Experience an action-packed mashup of old-school arcade action with modern roguelike design by patrolling the skies for alien invaders on a rocket-powered jetboard.
Maintain altitude to avoid incoming fire while trading laser blasts with extraterrestrial invaders. Wield a wide variety of weapons and rescue the planet’s would-be abductees from a monstrous fate. Overcome throngs of foes by turning the jetboard into a screen-clearing ballistic missile capable of wiping out advancing armadas, mutated creatures, and massive bosses. Plunder gold coins in each procedurally-generated stage to purchase powerful upgrades, such as new armor, an expanded armory, and a range of jetboard tuneups that allow the hero to dominate the skies. Advance through the campaign, choosing branching paths after completing each world before squaring up against massive, multi-stage boss fights on the road to victory.

Although it has another Williams arcade game in its title, Jetboard Joust brings the spirit of Defender back in a brilliant roguelike setup.

Although I’m filled with questions about the validity of Jetboard Joust’s roguelite status, it plays well enough and can likely provide solid entertainment in short bursts. Fans of classic arcade games may dig this new twist on the high-scoring chasing arcade shooter, but after one full run through, I’ve had “joust” about enough Jetboarding to last a lifetime.

Overall, this is a really enjoyable shooter. It feels good to play, and that’s really what counts in the end. It could be a little harder, and I do hope the technical issues I had while playing it were either unfortunate coincidences or will be fixed in an update. But I certainly found the game worth my time while it lasted, and it scratches the Defender itch well enough that I suspect I will be returning to it now and then in the future.

Jetboard Joust is a game that didn’t receive as much fanfare as it should have. The gameplay is spot on, the boss battles are intense, and it looks and sounds good. The explosions and the amount of weapons you can select from take a retro style game and merge in modern day features. My only gripe is that it could have been a bit more on the roguelike style of play. But, those of you that want to play a roguelike that’s lite on the roguelike elements will enjoy this game. Expand

Jetboard Joust undoubtedly cribs heavily from the likes of Defender from back in the day in particular, but by adding roguelike elements, different weapons, and even bosses it differentiates itself quite nicely. Make no mistake, this won't be easy at first, even if you're familiar with the general mechanics of trying to keep innocent people from being grabbed by enemy craft and flown to the top of the screen... then turning into more formidable foes you'll need to deal with. The alternative weapons are different enough from one another that I'd imagine people will have strong opinions about their most and least favorite, and I appreciate the way they can change how you play and add a wrinkle of strategy to the mix as well since their ammo is limited. This won't be a game for everyone but for a budget-friendly price anyone who appreciates classic arcade games and a challenge should absolutely pick it up!
