Arguably the best rougelike ever, beating even fabulous Dead cells, that gives us virtually no story at all. Characters, music, art - all this emphasize the story and setting. This is a masterpiece, and to me on Switch it goes with Zelda BOTW, Celeste, or Undertale, on the "incredible games" shelf. It's smooth, it's well connected to the real mythology and builds a solid multi-tiered story, it's full of unique dialogue and great acting and music, and it's diverse in use of weapons and bonuses.
I played (and enjoyed) Bastion years ago but had not followed the studio at all so I didn't know about Pyre and Transistor, but with this title I think they will definitely enter the world of big studios. This game is on another level.

    - Dialogue pretty much never repeats (I'm at over 160 runs, and seriously they have written and acted stuff for the most unexpected situations), voice acting is super solid and full of life
    - The OST is a masterpiece and fades amazingly with gameplay and story
    - Weapons that you dismiss at first become absolutely fantastic in very different playstyles once you embrace the positive synergies (make different choices and you will be blown away by bonuses and weapons you completely dismissed)
    - For anybody struggling or with disabilities the "God mode" allows ramping down difficulty to enjoy the story (while still earning it)
    - It's funny (with a lot of contextual stuff referring to your encounters or previous lives etc)
    - It's beautiful, it's fluid (with a slight exception for completely insane rooms or difficulty levels where dozens of things are exploding on-screen at once)
    - The story is incredibly well layered and connected to greek mythology
    - There's a story, and there's more, and then more
    - Even when you're really done with the story, you still have a good reason to keep playing (from a story perspective as well as for the completionist aspect)
    - The "heat" system (adding different kinds of difficulty for your run in exchange for rewards) is well thought out and adds to the challenge once you're comfortable with the "normal" game. If you think you know the bosses and enemies then add some heat and discover new ones.

I've encountered maybe 3 minor bugs (visual mostly) during all that time (and nothing preventing me from playing or even messing with my progress).
I'm still unlocking interactions with some characters and completing the list of prophecies (so I'm far from done with any cosmetic or achievement stuff, for which I have less interest anyway). And still discovering ways to use the weapons differently, and to make boons interact in new ways.

That game is worth the "full" price of typical Switch games so its normal price is a discount really.
Supergiant said they won't do DLCs or a sequel or anything like that but honestly I hope they reconsider.

This is a genuinely amazing game, and I am addicted to it! I have never played a rogue-like game before, but easily took to this one. For me, what makes the game so great is:
    1. Continuity and relationships: it really feels like your character develops a meaningful relationship with NPCs throughout the game. It is these relationships that add a significant depth to the gameplay and is key to avoiding repetition. When you die it is not simply a case that the game resets - it feels like you are wiser and the game has deepened. Each time you die, the NPCs comment on your progress, where you got to, who killed and you get to know more about them as you go and feel like you are building a relationship which adds depth to interaction. This makes the conversations feel more natural and less like a repetition (which is key to the game avoiding becoming stale).
    2. Variation and strategy development: each run is different, despite being in the same environment. The rotation of rooms helps, but it is really differences in abilities, choices etc as you go. As your boons reset at every run, each time you feel like you are engaging in the development of a strategy - learning from past mistakes in particular.
    3. Combat: the combat is fun and intuitive, but not over complication. Unlocking new weapons also adds to the strategy. The weapons also have meaning to characters you meet, which adds to the narrative.
    4. Setting and art style: the game is gorgeous to look at, and has a really rich visual atmosphere. The variations between regions adds to this.

Easily the best Switch game of the year. I got quite far on a run, and actually found myself slightly worried about actually finishing it....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hades is a perfect showcase of difficultly in video games done well, for all players who play it. I got my first clear 6 hours in, after getting a new weapon and enough darkness to get the three bloodstones. This gentle increase in power as you play the game, alongside knowledge and mechanical skill allows players to break through the end at the point where it feels best. Never dragging it out when it is too easy, and rarely allowing a brick wall when it is too hard. It may take longer to finish for less skilled players, but they are given the opportunity to overcome, to feel balanced challenge, a stark contrast to some other games that follow in the footsteps of Dark Souls. And when you do beat it for the first time, the beautiful scenery and soundtrack that follows makes you feel all the powerful emotions that Zagreus does, making you want to do it again immediately. And of course, cross-saves is something that makes this game even better - being able to switch (pun intended) between platforms with ease. Different difficulty levels available from the start (God mode giving damage resistance which can be switched on and off at any time and Hell Mode making it harder for you from the start which you cannot turn off later) and there're very well-designed and interesting difficulty modifiers designed for the end game which will surely keep you engaged for a (long) while and which you can tailor to your skills/expectations/mood. 6 weapons to choose from, 10 Greek gods to aid you and other characters to help you on your mission. Hades by Supergiant Games is one of the most balanced and polished games I have ever played. It is a roguelike dungeon crawler that always gives a challenge. However, this doesn't mean the game is hard to beat. At first it is near impossible, but if you keep trying the game ends up being quite manageable and even easy. This is also one of the few games where if you do what the character would do in the game it rewards you. Zagreus, the main character, is trying to escape the Underworld and would likely try his best to escape every attempt. The game rewards this playstyle by giving more rewards for bosses which makes the game more fun as you don't have to grind and can instead just play the game.

