One of the best switch games so far. Plays far smoother than Hyrule Warriors ever did, and obviously looks better too. A must buy for any fan of the series.

Rather, the light RPG and strategy elements ripped from FE really bolster the core Musou gameplay by fleshing out progression and a higher sense of urgency during battle. The addition of the weapon triangle in particular makes it so that there is a very real reason to switch characters.
    - The best the FE characters have ever looked. Very much looking forward to the main series Fire Emblem installment.
    - Feel just as cathartic as ever to mow down waves and waves of enemies
    - An absolute ton of content - the history mode is very, very meaty
    - Offers a choice between performance and visuals as well as Japanese and English voice acting. These options are great and should always be present.

    Cons:
    - Lazy visuals - many textures are just awful
    - Could be flashier, as most Musou games are. There is so much they could have been done with the expressive Fire Emblem personalities, but it ultimately falls flat.
    - Loot system is uninteresting due to the lack of unique weapons.
    - Awful, predictable story that is an absolute bore.
    - Soundtrack is average at best
    - Objectives never really stray too far from just killing
    - Too many clone movesets. Furthermore, so many movesets that are just not represented. It's ridiculous to me that there is not a single unmounted spear unit in the game.

    Final Word:
Great combination of elements from both the Fire Emblem and Musou series that ultimately falls just a little bit flat due to the auxiliary elements - story, sound, and visuals.

There were clearly poor decisions made in regards to the roster, and it would be preferable to have more playstyles; but man, I just can't resist that ridiculously addictive Warriors gameplay. I would recommend Hyrule Warriors instead, but $60 for a port of a six year old game is absurd, so I recommend this instead.

I can't stress how good Fire Emblem is and I'm getting the DLCs as well. The game's action is frantic, the graphics are good (you can switch between 1080@30 and 720@60fps) and the cut scenes are really well done. You really feel the non-stop action and destroying the hordes of enemies is a great feeling. The strategic and RPG elements are pretty good too.

I haven't written a review for anything in about 2 years, however after playing this game, I had to make a return.

I am a Fire Emblem fan, and I was pretty excited for this game to hit the market. Of course, when I had actually finished the game itself (in about 7 hours or so), I was left disappointed overall, which seems to be a recurring theme with Fire Emblem titles this year.

What cripples this game is it's complete lack of any sort of variety in its roster. This is a game franchise that has spanned over 25 years now, with so many characters to choose from, they manage to pick about 20. All of which are pretty much from the last games they released. Not only a lack of characters from this vast franchise, but they all start to feel similar after you play the game for some time (especially the pegasus knights and mage knights). Wasted potential on what could've been an extremely interesting and fun roster of characters.

The story itself is completely uninspired. Halfway through the game I could honestly predict what was going to happen, and without fail, what I had assumed did actually happen. The game's protagonists are not too amazing (Rowan carries more of the burden here). The antagonist's are also terrible.

Gameplay is initially fun and enjoyable, however with the lack of variety in missions and character movesets, the game then starts to become boring and repetitive. It has some ideas that are pretty nice on paper, but in execution they aren't so fantastic as one might assume.

In my eyes, the game isn't good, nor is it bad. It's just painfully average, and a disappointment to top it all off. I'm not a big musou player, but I do find the games enjoyable from time to time. This game however falls into that void of games that have such great potential but fails to achieve such potential due to the lack of true care and direction for the franchise it is based upon. Buy this game if it's on sale, it's not worth the $60 they ask you for.

Such twists add a level of challenge and keep you on your toes--especially when you have to check what weapon those troops are and you have to send a dominant weapon to defeat them. Great fun, I love it. I character designs are great and I love all the Fire Emblem sound effects. Yes, the characters are from the 3DS games. But, I like those characters and enjoy playing as them. 1. The character roster is abysmal. Hyrule did better in making it a celebration of the series whereas FE left out literally the most popular FE characters like Ike and Roy (according to the most recent heroes popularity poll). They had a lot of excuses for this but none of them actually held water.

    2. The number of unique characters is actually not very high and that's masked by clone characters. After not counting clones we go from 23 to 15.

    3. The story is really bad. There's no sugar coating that. The original characters fall very flat and are very predictable, also the Shadow Dragon characters are a complete afterthought showing up with no introduction or reason for them being there. Lyn and Celica aren't even included in the story.

