Little Big Adventure: Twinsen’s Quest tries to revive old PC nostalgia, but gets lost between the outdated mechanics of the original and the insufficiently modernized approach of the new version. While it’s clear that the remake was made with love, the final result will likely struggle to find its place among old fans, and even more so among new players.

We don't know if this was the remake the team had in mind but we question who this title is aimed at. Maybe the users who played it in 1994? Or newcomers? We would say old players, but how many were actually so bewitched at the time that they rushed to spend €30 and replay this game today? Little Big Adventure: Twinsen's Quest isn't bad, it's just that it's difficult to recommend it to those who don't live on bouts of ‘90s nostalgia, as it clearly has structural limitations and the flow of advancement isn't particularly fun, however good the graphical style is. However, it is a niche cult game that will enrich your gaming culture, especially if you are thirsty for European gaming histories and biographies.

I no longer feel like I missed something when I gave up on the original as a kid. The streamlined controls got me further than I ever did in the 90s, but all to be found was tedium. The remake does little to liven it up, but at least there’s some crude entertainment in marveling at how shockingly buggy it is. It serves neither as a polished update nor an impressive reinvention, and confirms more than anything that Little Big Adventure is best experienced by watching a Longplay of the bloody thing.

Little Big Adventure was always a charming and eccentric game. In modernising it, 2.21 had to ditch the trademark control scheme and revamp the wonderful isometric graphics – two major selling points. What remains is still charismatic, but bugs and a general lack of polish hold it back. Both for new players and for original fans, this is a quirky adventure game – but not one that will be remembered for another 30 years.
