Great artstyle, compelling story, fun gameplay, and well written characters. Only downside is that the game ends up getting repetitive after beating it a few times. Not the most replayable game, but one that is definitely worth buying.

Hades is probably the best roguelike I've played. If you like Greek mythology, this game is a full meal. The gameplay is easy to learn, the commands are very responsive and the more you play, the more you feel the progress. The only reason I'm not giving a 10 is because it lacks more maps when compared with Dead Cells, it could easily have transitions maps.

The game does however struggle on the Switch. In intense fights, with lot's of graphical effects, the machine is not able to keep up. This is quite annoying, as it's really when the game is most intense you need it the most to run smoothly. Though I have joyed to play this a lot on the switch, I would assume it's better on a more powerful device. Without these issues, I would give this game 10/10.

Indie games rarely have a narrative so full and compelling… let alone rogue like games, where narrative is often little more than a vague idea of who the player character is and what they’re trying to accomplish. Hades is different it has depth, a diverse cast of unique relatable characters, and a seemingly endless story drip fed to you just frequently enough to keep you invested. The voice acting is excellent and the sheer volume of recorded dialogue is mind blowing… I suspect it puts a lot of AAA games to shame, honestly. So narratively it’s a major success - how about the gameplay? It’s… good. Pretty run of the mill rogue-lite. Pick between a small selection of weapons, hop in the action, collect randomly awarded upgrades and resources, and fight as far into the brutally oppressive dungeons until you inevitably die and get sent back to the start. Rinse and repeat. It’s fun and challenging. The enemy variety is excellent, growing and evolving over time to keep things interesting and keep you on your toes. The various buffs you collect are typically varied enough to make each run feel a bit different and challenge you in new ways. For someone who despises roguelike games, it’s likely not gonna change that… but for someone new to the genre I think there’s a good chance this can win them over and show them what makes these games fun and special. My biggest complaint with Hades is map variety. You fight through a handful of rooms in 4 main biomes. They’re all well designed, each very different and visually distinct from the others, the artwork is fantastic… but I think this is where the game feels most repetitive. Just a couple more with a branching path or two would have taken the game to the next level in making each run feel a bit less repetitive. Something like Dead Cells, where the start and end points are the same between runs but the paths available for you to take change over time. Maybe someday hades will get a DLC that adds something like this - if not, it doesn’t change the fact that hades is great and absolutely worth my time. Highly suggest giving this one a go. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and still haven’t experienced everything the game has to offer after dozens of hours. Can’t wait to see what’s next for the team behind this game, and look forward to playing other games that draw inspiration from Hades. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hades is definitely one of the few good, polished games released on the Switch lately. It's not very expensive for its degree of polish, too. Having said that, I dont think it deserves the many 10/10 scores it has been getting either and I'll try to explain why.

Let me start with the story. By chosing an intruiging setting, Supergiant managed to incorporate the cycle of life and death into the story in a fashion similar to Dark Souls. As weird as it sounds, this really helps with the flow and immersion, since playing feels like a constant battle rather than a repeating game. The game comes with A TON of well written and voice-acted lines that comment on your last runs and progress, further increasing this feeling of consistency. Besides this living world however, the story itself feels fairly boring and cookie-cutter. It tries to be character driven, but because very few characters actually do something and all information/progress is given through dialogue, it becomes very tedious very quickly. To be fair: I dont think this is the writers' fault. I think they did the best with what they were given. A rogue-like like this just doesn't lend itself for a character-driven story.

The vibe of the storytelling also never really gelled with me. The game is clearly giving a modern twist to mythology with its cartoonish gods (whose artstyle is lovely bytheway) and witty quips, but as I'm battling my way through the underworld to the sound of metal as a wisecracking prince of darkness with an infernal machinegun, I never get the feeling that the game is in on the joke, as it instead tries to present the main character as a certified badass and tell a serious story. This gets cringy at times, and they would've been better off going all in on the goofyness.

