"Crimson Castle Remilia II: Yougen no Requiem" is a sequel to the side-scrolling action game "Crimson Castle Remilia Scarlet Symphony" featuring characters from the popular IP "Touhou Project" that is loved by fans all over the world.

Continuing from the previous work, the popular illustrator Banhai Akira has arranged dark and bold character designs that make the most of the original charm, adding unique elements such as barrage and floating to a full-fledged action game, and a beautiful game that has been improved in quality from the previous work. It is a work that has been powered up everywhere, such as graphics and gorgeous sounds.

In this work, Izayoi Sueya becomes the main character, and the story is drawn in which she searches for the suddenly disappeared residents of the Scarlet Devil Mansion and the whereabouts of the spring that has not come, and heads for the supposedly disappeared "Scarlet Devil Mansion".

I had a solid time with Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger's Requiem and it is a step-up from the first game but it doesn't really go above and beyond what you'd expect from 2D action games. It's certainly worth at least a playthrough, though, especially if you're a Touhou fan.

Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem is now preserved on modern hardware. The good and bad of it is that it hasn’t aged too well, but the challenge is up there for any masochist who wants to take on. But on that same note, you can play through on a lesser difficulty and enjoy the beautiful illustrations and gothic narrative. It’s rare to find a new gaming experience that borrows from early Castlevania titles, so if you’re eager to test your 2D action skills, you’ll find more than a few moments of fun here.

I enjoyed Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem and did enjoy my time with it. It will really test you with its difficulty. It also looks gorgeous. However, this is an incredibly basic title. There are no frills to this Castlevania inspired Touhou fan game. Also, it feels like while I did see progress from the original, it didn’t build on and learn from it enough to really stand out and show major progress. It’s absolutely fine, especially if you enjoyed Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony and want more of that, but it isn’t one of the best Castlevania-likes I’ve played.

If you enjoyed the first Koumajou Remilia game and want another serving of the same, here you go. If you’re a big Touhou fan, this is above average in terms of the spread available on Switch. Perhaps you have happy memories of the original release from back in the day? Well, you might appreciate the few extras that have been added here. For everyone else, this is a very average side-scrolling action game with a very good soundtrack. There are better ways to spend your time and money.
