Really great game though, if you're looking for another open world that isn't Hyrule then this is well work checking out.

Yea, the game looks quite cool and I like the basic humor, but thats pretty much it. The framerate in this game is absolutely unacceptable. In undocked mode it happens quite regularly, that the game drops to 15fps and lower, making it basically unplayable. Do not buy!

A very well crafted, exploration heavy RPG. The game is full of silliness, humour and pop culture references. There is a very high degree of attention to detail which will delighted me throughout. The plot keeps getting crazier as it progresses, but that's in keeping with the overall silly tone of the same.

I really enjoyed my time playing Lego City Undercover. It feels like GTA and the Lego video game franchise had a baby. Also, since you are a police officer, you have a few gadgets to use to help you solve crimes and catch the bad guys. From a scanner that lets you ID criminals, to a grappling hook that helps you scale tall buildings, there are some really fun mechanics in this game. In addition to the new mechanics, the old Lego standby of smashing legos and rebuilding them into something useful has returned. There is something cathartic about smashing things to pieces and collecting the legos that fly all over the place! Since it's an open world, they needed to give us ways to get around, and it's a great feeling hopping in a car and exploring the city. If you would rather not drive, you can always hail a taxi to get to your destination. The Lego humor is here, and I found myself smiling frequently during my time with this game. I was impressed at how they managed to include overt jokes for children, with subtle references and jokes aimed at adults as well. Before buying this game, I had read some reviews that complained about performance, but I haven't noticed any large hiccups as of yet, and I have played quite a bit. It it supposed to be worst during co-op play, but I haven't had a chance to play co-op so I can't comment on that. The other complaint I read about was the load times. Yes, there are loading screens that appear, but they aren't terribly long. They mostly tend to occur when you enter one of the story missions. This is because many of the missions take place in separate instances designed specifically for that mission. When I was tackling the missions that take place in the open world city, I did not see a load screen beforehand. All in all, Lego City Undercover is a great addition to the Switch library, and if you are a fan of the series, you will have a blast playing it. At the current price, you really can't go wrong! Another annoyance: after a few events had occured the game froze, after which I had to do everything all over again. The missions in this game consist of what would be several seperate missions in other games (questionable choice; should have inter-mission saves in that case.

Also very annoying: I kinda half fell of a dock in the game, but not in the water directly. Because of this the game kept respawning me to a location from which I couldn't get to the safety of land, and so I was eaten by a Lego shark at least ten times before I figured I'd be better of fast traveling out of there, therby cancelling any game progress.

Outside of these issues that I wouldn't mexpect from a four year old game, there's plenty positives as well. So far the sense of humor in the game is great. There's a lot off funny references, funny characters, and as a lego game it's very lighthearted which I really like.

I'm rating it a four because this is on Switch, and it not working properly in undocked mode means you only get half of what you've payed for. Unless you only like undocked mode, in which case you basically get nothing at all. If they fix undocked it'd be about an 8. If they fix all above mentioned issues and make car control better, it'd be a ten.

The concept behind the game is fantastic, but the execution is half assed at this point. I really hope they fix it soon!

There are occasional 3D platforming skills needed. It's basically a parody of cop movies. The locations keep changing, the dialogue is funny and it's not hard, so it's amusing. The missions can feel pretty long, however. There were also a few bugs, like during the first chase where I couldn't steer until I reset the mission manually.

    Pros
    • Fun game with funny dialogue

    • Fun to play lego and destroy things

    • Sometimes the Switch struggles to keep up (choppy)

    • So automatic that you rely on it knowing what you are trying to do

I love how the game doesn't take itself or the plot seriously by making fun of itself and making a parody of cop movies which makes it a more lighthearted and positive experience all the way through. The voice acting and cutscenes are also a welcome addition as they add more to the experience with an interesting story and funny plot.

The graphics tbh are a little underwhelming for me for a 2017 game on Switch, even in 2012 the graphics could've done a little bit of work. The lighting is poor as it looks like an early Xbox 360 game at times. Its draw distance is very limited be with the game looking very blurry looking long distances, and a slightly higher resolution would've been welcome. I know that this game has huge open-world with a lot of NPCs and buildings which makes it difficult to run the game at an amazing graphical fidelity and performance. However, we've seen other open-world games look noticeably better than this game like GTA 5, skyrim, and others and these were 7th gen games on the Xbox 360 and PS3 when Lego City was made for the more powerful Wii U and ported over again to the even more powerful Switch. While I wasn't exactly expectating Lego City to look as good asGTA 5 in terms of graphical fidelity since Lego City had a more limited budget, I think they could've definitely optimized the game more to have better lighting and resolution especially on Switch, which are my two main problems with the graphics. You'll also run some performance issues where the game occasionally stutters below 30fps during busy scenes, while for the most part it is still playable, these stutters definitely look disgusting to the eyes when they do happen. However, this performance problem is far worse in the 2 player mode where it legitimately looks like the game struggles to stay at 30 and mainly hovers around the upper 20s. I'd say its still a playable game in this form, but that frame rate in 2 player mode hurts my eyes at times. Overall, id say the graphics are right around average but could've been a lot better.

