It dungeon crawling aspect is mediocre to crap, the controls are junk, and the story was sad (not in a good way either). If this is what Acquire is doing now, then i dont want them to have money. Just port the WotS series in a collection to PC/Switch/PS4, and dont even mention this abomination. Expand

This is a groundhog day experience unlike no other that only a neanderthal would be enchanted by. Your only freedom is to go into a dungeon embedded into a magic tree, use the same 3-button combinations to level up your one OP sword that you'll have to repair every 20 minutes, and then warp out to repeat all the crap levels again the next day starting again at LVL1.

Anyone that gives this game more than a 3/10 is clearly paid by developers to spread fake reviews or suffers from a brain defect.

Laggy, badly translated, pointless gameplay loop, cumbersome navigation and dull story are some of the defining characteristics of this game. I really, really wanted to like this, but this game is a mess.

I'm only a few hours in at the moment so will update with a proper review later on but for now I would definitely say stay away, looks absolutely awful and the gameplay is very bland, hefty price tag which doesn't help. Maybe they may patch it but it feels and looks like a cheap mobile game in current state.

An insult to the WotS series. Useless roguelike dungeon crawler. Give us WotS 5!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked this game a lot. There's plenty of hours of fun to be had here. If you include the bonus dungeon, after you beat the main game. I have 2 gripes about this game. 1, the skills on your sword are hard to precisely call upon when needed and sometimes the skills come out when you dont want them too; due to clunky controls for sword skills. 2, sometimes the game gitters, here and there. By gitters, i mean that the screen flakes out from time to time. the devs know should know what im talking about. Other than that i thought the game was well done. and i am looking forward to another installment. hopefully they at least make the sword skills less clunky to use. Expand

The gameplay loop works well as something to play for just a few minutes each day. [Issue #46 – May/June 2020, p. 18]

Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story is likely going to still be a cult classic like its predecessors. This experiment has proven to be a huge success. Even gamers who are turned off by the words 'procedurally-generated' and 'roguelike,' might actually enjoy this new take on ronin simulation. It is mostly elevated thanks to the combat, and the attention to detail of choices that can be made to tip the scales in one's favour. Don't expect something like Ninja Gaiden 2, since the combat here is more methodical and gritty.

Roguelikes always involve repetition, but the difference between a good roguelike and a bad one is whether there’s a sense of momentum from one run to the next – some feeling that I’m slowly chipping away at a discernible goal by gaining the right tools or learning the right lessons. Katana Kami occupies that space for a while, but then keeps going for no good reason. Players with the self-discipline to call it quits when the final boss is felled may find value here, but as a whole, Katana Kami is a solid eight-hour roguelike stretched and distorted into a thirty-hour grotesquerie.
