As a newly appointed captain of the Pegasus corporation, you must guide a roster of colorful pilots, eclectic advisors and state-of-the-art landers through a taxing series of missions.

When a mysterious portal appears, leading to a strange, unexplored planet, you will find you are on a collision course with some sinister truths that lie unseen behind the universe. Poor flying and fatigue will stress your pilots, and can lead to sensory illusions ... the bane of long-haul solo pilots. They may start to see things that may not be real - is that a mine or a fish? And what's with those celestial pink elephants?!

With multiple pilots, four ships and a dozen upgrades to collect, you can get the job done if you can manage it all ... if not, the stakes are high, and not just for your career.

I really enjoyed my time with Lunar Lander Beyond. Even if you’re not a huge fan of the original Lunar Lander, this follow-up takes everything to another level. While I was impressed by some of the new systems and rogue elements, the difficulty spikes and sometimes cluttered artwork kept it from a perfect score. But if you don’t mind a challenging and relatively short sci-fi romp, I’d check it out.

Lunar Lander Beyond is a solid recommendation for fans of the lander sim genre. It performs well on the Switch with no discernible frame rate issues and looks great. But as it stands, its missions too often feel abbreviated at around three to six minutes and too tightly sandwiched between narrative. The issue is not its gameplay mechanics, but the strictures of its campaign structure. It’s a problem the developers could solve by staying the course and creating a mode focused squarely on what made the original compelling: flying, landing, and scoring better than everyone else.

Lunar Lander Beyond is… fine. I wish I could say it’s more than that, or that it has the capacity to do more than preach to the Atari choir, but I don’t think it’s quite there. Some of its attempts to add some complexity to the concept don’t really click, and while the graphics and sound are pretty good, it feels like the core gameplay can’t fully live up to the level of ambition seen in other aspects. Still, if you have the requisite fondness for Atari and/or thrust-based spaceship games, you’ll likely enjoy your time with this well enough.

Lunar Lander Beyond is an extremely difficult arcade action game aimed squarely at those who prefer a steep (and I would argue unfair) challenge. OK. The problem is that, aside from some great design work, that challenge is pretty much all it offers.

Lunar Lander Beyond struggles to entertain and engage the player, mostly due to the fact that the core and base gameplay feels outdated and sluggish. While we can all thank Lunar Lander for being the predecessor to Asteroids, in the year 2024 that unfortunately doesn't make me want to play or dive back into this game any more.
