Before this release, Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City were approaching unplayable inaccessibility and San Andreas was showing its age. These definitive editions put enough shine on these games to make them worth revisiting. And for the first time, you can now play these genre defining games on a Nintendo handheld console.

True, it's not perfect. True, it's full of bugs. But this is at least the same old GTA as I know and love. It has problems, but I managed to play through Vice City and San Andreas with minimum bugs, none of which were game breaking.

It’s feels as though it is just the PS2 version played on the switch with some minor changes and with some bugs that need to be fixed asap. I agree with reviews that say the audio on San Andreas is bad it really does sound odd and it’s worse then the original. San Andreas in my opinion seems to be the most buggy of the 3. I have spent some time Playing all 3 of the trilogy and I feel that once the bugs are addressed it will be more then fine to play as long as you get your head around that it really hasn’t been remastered at all. All you are getting is the original games which do unfortunately have to many bugs which is annoying and disappointing from Rockstar. I still feel that once this is addressed to have these 3 classic on a handheld console like the switch isn’t something to moan about. In docked mode against the Xbox series X version, you wouldn’t chose the switch version docked at all there is a clear and noticeable difference in the graphics and game play and I wouldn’t play any of the 3 games in docked mode over the versions on the PS5 and Xbox as obvious as that may be. However taking into account the Nintendo switches capabilities against other consoles then it’s not an awful game as long as Rockstar and Grove street address these bugs and issues quickly then it will be playable and enjoyable in handheld mode. But to round off - Rockstar should never have called these games a remastered version they should have just gone with a re-release and been honest rather then promising so much and then not delivering.

the game should have been delayed for the bugs to have been addressed and to have released a polished game and the price tag of £50 on the switch is to much £30-£35 would have been more realistic. So wait to see if the bugs are sorted before you buy and manage your expectations against rockstars claims of a remaster it is not that it is more of a re-release of PS2 versions but it so better with UPDATE v1.14718

And It's nearly bug free. I like the graphics upgrades and the addition of a weapon wheel. Also, the in-game map for GTA 3 is a nice addition. The reason I'm not giving a 10 is due to one game breaking bug in GTA San Andreas. The small town bank job with Catalina can mess your whole game up. At the point where she shoots the door, you should never leave the mission.if you do so, the door will always be gone and you can't progress. More. Other than that, amazing. Expand

I have bought the trilogy for the Switch because I loved to play all 3 games when I was younger and wanted to be able to play this wherever I go. (TL:DR below)

I've seen a lot of negative reviews with various reasons and some are valid. I also notice a lot of people following a hype of critisizing the trilogy just for the sake of criticizing it and stating that if you buy the trilogy Rockstar will keep stalling GTA VI (mostly see this on 9gag). I think this is nonsense and I have bought it anyway.

Being able to play 3 nostalic GTA games on the Switch is great and although you can see that there are some downgrades on the switch compared to other versions it still looks good. So graphicswise I would give it a solid 8/10.

The story is there and you can see they didn't change much from the originals storywise and gameplaywise apart from the controls and auto-saves which I am glad they implemented in the trilogy. Which for me is also a great thing because I didn't want anything different (storywise) compared to these games I played years ago.

There are bugs. So far I have found nothing game breaking. Some bugs are however very annoying like the texture bugs on characters (weird glow through their head or clothes or the roads becoming weirdly dark and some character models including NPC's look a bit odd). Also there are some missing textures here and there like the missing bridge in San Fierro rural area.

The game runs good on switch but could use an update in frame rate. You will notice that when you start driving the game will sometimes drop in framerate to numbers that will make driving more difficult. I think if they would add the original fog the original games had (with a bit more field of view) the games will benefit and there will be an increase of fps. I however am not a developer so I don't know if this would actually work.

If Rockstar (Groove street studios) would work out the bugs, textures and fps I would rate the game 8,5/10 or 9/10. For now I'll leave it an 7/10.

Also I see a lot of people complaining about the price tag. I bought the games for €60,- which of course is quite a lot of money for older games. However if you break it down you only pay €20,- for each game which is not bad for a remaster. I would however like to see the games sold sepperatly for €20,- each for those that are not interested in the complete trilogy.

