Though it wears its overly obvious influences on its sleeve, Eldest Souls is an incredibly satisfying boss rush that still manages to set itself apart. Its brilliant combat is complimented by a smart skill system and some incredible pixel art. Designed with replayability in mind, it’s a little bit of a bummer that its impressive customization doesn’t really blossom until partway into your first playthrough. But one thing that’s there from the start is that feeling of immense glory after every hard-earned victory: Ceremoniously slumping onto the living room floor, clutching the carpet for dear life with one hand while exhaustedly flipping off the television with the other.

With absolutely sublime pixel art, lively and enjoyable gameplay all of its own as well as a dozen successful bosses and a nice replayability, it's hard to fault Eldest Souls. If you like demanding action games, you are going to be served. Maybe a little too much. To be choosy, we can say that the Fallen Flag studio is sometimes a little too happy on the difficulty.

If you’re looking for a 2D approach to the Souls series, this is a great choice. It is not perfect, by any means, but it is beautiful and challenging.

Eldest Souls straddles the line between frustratingly difficult and overwhelmingly satisfying. I had to stop playing before bed because I’d have trouble sleeping from the nervous tension it caused. Whether that’s appealing or not is up to you, but for me I eventually found my way around to really digging Eldest Souls. I was slow to warm up to it, but now welcome it amongst the others in the genre like Furi or Titan Souls. It builds up gradually but the fun is found in the depth of combat customization, and there’s plenty if you’re up for the challenge.

While the overall world-building and customization options leave a lot to be desired, Eldest Souls is still a worthy game for Souls' fanatics despite its blatant flaws.

As lovers of the narrative aspect of Hidetaka Miyazaki's work rather than the high level of challenge regardless, we struggled to fall in love with Eldest Souls. Because, while trying in some way to mimic the fragmented writing cleared by From Software, this experiment fails to be evocative in the same way.

It brings a new fighting mechanism, a back story similar to souls games, very cute pixel art and dramatic music fit for challenging boss fights. It is short but enjoyable. Yet I have to criticize some of the boss designs. Specifically, Eos and Eksyll. Eos is a hybrid of two balls, fire and ice. Literally you fight againt two balls morphed into one and get separated during the phases of the boss fight. Eksyll is the final boss and during the first phase of the fight a metal and a fire ball protect him. In my opinion these are lazy boss designs. I was so disappointed with the final boss that I didn't want to put a few more hours into the game to beat two balls (again). Full Review »