The gameplay loop is what you expect from a rogue-like, and it's decent. Zagreus controls smoothly. You battle your way through 4 stages of the underworld as you collect divine boons to power you up. The 4th stage is a bit lackluster, but overall, the content is varied, enjoyable and good for a couple of hours. Needing to luck out with your stages and drops is a staple of rogue-likes, so that's fine, but my main gripe with the boons was that while you get a lot of them, a lot of them feel almost useless. An overall build could sometimes steer you in the right direction, but I never felt excited for finding the one upgrade that paired well with my build, lifted my powers to a higher level and changed my playstyle (with maybe the exception of Daedalus hammers). This is also partially caused by the fact that late stage enemies are absolute beefcakes with tons of health and armor. Sure, I was aware that it was my build that enabled me to take them out in 6 hits in the first place, but from a players perspective, you dont feel much of a difference when killing enemies in 6 hits as opposed to 12. That's what it should all be about. I want to FEEL like I made a clever, powerful build, but I rarely ever did.

In addition, part of the content and progress is locked behind 2 currencies for you to grind: Darkness and keys (and later rare resources and aspects, but I didn't get into those). Even though they implemented these as smoothly as they could have, this was just a very unfortunate design decision. For example: Boss Theseus uses the same spear that you can unlock. How much more organic and satisfying would it have been if you were able to unlock your spear weapon by beating Theseus and taking it from him, rather than grinding and paying 8 keys? How much more satisfying would it have been if Zagreus gradually became stronger based on skills you used and decisions you made, rather than grinding and paying darkness? Every time I had to pick a key over a boon, I felt like I was cutting myself in the fingers for that run, but I also needed those keys to unlock content. It really felt like something out of a mobile game rather than an actual Switch title.

In conclusion, Hades is a solid title released in a time of drought for the Switch. If you're into rogue-likes: Pick it up. It will definitely give you enough bang for your buck. However, dont expect it to be the game-of-the-year, genre-defining title that some reviews are suggesting. It simply isn't that.

A graceful and gorgeous rouge-like game. I would recommend it to anyone who want to have a taste of the rouge-like genre.

However after hours of play, you will find the pattern changes are little and might get tired of it quickly like I do. If I could choose again, I would definitely not rush playing and would take it slow to enjoy it for a longer time.

I am playing on the Switch so a lot of it is little characters and enemies running around. Not the most detail. I did see they made the Greek goddess Athena black. lol. It wasn’t until some podcaster mentioned how they loved that that I realized it though. If Hollywood is doing it you know gaming will. Besides, making someone’s color different is okay as long as it’s from a light skin person. Cries of white washing will happen if/when it’s the other way. I also think this game did a great job with the progression system - the several different types of unlocks that you’re working toward gives a hint of that addictive grind while giving you a rewarding amount of story progression. Where the game is the weakest is the gameplay itself. It’s not bad, but after about 5 hours of playtime, it begins to feel like it’s more button mashing than anything else. It would be a game that would be fun with another person, but playing it alone makes you really start noticing the lack of precision and the over reliance on semi-mindless button mashing. Though I had a lot of fun and have returned to it for a second time, I find it to be overhyped because the exceptional presentation overshadows the simple gameplay, even by standards set by other rogue like games. Ok, still here? Good, enjoy the review, not clouded the majority hivemind.

I like to start my reviews with the things I enjoyed. Generally, that IS the most highlight but then base everything on—superficial things took way beyond what really matters while ignoring all the glaring problems underneath.

    Positives:

Music- Really well crafted. Orchestrated tunes, as well as the pieces with lyrics, are all great. I found myself sitting around Eurydice sing plenty of times. Some of the pieces set up a boss fight, awesome, and gets your blood pumping (The first few times). It wears off after you hear the same thing 10 times.

Voice acting: Good, Eurdiyce in particular, as well as Thanatos and Achillies.Quirky dialogue is really great in many exchanges; Thesus and Zag got a laugh out of me a couple of times. Zag's responses with Tisiphone got me to laugh as well.

Side Stories: Fun, though, while I enjoyed unlocking parts, not a single one convinced me to finish them after getting the true ending.

Combat: It's a roguelike. It's quite fun for the first hour or two.

