Dec 21, 2017Hammerwatch carries the torch for Gauntlet with aplomb. It takes its concept and magnifies it into something richer and more thought-provoking than Ed Logg could’ve ever imagined. It can be played and enjoyed by anybody, from the lone adventurer to ale-soaked mates and everything in between.

Jan 9, 2018When I first picked up Hammerwatch I was expecting it to scratch the Diablo itch, but it ended up scratching an itch I didn’t even realize I had. The wonderfully crafted campaigns present both fun and challenging tasks that can be tackled in a number of different ways depending on which of the seven classes you choose. It’s likely that the game will run thin before really messing around with all the classes, but the soon to launch online mode could help elevate that feeling. Even with a few blemishes with the music and a couple of crashes, the hook of exploration and monster slaying kept me crawling back for more.

Mar 4, 2018Hammerwatch is set to strike a chord with fans of retro-style adventure games that feature plenty of action and a solid multiplayer experience. While its solo mode may not be the zenith of the experience, the local multiplayer mode has plenty to entertain its players and the game's overall fluidity and competent visuals add up to an experience that will find its place with many players.

Aug 13, 2018I would argue that Hammerwatch is best experienced with a group of like-minded adventurers. There’s far more fun to be found in the chaotic mayhem of heroically charging down a corridor together, slinging spells at your enemies, cutting them down to size and knocking back an arrow or two, compared to when having to endure the game’s repetitive design alone. There are enough successes to consider a purchase, and even more so once online support arrives.

Jan 11, 2018With online still to come, there's a bit more that Hammerwatch has to offer in the future. But I just couldn't take enough charm or personality from the game to make it stand out, especially when that eShop to-play list just keeps on growing...
