This is an interesting souls-like game. It brings a new fighting mechanism, a back story similar to souls games, very cute pixel art and dramatic music fit for challenging boss fights. Literally you fight againt two balls morphed into one and get separated during the phases of the boss fight. Eksyll is the final boss and during the first phase of the fight a metal and a fire ball protect him. In my opinion these are lazy boss designs. I was so disappointed with the final boss that I didn't want to put a few more hours into the game to beat two balls (again). Expand

I don't think the game is bad, but with only 1 option (unless more open up later) to deal with enemy attacks, it just feels cheap, especially seeing you're so limited, fighting a single enemy with no options to go anywhere else or advance your character in any other way just makes the game aggravating rather than fun, and this I'd from a souls fan

This game will beat you into the dirt, in a very satisfying way. I felt initially frustrated I couldn't ace bosses on my first go, but once you figure out how to maximize your DPS it becomes more of a rhythm game in the vein of something like Sekiro.

Also don't feel bad if you struggle, because the game only has about 8 or 9 bosses. I beat the entire game in an evening and frankly,

Also don't feel bad if you struggle, because the game only has about 8 or 9 bosses. I beat the entire game in an evening and frankly, after you get a few boss upgrades the rest of the fights become smooth sailing. I have yet to delve into the "new game+" feature but the game has a ton of potential in that regard. Every boss feels like a challenge, so there aren't any duds or easy ones, you will feel appropriately engaged immediately rolling into a new game+.

Between the skill trees, optional quest tracks, and ramped up new game+ features, there is quite a bit of room to experiment with different playstyles and ability combos. And if you want to just beat the game once, it still is succinct and gratifying.

Eldest Souls is beautifully made, brutally (BRUTALLY!) challenging, and overall a thrill. The art style, soundtrack, and gameplay mechanics are all crafted with care and really sell this game for me. You will fight some bosses dozens of times before finally beating them, but their boss music tracks bump everytime so I wasn't even mad. But this game is HARD (it makes Souls games look like child's play). After the first two bosses, everything escalated quickly and I found myself dying as many times as it took me to beat Orphan of Kos from Bloodborne's DLC.
Be prepared for a tough time from start to finish, but Eldest Souls just manages to keep me coming back for more.

For me, Eldest Souls is a bit of a pleasant surprise. You see, whenever I see any game that’s tough and is in any way implied to be a bit like Dark Souls, my interest level immediately drops. I can respect games that are inherently meant to be hard and, done properly, a solid boss rush title can be exhilarating and maddening all at once. I can respect games that are inherently meant to be hard and, done properly, a solid boss rush title can be exhilarating and maddening all at once. More often than not, though, I’ve found games in this category to be hard for the wrong reasons. Whether it’s over-complicated or shoddy controls, sluggish movement or simply enemies who feel like damage sponges who bring little to no fun to the table, I often find games in the space to be sloppy and tedious. Eldest Souls, however, pretty quickly got its hooks in me and made me pretty happy. The much larger bosses you face are absolutely intimidating, and you won’t likely have a very easy time dispatching them, but the elements are all in place where almost every time you walk away knowing your loss was on you and your lack of execution. Throw in plenty of opportunities to upgrade your hero on different paths to help the play better suit your style and this is a title worth boss rushing to if you like a challenge.

This game is amazing! From an art style that's super detailed & well thought-out, to the originality of the storyline, bosses, & locations; it's truly a blast. I heard this is the first title from developer, Fallen Flag Studio. --Well done!

Though it wears its overly obvious influences on its sleeve, Eldest Souls is an incredibly satisfying boss rush that still manages to set itself apart. Its brilliant combat is complimented by a smart skill system and some incredible pixel art. Designed with replayability in mind, it’s a little bit of a bummer that its impressive customization doesn’t really blossom until partway into your first playthrough. But one thing that’s there from the start is that feeling of immense glory after every hard-earned victory: Ceremoniously slumping onto the living room floor, clutching the carpet for dear life with one hand while exhaustedly flipping off the television with the other.

While the overall world-building and customization options leave a lot to be desired, Eldest Souls is still a worthy game for Souls' fanatics despite its blatant flaws.

With absolutely sublime pixel art, lively and enjoyable gameplay all of its own as well as a dozen successful bosses and a nice replayability, it's hard to fault Eldest Souls. If you like demanding action games, you are going to be served. Maybe a little too much. To be choosy, we can say that the Fallen Flag studio is sometimes a little too happy on the difficulty.
