Live the horror by the hand of its defining yokais and submerge into the superstitions of the past driven by a unique story and exploration. Ikai embodies the spirit of the classical psychological horror genre with a defenceless main character incapable of attacking the evil creatures. However, it explores a new sense of horror by making the player face the threats directly neither fleeing nor attacking. Every mechanic of the game is meant to raise this relatable feeling of helplessness and create a tense atmosphere. The slow, precise and natural movements as a way of interaction resemble real life's to foster immersion in the uncanny world of Ikai . Expand

Despite the cumbersome controls, lack of scares, and somewhat mundane puzzles, Ikai has a fantastic atmosphere, and can offer Japanese horror fans a strong story that keeps you hooked throughout.

Poor resolution and performance make moving through the world an annoyance. And unfortunately that’s the entire gameplay loop. Even just catching a glimpse of an enemy can be hard from far away given the resolution, and effectively navigating the halls of the shrine to escape is much more difficult at twenty frames per second. So while I could forgive some of the more repetitive encounters and lackluster voice acting, everything compounds into a very unimpressive showing. This isn’t necessarily a bad game, but I’d strongly suggest playing it elsewhere if possible.

Ikai is a first-person psychological horror game that isn’t so much scary as it is confounding. It wastes its effectively chilling setting by simply getting you lost in it. You’ll be annoyed more often than frightened, confused more often than entertained.

Overall, Ikai is a psychological horror game that only provides horror through its lack of direction, scare tactics, and numerous graphical issues. The atmosphere it creates is brilliant, but it is a disappointment in every other aspect.

The Yokai are really well done, and the game features some great set pieces; it’s a shame then that it’s let down by underutilised Yokai and some sections that fall a little flat. Despite those issues, anyone looking for a horror game based on Japanese folklore may find what they are looking for here."