    4. The map design is really bland. Hyrule looked gorgeous and the maps had character, it made me feel like I was in Hyrule. FE had the potential for being in actual FE maps but instead we got "generic desert map" and "generic castle map" that really could've fit into any generic rpg.

    5. History mode was interesting but Hyrules 8 bit boards were more fleshed out. FE's history mode has really really poor rewards. You have to complete so many battles for what? A skin? That's pretty bad. Hyrule gave us new skins, weapons (that changed movesets), and permanent health upgrades.

    6. The support system is almost non-existent despite being a selling point of the game.

The only thing this game has over other warriors games is the friendly AI because you can command your troops, which isn't small in a game like this. It's really nice to be able to do that and make sure your friendly officers don't die.

I know it seems like I'm a Zelda fanboy but I've only ever played Links Awakening and Fire Emblem is my favorite franchise with Warriors being my second. Honestly I've enjoyed this game because it's a crossover of my two favorite games but realistically it's a 4/10 and I hope they do much better with the sequel.

A Musou game that includes interesting improvements from its predecessor, Hyrule Warriors, but also new flaws.

On the other hand, the storyline is quite disappointing in terms of difficulty, so especially those who played other Warriors games should play on hard mode right from the start and enjoy the extra gold and XP, while feeling some (still quite little) sense of accomplishment. Hopefully the FE-emblematic "lunatic" difficulty unlocks at some point after completion. I also find the absence of larger and trickier bosses to be lacking in this game and makes the whole experience more dull than Hyrule Warriors. The voice acting is fine during the battles and story cut scenes, but becomes quickly quite annoying in the menus, especially while unlocking a bunch of crests. Similarly to Hyrule Warriors, playing in multiplayer mode (2 players on the same Switch) considerably reduces the soldier spawn rate but most annoyingly regularly reduces frame rate.

Overall, the content seems a little thin, especially compared to the last entry in the series, but hopefully the upcoming DLC will fix that by also bringing some more challenge into the game.

The gameplay is that classic dynasty warriors feel of mowing down thousands of troops with the occasional fight against an enemy commander, if it aint broke, don’t fix it.
The game primarily focuses on Fire Emblem Awakening and Fates for its roster of characters. At first I didn’t mind this until I discovered that a majority of the characters are CLONES! So the roster of 26 characters feels more like 13. This is even worse considering there are 9 more scheduled for DLC.
The game’s story mode is generic at best; the writers at Koei Tecmo aren’t winning any awards any time soon, and the voice acting is passable, not good, just passable. The real fun lies in the “history mode” which is just a Fire Emblemized version of adventure mode from Hyrule Warriors.
The game boasts quite a bit of content, despite the character shortcomings, with plenty of unlockables, upgrades for characters, and weapon drops.
There are also several forced mechanics from the Fire Emblem franchise that simply don’t do very much. The only one I found enjoyable is a pair up system during combat.
Overall, I do enjoy the game, and continue to enjoy it. I even hope there are more Nintendo Warriors crossovers in the future, but I hope they’re done a bit better than this.

Besides, it lacks diversity in term of weapons and class. No armored units (Hector?), no lance cav. (Camus?).
Finally, a lot of the chosen characters share the same moveset. They are unnecessary clones.

-Story: It is incredibly bad. Not just meh (as expected in a crossover/ fan service game) but really bad.
The Original Characters are terrible. Especially the guy: Rowan. And they use swords!
The characters from Fates are as dumb (Nohr) or bland (Hoshido) in FEW than in there original games. Those from Awakening and SD are ok but not great.
    The story itself is uninspired.
The cringe is real (power of friendship and all...).

-the gameplay is nice at first but become repetitive very quickly. The lack of diversity and the clone issue are huge here. There is some nice things: you can lead allies controledby the IA and switch between characters during a map. But the maps and objective become repetitivequickly too.

-The voice acting. It is bad for the most part.

-The graphism and 3D models are ok/good but not awesome. The music is nice.

There are probably a lot of things to do to complete the game 100 % but i am already bored. And i checked the announced DLC, there are really bad and will certainly not save this game for me. Some of the DLC characters are in the game already as NPC and they come all from the already represented games! Are you kidding me!? I will resell it soon and I regret my preorder.