All of the weapons are fun and unique and there is a ton of content and replayability. The story is quite good as well with some of the best voice acting I have ever seen. The art style is beautiful and detailed and the lore is expansive. The world is highly immersive since there are so many people to talk to that all react to your latest run. The only flaw in the game is the repetitive gameplay, but this is easily overlooked seeing how the gameplay loop is so much fun and very addictive. If you like roguelikes you will love this game and if you don't its still worth a try as it is likely that it is the one that pulls you into the genre.

Hades does an excellent job as a roguelite as well. It is incredibly difficult at first with only 1 life but as you get permanent upgrades you start with more lives and more health. These permanent upgrades help you want to keep playing more when you are stuck on a difficult boss. You unlock new starting weapons as you play, which as stated above can really change gameplay style. I preferred the gun and being further away from enemies and that plays really differently than the sword.
The graphics and music just ooze style. It's kind of a cel shaded/ cartoony look that kind of feels like a graphic novel about the underworld. The voice acting is generally well done too.
Even if you are unusually not a fan of roguelite games, I would highly recommend this game. It might change your mind. If your already a fan, this is the best example in my mind.
Scorewise, it may not be a perfect game but I am still giving it a 10. For the cost of this game and the amount of fun it is and its potential for replayabilty, it truly is excellent and everyone should try it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hades is one of those rare games that pushes the genre forward and sets a new standard of what all other Roguelike games after will try to aim for. With beautiful visuals, fast responsive gameplay, and amazing dialogue and music. Hades is the complete package and a game thats must play for anyone.

Hades main premise is that you play as Zagreus, the son of the greek god Hades. The main objective is to escape the depths of the Underworld completing 4 Levels, Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and The Temple of Styx. Each level is then broken up into rooms which after defeating all the enemies gives you something depending on whats the doors icon. They can range from gaining coins, Keys, Darkness, Gemstones, Hearts, and Nectar that are all items that you use in the game. But you can also you can receive a Boon from another god helping you escape to the surface. You can choose between 3 boons these boons are temporary and enhance Zagreus. Choosing which boon you like is part of the fun blending different styles so each run feels different. Using boons to fit your play style will help you progress farther and faster. Each player will have their own favorites as all of the gods and strong and helpful. You can also visit a Character in each region (outside of Temple of Styx) These characters give you specific boost that's always worth visiting when available. After completing enough rooms you a greeted with a boss all the way up till you vs your father Hades.

Hades features 6 different starting weapons that each have 4 different variants. Swords are the standard fast and dependable. Spears have longer range, Shields which can be used to block attacks and be thrown Captain America-like. Bows which have range and spread damage, Fist which you get up close and punch, and Guns which have ammo and grenades. Each weapon have a main and secondary attack as well as a dash attack. You also have a cast as a range projectile that can be upgraded and changed in various ways.

What separates Hades from others like it in the genre is the way it handles the story and dialogue. After each attempt you will be returned to the House of Hades which is basically you overworld in-between runs. Here you can have access to your room and mirror. Using darkness you collect the mirror has permanent upgrades that you can take with in each run. As you play you unlock more upgrades making you stronger and easier to progress farther. Each upgrade has 2 different options giving you more options for how you want to play. Also you can talk to characters who will talk about your last run or advance the overall story. Here you can gift characters Nectar that you collect on your runs. Nectar increases the relationship with that character and gives you their Keepsake which is one item you bring on your runs and can be upgraded as you use them. After giving enough nectar you can then start gifting ambrosia for even higher rewards. You can even fall in love in this game with 3 possible romantic options. Overall each character has unique and LOTS of dialogue that will not repeat for a very long time. As well with all the lines being terrifically voice acted its one of the best in any video game.

Gameplay: Tight controls Fast action and combat, Addictive hack and slash action game that plays great. Difficulty can be hard for some but its fairly difficult and dying gives you the chance to get stronger and try another run.

