    From the very start, GrimGrimoire was a strong game, and with GrimGrimoire OnceMore VanillaWare made a once niche title even more appealing to a wider audience. With visual novels more appreciated, I feel the story of Lillet and the loops she jumps through at Tower of Silver Star will be better appreciated. Not to mention the solid strategic elements feel like they flow better with the latest adjustments. Combine that with VanillaWare’s always stunning presentation, and GrimGrimoire OnceMore feels like a mandatory inclusion in the libraries of both strong story lovers and strategy enthusiasts.

    GrimGrimoire OnceMore (with feeling) is a textbook example of how to retain an enjoyable experience and modernize it for a contemporary audience. The whimsical characters and art shine in HD, and the RTS gameplay holds up well on Switch. The stages do get a little repetitive as you make your way through the main story, but there’s more than enough meat on these bones to justify a purchase for fans of Vanillaware’s previous works or anyone looking for a satisfying RTS with a fantasy coat of paint.

    Some RTS fans are going to find GrimGrimoire a little too tedious at times even with the great new features, while those looking to enjoy the excellent visuals and solid time loop yarn will have to come to grips with the strategic elements. Still, I think there’s a lot here worth digging into. I like to think the audience is more receptive to things like this than it was in the late 00s, and that perhaps GrimGrimoire will get its due at long last.

    The original GrimGrimoire was envisioned as the first in a franchise before poor sales put the kibosh on that idea. I don’t know if Vanillaware and NIS America will be more successful this time around with GrimGrimoire OnceMore, but I hope they are because this game is a top to bottom delight and I would love to see what lies beyond the halls of Silver Star Tower.

    Unlike other Vanillaware games, GrimGrimoire Once More is not a game for everyone. If you connect with it and don't get frustrated by the "death, learn and try again" loop, you'll have a great time with a careful mix of role-playing, tactics, real-time strategy and tower defense. All topped with beautiful art and a very interesting plot.

    Trading tanks for talismans and infantry for imps, GrimGrimoire provides a painterly style to the real-time strategy genre. With an intriguing plotline that tweaks expectations and a remaster that fixes some (but not all) of the game’s faults, OnceMore is worth revisiting or tackling for the first time.

    If you have already played the sacred monsters of the genre previously released and you are , like us, great admirers of the splendid artistic direction of Kaminari and company, here you will still find bread for your teeth for at least fifteen hours.

    If you love experimental genres, tower defence games, high-quality Japanese 2D art and are into weird, tangled stories – congratulations! You are one of the selected few to this game can be easily recommended to. For the rest of you, it’s a gamble. Either you will love it or simply detest it.

    GrimGrimoire OnceMore offers tower defense and RTS fans a level of learning and resource management that engages without ever hitting overload. It’s not my favorite tower defense game, but the quality artwork, interesting story, and solid gameplay should have genre fans (and fans of the original version) pleased with its Switch release.

    GrimGrimoire OnceMore is an engaging experience. The battle system is its strongest feature, and is extremely satisfying to play around with. Developing your own personal strategies and comparing them with other players is one of those joyous moments you won’t forget in a hurry. Despite the mediocre storyline and all the repetition you’re forced to endure, the game is well worth checking out if you’re a fan of quirky and unique RTS games.

    GrimGrimoire OnceMore takes one of the most under-appreciated RTS games of its generation and fixes some of its biggest problems, making this a worthwhile game for both new fans and those who have played the original. While the repetitive maps mean that most levels feel too similar to each other, the story is fun and the visuals have had a solid upgrade for the Switch. There is just enough depth to the strategy to keep you guessing without overwhelming new players.

    Wcielamy się tutaj w postać młodej i uroczej adeptki magii Lillet Blan. Bohaterka promienieje ze szczęścia z powodu dostania się do wymarzonej magicznej szkoły. Placówka ta to nie Hogwart, a pełnoprawna wieża magów rodem z klasycznych opowiadań fantasy. Miejsce to przepełnia niezwykła atmosfera, niezwykłe moce, niezwykli bohaterowie (zarówno uczniowie, jak i nauczyciele) oraz masa skrywanych sekretów. Po kilku pierwszych dniach spędzonych na poznawaniu nauczycieli i uczniów oraz przyswojeniu podstaw magii, Lillet wplątuje się jednak w coś niezwykle poważnego. Potężna siła zagraża bowiem temu miejscu oraz jego mieszkańcom. To od młodej czarodziejki (a wsadzie to od nas) zależne będzie czy mroczna tajemnica zostanie odkryta i czy świat nie pogrąży się w katastroficznym chaosie.