In terms of the music, there isn't a ton of music in this game and a lot of it is reused in during missions however I'll say its pretty good. Not like Mario Galaxy type legendary of course but there are some good tracks here and there.

As for the game itself, I really love how open and big the world is, it is like Lego GTA essentially without the killing and some of the grittiness found in GTA. It is just fun to just explore and drive around this world and do whatever you want anywhere, you could destroy cars , fly helicopters, and there are a ton of collectables in the world so there is a lot to do. If you want a child friendly type of GTA game or a GTA replacement on Switch, Lego City is definitely a great choice for that.

In terms of the actual story mode and missions themselves, to me I'm being honest it felt incredibly meh to me. It isn't horrible yet i wouldn't call it anything great or either, the story mode feels average to me. In the missions it primarily consists of exploring for items to advance and solving some simple puzzles, which is somewhat enjoyable and satisfying to find something to advance or solve a puzzle through exploration which is the main thing I do enjoy about the missions. However, my main problem with the story mode is how easy and generic the actual missions are, there isn't much interesting gameplay outside the occasional puzzle solving or exploration and very little challenge. Platforming is very easy and simple which takes little to no skill at all to accomplish, the enemies are so easy to beat where all you need to do is spam press one button to arrest them with no complex dodging or other strategy required, and there is literally no penalty for dying with no game overs or lives that would make the game more of a challenge. Literally when you die you just lose Legos and respawn at the exact same point, and you could do that the entire time. For a kid this gameplay might be fine and encouraging for them since they don't need to have much skill to beat these missions. However, playing this as an adult the gameplay is feels too generic and easy most of the time. While I still do enjoy the story mode as a decent chill type of game where it encourages you to explore to solve puzzles, i feel like it fall shorts of being anything great and the story mode could've been much better.

Also, Switching between costumes to unlock certain stuff is incredibly annoying.

But overall I'll say this game is good, great story and world, good music and I guess a decent story mode, but falls short in the gameplay department.

    Though!

After giving this review i played it through and its a really entertaining puzzle type open world of a game, though i wish there was a hard mode or something where it doesn't hold your hand through the whole story and makes you figure things out for yourself.

And i don't know if it is that I've grown used to it or if it have gotten better but the frame drops seems to be less than when i started playing the game.

Also after finishing the story the game started to crash. Ive played about 20 Hrs without crashes and 7 hrs with about 8-9 software crashes.

    The bad

    FPS Drops
Locked crazy annoying camera angles in some areas
    The outrageous price
    Crashes

    The good:

Fun story with a lot of fun references to games and movies
Multiplayer is a blast even with the poor fps

    Verdict:

Dont buy this game if you're not a big lego fan, until they hopefully adress the fps and optimisation problems in future updates and drop the price.

But LEGO City Undercover is easily my favorite one to date
The charm and humor here is the best I’ve seen in a Lego game, which is surprising considering it features a unique cast of characters..
A few parodies thrown in there…
But there wasn’t 1 character I met throughout the journey that didn’t make me smile in one way or another…
I was in love with the first half of this 12 hour campaign…
You’re driving around the Lego city to each destination, stopping along your way to collect new costumes, or cars from doing time trials if you’d like… destroying and rebuilding during the campaign to complete tasks and find keys…
And slowly you’re introduced to different undercover identities…
This is where the games potential starts to shine, but it’s also where the game starts to fall apart…
There are 15 chapters in total here and the missions in these chapters are mixed between in city with car chases and climbing buildings and then there’s the sections of the game that are inside of buildings…
And this is where the game comes to a crawl.. Especially later on in the world...
For starters... this is where you have to deal with the slow and boring combat system of reversing, mashing the o button and throwing handcuffs on enemies..
It’s a little fun for a while, but gets old pretty fast…
At first I don’t mind these more puzzle platformer sections of the game...
They’re a break from the fairly small Lego world...
This stops that world from getting boring…
And it extends playtime as you’re switching through the different identities to throw different switches and break different items…
I’d get to some annoying spots where the game forces you to go collect a ridiculous amount of blocks to complete a super build, which isn’t too bad since there are special blocks usually pretty close and you can use your communicator to see them in the world so you have an idea of where to go..
But by time you unlock the color gun. .all of it becomes just so overwhelming…
The game doesn’t reserve 2 different characters for these levels...
    which would’ve been much better
Instead they want to throw them all in... making you constantly switch through characters to make little progress only to have to switch back to another and another and another
The fire fighter and the color gun just became obnoxious…
The fire extinguisher hardly works and the paint sections are just time wasters…
Where sometimes it isn’t even about changing the color of a switch,, its painting a wall so you can climb it…
The pacing just becomes awful in the final stretches and it ruins the charm and feel of the game completely…
The puzzly grind is sort of what Lego games are about..
    so Lego fans rejoice…
But in general, while this game genuinely surprised me during the first 7 chapters and had me smiling nonstop, I felt it just started wasting my time towards the end just because…
Don’t let the final bits scare you away though..
LEGO City Undercover is a great game full of laughs and fun even if like me, you hate Lego games.