Few examples: Anna's high luck helps her triggering skills like Lethality (high dmg) and Luna (lower def and res) while Takumi has much higher skill which makes his Musou stronger.
Minerva and Camilla are both clones but the former is a heavy STR attacker with high defense and HP but low skill and luck, while Camilla is much more balanced in all stats and more versatile.
Ryoma is a heavy hitter with high strength and speed while Owain has more skill and the benefit of a skill that increases his damage based on STR and MAG.

The amount of possibilities with the customization is pretty high and makes the clone characters a bit easier to swallow: I had fun figuring out combinations of skills and weapon traits because I knew I could build a beast like Tiki, a literal monster who can 1 shot anyone in a combo

But despite my praises, I can't tolerate the lazy copies of other characters especially having 9 added characters from launch and this is why I lowered the rate to 8 from 9. A real shame to say the least.

With that said, I want to give a brief review of each pack

    First pack: Fates
Probably one of the weakest packs for a few reasons: yes it introduced S weapons and a few adjustments, but it didn't add much more than that. Armor strike you may say? That's actually a patch (patch 1.20, while the pack was 1.30) which also added a map (hero challenge), more rewards and the ability to sell multiple weapons at once.
It did add a few new missions like gold rush but I hoped for more unique weapons since the main cast still missed most of them, while the 3 new characters (Azura, Niles and Oboro) got theirs instead. They also added the Opus which is an additional boost of the weapon that raises the power from 240 to 720, making them 5 star S weapons.
The 3 characters are good and only one Niles is a clone, but his skill (lethality) is one of the most powerful ones you can have and a must have due to its damaging procs. A good pack, but didn't bring much else to the plate.

    Second Pack: Shadow Dragon.
I particularly liked this pack more: it finally added the ability to buy crests without confirming every single freaking time, more weapons were given to old characters (Anna, Caeda, Tiki) and new stats were given. in particular, Statflip makes you able to use Defense or Resistance as main stats for attacking which is a very good addition.
Of the 3 characters received, 2 of them are clones (Minerva and Navarre) but Minerva alone is a blessing for mounted heroes thanks to her Iote's shield, a skill that negates any weakness and helps pegasi knights and dragon riders to survive those pesky archers. Minerva alone will make the mounting heroes a lot better so it's a good call for me and the fact they added more unique weapons to old characters is a big plus in general.
Nothing original but definitely good improvements!

    Third Pack: Awakening
Let me start saying the good things first: they FINALLY added all weapons to all characters (Lissa, Frederick, Robin etc) and the new stats such Acceleration, Bolster or Amped (a flat 20% stat boost!) makes it really hard to pass over.
Of the 3 new heroes (Tharja, Owain, and Olivia) only Olivia is the original one and has a great skill, Galeforce, while the other two skills are very niche.
Now the bad part: they added two new mission types, Escape and Escort the villagers, which are the worst types so far. They are difficult for all the wrong reasons and it doesn't help that the atrocious AI constantly resets itself whenever you change heroes. They are simply awful and not fun to deal with.
I would praise this pack the most if it wasn't for those awful mission types, but sadly they ruin the overall experience of the game. A lot of stuff at a high price: your patience.

I still recommend the game for good reasons: it's a decent musou game with lots of content, the game is fun and has a nice cast of characters and it's not a port of a century old game with a 60 euro/dollar price tag attached to, unlike 99% of the entire Switch library, and considering this game also gets discounted often enough, I recommend it wholeheartedly!

Meanwhile mario kart and splatoon 2 are still fully priced a year later...

Let's make one thing clear starting out: THE STORY MODE IS NOT THE ONLY MODE Some are under the impression that Story Mode is all there is-- that there is no 'Adventure Mode' like in Hyrule Warriors, this is a fallacy. Fire Emblem Warriors features History Mode.

In History Mode you are presented with a map which recreates the layout of a battle from an original Fire Emblem game. The enemies on this map each signify a stage and as you defeat stages more stages appear in the form of enemy reinforcements. You progress by defeating these stages until you reach the Boss of the map. Beating the Boss of the map unlocks a new reward in the form of a new costume or even a new character. in addition to that new battles appear (Warp Hole Battles) that you become able to challenge depending on your performance on the first stages you were presented. Doing things like completing all the stages, getting S ranks on all stages, and getting an S rank on the Boss stage will allow you to attempt these Warp Hole Battles. There are 5 maps available in total (you unlock new maps by progressing through Story Mode, which the game will alert you when you've unlocked more) these maps ramp up in difficulty and enemy number the further you go and History Mode can easily take as much time as Hyrule Warriors' Adventure Mode did.