    TL:DR:
Great to play on the switch but there are some bugs and frame rate issues to solve in order to get an higher rating from me.

The differences between cutscene and in-game models are minimal (like, for example, Emmet's undershirt, Big Smoke's Glendale, Kendl during her only appearance outside cutscenes), unlike the original game, where very notable differences are present, and also there's some official fan-submitted content made for original game canonized. The problem about this game is that some textures can simply glitch out (especially Carl Johnson's clothes), some characters have kinda bad model (think of Cesar's fingers, for example), still no removed radio tracks restored (due to licensing issues as always), GTA San Andreas' Emperor has darkened front doors, and some features from mobile and PS3 versions are present. Also, frustrating loading times (this happens in GTA San Andreas if you enter or exit an interior of some building). If you are Nintendo consoles and Grand Theft Auto fan, you can choose GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, but if you have a still working original GTA CDs or DVDs or digital versions of them for Windows, Xbox, or PlayStation, I'd highly not recommend to get The Definitive Edition unless you're a fan of this "definitive" mess of glitches and issues. Bought the trilogy day one.

    1. Pop-ins are clearly an issue.
    2. Sometimes stationary objects are rendered a bit late.
    3. Speeding is difficult because vehicles in traffic go from 0 opacity to 100 in a second, affecting both gameplay and immersion.
    4. Road textures could be completely bland just giving off a color rather than asphalt look.
    5. Muddy looks on NPCS, trees, some not very far buildings affect the aesthetics.
    6. NPCS and Vehicles' shadows which should form underneath disappear in the evening and stay so until 8:30 in the morning. Yes, you can actually clock it.
    7. Even standing against light source in the night doesn't produce any shadow.
    8. Noted very few bugs owing to the time I could spend. Car doors opening through your character, getting sunk knees down in the sidewalk are frequent ones.
    9. Foliage is clearly updated. But grass blades sticking out in other versions, aesthetically important for me at least, have been completely cropped.
    Most important:
    10. Framerate is very unstable.
    11. Resolution is trashy in docked but bearable in handheld.

The game has been scaled down just to run on the Switch as opposed to being optimized for the best possible experience on Switch.
Compared to other open-world games set in modern era with the freedom to cause mayhem and all, Saints Row 3 looks crispier on the Switch and plays better.

I tend to wait for game reviews prior to perform a purchase, but this time I naively thought "c'mon is rockstar! and is the classic trilogy! what could possibly go wrong to regret this purchase?..." Quite a few things actually. In a word, this port can be qualified in one word: Poor.

There are some good additions on this port.

    - Biggest highlight (bittersweet) - The GTA games are finally on a Nintendo platform, sth which did not happen since Chinatown wars on DS. (There are downsides which will be elaborated later in the review.

    - The lighting additions and refined shadows and textures improve the visuals compared to the original ports.

    - Some of the icons are being reused from the mobile editions, which is quite refreshing. Not a big upgrade, but welcome nonetheless.

    - The weapon wheel, maybe the most welcome addition, together with GPS marked road and the refined controls. It makes a quite decent alignment in game controls with later installments, specially GTA V.

The original experience of GTA is (almost) untouched. Is good to be back. But that's about it regarding bright sides. In fact, all of the above have their negative counterparts, which add more than one pain or unpleasant surprise which blurs the core experience of the game.

    - Coming back to graphic additions, most of these can be found in cars, and some characters having different clothing colours, but dont get too close to the faces - they lack any kind of detail or expression- Many times it feels like a 2012 remaster rather than 2021's... The change on textures also brings new bugs on the scene: Strange violet/golden textures overlapping in our clothing and other textures ( I saw a tree becoming pink in groove street). Some other textures are even creepy (have you seen Cesar Vialpando's hands looking somehow like Edward Scissorhands?? GOD)

    - Second remark on graphics, the resolution is terrible... On handled is already poor, but many games suffer this issue (even Mario Odyssey). I was playing my first days on handled, and I was hoping that things would be much more detailed on docked, but I was VERY wrong... Feels that the resolution stays the same...

    - Some of the icons came from mobile, together with the new controls for the gym weights or lowrider/dancing moves... It went from challenging tasks on the original to far too easy (and even boring) on this version...