Graphics: Looks and runs Amazing at 60fps its very smooth playing both handheld and docked. Beautiful Chracter models and locations make this game very pleasing to look at.

Story: Its one of the better written and voice acted story ive played in any video game. Its simple concept opens up with with great characters and dialogue. Very memorable and perfect for a video game

Music: Fantastic, so many great songs you'll be sure to be humming this music and listening to some songs over and over

Replay/Longevity: Its concept of playing till you die and being able to beat the game in one go has a great loop. You can easily play this game for this game for as many attempts as you want. Beating this game the 1st time is just start and turning up the heat up gives this game a lot of longevity for months and months..

UI/Menus: Everything is well organize and easy to find. Being able to save in between rooms is helpful for picking up and playing in short burst.

Overall: Supergiant has done it again with arguably their best game yet. Its a genre defining game that Switch owners must own. Now that its on all other consoles and Gamepass theres no reason to skip this masterpiece

Add in a healthy variety of weapons (most unlockable) for different kinds of gameplay, good graphics that are bound to stand the test of time, an awesome rocking soundtrack and outstanding (and sexy) voice-acting and you got yourself an excellent videogame that you'll be playing for a long, long time. It flawlessly achieves what it meant to be maximizing what a game can do in the space of the rougelite genre which is a genre that I don't particularly enjoy. The design is top-notch. The addictive gameplay loop intertwines with the thoughtfully written story in a perfect way.

    So why 95/100?

There could have been more variation regarding enemies. After 20-30 runs they tend to become very repetitive buuut you would be over with the game probably after so many runs so just in time to not feel a drag. And of course, the idea that you can pick it 3 months after and still get pieces of the story and still discover some new trinkets and extra goodies that I won't spoil makes up for this lack of variety.

    Congratulations to the entire team!

Unfortunately, Hades has other ideas, and he soon realises he’ll have to fight his way past many angry lost souls along the way.

Hades is another entry into the crowded ‘rougelike’ genre, but it is arguably the best yet. The combat is excellent, with weapons and upgrades offering endless combinations of play styles to be experimented with, and a variety of enemy types each requiring different tactics. Although death will require players to start again, certain items are retained to allow players to upgrade their weapons and abilities to help with the next attempt, and this goes a long way towards reducing the frustration that games in the genre can generate.

Add to this an interesting narrative, told by through a humorous and well voiced script, and you have the best game of 2020.

The reasons to play this game are to experience the great characters / writing, and to experience the dynamic "boon" system where you shape your combat strategy by choosing among three boons after each sub-stage. Boon synergy and the impact of your choices is at the core of this game.

This game's flaw is that it spaces the weapon / character upgrades out too thin. After finally "beating" the game for the first time, I felt like I only uncovered 70% of the content, and acquired only 50% of it all. The game is long enough and doesn't need to withhold upgrades to artificially add "end-game content."

This is easily one of the best games of the year.

Here is a list of things i felt necessary to bring up when it comes to this game:

    - Music is fantastic, I loved whenever I entered a battle especially a boss that the music would pump me up so good I would be so hyped to play.
    - Game-play is fun and enjoyable. Your build up can be experimental but you can also reset it to rebuild your stats to work for you. There's also the Godmode for those of us who would more like to focus on the story.
    - Story, I truly enjoy the story. Zagreus journey is a blast to enjoy and the mystery is intriguing and kept me going back. The characters we meet is both colorful and enjoyable to interact with.

    - You will die - a lot! And you will have to start over from start over and over again. For many this will be a con. The game-play is rougelike, with the premise that you will die many times as you progress further along. But you will get better as you continue playing and updating your stats.

    - Godmode. This helped me alot. I will admit I haven't been a long time gamer, I have played a few games in my childhood but I mainly play to have an enjoyable time. If the game makes me to frustrated I will either try an easier mode but often Easy mode is never fun to me. It makes it to easy and I always try to play a game on Normal. Godmode helped me here because each time I died in the game I would feel a bit frustrated because I didn't feel like I got any further. Godmode gave me a bit of leeway. Each time I died I would gain 2 % resistance. It will continue to give you this bonus until you cap it of at 80% resistanse damage. This honestly helped me alot. It gave me some breathing space as I progressed through the game, but it did NOT make the rest of the playthrough easier. It allowed me to play on my terms and I could at anytime turn of the god mode. This also allowed me to learn the game mechanics in my own time.

Who I would recommend this to?
To you who likes Rougelike games, or would like to try a rougelike game. For us who enjoy a good story to your games and a gameplay which will both frustrate you but also fulfill you.
If you however find the idea of dying over and over again and starting over at square one everytime. Then I would not recommend this game to you.

