Kingdom of Arcadia is worth a punt if you’re a fan of side-scrolling fantasy games. It doesn’t quite do enough to earn the title of ‘Metroidvania’ in our eyes, but that’s not a bad thing in itself. We’d say it’s closer to your basic linear platformer, and although it has some clear limitations, the core gameplay is definitely strong enough to keep you engaged throughout.

Hidden items and passages encourage you to explore every corner. But what you find is never worth the effort. Often, I found myself just wanting to be done with the game and not because it is a poorly made game or even a long game. It is just boring. The stages, the movement, the music just does not make for an enjoyable experience. I would give this try only if you are a super fan of basic, retro, action-adventure platformers. Even then I would try something else out first.

This isn’t to say it’s not a fun game, it’s just a very generic one, with a standard premise (kid gets sucked into a videogame) and a basic fantasy world. It’s a stock-standard action platformer—nothing more, nothing less—and if you enjoy the genre’s no-nonsense fun and you’re not concerned at a lack of bells and whistles, you’ll like this one too. On the other hand, if you’re coming in expecting a metroidvania because the game’s own description calls it such, prepare to be a little disappointed.

Kingdom of Arcadia unfortunately does little to elevate itself above the scores of other action platforming games just like it. It fails to take advantage of its setting, which could have resulted in a unique experience or at least something a little less predictable. It’s mildly amusing at best but derivative of everything that has come before it.