    - The weapon wheel does not come complete, meaning we cannot have two weapons of the same type like we can have on GTAV. The GPS tracker works sometimes. The controls feel clunky on many occasions, and is IMPOSSIBLE to do free aim! Super bad adjusted sensitivity. You better enabled classic or assisted aim, and pray to be lucky when on missions which require free aim...

    - The streets are much emptier than usual, and the elements on the screen appear much later. Things change completely if you rotate the view around you, going from a street full of npc's to none or viceversa...

Overall, and as I already pointed out, this port is very poor, and I just hope they may add patches to cover some of the defects which perturb coming back to these three games (now for the first time I hope they wont port GTAV to Switch, cuz given my experience with these games, it could be PAINFUL)

If you expected a half-assed port, then you’re pretty on the mark. There’s a lot of strange issues that crop up across all three games. Texture pop-ins are pretty standard. I honestly wish they’d just ported the gen 5 versions than let another studio “remaster” them.

In drag race missions in SA, the game literally freezes for 1-2 seconds when I hit a checkpoint, making them next to impossible to complete. The game are also butt ugly and in many instances looks objectively worse than the PS2 originals.

I don't know how we're living in a world where the remaster of Saints Row III got more attention than Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar are known for their obsessive attention to detail, to the point of overworking their developers on stupid stuff like horse balls. How the hell can they turn around and give their crown jewels to a company that does mobile ports and nothing else? Avoid this collection at all costs. It honestly would have been better if Rockstar had just thrown up lazy, emulated PS2 versions on Switch and called it a day.

Frame rate drops, low resolution, graphical and lightning bugs here and there. At times awkward controls. The switch can run The Witcher 3 and the Crysis trilogy. There is no excuse the Switch, or any other console cannot run these games perfectly. However, if you use a microscope, there is fun to be found.

It's hard to believe how they turned three absolute classics into a pile of garbage. Rockstar and Take2 don't give a damn about gamers and their expectations as long as the money keeps flowing into their pockets. I have never written a proper review for a game before, but to have me prompted do do such a thing, the game either is good or... well, you probably already know.

This remastering of the three classic games is rather terrible. At first play, they seem perfectly fine, but once you get into game-play is where the flaws start to show. Missing textures, frame-rate issues texture mis-alignments, horrible pop-in, barriers and other objects fail to load in visually, and even the breakable barriers aren't tied to their models, as they break away but visually stay put. When moving Claude around, it's possible to count all of the frames of his animation, since the frame-rate seems to be unlocked from the originals' (you'd think they would put extra time in to add some in-between frames of animation). It seems, based on other people's feedback this is only the tip of the iceberg. I would forgive this if it was limited to the Switch itself, as it's a much different platform than the others; however it seems the issues plague all platforms, regardless of power. The radio stations in the latter games don't even have all the original music, what was in the original releases so long ago. Surely, a company as well known and money-flush as Rockstar could have put a little aside for a new license for those songs?

From what I've heard from others, the game was data-mined and it appears the songs are still present in the game's files, they are just disabled and skipped whenever they are called to play by the game. Any of the fog that was present in the games before is basically gone, leaving one of the more well-known games, San Andreas, to go from a massive-feeling world to looking like Lego Island 2. At least you can see your house (and more) from Mt. Chiliad, with the increased draw distance, for what it's worth (even though it kills the vibe).

Now, I want to be fair, at least somewhat. The games themselves are great, there's a good reason why they are held in such high regard. This pack was to be a massive visual upgrade for these old games, breathing fresh life into them. The explosions look great. The light poles have proper physics when breaking, and cars have reflections in all three games. Trees aren't 2 images stitched together anymore, they all are modeled. Grass textures were also added, to add a bit more detail to the knolls throughout the game. Windows in building textures also have reflections. The dynamic lighting is great, too, providing proper shadows for near everything. Character models also got an upgrade (though in several cases that's debatable). An upgrade to the controls as well was done, to provide an easier was to play the games without the clunkiness. Vehicle and weapon models are also upgraded, and they look really good. The audio was to be swapped with uncompressed versions, too, and in Dolby 5.1 Surround (where reasonable). The frame-rate was also to be better than the originals' were.

Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to everything that was promised. Bordering on false advertising, I feel like I may have been scammed, but surely a high-profile company wouldn't stoop to such a low level, right?