Hades isn't just a good game: it's an indie game that makes most "triple A" look like shallow, repetitive grindfests.

    PROS:

    - ASTOUNDING AMOUNTS OF CONTENT: Roguelikes are repetitive by nature. Hades spices up that game loop by surprising you at every step with an incredible amount of quality content, that lasts well beyond the final credits.

    - FANTASTIC SCREENPLAY AND ACTING: At their worst, the writing and acting in Hades are Hollywood quality. At their best, they put most movies to shame.

    - SOUND MECHANICS: All the carefully curated content and the top-class dramatic work are nice–but at the bottom of it, Hades is still an action game, and a very good one at that. You'll be suitably amused and frustrated while learning to escape the underworld.

    CONS:

SOME REPETITION: No matter how good, Hades is still a roguelike. You do the same thing over and over. This game does a great job of throwing new unexpected things at you, but a feeling of repetition still sets in after a while.

UNBALANCED WEAPONS AND BOONS: Hades is carefully curated and balanced–but even then, some weapons are so much better than others, that the game has a hard time convincing you to vary your build, no matter how hard it tries. After the first successful run, you'll know exactly what you need to "win" multiple times in a row.

The only thing that keeps the game away from a perfect score is that it needed more variation: while the Pact of Punishment puts a little patch on this issue, it is definitely not enough. Number of power-ups

I didn’t like rouguelike games, until now. Always something new, even though you’re traversing the same area over and over. Go. Get. This. Game. Now.

Over time, I have grown to dislike rougelikes more and more. This didn't stop me from absolutely loving Hades and it's wonderful visual and audio design. It is about as great as everybody claims. If you are on the fence about purchasing it, you will probably like it. The game, although as punishing as all rouguelikes are, is very accessible.

First off, Hades is exceptionally well written for a roguelike game. Generally, they lack in the story department and the gameplay makes up for it, but Hades manages to deliver both a beautiful story and amazing characters as well an almost flawless fast-paced combat. All the characters' dialogues and small interactions are priceless.

This game is not only for those who love addictive and punishing roguelike games but is also a must-play for everyone who loves ancient Greece and its mythology since the story is so well-written and interesting. Also, for those who aren't skilled enough in the roguelike genre, the game includes a less punishing mode for those interested in the narrative. So it's accessible for the majority of gamers.

To conclude. Hades is probably the second-best roguelike game I've ever played since Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. Go play it and replay it, you won't regret it.

    Hadès is a great roguelite.

There are decoration options, relationship options, the variety of builds is enormous and I couldn't find boredom in over 45 hours of game. I am convinced I could sink 45 more and not see the end of what Hades has to give.

Smooth gameplay and great manoeuverability, although - as usual for most Switch games I played - docked and handled mode tend to make a difference in gameplay rythm big enough to make your life more complicated.

If you're into roguelites, definitely go with this one.

Here's a hint. Every time you restart, talk to the NPCs. They all have tips & tricks to share to help guide you. In doing so, you will soon learn that this isn't a pointless game. Each run means you're getting stronger. And as you get stronger, you learn more about this world, reach furher into the world and discover more about the all the wonderful characters and stories. Playing and controls are relatively easy to learn and perfect and the nature of starting an escape attempt and pushing as far as you can until you die, makes it easier to pick up and put down this game. So if you're after bite sized gaming. This game will work for you. In so saying, as you progress it becomes more and more addictive. So don't be surprised if you lose hours in it at a time. Expand

Needs more variations in the enemy designs, gets really repetitive even with the weapon mixups and skills. The story and voice acting is 10/10 and it's a unique game.

I don't usually write game reviews and I don't usually like rogue-lite games. After defeating Hades I've come to the realization that this game is a masterpiece. Super Giant Games know very well how to create a fantastic indie. The action is slick, smooth and satisfying. The dialogue with the gods and various characters spread throughout the world are interesting and well thought out. II don't usually write game reviews and I don't usually like rogue-lite games. Hades is a complete package. The writing will make you laugh, the gameplay will make you smile, the bosses will frustrate you, and the art will make you stare in awe. All of which combined makes Hades a must-play, and once you start, you won’t want to stop.

Despite how long I’ve been ranting here, there’s plenty more I could say about Hades. But honestly, I feel it’s best you discover for yourself why I’m so enamored of Supergiant’s latest adventure. Though the game isn’t quite perfect, it truly earned the accolades it’s been receiving. And honestly, if they decide to implement some additional content later on, most of my complaints would be rendered moot. This is honestly my favorite game yet by Supergiant Games, and easily one of my favorite indies of 2020. If you love rogue and need something new to enjoy, be sure to put this one on your wishlist.
