    La Mulana 1 & 2 are some of the best Metroidvania games on the market. They aren’t for the faint of heart, however. While I think playing these games with a guide can still be fun, the fact that most players will need a guide to progress past the first area is really saying something.

    La Mulana 2 may just be more of the same, but it’s also a home run for a winning formula that nobody else is making nowadays. For players who enjoy complexity and depth, there’s an ocean of possibility here which makes any other Metroidvania look like a puddle by comparison. (Yeah, even Hollow Knight.) It’s humbling for a game to show me what it really feels like to not have my hand held at all: it forced me to swallow my pride, grab a pen and paper, and earn my progress forward. Few games can boast that. And once you’ve braved the ruins of La Mulana, you can bravely look to the future with confidence. Because you’re an archaeologist now.

    La Mulana 1 & 2 return in a pack that will delight metroidvania lovers. Despite having some flaws, the adventures presented by these games are so iconic that it is very difficult to ignore them. A difficult game, but very well calculated to be tremendously satisfying.

    These portings are definitely the best chance for the toughest players to enjoy these games, if they couldn't play them in the past. Not recommended to players with little patience.

    La Mulana is a smashing success in what it attempts to do. It’s a diabolical and lavishly-layered set of ancient ruins that will test your video game skills physically and mentally. I respect the hell out of this commitment to brusque, difficult game design. At the same time, I’m exhausted after playing so much La Mulana. It’s overall a breathtaking game, but it’s clearly not something for everyone and as I found out, it’s not for the 2020 version of me. Now, introduce time travel and 2012 me is probably super into this game. But I can only confidently recommend those who want the sternest of retro-fueled gameplay challenges tackle this behemoth.

    This is a punishing set of games that plops you into a temple and expects you to get out using your own puzzle-solving prowess. If you're looking for a game on your Switch that takes the idea of Indiana Jones but substitutes the action for obtuse brain-teasers, then look no further. La Mulana 1 & 2 offer up a challenging puzzle experience and figuring your way through these ruins will make you feel smarter than a whip-lashing Harrison Ford.

    La Mulana 1 y 2 son dos metroidvanias que tienen la suficiente diferencia con otros de su genero para ser considerados un subgenero en sí mismo, y esa diferencia viene de los puzzles. Bebiendo de la saga metroid, las películas de Indiana Johns y los antiguos juegos de aventuras gráficas de la época de MS2, La Mulana nos pone al frente de un explorador que viaja hasta las ruinas de La Mulana, para buscar a su padre desaparecido. Las ruinas están envueltas en misterio, con diferentes áreas que parecen construidas por diferentes civilizaciones, y plagadas de peligros y trampas que recompensan la investigación descuidada con una muerte rápida. Deberemos ir desentrañando el misterio de las ruinas, ligado con el origen de la humanidad, resolviendo puzzles en las diferentes areas o entre diferentes áreas. La Mulana es enorme, y toda ella es un puzzle en sí misma, así que deberemos ir aprendiendo el lore de la misma para entenderla y saber cómo actuar en algunos casos. Esto implica tener en cuenta todas las tablillas que nos vayamos encontrando, incluidas las ilegible, y también el propio diseño de escenarios, que nos puede dar información sobre quién o para qué están construidas ciertas partes del laberinto. Esto hace que la dificultad de los puzzles sea infernal, y estos tengan una enorme variedad: desde los puzzles simples que podremos resolver sin movernos de la sala donde están (elegir que interruptor activar entre dos, habiendo cadaveres en uno de ellos...), tener los objetos adecuados para superar cierto obstáculo, modificar ciertos mecanismos como el mecanismo de drenaje de agua en una zona para poder secar un área distinta, o desentrañar el lore de ciertos lugares para entender como funcionan algún oscuro mecanismo y que es lo que tenemos que hacer para superarlos (para lo cual en algunos casos las pistas están repartidas por todas las ruinas). No es un juego fácil y no es para todos los públicos por esto, pero el desafío de resolver los puzzles por ti mismo y sin guía es extremadamente satisfactorio (aún así, que no te extrañe que en algún momento no te quede más remedido que recurrir a una).
    El juego además, deja un margen amplio para hacer romper la secuencia en que se supone que esta diseñado el juego, al permitir la libre exploración y existir un amplia interconexión entre las áreas (la primera vez que me pase La Mulana, no encontré al que se supone que es el segundo boss hasta casi el final del juego... siendo un chiste para ese momento...).
    Todo lo dicho se aplica a La Mulana 2, donde encarnamos a la hija del protagonista del primer juego que regresa a La Mulana para buscar a su padre desaparecido, pero eso sí, siendo este "La Mulana 2" un juego mucho más pulido y más difícil aún.

    Si te convence lo aquí expuesto, no te pierdas estas joyazas, pero absteneros los que no os guste romperos la sesera porque estos juegos os van a sacar de quicio.    … Expand

    La Mulana 1 et 2 ne sont pas juste deux excellents metroidvania, il s’agit également de deux très beaux hommages aux jeux 16 bits, très respectueux de leur ADN, et de surcroît généreux en contenu. A mi-chemin entre un Castlevania et un Tomb Raider à la sauce 2D, La Mulana reste un jeu d’aventure très punitif et totalement décomplexé, qui mêle brillamment plates-formes, combats contre des boss gigantesques, énigmes et exploration. Un incontournable pour tous les amateurs de rétrogaming, même s’il est vrai que la direction artistique très particulière des jeux ne plaira pas à tout le monde!    … Expand