    ___________________________________________

    Negatives:
Combat: It's a roguelike; it's quite fun for the first hour or two. Weapons are both fun and excruciatingly bad. This isometric, procedurally generated dungeon scroller and some weapons are crafted to not work on this plane. The sword is a 4-way weapon on a platform that is anything but. The bow might be the stupidest weapon in the game to work with by far as a base weapon. In a game that demands you zip around enemies like a madperson, having to charge your basic attack makes it unfun.

Main Story: The first time I cleared the game, and I learned where it was going, I went "OH! Intrigue" by the 10th time? There was no intrigue to any of the threads that the narrative eluded to. If there are and they are in the side missions, the game doesn't sell itself well to do the same thing over and over and over again to get the complete explanation(s). I completed the entire main story in 38 runs; if you can't settle the entire thing by then, you failed.

Voice Acting: Sure, it's well-acted, but the delivery by the actors wasn't great. I get someone like Zagreus is supposed to be a moody angst-ridden character. But places where he needed to emote, he didn't, and it happened a lot. Some of the Gods are either Hammy or way overplayed. Megaera was possibly one of the worst offenders here by her willowy delivery that grated on my nerves every time I had to talk to her.

Items/costs: Inflated costs that beg you to play this thing forever. It's not worth dumping hundreds of hours. Again, the combat is fun, but that lasts for like two hours, at most. After you hit a threshold with weapon upgrades and shadow, plus figuring out to beef up your HP as fast as you can in the run, you end up in this droll, boring slog of doing the same thing over and over because deviating from it doesn't freshen up the game; it's purposely choosing the least efficient path to break up the monotony. Force concentration, you're doing this in this game, or you're not playing it right.

Then there is the expansion of both the House of Hades and the material costs to build relationships. The tiny amount of gems and diamonds to unlock much of the house put way too much emphasis on the currency and not the thing you bought. Using the hard-earned currency made the thing you spent it on underwhelming. It's almost like the game mocking you for working hard for a cosmetic item that does nothing.

Earning Nectar feels the same way, but worse in some cases, but there are just so many characters you have to both give it to AND how many you have to give to each, and if you're lucky; you might 3 in a run, sometimes you'll get none. No thanks, I'm good; I don't want to keep doing the same thing and over again for a dribble of content.

Harder Difficulties: You can paint a turd up; however, you want; it's still a turd. Pickable hindrances to make things "More challenging" is lazy. If you really wanted to give players added challenges, you should have just had more games across the board.

Conclusion: Hades is a fun game that caps out at being fun around 10 hours, at most. Once you complete the main story, nothing else really has enough weight in my opinion to go on. If you enjoy the monotony of endlessly doing the same content again and again, the game provides it, but not for anyone else. Put down the controller and move onto something new.

Hades has a cool idea, and the characters are really lovable and alive, though it is just a glorified grind without much payoff. Even playing 3 hours more I didn't make progress with any characters, you don't even know if you'll find that item out there, or if the character you want to talk to will even be around!

The combat is that serviceable and then bland feeling Supergiant combat with that same Deviantart.com art style. The music is the same bland music they always have.

You feel addicted to wanting to upgrade your relationships, home, and character, and the combat to do it feels like a bland and stressful slog, as it is often a gangbang-bullethell game.

Really fun at first and for a few hours, but becomes incredibly grindy after that. Its just the same thing over and over worth no sense of progression. You might get a few crystals there and there but changes on the gameplay is minimal, so you're just stuck repeating the same gameplay.

Wish it was 'punchier' (shorter) witbout the need to drop dozens of hours of samey grind.

Even older games like Grim Dawn or Diablo 2 are more fun than this, and graphically better too. Do yourself a favour and avoid....

This just isn't my type of game. I guess I don't like Roguelikes. I can't stand dying so often and restarting the whole game no matter how far you've gone. This game does look and play well on the Switch- so it's a good platform. Would be good if you like this type of game.

A neat distraction but I can't imagine playing this for hours, let alone days on end. Combat-focused experiences aren't really my thing and Hades hasn't done much to sway my opinion.

