    I can't believe the 'rave reviews' this game is receiving. The game world of Fatum Betula is tiny. There are only a handful of locations, characters and items to interact with. The music is cool and the in-game atmosphere is suitably off-putting, but ultimately there is a limit to the amount of time I am prepared to basically just walk around a static, low-res world doing nothingI can't believe the 'rave reviews' this game is receiving. The game world of Fatum Betula is tiny. There are only a handful of locations, characters and items to interact with. The music is cool and the in-game atmosphere is suitably off-putting, but ultimately there is a limit to the amount of time I am prepared to basically just walk around a static, low-res world doing nothing particularly exciting in the hopes of unlocking strange endings. I like the fact that indie developers are prepared to try new things like this, I just didn't happen to enjoy my experience playing through this one.… Expand

    Fatum Betula finds virtue in the 32-bit generation. It is impossible to return to the ethos that powered games from a quarter century ago, but Fatum Betula captures their spirit and respects their integrity. The wild sense of experimentation, the natural invitation to curiosity, and the harsh beauty imposed by technical limitations shine through every austere texture and restrained polygon.

    It’s an experimental game that uses its PS1 aesthetic to drive home the surreal atmosphere of this world, and it’s easy to get lost in that atmosphere as you explore and experiment in search of different endings. It’s just a shame that the mystery runs out of steam so much sooner than the game itself does, dulling the impact with each new outing and robbing the “true” ending of much of its potential.
