The gameplay loop works well as something to play for just a few minutes each day. [Issue #46 – May/June 2020, p. 18]

Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story is likely going to still be a cult classic like its predecessors. This experiment has proven to be a huge success. Even gamers who are turned off by the words 'procedurally-generated' and 'roguelike,' might actually enjoy this new take on ronin simulation. It is mostly elevated thanks to the combat, and the attention to detail of choices that can be made to tip the scales in one's favour. Don't expect something like Ninja Gaiden 2, since the combat here is more methodical and gritty.

Katana Kami is a must-play for roguelike fans. The game loop of earning money by day and fighting monsters by night creates a fantastic gameplay experience. Still, there are some features that could use some clarity and confusing menus do more harm than good to its accessibility.

Have you ever played a way of the samurai game? If you didnt, do not give this game a playthrough. If you have played a way of the samuraiHave you ever played a way of the samurai game? If you didnt, do not give this game a playthrough. If you have played a way of the samurai game, then you'll understand that this game is legit trash you'd find in a dumpster behind a tim hortons. It's not even a way of the samurai game, i dont know why they'd called it that. It dungeon crawling aspect is mediocre to crap, the controls are junk, and the story was sad (not in a good way either). If this is what Acquire is doing now, then i dont want them to have money. Just port the WotS series in a collection to PC/Switch/PS4, and dont even mention this abomination. Full Review »

If you are a Shiren the Wanderer fan, or just enjoy high stakes procedurally generated dungeon crawling, you will probably like this. This kind of game is not for everyone, but it fits very will within it's specific niche. It's perfect for portable system like the switch. It's a little hard but for it's genre I would say the difficultyis about average. Easy enough to be accessible, plenty difficult enough to keep you from getting bored. Full Review »
