-player options.
Plus Mario Golf is pretty amusing with motion controls.

Soccer/football games were always games I would just get as a collectionist, then only pull them out of the dusty shelf to use as a stool to reach the top of my cupboard, but Mario Strikers had something special in it. It had so much charm, and I had fun playing Charged with my friend, however Battle Leauge (Football), WOOF! This one's beyond saving. It's overall controls are pretty solid however sometimes they don't nudge to press a button that might win you a round, but that's not Battle Leauge's fault. What IS Battle Leauge's fault though, is the lack of charm, or sidemodes. Take Super Mario Party for example, a good Switch game, had a handful of side modes to play when you were bored, and although not all of them are exactly novelties of top-tier game design and gameplay, there was always something to do. Here though, there are like, two? I'm not gonna even play the game to check. Like a lot of other Mario's Switch sports games, for example Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf: Super Rush and Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it has very few, or more occasionally no gimmick or mechanic that makes anything really worth coming back to, unless it's getting a damn trophy that the game requires you to get before your legs can move an inch further into a game. Overall, if you want a good football OR SOCCER experience in a game, get the previous Mario Strikers. They are fleshed out a lot better and don't have absolutely AWFUL AI in it. Expand

Fan of the first hour of this license, I was so happy to get a new version on switch. I bought it right on the release. But what a dispointement! It is my worst buy of 2022. The game has just come on a point of no fun, all the mechanic that was great on the lasts games are away. I had to sell it only 1 week after buying it! Save you money and your time, don’t buy it

Nintendo killed this game. After only six months they stopped updating it. They added 6 characters and a couple of maps that aren't much different than the maps already in game. Some parts are good though, the animations and gameplay can be fun. But its depressing to compare this game to the older titles. This was a missed opportunity.

Highway robbery. $60 for a Mario Strikers far worse than the original. My least favourite aspect is that you cannot pick your own team for online; you have to use teammates, usually random people, who are in your club. And if you got the game later? Good luck finding people to join who have characters you want to play in online. You're at a huge disadvantage every time. I just want to play Mario Soccer, but this game stands in your way at every turn. The gear is laughable, the roster hardly any more interesting than the original, and the item pool far less fun. It's so watered down. Nintendo has been half-assing it for a while now, but I've bought plastic cups for cheaper that have made a longer lasting impression than this game. This might be the worst installment of a sports game in a mario series. I sincerely hope they update it, because every time I waste $60 on Nintendo's garbage, I become $60 closer to snapping. Don't buy this game if you love yourself or love mario or love nintendo; it's a hogwash of underpaid developers meeting a quota, and the day this game dies or updates is the day the world can start healing. Do yourself a favour and spend $60 on gas or a lobotomy, because you'll probably have more fun :)

Also, *1* unlockable piece of gear? You spoil us Nintendo, truly. Truly, truly, truly.

Disgustingly shallow not worthy of more than 20 bucks spend, only buy it for the little fun it can have with co-op.

It's a great game if you don't want to play too long against a pretty erratic AI. It's disappointing to not be able to control the goalie as well. The online features are excellent. Plus there's the promise of an expanding range of available Nintendo characters for free. A perfect choice for parties. [Issue#320]

I was really looking forward to Mario Strikers: Battle League, and for the most part it has been a worthy successor, but it’s a little hampered by the complexity of the gameplay. Even scoring goals can be a bit difficult overall. Soccer is definitely not known for high-scoring affairs but it is simply too difficult to score goals in the time allotted. This does seem to be different from what I remember in the previous games. It was a bit easier to score goals and that is definitely missed. There’s a balance that sports games need to strike, but Battle League does tend to be just a bit more difficult. Still, there is a lot to love about Mario Strikers: Battle League, but it almost made me want a remaster of the first two games more than anything.

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. In our memories, 'Super Mario strikers' on our Gamecube was the best of the best, unmatched and wonderful. Fair is not fair, as it sets the bar extremely high for 'Mario strikers battle league'. But there's more: this game feels like it's not quite finished.
