Lamplight City is an intriguing mystery and an enjoyable graphic adventure experience. I appreciate how choice-heavy the narrative is, and I also really like how the game adapts to your actions throughout. The alternate history steampunk setting is intriguing, and I appreciate the game’s commentary on complex subjects like poverty and prejudice. Fans of mystery and graphics adventures who haven’t yet played Lamplight City might want to check out the game’s Nintendo Switch port.

Lamplight City is a compelling, challenging adventure game that has made the transition to the Switch quite nicely. The game is obviously designed around a mouse interface, but I never found it hassle to control and the text is actually readable in handheld mode. The story was interesting enough that I wanted to see how each case would end and where the overarching plot would go. The gameplay required some proper thought, and that was welcome as well. While the possibility of failure may turn off some players, I appreciate that the developers weren’t afraid to wander off the well-trodden adventure game trail for the sake of their vision.

Lamplight City is a Point-&-Click adventure game that bets on nostalgia and corrects all the flaws from the old sources of this genre on which it drinks from. Its small misses doesn't ruin the game experience and, despite being a niche game, it's recommended to anyone who is just seeking for a short, atmospheric and engaging story.

Its lovely art style, despite the lack of animations, is also a very welcome element, helping to create a Victorian-era atmosphere that fits perfectly with the game. Lamplight City's puzzles could have benefited from different difficulty levels though, as they feel too simplistic, which might put off more seasoned players of point and click adventures.

Lamplight City manages to breathe a little bit of new life into a tired genre, enough to keep it interesting, engaging, and surprising over multiple playthroughs.

Like many of the adventure puzzle games after which it’s patterned, Lamplight City comes across as a bit lackluster in both story and presentation. Retro adventure gamers may enjoy working their way through it, but I wouldn’t bank on it.