Moving on, I want to address the graphics. While they aren't the greatest to look at one will hardly notice a large difference from Hyrule Warriors when playing the game. A few of the errors, like a 2D picture of rocks as the floor texture, have already been addressed by Nintendo and fixed in a day one patch. This was an issue seen in early screenshots and admittedly most who bring it up now are simply jumping aboard the FE:W hate bandwagon. Honestly, unless you really look deep, you're not likely to focus on the environment enough to see these niggles and, being a Dynasty Warriors game at its core, no one really expects groundbreaking graphics going in-- they're not the point, the gameplay is. We place too much stake in graphics nowadays and it really detracts from an otherwise enjoyable experience.

Next, the characters. The roster is small and most of the characters are from Awakening and Fates, so if you aren't big on those games you're not likely to get too into this until the DLC starts rolling out. It's also been brought up that some characters play the same, and this is true. While disappointing it's understandable from a gameplay perspective, since you're able to jump to various units during battle having to adapt to using a new character can be jarring to some. As such, just like the original Fire Emblem games themselves, characters of the same class play the same. Even still there is enough variety to keep most content and you'll be able to commit to perfecting a character instead of suffering from a case of 'too many cooks in the kitchen'.

The problem I'm seeing a lot is people placing too many expectations on FE:W too soon. While Hyrule Warriors has a lot of content now that's only because it's had a lot of DLC. People forget HW had a small roster and only 2 Adventure Mode maps starting out as well. FE:W still has a great deal of content on the way and it's bound to reach HW levels of content by the time it's DLC is created and released.

Try not to let people talk you out of trying this out for yourself. I've been seeing a lot of misinformation and a decent helping of baseless claims on various forums and it's what truly disappoints me when it comes to this game. Leave your judgement at the door until you've had a chance to delve into the game for yourself-- you may be surprised.

A very strong entry into the "Warriors" genre. Great implementation of Fire Emblem elements to expand the depth of the offering.

Story is a little lacking, and the characters made for the game are milquetoast. However, it's otherwise a fantastic use of the Fire Emblem license.

I was about 90 minutes in when I realized just how boring this game was. all the objectives were the exact same and I pressed the exact same buttons over and over again. The game tries to implement fire emblem mechanics but fails utterly. there is no permadeath, your allies still get revived in classic mode, and the weapon triangle has little effect in the game. Sure, they should use other character from other Fire Emblem games, but it really doesn't bother me as much as it does with other elitists out there who try everything within their power to undermine the new Fire Emblem titles. I am sure that Nintendo and Koei are well aware of this and will probably create DLC to add new characters, just like they did with Hyrule Warriors. After all, by the end of Hyrule Warrior's lifespan, we had a portion of representatives from other games. That being said, I don't judge a crossover game solely based on who is. What I look for is visuals, gameplay, and quality, and there is plenty of that in this game. There are a few issues with gameplay as some levels are ridiculous on what you are supposed to do, especially at Chapter 13, but they are small hitches in an otherwise great game. I'm very happy with the Nintendo and 'Warriors' marriage; musou combat and Fire Emblem mechanics makes this my favorite 'Warriors' experience ever. (Used to be Samurai Warriors). The ability to direct your AI controlled allies makes a huge difference. Instead of mindlessly mowing down enemies, you actually have to stop and think about where to send each hero. The other Fire Emblem mechanics like pairing, rock paper scissors combat advantage, and job advancement add to the experience and make the grind more satisfying.

If you like Fire Emblem and have ever enjoyed a Warriors game, you will like this game. You could probably enjoy this without prior knowledge of the FE universe, but having played FE in the past will make the cutscenes and conversations more enjoyable. You don't need to have played a Warriors game to enjoy this one, but if you have you know more or less what the combat will be like.

I'm glad I skipped Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U, because I'm now looking forward getting Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition for my Switch when if launches.