And to top it all off, this package was made by the same studio which made the first remasters of the classic trilogy, they just re-branded themselves. I don't want to believe that these are just the old remasters with a slightly better polishing job, but I can't help the thought get louder the more I play.

Grand Theft Auto? It most certainly is. The Trilogy? Absolutely, it is. The Definitive Edition?

    ...It may never be, sadly...

The good things I can literally count on one hand; the gunplay is now much better on the first 2 titles (GTA III & GTA:VC), the lighting and shades are rather nice if not too much sometimes, the car models look nicer with their wheels looking more like wheels, I personally loved the quality of life additions from GTA:V with the weapon wheel and radio wheel... That's all that is good...

The models are laughably bad, modders made free mods that tool less polygons and looked 30 times better (then Take2 & Rockstar decided to DMCA takedown these mods, because f##k our community, right?), the CHONKY EYEBROWS are just a joke, the glitches are all still there, the bugs were never touched, if anything they introduced EVEN MORE BUGS, the missing fog that gave this game that feeling of extreme size now makes it feel so tiny, the audio issues are insane (character audio balance is broken, audio cutting too early, etc...), milk rain, the A.I upscale textures are practically useless and have made things worse in many situations, models are janky beyond jank; ask Ryder's broken arms bones or any of the Grove gangsters that look like Patrick Star...

GTA the definitive edition is definitive alright; definitively nailed the last nail in Rockstar's coffin for me and many others, and this is the last time I buy anything from their selection, I already filed for a refund and waiting on it because I was promised one thing but was given the bootleg version of it, Avoid it like the plague!

Spitting on our childhood for 60$ ...
Shame on you for this bulls****

I can't believe that this game was even considered for a release on the Switch in this state. The original made so many years ago looks universally better, and this "Definitive" release has NOTHING definitive about it. DO NOT get this.

Do not buy this game in its current state. Bugs (old and new), crashes and overall a poor piece of work from the devs. This is a Christmas cash grab with the old 'we can patch it later' attitude. If the Nintendo eshop had refunds I'd be applying for one. As it is I'll just have to hope that patches and updates are forthcoming to male these games worth my time.

Trash remastered. Surely not a definitive edition. Just play the originals, nothing really changes.

It hurts that Rockstar would do these great games such injustice. Absolutely awful, Rockstar aren’t what they used to be.

This remaster is a joke and just a cash grab. Doing the bare minimum and stíl made a 20 year old game worse on modern consolse. The fact they hid the gameplay before launch and took down the old versions to charge full price was two fingers to consumers

I don't understand how some are saying you can still have fun with these games.

The controls are useless, the framerate makes controlling the game even harder. The gameplay is completely broken with some invisible walls and other walls you can drive straight through. Vehicles pop up out of nowhere making you crash and driving is unresponsive. I don't care so much about the graphics

I don't care so much about the graphics which are a joke by the way but the advertising indicated gta5 level controls. All I can see is slight button remapping. Gameplay and control is way worse than the originals.

Playing this game is so frustrating I nearly threw my brand new Switch Oled against the wall.

I usually wait for reviews before buying games but thought the company behind RDR2 and GTA wouldn't risk their reputation to make some quick money.

Money doesn't come easily to everyone and Rockstar have disappointed many people who spent $60 on this unplayable mess.

GTA The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition is a collection of 3 great titles that left their mark in history. However, the so-called Definitive Edition came out without the deserved treatment.

These are all great games, some of the most influential AAA sandbox games of all time. I cannot in good conscience recommend you play this version, especially if you wanted to check out the Nintendo Switch version. It’s quite ironic that unnecessary and ugly visual overhauls make these ports of PS2 games almost unplayable on this system. I hate to be cynical, but I don’t think you could salvage these things without redesigning everything from the ground up. Grand Theft Auto deserved better, and you deserve better than to waste your money on this.

In its current state, the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is only worth getting if you can get it at a large discount and assuming you’re willing to put up with many technical issues on Switch. While a lot of the major bugs I ran into have been addressed in patches, this is still nowhere near as good as it should be given how important these three games are to gaming in general. It also doesn’t help that the Switch patches are delayed compared to other platforms.
