I bought it expecting a cute-em-up along the lines of Cotton or Magical Chase. Only when I start it up do I realize that it's basically a Flappy Bird clone with controls that make the game borderline unplayable. It's very clear this was ported directly from mobile, without any care to adjust the controls or the menu layout. There were several times where I was stuck on a menu, pressing every single button and wondering why nothing was happening, only to realize that there was a hand cursor I had to drag around and click on buttons with (using the RIGHT analog stick). Talk about asinine! It's especially ridiculous considering that the Switch has a touch screen on it, why not use it? In any case, you probably won't spend enough time with this game to figure it out anyway because the controls are so frustrating and the gameplay so dull. If I knew what kind of game this was I never would have spent $5 on it (which is a full dollar more than iOS. Again, why?). Nintendo needs to implement a refund system for the eShop so people won't get tricked into buying shovelware crap like this with no way to get their money back. Expand

I have never played a game as awful as this one. For a good $5 on the Nintendo eShop, it may be a cheap price but the game feels more like 50¢ than $5. This was (sadly) the first game I played on my Nintendo Switch when I got it December 2017 and I was attracted to the visuals and the art style the game had. Let’s just say that’s all the game had going for it.

While the premise of the game was simple and easy to understand, the controls were the opposite. It looked like the kind of game that would be like a mobile game so I expected touchscreen controls when not in docked mode, but in all modes - it’s this weird control scheme that was hard to understand. While games like Mario Odyssey had easy to pick up controls, this game had me going back again and again to the tutorial just to even understand this control scheme.

Then there’s the gameplay itself that I can’t even get started on how bad it is. While the idea sounds good on paper, flying around on a broom collecting letters while avoiding obstacles — it wasn’t good in practice when playing with the control scheme mentioned in the paragraph above. It was hard to control Maria while on her broom, going every which way besides the one that you wanted to go. The most gameplay I got out of this was hitting things and having to click the retry button!

While I luckily have gotten and played games on my Switch better and actually playable than this one, I still cannot shake how terrible this game is. I picked it up again recently hoping my opinion would change and yet it stayed the same. 1/10

Maria the Witch has one superficial element in its defence, which is a rather pleasant visual outlook...and that's it. Beyond this, the game's appalling controls and mechanics make it impossible to recommend to anyone at all and it features no redeeming factors whatsoever.

While Maria the Witch seems slightly more complicated than your typical game, a better button outlay may have made it a lot less frustrating. I just wanted to be in control, or to feel in control, of Maria far more than I did. Now to go and lie down before I have nightmares of flying my broomstick into yet another wall...

Cute visuals can't prevent Maria the Witch from being anything other than an incredibly lazy port of an already mediocre and generic mobile clone. A derivative, boring and regularly frustrating experience that has had no care applied in bringing it to Nintendo Switch. The laborious gameplay and obtuse controls, combined with bland, uninspired level design and by-the-numbers progression, reduce it to being one of the most disposable titles on the system. Don't let the admittedly pleasant art style fool you - Maria the Witch really isn't worth taking for a spin.