You can kind of guess where a lot of the story will go; when you're tasked with "liberating" a fan favorite character, it's obvious you're just fighting to make them playable. Given the depth associated with crests, weapons, leveling, class upgrades, etc. there's an unexpected level of content, and that's without the season pass.

A recommended title. Especially the special edition.

My two favourite things in video gaming are Fire Emblem and Dynasty Warriors. So as as you can probably imagine the announcement that the two series were gonna have a baby was easily the most exciting thing I've ever experienced with video games. I'm saying this up front because I may have a bias as a result.

My two favourite things in video gaming are Fire Emblem and Dynasty Warriors. So as as you can probably imagine the announcement that the two series were gonna have a baby was easily the most exciting thing I've ever experienced with video games. I'm saying this up front because I may have a bias as a result.

Now to begin, I loved Hyrule Warriors, Nintendo and Koei's last collaboration, but felt it was missing a little bit. Maybe it was the fact that even though I enjoy Zelda I don't have the same connection with it as I do Fire Emblem, it being one of the first games I ever played. Maybe it was just the lack of features within the gameplay, nothing to really spice it up. But Fire Emblem Warriors has none of this. There's countless things going on thanks to the addition of staple Fire Emblem mechanics such as pair-up and the weapon triangle, which I must note is FAR more important in this game then in any of the main series entries. Here it practically forces you to switch between characters and go into battles with a good mixed team, and you'll need to command your other units to really get anywhere or else you'll find yourself overwhelmed fast. If you can't tell, you actually need to use strategy instead of just mindlessly mowing down packs of troops, just like Fire Emblem! It's great, and gives the gameplay that kick in the ass it needs to be truly enjoyable for a lasting period. I've also gotta praise the visuals in this game, Fire Emblem has never looked so good. Colours pop and the characters come to life like they never could before on non-HD graphics. What's more, you're given the choice between 720p ands 60 FPS, or 1080p and 30 FPS. More games need this. Please. I've spent a decent amount of time on both modes and while both are perfectly playable, I prefer 60 FPS and the smooth animations it brings (the attack animations are half the fun after all), even though things are a little fuzzier.

But of course, I have to talk about my complaints. Most importantly is the roster. That damn roster that causes so much controversy. As a lifelong series fan it should come as no surprise that I fall on the side of "this roster is terrible". There are 15 Fire Emblem games, but 17 of the 25 characters available (this review, like all of my reviews, is ignoring the DLC) are from two games (Awakening and Fates). That's absolutely pathetic. Of the remaining 8, 2 are originals made for the game, 3 are from another game (Shadow Dragon) , and the other two feel like they're in the game just to try and not piss us off, having zero story impact at all, not that it's a good story anyway. The bias is almost hilarious to look at, and it's a major letdown for me to see so many games and fan favorite characters left out for no good reason, especially when an uncomfortable amount of the included characters are clones of other characters.

My other complaint of significance is one I couldn't have ever imagined saying a year ago: Everybody talks too damn much! Virtually EVERYTHING has a voice line, and generally it's the same line for that same scenario every time it comes up. I seriously have to mute my TV when buying stuff in the camp en-mass, lest I go insane from hearing "Hey, it actually worked!" or another character's equivalent countless times like there's a stuck CD playing nearby. Please everyone, stop talking outside of in-game dialog, cutscenes, and the title call (although maybe an option to disable this too).

So overall, I enjoyed this game and consider it easily the best Warriors spinoff ever made. but my voice complaint and the roster keep it out of the 10 it would deserve otherwise. If you love Dynasty Warriors like me or are a newer Fire Emblem fan, get it because you're gonna love it. Otherwise though, I advise thinking things through or waiting for the end of DLC support to see how things shape up.

However, it falls back on some of the shortfalls that most warriors games do in that hack and slash and hack and slash is your only way.
    Good:
    Graphics
    Permadeath
Tactical Elements add slightly more depth to game
    Decent character breadth
    Music is fair/ good
    No frame rate problems
History mode is a surprisingly good fit
    Issues:
A lot of the characters are very similar
They could have been more diverse in character selection (older game characters)
The Levelling system in the game is rather slow and can make stages seem extended when they do not really need to be.
Sometimes despite requesting character tactics, they are ignored.
    Can drag on slightly
Despite a few tactical inclusions, lacks any real Fire Emblem feeling bar the characters themselves

In conclusion, as a warriors game, this is good, standard fare for the series but as a Fire Emblem game it falls short. I would still recommend this game to you if you are a fan of hack and slash but if you are only a fan of the Fire Emblem series you may end up disappointed.