Mythology is a fascinating topic, one I enjoy quite a lot, so games based on mythology will always grab my attention. When you're just starting to play the game, Hades feels like a lot of fun. Characters feel interesting, combat is fast and engaging, and everything feels really good quality. Unfortunately, this is one of those games that doesn't succeed on being a roguelite; Hades gets very repetitive very fast, and everything goes from being enjoyable to being tedious. It's two hours of a good game, and the rest is a chore.

Perhaps if Hades had made the decision to not use the randomised nature of a roguelite, it could have been an exceptional game for me. Sadly, this is another game that everyone else will look at with adoration, while I simply sit in disappointment, wishing I could love something that I just don't.

I turned that mode on to make it easier and the game designers refused that. I don't want to grind out forever on your game. I'm fine with needing to die to repeat conversations with people to move the story along in an organic way, that's cool. But what is the point of an easy mode if you negate it by making it harder as the damage resistance increases? I've tried Bastion, Transistor, and Hades and I don't recommend any of them. They all have good elements but fatal flaws that ruin the fun. Go play Don't Starve, Stardew Valley instead, and Mark of the Ninja instead, those are truly good games. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't be drawn in by the saccharine reviews if you're going to buy the Switch version.

I bought this version after last week's Nintendo Direct. I bought it on the eShop, which means I cannot get a refund.

It's a definite shame, because I had wanted to play the game. The atmosphere is great and the main gameplay loop is satisfying. The character interactions are engaging, and I truly wanted to see Zagreus succeed, even if his failures were due to my butterfingers.

However, I simply cannot play the game.

    Why?

Because there's a bug that prevents me from loading my save, possibly because I didn't buy one of each perk in the Mirror of Night. I chose different perks that I thought would benefit me the most during my playthrough. I can only assume that this is the reason my digital copy of the game is not working.

Yes, reader, I'm telling you that if you choose to spend the darkness (currency rewarded from dungeon runs) on perks you want, rather than every perk, then the game will refuse to load your save. Currently, the developer's recommendation is to start a new save.

At this point, I'm not particularly inclined to restart the game after putting several hours into it. I have other games in my backlog that are guaranteed to work. Unlike the titular god of the dead, I don't have all the time in the world.

The consistent crashing is something that should have been tested during development. At the time of writing, this has not been patched. I have attempted to replay this game at least once a day over the course of the week, to no avail.

I attempted to play the game again before submitting this review and it crashed while attempting to load my save.

Also, it's annoying how you can't gift your interest whenever they're talking to someone else beforehand. This results in an excessive amount of playthroughs just to continue your relationship imo. They should have allowed you to gift whenever and cut down the # of playthroughs to 4 or 5 for the true ending. Expand

The biggest problem with this game is its fundamental design of repeating levels, dying, becoming slightly stronger than last time, and hoping the RNG system will give you the abilities needed to beat the game, because you cannot beat this game with any build or any weapon, it really is so narrowed down to a singular play style that attempting to learn new weapons/fighting styles and honing your mechanics is like a said, a gigantic waste of time. The game gives you barely any chances to heal, yet the gameplay and enemies damaging abilities are so unforgiving that you absolutely NEED a reliable healing mechanic in this game. It’s ironic, because it gets harder and harder the farther you reach, yet you find yourself losing more and more precious health that you need in order to keep going further. It’s just one gigantic frustrating loop that at its core, is more tedious and time consuming than trying to learn how to knit with one hand. The one and only redeeming quality about this game is the dialogue, which was actually hilarious and really well done. Do yourself a favor and skip this game. There are plenty of other fantastic games out there worth your precious time. Not this insult.

Also, I’m glad it was only $25 so I didn’t feel like I was completely ripped off.

Despite how long I’ve been ranting here, there’s plenty more I could say about Hades. But honestly, I feel it’s best you discover for yourself why I’m so enamored of Supergiant’s latest adventure. Though the game isn’t quite perfect, it truly earned the accolades it’s been receiving. And honestly, if they decide to implement some additional content later on, most of my complaints would be rendered moot. This is honestly my favorite game yet by Supergiant Games, and easily one of my favorite indies of 2020. If you love rogue and need something new to enjoy, be sure to put this one on your wishlist.