And beyond all of that, the game itself is just fun: the controls are solid, there's a lot of very interesting variety, and there's a nice balance of easiness and challenge here. Not only that, but the game has A TON of content (no shock given it's an open-world game, but for a "Lego" title, it's pretty impressive). Believe me when I say it took me 18 and a half hours to get through the main story and I didn't even complete 23% of the game. Trust me, you'll have A LOT to do in this game. The fact that the new-gen versions of the game also added a co-op feature that the Wii U version was desperately lacking is also icing on the cake.
That said, there ARE some issues here. For starters, while the game is as fun as I remember, the load times are just as bad as I remember. While I've heard they are slightly shorter on the Switch than the Wii U, I can tell you it's only a negligible difference, and while the loading screens are interactive now, that doesn't make waiting any better. On top of that, while the game looks good, there were quite a few frame rate drops that were a bit distracting. Now granted, I want to point out the elephant in the room and say that I played through most of the game undocked, so it would probably be a bit better when docked, but even so, it was a huge distraction for me while playing.
Though it's slightly flawed, "LEGO City Undercover" holds up nicely four years later and, if you're a fan of "LEGO" games, this is one you should definitely check out. And now that it's on next-gen consoles with a co-op feature that the Wii U version was sorely lacking, what better time than the present to give this game a look?
Final rating: 8 out of 10 "Great"

Lego City undercover lacks both charm and polish of other Lego games based on IPs. The games world feels dull and lifeless often feeling like the player is the only person there. The games story is very dull and bland like the rest of the game and has you following chase as he is try to arrest Rex fury who we are playing catch up too. The games writing isn't terrible with "some" funny line however it is nothing too memorable or noteworthy,

The game features lots of collectables which would usually unlock your favourites characters from what ever series the Lego game you playing is based on. This is not the case with Lego city undercover you unlock costumes featuring all time favourites such as "astronaut" and others I dont remember because they sucked. On top of this once a category of character is unlocked in the story you dont need any costume as they all do the same thing.

The worst offence of this game by far though is its performance it does not run well at all with a inconsistent often dipping to around 15fps making inputs feel delayed and the game as whole feel sluggish. The game also suffers from long load time which are not as bad as the Wii U version but still bad.

Do not buy this game it lacks charm and runs poorly however it would be perfect for family friendly fun for children allowing them to explore a big open world but this is the only real audience for the game hence the low score.

LEGO City Undercover is a great game. In fact, I'd say that it's still easily the best LEGO game -- it has the best open world, the best gameplay, and it has the most collectibles of all of the games. The graphics have been improved in this version, though not drastically. The models and cutscenes look better and the load times don't seem to be as bad as they infamously were in the Wii U game, but that could just be my imagination.

The frame rate for the game, at least when I last played it, was not necessarily "up to par." There were frequent drops and stutters. It was definitely worse in portable mode. Despite this, I found myself playing it quite a bit on portable mode. It really does enhance the game. Another reviewer here said that after you beat the story, the game crashes on a few occasions. This is true, but the game saves every time you do something important like collect something.

I originally gave LEGO City Undercover a 9. This version gets a -2 for frame rate and stutters but a +1 for portability. It's still a great game, but ultimately I have to give it a point lower due to the new issues.

I never thought that the game can give me a nausea. Awful fps and constant fps drops in portable mode. The game is fun for sure, but absolutely not playable. Really disappointed. How they managed to make lego city on 3ds more smooth than on Switch...

