LumenTale: Memories of Trey is an amazing debut from a budding studio, using familiar elements to create a refined, fresh take on the creature-collector genre. It confidently integrates an intricate 4v4 battle system centered on team synergy and RPG mechanics such as consequential choices and crafting recipes. The depth of its world and boundless potential for team comp mix-and-matches in repeated playthroughs are outstanding, despite being held back by a relatively generic narrative. Still, it distinguishes itself as a worthwhile monster tamer that will surely surpass modest expectations.

LumenTale: Memories of Trey may have a few quirks on the Switch, but I like Beehive Studios’ take on the Pokemon concept. The combat system is solid and encourages you to think about every character’s moveset. The character design is great. I love that it offers its own take on Secret Bases. The mystery behind what’s going on with Trey and the world can be pretty interesting too. A few minor issues aside, it’s an interesting addition to the monster taming and training genre.

LumenTale: Memories of Trey offers a fresh twist on the monster-catching and battling formula. Despite a somewhat shallow story, the characters, branching paths, unique battle style, and creative Animon designs make this a worthwhile experience.

While yet another take on the monster training subgenre, it does manage to differentiate itself, even if not clearly exceeding its peers.

Beehive Studios has created a monster-collecting game that, while clearly inspired by Pokémon, manages to forge its own identity thanks to an excellent combat system, a more mature narrative, and a well-developed game world. Despite a few flaws likely due to the team’s inexperience, LumenTale: Memories of Trey is an engaging title and offers a solid alternative for anyone looking for something different from Game Freak’s games.

LumenTale: Memories of Trey is among the best creature collector games we've gotten in years. That doesn't stop the game from feeling like it's collapsing under the pressure of just how different it's trying to be. Whether it's bug issues or performance issues, the game just reaches a point where it feels like work to play. There are a lot of genuinely great ideas here, and hopefully, things can get ironed out to be an experience that everyone on any platform can enjoy. If you enjoy creature collector games and want one that's going to be hours upon hours of learning and fun, then this one is for you.

Lumentale: Memories of Trey is a solid attempt at crafting a distinct Pokémon-like experience—one that is more challenging and features a slightly more mature narrative than the usual fare.

With some improvements, Lumen Tale: Memories of Trey could be a stellar game. As it stands, it falls in the good but not great area. Pokémon fans may find it’s arguably worth the price tag, but the battle and capture mechanics fetter the fun.

When everything works in harmony, LumenTale: Memories of Trey’s mature twist on the monster-taming genre feels like a genius blend of fan-favourite mechanics alongside smart and refreshing advancements. I hope either updates or a future entry can help evolve things further, as currently both LumenTale and some of the Animon themselves feel buried in a mess of ill-explained and superfluous features. Performance woes frustrate the experience further, alongside some odd control decisions, but any RPG fan looking for a monster-tamer built with clear passion and understanding of the genre's strengths should definitely give this a spin. There’s potential here for LumenTale to actually challenge the very best monster-tamers out there, and I hope Beehive gets the chance to make that happen.

  1. Lumentale is frustrating because I feel like there is a ton of potential here. This is clearly made with a lot of love for the genre, and there are interesting ideas. I want to love this game. But there are so many glaring flaws in how it’s constructed that, if I wasn’t reviewing this game, those would have been enough for me to exit out right then and there. I could easily see a sequel or similar title by this developer being one of my favorite games, but with all the issues this ended up being a rough experience. I’m going to keep trying to play more of this, and since I didn’t come close to an ending I don’t feel like I can honestly give this a score, but I feel like this game is constantly pushing back at me getting to that point.