    Sam zarys historii pokazuje, że mamy tutaj do czynienia z dosyć prostymi założeniami scenariusza. Opowieść nie jest może jakoś nadmiernie innowacyjna czy rewolucyjna, na pewno jednak posiada ona niezaprzeczalny urok. Pomimo swojej pewnej „fantazyjnej” schematyczności w kilku miejscach potrafi ona również mile zaskoczyć i naprawdę mocno angażuje gracza. Jest to po części zasługa świetnie wykreowanych różnorodnych bohaterów (na czele z Lillet), których obserwujemy na ekranie konsoli i poznajemy pewne ich sekrety.

    GrimGrimoire OnceMore to nie tylko angażująca magiczna historia, ale przede wszystkim spora dawka taktycznych bitew. Mamy tutaj bowiem do czynienia z produkcją z segmentu strategii czasu rzeczywistego.

    Rozgrywka dzieli się na dwa różne etapy. Pierwszy z nich to w pełni udźwiękowione scenki przerywnikowe (przed i po bitwie) posuwające historię do przodu, odkrywające nowe tajemnice wieży magów, pogłębiające lore gry i pozwalające lepiej poznać bohaterów.

    Drugi element to potyczki toczące się na mapie 2D (różne wielkości) będącej niczym innym jak piętrami wieży. Toczone bitwy obserwujemy z boku (przekrój budynku), dzięki czemu mamy dobry wgląd w przebieg walki (kamerę można dodatkowo przybliżać i oddalać). Głównym celem każdej bitwy/misji jest jak łatwo można się domyśleć, pokonanie przeciwnika, przez zniszczenie jego „bazy” i jednostek.

    Skoro mamy tutaj do czynienia z „magiczną” historią to nasze oręże musi być równie „fantazyjne”. Podstawę stanowią tutaj cztery typy szkół magii (urok, nekromancja, czarnoksięstwo, alchemia), które odblokowują się wraz z postępami historii. Każdy z rodzajów magii posiada unikatowe dla siebie jednostki, które można przywołać. Mają one swoje indywidualne zdolności, z których należy korzystać, aby odnieść zwycięstwo (szczególnie ważne jest to na wyższym poziomie trudności). Magia ma również swoje mocne i słabe strony. Całość oparta jest na dosyć standardowych zasadach gry papier-nożyce-kamień. Podczas bitew musimy więc zwracać uwagę, jakiego rodzaju magią dysponuje przeciwnik, aby go odpowiednio skontrować.

    Początek każdej misji to przejęcie kryształów (stanowiących źródło many). Zebranie jej odpowiedniej ilości pozwala nam materializować nowe „zabudowania” (wieżyczki obronne czy miejsca przywołań poszczególnych jednostek). Ilość przywołanych chowańców jest ograniczona (tak samo, jak ilość many w danym krysztale). Każda bitwa wymaga więc od nas taktycznego myślenia i planowania naszych ruchów.

    Obok konieczności wykonania głównego zadania, mamy tu również możliwość realizacji dodatkowych celów misji. Nagrodą są monety, które następnie wykorzystujemy w specjalnym drzewku rozwoju (nowość w stosunku do podstawowej wersji). Każda magia posiada swoją osobną gałąź. Możemy tam między innymi ulepszać np. wieżyczki obronne, siłę poszczególnych jednostek, ilość ich HP czy zmniejszać koszt przywołania. Możliwości jest sporo i są one częściowo zależne od poziomu trudności, na jakim gramy.

    Jeśli chodzi o dalsze ulepszenia gry (w stosunku do oryginału z 2007 roku), które poprawiają rozgrywkę, to mamy tutaj również okazję raz podczas bitwy skorzystać z tak zwanej „wielkiej magii”. Wykorzystanie potężnego zaklęcia może odmienić oblicze potyczki (dodać potrzebnej many, wyleczyć jednostki, zadać obrażenia przeciwnikowi czy zatrzymać na pewien moment płynący czas). Ciekawą i często wykorzystywaną „nowością” jest również system przyspieszania czasu. Sprawdza się to np. w momencie, kiedy czekamy, aby zebrać odpowiednią ilość many lub chcemy przewinąć niektóre rozmowy....

    i shared a playthrough of this game with one of my friends on their switch. i certainly enjoyed my time with it, but i was surprised when theyi shared a playthrough of this game with one of my friends on their switch. i certainly enjoyed my time with it, but i was surprised when they told me it cost them 50 dollars. it is by no means a bad game, but the price is more than a bit steep for what it is.

    i imagine that you’ll like this game if you like games like starcraft, but it might be worth it to wait for a sale or for the price to go down. you could also probably find the PS2 original complete in box for a third of the price of the remaster.    … Full Review »