I played only on my tv with my Grandson on the split screen, so I did not face fps drop. However it is a very good surprise. An open world with many different missions, a lot of different things to explore. A must buy for players under 10 or Lego fans.

this is no doubt the worst version of this game you can get. I am absolutely convinced it is the exact wiiu port slightly modified. it has the same long atrocious loading times (up to 1 minute+ same as wiiu), glitches, freezes and crashes that the wiiu version had!

on the wiiu if you used the helipad sometimes it would freeze meaning you can push all the buttons you want but it won't

I've played this on several platforms including pc and ps4 and it wasn't even close to as bad on them.

the fps is astoundingly bad too some levels it drops down to 15fps! this is more proof it's the wiiu version because the switch is definitely powerful enough to handle this game and the lazy sobs didn't even bother to configure it to work on the switch. oh btw this is in docked mode too!

and last it doesn't save properly. the checkpoint save in the missions only works on the 2nd checkpoint. if you turn the console off while in a mission you will end up back at the police station. and finally after you finish the mission it doesn't save to save you have to go collect a brick or something to collect to force it to save otherwise you end up back at the start of checkpoint 2 with none of the stuff you collected and the mission isn't complete!!

if you have to get this game DO NOT get the switch version!

I haven't played any other LEGO games, as I don't like that franchise, but this is an exception. Amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is my review of Lego City Undercover [Switch] (Spoilers):

Story - Story is hilarious, having many references of well known movies from past, present and future (ex. Frank Honey is referenced of the coming movie Baby, giving Honey bad at driving and people calling him Honey). It gives a good family fun for the story especially for the children who haven't seen most of the big hit movies that we know and love so far. The ending gave out the old hero saves the city and gets the girl cliche, but made it funny is that one of the Sentinels is still after Chase with a Unicycle from beginning to end.

Gameplay - Much like Grand Theft Auto, except for the extreme violence and profanity of course, gives the player the open world of lego city to have fun with using disguise characters, collecting lego bricks, and re-performing parkour actions. But its just bad at the end as there are major glitches in the game. The game takes more than 2 minutes to load to the main menu after launching the game. Most of the time the audio cuts off during gameplay, having the player to force quit the game and re-launch. And I experience a non-progression after completing the free falling and start the parachute scenario when chasing Rex. After so many ways of maneuvering the free falling scenario I still get the result of non-progressing further in the game. But these situations are happening on the Switch only.

Mechanic - Easy to input and memorize, since it is a lego game there's not much to over learn during gameplay simply destroying constructed legos and when the opportunity for reconstructing other buildings in order to proceed of finishing the chapter. The combat system is parody version of Batman Arkham games as there pressing Y to knock down enemies and reacting by pressing X to see some "Cool" animations of defeating enemies. Driving is not a bother as well especially the steering mechanic, it gets wobbly form time to time but the player will get use to it when progressing more missions.

Characters - Chase McCain is just another Emmet from The Lego Movie, except he has a roll in the Lego Universe as a cliche cop who uses multiple disguises to finish his case of capturing Rex Furry. Frank Honey is the dorky characters that the player would just instantly avoid as he annoys Chase with his ignorant ideas and winds himself in trouble when helping. Characters from well known movies also appear either helping Chase or be cameos during cutscenes and gameplay (ex. Morgan Freeman helps Chase getting out of prison but does not want everyone to know its him because of copyright claim).

Conclusion - Story is hilarious, Gameplay is bad on the Switch, Mechanics are easy and Characters are hilarious to remember upon interactions. Lego City Undercover is a game that is fun for family time when it comes to nostalgia of multiple movie references but overall the gameplay still needs some work to make the game well played.

    Final verdict:
6/10 - The load times and gameplay is the reason I gave this score, but this is on the Switch I don't know how the other consoles are experiencing with their gameplay but I would not recommend this game on the Switch or PC right now until an official patch is set.

Buy, Not Buy or Rent - Rent, this game is an excuse to spent more time with their child when it comes to lego games.

A highly enjoyable open world LEGO adventure game. LEGO City is surprisingly dense, and there's a decent variety of objectives to complete. The story missions are also quite fun; the narrative is pretty light, but is still likeable and charming. Performance and stability is a bit subpar, but not to a degree that distracts too much from gameplay.

As an adult playing this game, I think that the game does a good job of making it interesting to both adults and children. The only problem I have experience whilst playing is a technical glitch that keeps happening; sometimes, whilst completing an activity, my character would glitch and get stuck in place, and no matter what buttons I press, I can't unjam him. And so, I'd have to turn it off and lose all my progress. Oh, and the load time is a little too long...it can get boring waiting approximately 1 minute or more every time you reach a checkpoint. For the future, I would like TT games to fix some frustrating things that appear in the game. For example, there was a bag that didn't allow me to finish the mission, I was standing on the marker but nothing happened. Similar issues happened a few times and the only way to fix them was to reload the game. The loading screens and the camera work also need to be worked on as they sometimes can be really annoying.

Lego City Undercover is a solid offering from Warner Bros. and TT Games. It doesn’t offer an experience all that different from previous Lego titles, but the jump to the Switch hardware does make it a step up from many other Wii U and 3DS Lego offerings. The game does suffer from some technical warts, but for those that never made the trip to Lego City, this is certainly the best way to experience it.