They did the franchise justice, and really did incorporate all the Fire Emblem mechanics and look and feel into this style of game. The best compliment I can give is that this feels like a main-line entry to the Fire Emblem franchise.

All the voice actors are the same from the games and Fire Emblem Heroes too. The graphics really do feel like they are in the Fire Emblem 3DS style. The gameplay is really fun, and there are a ton of characters with different play-styles to play as. There is a ton of content in the game too - a full 21 chapter story with hundreds of end-game maps in the History mode.

There's also a Performance mode that runs at mostly 60fps, which I highly encourage people to play. Make sure you set the level-up notifications to OFF, because they become annoying after awhile.

My only real complaint is that the main story is really slow to get going. Like Fates, each chapter starts off meeting new characters and resolving a childish misunderstanding between them that results in a battle before they become friends. The main story doesn't happen until about half-way through the game when you have assembled the entire cast.

Still, the game is really fun and if you love Fire Emblem, you will love this game. If you were like me and were waiting for the next Fire Emblem game after Three Houses, give this a try. You will enjoy it, even if you didn't love some of the characters in the 3DS generation.

This is a really good game if given the chance. Yes there are many missing key characters from the series however, there is plenty of fun still to be had. It looks and runs great with no issues at all. The story mode is a bit weak although the History mode more than makes up for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
    - It's slightly less boring than Hyrule Warriors. I think that the best feature is the positioning of the other characters.
    - The music is amazing
    - There's some replay value with the mementos and the history mode.
    - Good design for the original characters.

    Cons:
    - The main characters of each game (Marth, Robin, Xander, Ryoma) have their own moveset, while the other "non-important" units (Hinoka/Caeda, Takumi/Sakura, Leo/Elisse) are clones. Basically, they have the same moveset.
    - It's a shame that characters from the "pre -Awakening era" like Roy, Hector, Ephraim/Eirika or Ike didn't make it to the game. Congrats Marth and Lyn.
    - The plot is somehow pointless, weak and short. "My deceased mom gave me a shield with some holes while a cave was crumbling, so I'm gonna gather some random people, fill those spaces, and fight a dragon in a tree".
    - The personalities of the original characters are dull, almost clichés.

It is a very competent Musou game, and it incoporates Fire Emblem's various mechanics very well. The weapon triangle really makes you feel the difference when you have the right weapons. And the ability to pair and raise your bond makes it feel like a proper Fire Emblem game.

There are enough upgrade mechanics to keep you replaying and the graphics are alright, considering the Switch is not a powerhouse of computing power.

If you buy a Musou game, you already know what you're in for, tearing through waves and waves of grunts, making you feel like a god. And Fire Emblem Warriors does not disappoint.

Points off for the roster. But the mainstay characters are mostly there.

Even tho, I may say that many of these elements work as a "placebo effect", in the way that you won't really feel that they help you progress that much (you will still feel the gap between a 15lvl character and a 30lvl character tho), as I think they meant with them; enemies always die in 1/2 hits, and bad matchups only get worse through the game unless you're really over-leveled. There are also some conversations that appear when the relationship between characters develop to the max, helping in expanding the experience of the Fire Emblem universe a bit, and so I think they are worth it.
Anyway, the game offers some nice abilities level ups, and if you combine this with that "placebo effect" of the RPG elements, the musou element and the posibility of perfectly distributing the units around the battlefield, you get a super fun 20+ hours game that allows you to enjoy and understand the universe of Fire Emblem even if you've not played any of them before.

Turning Fire Emblem series into a Warriors game should’ve been an ordinary task for Omega Force’s – after all, they’ve done it time and again with other franchises, and more often than not it ended up being a fun fan-servicey game. An attempt to blend Fire Emblem with Dynasty Warriors might seem an odd idea. Where’s the common ground between a tactical RPG and an over-the-top slasher, right? It actually worked out pretty well, as the game managed to retain Fire Emblem’s atmosphere. If you’re a fan of the series and not allergic to Dynasty Warriors’ formula, give it a try. [13/2017, p.36]
