Update: after the 1.0.2 patch we can now select card packs in the challenge runs, however, due to the terrible controller support we still can't view what cards are in the card packs. So picking a card pack basically amounts to flipping a coin. Maybe you'll get lucky and the cards you get will work for this run, maybe not. This lack of polish permeates this game and while each update slightly improves the situation I doubt my interest will last that long. Final rating, skip it or pick it up on sale a year from now. Update: after the 1.0.1 patch the game is now only partially broken instead of fully broken. Still can't play the challenges because as soon as you get to the select card packs screen the game doesn't let you press the x button to actually select a card pack. Instead the only available input is to forfeit the pack which makes the challenge virtually impossible. Plenty of other issues like this -- for example you can't deselect cards after selecting them for replacement. Just a total lack of quality all around -- exact opposite experience from the one I had playing another Klei title, Invisible Inc. The issues have made me regret purchasing and I definitely won't be buying the next Klei title without first browsing the bug report forums first.

Original Review: Totally broken on Switch. Can't play with additional characters because progress gets wiped after every restart. Don't buy until patched.

Boring narrative with a less interesting deckbuilding than slay the spire. I regret buying this.

Griftlands’ successful experiments in branching narrative, combined with a deckbuilding system that ranks among the genre’s richest, make it one of my favorite roguelikes to date. Whether I’d recommend it on Switch, however, is another matter. Roguelikes sing on handhelds, but anyone opting to experience Griftlands on Nintendo’s hardware is setting themselves up for a massive learning curve that may turn prospective players off. One way or another, though, Griftlands is a title that deserves every roguelike fan’s attention.

This ingenious blend of RPG mechanics, visual novel-style storytelling, and deck-building roguelike gameplay is a beautiful recipe for a kind of game I never knew I wanted. Even though I’ve already spent the past week getting through each of Griftlands’ campaigns multiple times, I’m still looking forward to my next run – and the run after that. Campaigns are short and challenging, making them highly replayable and memorable adventures that reward your time. It’s kinda absurd that such an eclectic group of mechanics work together in such harmony, but once you’re bitten by their charms it’s quite hard to put Griftlands down.
